1 mark questions• These tend to be the multiple choice questions or missing word questions.

• However you could also be asked to write a simple definition or require a short answer

E.g. Define Speed

Speed can be defined as the distance travelled divided by the time taken

E.g. Name one training aid that could be used in swimming to increase intensity.

Suitable answers: Fins, hand paddles, floats, pullbuoy, weight belt.

ONLY GIVE ONE, if you give 2 and 1 is wrong, you wont get the mark

Challenging Outcome - to be able to: understand how to interpret an exam question to ensure you

answer it correctly

1 mark questions – Mentor and swap

1. What does the vertical jump test measure?

2. What does BMI stand for?

3. Which test shows the Bioelectric impedance test? A or B

A: B:

4. What does the ‘P’ stand for in RPE?

5. Flexibility is the range of motion

possible at a _____________.

6. Muscular strength is an example

of ______________ fitness.

1 mark question - Answers

1. Power in the legs

2. Body Mass Index

3. A (B relates to the skin fold test)

4. Rating of Perceived Exertion

5. Joint

6. Physical fitness

Challenging Outcome - to be able to: understand how to interpret an exam question to ensure you

answer it correctly

2 mark questions: Tips• When answering 2 mark questions you MUST make sure you are giving 2

points and/or explaining your answer. • E.g. Give 2 examples of when balance is needed in sporting activity? There are 2 different types of balance, static and dynamic. A gymnastic requires both of these types of balance for when they are doing hand-stands, cartwheels, tumbles etc. to make sure they do not fall over. Balance is also needed in high jump to make sure athletes have a stable take off from one foot allowing them not to wobble and clear the bar.• E.g. Name 2 examples of sporting activities in which participants would be

expected to score highly in a sit up testSuitable answers: Gymnastics, boxing, martial arts, diving, dance-Make sure you turn the answers into a sentence.

Also be aware that if a question specifically asks you for one example, you can not give 2. Your second mark will come from explaining your first point.

2 mark questions – Mentor and swap1. Explain one reason why fartlek training would be an appropriate training

method for a Netball player.

2. Rachel is a high jumper. Explain 1 reason why plyometric training would be beneficial to her performance.

3. Noah is a weightlifter and wants to measure his leg strength in order to plan for a training programme. He plans to use the grip dynamometer test.

Explain why this test would not be valid

4. James is 18. What would be his

aerobic training zone? (show working out)

5. Define VO2 max and give its measurements

6. Compare the Illinois and 35m sprint test

to state which would be better to measure a

Rugby players speed

2 mark question - Answers1. Fartlek training would be appropriate for a Netball player because a game is varied in

pace. The change in pace from walking to jogging to sprinting mimics the conditions of the game. No Netballer would continuously run for the whole game, so periods of rest followed by intense exercise would be a good training method.

2. Plyometric training would be used to increase the power of Rachel’s take off so she could jump higher. Plyometric training shows the muscles lengthen before quickly shortening, increasing power.

3. Although the grip dynamometer test is specific to strength, it is also specific to arms and hands so would give no indication of leg strength to help plan an effective training programme.

4. 220-18 =202 202/100x85=171.7 202/100x60=121.2

=Aerobic training zone of 172 to 121

5. Maximum amount of oxygen a persons body is able to use. It is measure in ml/kg/min

6. Illinois would be more beneficial as a Rugby player will usually have lots of obstacles to dodge before they can score a try. It is unlikely they will be free to run a straight 35m un-obstructed

• Next week we will mainly look at 3 and 4 mark questions!!!

• Between now and then, start looking through your revision guide and workbook. Familiarise yourself with the unit content again.

• Practice answering the shorter mark questions, checking your answers in the back of your book. Be sure to correct them if your not quite right as you don’t want to be reading incorrect notes when revising for your exam!

Starter – 2 marks questions

• Imagine you were given this question in the exam….

Compare the protocol for the Illinois agility run and the 35m sprint test, considering which test may be a more valid measure of sprint speed in rugby. (2 marks)

• Where are you going to get the 2 marks from?

• How about this one?

• Explain why it might not be appropriate for a 100m runner to train within their aerobic training zone?

3 and 4 mark questions

• These tend to be questions which require:

• Detailed explanation

• Description of an activity/method

• A comparison

• Maths questions

• Mix and match

3 and 4 mark questions – Mentor and swap1. Give 3 examples of factors that can affect the reliability of a fitness

test? (3 mark)

2. Look at the following chart. State which rating Josh would be given if he managed to jump 54cm, 57cm and 55cm.

Explain what he could do to improve

his jumping ability and how this could

help him in Basketball (4 marks)

3. Work out the BMI of this lady and

explain why this result may not be 100%

valid 152cm tall, 85kg. Showing working

out (3 marks)

Gender Excellent Above average Average Below average Poor

Male >65cm 56 - 65cm 50 - 55cm 49 - 40cm <40cm

Female >60cm 51 - 60cm 41 - 50cm 35 - 40cm <35cm

3 mark question - Answers

1. Warm up, time of the day, sleep, food intake

2. Above average. Plyometric training – increasing the strength of his leg muscles allowing him to jump higher when blocking the ball and gain more height when shooting e.g. A slam dunk

3. Weight/ height x height = kg/m2

1.52 x 1.52 = 2.3104 85/2.3104 = 36.790 = 36.8kg/m2

Muscle weighs more than fat.

3 and 4 mark questions – Mentor and swap1. Explain 2 reasons why interval training would be an appropriate training

method for a Rounders player. (4 marks)

2. Amy wants to improve her upper body strength but has injured her ankle. Name and describe a test which Amy could complete before starting a training programme to measure her fitness and again once the training programme is complete (3 marks)

3. What is the Borg scale?

Using the Borg scale, what rating would

141bpm – 180bpm equate to? Show your

working out. (3 marks)

4. Give a definition for co-ordination and

explain why a Tennis player needs it.(4marks)

Answers1. Interval training would be appropriate for a Rounders player because in a game of

Rounders, players only need sudden bursts of energy for a short amount of time. Interval training is high intensity exercise for 30seconds to 5minutes followed by periods of rest or low intensity work. In a game of Rounders, if batting you may need to sprint all the way around the 4 bases to score a rounder or if fielding you may need to sprint to get the ball which has been hit far, before resting until the next go. This method of stop start links in well to interval training.

2. Modified press ups - Taking the pressure off Amy’s ankle. This needs to be done in the same way and under the same conditions before and after the training programme.

3. The Borg scale is the rating of perceived exertion, so how hard someone thinks they are working at.

141/10 = 14.1 180/10 = 18 Borg rating of 14-18

4. Co-ordination is the ability to use two or more body parts at the same time to produce a smooth and accurate movement. It is important for a Tennis player to have hand eye co-ordination to hit the ball accurately to where they want it to go. They also need hand eye co-ordination on a serve to make sure they hit the ball at the correct point to make the serve land in its optimal position.

BTEC RevisionUnit 1: Fitness for sport and exercise

Starter – 4 marks question

• Imagine you were given this question in the exam….

Describe the method for the Illinois agility (4 marks)

• Where are you going to get the 4 marks from?

• Have a go at answering the above question.

1. Make sure the cones are set out at the correct distances

2. Lie face down by the start cones

3. On ‘go’ get up and run around the course as quickly as possible

4. Stop the clock when you pass the finish line

6 and 8 marks questions

Key terms

• Evaluate: Look at both sides of the story and sum up the pro’s and con’s of each side. You may have to give a final decision

• Compare: Identify and explain

• Discuss: Give reasons or present facts and explain the impact on the topic

8 mark questions – Mentor and swap1. Using you knowledge of training, interpret and evaluate the data in

the table below, commenting on each athletes effectiveness.

2. The Bioelectrical impedance analysis

and the skinfold test are used to predict

the percentage of body fat.

Discuss the use of BIA and skinfold to

predict percent body fat.

Name MSFT 1 MSFT 2 MSFT 3

Lin 4.4 5.3 7.1

Richard 5.5 5.6 5.5

Pedro 6.1 6.8 4.5

8 mark question - Answers

1. The fitness test all of the athletes have participated in is the multi stage fitness test.

Lin has shown an improvement from week 1 through to week 3 suggesting the type of training she has been using has been successful and she has been progressively overloading her body. She may have been using continuous training which is suited to showing an improvement in the multi stage fitness test.

Richard showed a slight improvement from test 1 to test 2 but then reverted back to his original score in test 3. This indicates that his training has not been effective, either he was using the wrong training method which was not specific to running or he was not overloading or increasing the intensity.

Pedro had a positive start improving test 1 to test 2 however reversibility seems to kick in, perhaps he picked up an injury after test 2 and could not train as his results got worse

8 mark question - Answers1. Advantages of BIA

-Quick, easy, non invasive (unlike skinfold), related to age and gender (unlike BMI)

2. Disadvantages of BIA

-expensive equipment, client inputs own data, client doesn’t follow pre test procedures, calibration of equipment, no alcohol 48hour prior, must be hydrated

3. Advantages of Skinfold

-good estimations, not expensive, no pre test procedures

4. Disadvantages of skinfold

-embarrassing, reliability issues linked to area of skin used, can not be used on very obese people

Now write a continuous prose answer… and swap with your partner to mark
