This edition we speak with Daryn Kitchener and his team at i4 Solutions. What does your company specialise in? We specialise in Desktop, Web and Mobile applications for small-to-medium businesses throughout Australia and overseas. As “Nerds for Hire” we provide businesses with a range of solutions to common problems. Whether you need data capture, reporting or even integration with current systems, we can build it for you! Do you have an existing relationship with a BTP occupant or do you see an opportunity for new relationships in the future? Not at the moment, but we’re always happy to talk to anyone within the BTP community. We can come up with solutions to just about any problem they’ve got. In what ways do you think being a part of the BTP community will help your company grow? I think the big thing for us is how central it is to everything. It’s close to the airport, city and most major facilities we need. The general setup of the BTP Hub is spot on. It’s not overkilled with services we don’t need, the space is good, the quality is excellent, it’s presentable at all times and meets the need of our team and clients. There’s nothing better than our clients coming in and saying, “WOW! This is sensational!” What influenced your decision to make the move to BTP Northshore Hamilton? Since then, coworking spaces, such as Sydney’s Tank Steam Labs, Hub Sydney and Your Desk., have sprung up across the country. In Australia, with business centres so widely distributed, coworking makes a lot of sense. But with any sort of venture, the key is to do it right. GCUC Executive Producer, Liz Elam listed some of the features essential to a successful coworking space, including regular community events, news feeds and directories that encourage members to interact and collaborate, and a range of meeting facilities and quiet spaces. Bronwyn Buksh, speaker at the GCUC event and Executive Manager of Public Green, elaborated on this, saying, “for hubs to succeed outside the CBD, they need to encourage the co-location of similar organisations, and should be defined by the community they are trying to attract.” This ensures events are focused on topics of interest to members and members have a strong sense of belonging and loyalty to the space. Coworking spaces are designed to encourage interaction between occupants and generally comprise an open plan layout with meeting and kitchen facilities, and a membership scheme that runs more like a gym than a traditional serviced office model. Simon Pole, Design Director at Unispace Global, acknowledged the challenge of converting traditionalists to the value of an open plan environment, but said, “If you can work from an airline member lounge, then you can make the move to coworking.” The new generation of tech savvy professionals entering the workforce are increasingly expecting flexibility in their work arrangements. however the statistics show this model also appears to be popular with older constituents. “Three quarters of NSW coworkers are between 35 - 45 years old, earning between $74 000 and $108 000 annually, and are evenly split between the public and private sector,” Keirra Smith of NSW Department of Trade and Investment said. Brisbane Technology Park occupant Retail Marketing recently won an account which will see them managing multinational technology company Intel Corporation’s retail marketing program over the next two years.

“We’re very excited to have won Intel’s retail marketing programs in Australia, our first local client of scale, and can’t wait to bring them into the Retail Marketing Group (RMG) family. At its core, we’ll be providing a national team of Intel representatives product and sales training, and BTL marketing initiatives to the likes of Harvey Norman, JB Hifi, Dick Smith and The Good Guys stores nationally,” Director at Retail Marketing, Chris Holst said.

Mr. Holst explained that this retail marketing program would not only involve the company supporting retailers, but would also mean Retail Marketing would become responsible for taking Intel’s global and regional creative assets and localising them for the Australian market.

The company will be joining forces with fellow Brisbane Technology Park occupant, Mail Boxes Etc (MBE) in managing the new account’s creative and print needs. “The connection with MBE has been quite fortuitous: one morning, on the scheduled Coffee Club run, it occurred to me to speak to Neil and the team about their capabilities to partner with us in meeting Intel’s needs. We had already done some print work for Jawbone through MBE and there seemed to be a nice fit with their capabilities. That’s what’s so great about being a BTP tenant: great synergies can result between neighbours and that’s just on your morning coffee run,” Mr. Holst said.

Mr. Holst said that Brisbane Technology Park is a perfect match for their business. “Being located at BTP just makes sense for us. We were looking for a flexible space where we could grow and being around others with a passion for technology and developing businesses is a great fit. I expect there will be further synergies and opportunities to explore with other tenants in future.”

RMG has a promising future, with their client pipeline looking strong in Australia. “There are lots of discussions currently suggesting appetite for our services are healthy. Our research suggests there is no other company globally specialising in consumer electronics retail marketing and no other company offering the same level of insights and data management combined with first class field marketing, so we’re extremely confident of big success in the Australian market,” Mr. Holst said.

RMG started in UK over ten years ago. Focusing on the consumer electronics industry, They provide below the line marketing activities and programs for blue chip clients. After just 4 months of operating locally their Australian portfolio already includes Intel, Jawbone and The Ideas Company. In the UK they represent the likes of LG, Microsoft Devices, GoPro, and Intel. For more information visit: retailmarketing.com

WIN FOR RETAIL MARKETING

Retail Marketing Group’s Director, Chris Holst and

Business structuring and investment decisions are challenging at the best of times, but focusing on diversification can assist in mitigating long-term risk.

Principal at Hillross Financial Services, Ryan Morse says that starting with the end in sight is the key to success. “Successful owners have a clear direction for their business and are able to scale it appropriately. They know their customer and can confidently provide a service or product to match.”

It is important for owners to have their wealth spread across multiple investments. In the early stages, your business will be your primary asset. Over time it is important to ensure you are building other passive investments. This may include property, an investment portfolio, superannuation, artworks, or investment in other businesses or companies not owned/directed by you. A good financial adviser should work with you not only on your business goals, cash flow and planning, but they should seek to mitigate risk ensuring you are accumulating wealth across multiple assets.”

Mr. Morse emphasized that businesses should consider speaking to a financial advisor for guidance. “Focus on understanding your customer; leave the specialty financial tasks to the professionals with your business’s best interests at heart.”

When selecting a good financial advisor, Mr. Morse says that businesses should focus on relationships. “It is extremely important to select not only a competent, qualified professional, but one you can speak freely with. This is vital so that your advisor can really understand you, your business and where you want to take it.”

A good financial advisor can also provide guidance around other business necessities, such as superannuation payments, an area that businesses commonly make mistakes with.

“Superannuation payments can often be a hassle for employers from both an administration and cash flow perspective. Making sure payments are made in a timely fashion (at maximum, quarterly), and are correctly allocated with the employee’s super fund details, is crucial to remain within legal parameters.”

Recent changes to legislation make this even more imperative with superannuation payments now needing to comply with SuperStream laws which state that superannuation payments must be made electronically and that payment transaction details are also sent to the superfund, including employee name, TFN and superfund member number. “You can no longer just BPay an employee’s super contributions. Employers with over 20 employees should have made this transition by October 31st, 2015, whereas smaller businesses with less than 12 employees, have until July 1st, 2016.”

NAVIGATING THE FINANCIAL LANDSCAPE

BTP Services released its BTP Networks membership scheme in July, and is now delivering a new level of service to businesses within and beyond the Business & Technology Precincts (BTP).

The membership scheme comprises three packages that respond to the needs of companies seeking a business address, receptionist services and/or access to meeting facilities and hot desks.

It is a key element in the strategy to better connect the three Business & Technology Precincts: BTP Westlink Green (Darra), Brisbane Technology Park (Eight Mile Plains) and BTP Northshore (Hamilton). The scheme will give members

access to facilities at all three precincts enabling them to host meetings at locations that suit their clients best.

The membership offerings have been designed to appeal to start-up and established businesses. It also allows businesses with an international or interstate head office, to have a presence in a Brisbane office precinct without the overheads associated with a commercial office tenancy.

Technology can be a mine-field for small businesses lacking ICT expertise. Allen Johnstone, Brand and Culture Manager at Tech Project, highlights some of the key considerations when looking for a new ICT provider or in assessing the performance of your current provider.

Mr Johnstone says that ICT providers shouldn’t just be good, they should be indispensable to the way businesses operate. “Take the time to see what technology leadership your provider offers. You should consider the interest they take in understanding and monitoring the status of your current ICT program. What recommendation and advice is offered and what wellness check plans are in place. This can really help small business owners plan for the future and understand any hidden costs that could arise due to short term planning.

“Businesses also need to make sure that their ICT provider has a strong team of technicians to support their business by offering unlimited helpdesk support and onsite support. There is nothing worse than being promised a high level of service which is then not delivered.”

Two of the main things small businesses should be looking for according to Mr. Johnstone is freedom and security. “We often suggest to businesses that they do their due diligence when it comes to finding their ICT provider. They need to ensure they’re not locked into a long term contract, which will hinder their freedom and flexibility and could end up being an expensive experience.

“Security also has to be at the forefront. With the increase in virus attacks on computers, a provider should have business data security as a top priority. An extensive, managed backup service, which includes daily backup monitoring and onsite

and offsite backup solutions that provide security and disaster ready points for restoring data, should be non-negotiable.”

Businesses also need to be equipped for the future. Mr. Johnstone emphasised the need to take advantage of technological advances that proved to be more productive and cost effective. “Cloud computing means no longer having to pay upfront for any server storage or network infrastructure. Instead, all the computing power you need is provided for a monthly fee, allowing you to scale your service requirements up or down when required.”

THE INDISPENSABLE ROLE OF THE ICT PROVIDER IN THE DIGITAL AGE

In an increasingly fast and interconnected world, where people spend much of their working life on tablets, mobile phones and laptops, digital marketing is becoming crucial to the survival of the small business.

“Since Google’s recent algorithm changes on April 21st, which rewards websites that are optimised for mobile device viewing and demotes those that aren’t, this has never been more true,” says Marina Sipka, DEJAN’s Marketing, PR and Business Development Coordinator.

“Our phones and tablets are no longer content consumption, social media and entertainment devices. There is a growing number of people who perform serious tasks on mobile devices, including transactional activities such as bookings, enquiries and purchases.”

However, Ms. Sipka warns that the marketing industry is unregulated and small businesses need to be careful who they trust. “Web marketing firms now offer guarantees they will set their clients on the first page of Google. This has been debunked by Google, but businesses still fall for the tricks. Instead, a good provider will take time to understand a business and help them earn their position.”

When looking for a reliable digital marketing company, Ms. Sipka suggests taking a look on their blog: if there are very few or no shares on their articles, then it’s likely the company doesn’t provide the quality of service they purport to offer.

But there are other traps small businesses need to take care to avoid, like chasing more traffic rather than focusing on visitor conversion rates. “We help our clients convert visitors into customers through conversion optimisation, which tests different types of pages, content and design elements to see which one will convert better. This has a huge impact on a website’s role in lead generation.”

Ms. Sipka also explained that businesses often attempt to do too many things at the same time. “We tend to prioritise activities starting with those that we know will bring the quickest return on investment. The best way to do this is by looking at your data. That’s the beauty of digital marketing: the data is proof of what works and what doesn’t.”

DIGITAL MARKETING: AVOIDING THE TRAPS

The DEJAN team outside their Brisbane Technology Park office

Construction has commenced at Brisbane Technology Park’s new Innovation Precinct, which was officially marked by a turning of the soil event on Monday 3rd August.

The event was attended by local Member for Stretton, Duncan Pegg, and QLD Treasurer and Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Curtis Pitt. The event coincided with a community cabinet meeting which was being held at the BTP Conference Centre adjacent to the construction site.

The Innovation Precinct, which fronts both Miles Platting Road and Logan Road, signals the start of a new era for Brisbane Technology Park. Works are currently taking place on the site once occupied by Queensland’s first super computer. Now, almost thirty years on, it is expected that the Innovation Precinct will continue attracting technology businesses to Queensland’s premier business park.

The first building, a prominent office and technical facility located at 2/4 Clunies Ross Court, will comprise 4,425m2 of premium commercial office space over three levels and is scheduled for completion in July 2016. The Innovation Precinct will encompass a hotel, a four level

parking station and five new office buildings with commercial office, technical, laboratory and retail space.

The Innovation Precinct is a joint venture of commercial property developers Alceon Group and Graystone.
