A global leader in the manuacture o shovels, drills, and draglines or the suracmining industry, Bucyrus International, Inc. grew in 1997 through the acquisition

o the Marion Power Shovel Company. As part o that acquisition, Bucyrus begaan assessment o how the merged companies developed products. The obviousstarting point was the companys design and engineering tools, according to

Designer Frank Szpek. With 2D drating, inal assembly detail drawings or such things as hydraulic

plumbing runs were occasionally completed ater the actual actory it-up wasdone, Szpek explains. We knew 3D solids were the way to go to achieve

improved eiciencies, so we acquired several seats o SolidWorks sotwareand began experimenting, using it in a limited role on small projects.

Bucyruss early experience with SolidWorks sotware led the company to selectthe package as its standard design tool. According to Rick Correll, computer

graphics administrator, Bucyrus chose SolidWorks 3D CAD sotware becauseo its ease o use, large-assembly capabilities, 3D visualization and animation

eatures, and tight integration with product data management (PDM) and analysistools. By using SolidWorks, Bucyrus has shortened its product design cycle

by 25 percent, reduced its analysis time by 20 percent, and raised productconidence by 25 percent.

Because Bucyrus uses SolidWorks sotware to design machines in subassemblor zones such as the operator cab assembly, the utility room assembly, the lubroom assembly, the ballast box assembly, and the electric room assembly, the

company now delivers machines by shipping subassemblies in stages, providingimproved organization and instructions to feld assembly personnel. Under the new

system, Bucyrus has virtually eliminated assembly changes in the feld and reducefeld assembly time on its latest electric shovel product line rom 90 to 60 days,

setting a new standard or product delivery in the surace mining equipment mark

Bucyrus leverages the physical dynamic assembly capabilities in SolidWorks toperorm clearance checks on large assemblies and moving pieces in its machineThe company also uses SolidWorks assembly capabilities to make sure there ar

    no intererence problems.

All o our machines are big and involve thousands o components. SolidWorks he

us to easily resolve problems that in the past were not discovered until we begaassembling the machines, notes Rick Correll, computer graphics administrator.

Bucyrus can also simulate cab visibility in SolidWorks to ensure nothing obstructsthe operators view, according to Designer Derrick Juul. With SolidWorks, we

have a better handle on where everything is located because its all modeled in3D, Juul says.

By using applications integrated with SolidWorks sotware, Bucyrus has takena concurrent approach to engineering and realized additional productivity gains.

Through consulting services provided by IMPACT Engineering Solutions, Inc.,a SolidWorks Certiied Gold Services provider, Bucyrus perormed an audit o its

engineering inormation low and developed and implemented a plan to addressa ull range o integration and process issues, including inrastructure, training,

    and maintenance.

Using the Matrix product data management (PDM) system to manage SolidWork

design data, separate teams work in parallel on dierent subassembly zones durinconceptual design. By bringing inormation out o Matrix into SolidWorks, we kep

current with the other design teams, Szpek says.

Using SolidWorks Simulation sotware, which is ully integrated with SolidWorks

Standard, Bucyrus has cut its analysis time on the project by 20 percent, Correlsaid. The number o Bucyrus engineers who can perorm analysis has doubled aa result. Bucyrus also uses SolidWorks design communication tools to create pho

realistic animations or customer presentations. Instead o doing shadow castsand trying to make 2D drawings come to lie, the graphics we produce now take

the conversation to an entirely new level, says Marketing Manager Kent Hensche
