A 75 year old Georgian woman cut off internet services to all of neighbouring Armenia whilst scavenging for copper to sell as scrap when she accidentally sliced through an underground fibre cable.

Jamaica placed a ban on almost all scrap metal exports in April 2010 as the Government moved to put a stop to metal theft and its negative impact on industry.

Metal Theft - Statistics £770m – annual cost to UK economy as a result of metal theft –

impacts various industry sectors - Transportation, Power, Communications, Water etc.

30% - increase in price of copper over last 12 months 62% – forecast rise in copper price 2009 to 2014
