Waverly Lady VikingsFundamentals for Grade Levels

3 rd and 4 th Grade: -Layups: Be able to jump correctly off left and right foot. Be able to make a layup with each hand. Using one or two dribbles

-Know what a Triple Threat position is: Square to the basket, be able to pass, shoot and dribble when catching a basketball

-Shooting Form: Players are able to follow through after shooting a basket

-Ball Handling: Players can successfully dribble length of the floor with both hands, may not be able to look up, but can dribble with both hands and have arm bar up to protect the ball

-Jump Stop: Players can dribble down court and jumpstop while being on balance, not traveling

-Defensive Slide: Player can defensive slide across the lane and can know what an athletic stance is, off the ball defense

-Passes: Players can successful throw a stationary chest, bounce and overhead snap pass-Offensive Movement: Players can make a pass to cut to the basket or screen away after making a pass to their teammate

-Defense: Athletic Stance, staying between man and ball, stop ball if you are guarding it, and knowing what help-side defense is (may not be able to successfully do it though).

5 th and 6 th Grade -Layups: Player can successfully dribble from the 3pt line, make a left and right handed layup with correct form and footwork. Also can use a jumpstop layup (I think we need to emphasize Jumpstop layups more. They are used more in a game scenario than a regular layup.)

-Ball Handling: Player can complete a crossover dribble with both hands, can use a hesitation dribble with both hands, and can go between legs with strong hand.

-Passing: Player can complete bounce and chest bounce while running up and down the court with a teammate. They can also successfully complete a post entry pass and know what a ball fake is.

-Footwork: Player knows what a jab step is, can rip the ball in triple threat, and knows what a shot fake is.

-Screens: Players know how to successfully screen an opponent, on ball and away from ball. They can also come off of a screen tight and catch the ball in triple threat. Defensively, players are able to use their hands to get through a screen and not let screen get to their body.

Rebounding: Players know how to successfully box someone out (knees bent, rear end in the opponent, elbows wide, and hands up).

Moves: Players are taught how to post up, drop step and baby hook. Can rip through and attack the lane with either hand, and jump stop for a jump shot.

Offense: Introduced to spacing concepts in 2 on 2 and 3 on 3 basketball.
