Course in Depth

What will I study?

This three-year degree, which offers an equal balance oftheoretical and practice learning, is delivered within asupportive learning environment. You will have theopportunity to achieve nursing proficiencies, aligned tothe Nursing and Midwifery Council's standards ofproficiency, which represent the skills, knowledge andattributes that mental health nurses must demonstrate.

In Year 1 you will focus on professionalism,communication, personal resilience and emotionalintelligence. Registered nurses must act professionallyand use their knowledge and experience to makeevidence-based decisions about care. They must alsocontinually reflect on their practice and keep abreast ofnew and emerging developments. These factors haveinfluenced the theoretical content of the programme. Youwill engage in simulated education that will prepare youfor practice placements where you will be supported bypractice supervisors and assessors.

In Year 2 you will examine research methodologies andenhance your skills and understanding in evidence-basedcare. There will be a focus on core anatomy andphysiology to enable you to undertake assessment of thephysical and mental health of patients. As registerednurses play a key role in improving and maintaining themental, physical and behavioural health and wellbeing ofpeople, you will also study the principles of healthpromotion and protection. You will engage in furthersimulated education to prepare for practice placements.

Year 3 consolidates learning that has taken place inprevious years. There will be a focus on leadership andmanagement, evaluating care and working in teams. Youwill also be introduced to the principles of organisationalchange and public policy and the development of politicalawareness. You will undertake practice placementswhere you will confirm your achievement of nursingproficiencies in preparation for professional registration.

This programme adheres closely to the six core values ofthe NHS. These values, enshrined within the NHSConstitution, have been developed by patients, the publicand staff to inspire passion in the NHS, guide it in the 21st

How will I study?

Seminars, lectures, work-based learning and tutorials willbe used to deliver this programme. Some modules alsoinclude enquiry-based and technology enhanced learning.While the majority of classes will take place at Edge HillUniversity, some modules may involve studying at sitesother than Ormskirk in which case you will be responsiblefor travel and parking costs.

You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will beundertaken predominantly in community settings withinNHS, local authority, independent and voluntary sectororganisations. You will be supported by a practiceplacement assessor and supervisor.

Placements will include weekend, early morning, eveningand night work to ensure access to a full range of practiceexperiences across 24-hour care. You will be responsiblefor travel and parking costs while on placement. There isalso an opportunity to undertake a practice learningexperience outside the region, within the UnitedKingdom or internationally.

How will I be assessed?

In each year, you will be assessed by a writtenassessment, oral assessment, a simulated practicalassessment and an examination.

While on practice placement, you will be supported in thedevelopment of the application of knowledge and skills,leading to the assessment of related proficiencies.

Who will be teaching me?

All lectures are delivered by professionals within the fieldof nursing as well as specialists in other areas.

Most importantly, service users, carers and their familieswill be involved in facilitating your learning so that yougain an understanding about the impact care has onindividual groups.

Themes

Adopting a non-modular approach, the curriculum is aligned around three core progressive strands, each of whichcovers a distinctive year of study.

Year 1: The Foundations of Nursing Practice (120 credits)

The Foundations of Nursing Practice introduces a variety of concepts to empower you to develop the knowledge,skills and competencies required to deliver safe and effective care. You will study professional and personal conceptsas you gain the foundations for the delivery of contemporary nursing practice across the lifespan and a variety ofhealthcare settings. You will benefit from a wide range of practice experiences as you discover the theory andapplication of biological, psychosocial and pharmacological factors, as well as integrated care delivery.

Assessment: Coursework: 50%, Written Exam(s): 25%, Practical(s): 25%.

Year 2: Developing Proficiencies for Nursing (120 credits)

Developing Proficiencies for Nursing equips you with the knowledge and skills to safely assess, plan, lead and evaluatepatient care, including safe discharge, transition and end of life care. The aim is to promote working in partnership,with an emphasis on collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches, in an ever-changing health and social careenvironment. This year of study prepares you to undertake comprehensive assessments of physical, psychological,mental, social and emotional needs for people of all ages, across all care settings. You will also gain the skills andexperience required to plan and deliver interventions that promote health and wellbeing, exploring the proactive roleof the professional nurse in the provision of health promotion and prevention strategies.

Year 3: Preparing for the Role of the Registered Nurse (120 credits)

Preparing for the Role of the Registered Nurse provides you with the opportunities to develop a critical appreciationof the role of the registered nurse. This will be achieved through a combination of independent and guided learning inwhich you will develop confidence in assessment, clinical decision making, and the application of a range of relatedtheories to support care delivery. Successful completion of this year of study will enable you to have the confidenceand ability to think critically and apply knowledge and skills in the provision of expert evidence-based direct nursingcare.

Assessment: Coursework: 50%, Written Exam(s): 25%, Practical(s): 25%.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Entry Criteria

Entry Requirements

Typical offer 104-112 UCAS Tariff points, for which nospecific subjects are required, plus GCSE EnglishLanguage and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or Grade 4or above (or equivalent).

An interview forms part of the selection process.

If you accept an offer from Edge Hill you will need tosatisfy the requirements of the Nursing & MidwiferyCouncil in respect of physical and mental fitness and willbe required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service(DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet themandatory criteria of 'Clearance to Work with Childrenand/or Vulnerable Adults'. Further information will besent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

Example Offers

Some examples of how you can achieve 104-112 UCASTariff points are detailed below.

• A Level: BCC-BBC;

• BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTECQCF qualifications): Distinction, Merit, Merit(DMM);

• International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy toaccept IB qualifications which achieve the requirednumber of UCAS Tariff points;

• Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits atLevel 3, for example 9 credits at Distinction and 36credits at Merit or 15 credits at Distinction and 30credits at Merit. The required total can be attainedfrom various credit combinations.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actualoffers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awardsmay also be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (orequivalent), there is no maximum number ofqualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. Thisincludes additional qualifications such as the Welsh

Baccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ),AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, andGeneral Studies AS or A Level awards.

Career Prospects

What are my career prospects?

Mental health nurses work in hospitals, clinics and thecommunity, supporting and treating people who are beingassessed for, or are diagnosed with, a mental illness.Mental health refers to a person's cognitive andemotional wellbeing - how they think, feel and behave. Asis the case in physical health, nurses can promote mentalhealth by building good relationships with patients,encouraging healthy behaviours, and recognising andtreating symptoms early.

Following registration as a mental health nurse with the

Nursing and Midwifery Council, you can pursue a careerin a wide variety of settings and specialisms includinggeneral psychiatry in hospital and community settingssuch as adult and older adult specialist services (includingaddictions), children and young people, and forensicservices.

This course will also prove useful in the areas ofleadership, management and consultancy, as well aseducation and research. There are significantopportunities for further professional development andspecialism.

Finance

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK and EU students enrolling on the programme mayalso be eligible to apply for additional funding to helpwith living costs. This includes a training grant of at least£5,000 per annum for Nursing students, plus anadditional £1,000 per annum for specialising in mentalhealth nursing where demand is particularly high.
