Call the Rabbi! Rabbi Konigsburg visits the local

hospitals on a regular basis. An

important part of his duties is to bring

comfort and healing to those who are

sick. Due to privacy laws, the

hospitals can’t tell him if one of our

members has been admitted. He could

be just down the hall, but if he doesn’t

know someone is there, he will not

know to make a visit. Please call the

Rabbi if you or someone you know is

in the hospital so a timely visit can be

HINENI SOCIETY תשע״ח 5778 2017/2018

For our Jewish community, our families, and ourselves, a strong, vibrant synagogue

is of vital importance. We are fortunate to have just such a synagogue here, one with

a full array of quality Jewish religious, educational, social and supportive programs. One reason for our success has been the Hineni Society. When these members are

asked to come forward and do more than their fair share, they say, “Hineni!”

(“Here I am!”). Through their generous contributions, every part of our synagogue

community has prospered. Hineni members see the wonderful things we offer. They

feel our Temple has proven itself worthy of their generous support. In fact, 43 families contributed about $50,000 to Hineni last year. Won’t you please

join them to ensure the continued strength of our beloved synagogue? I invite all

congregants to join us in Hineni, and proudly say:

“Here I Am, Ready To Do My Part!”

There are two levels of contribution: $1,000 (Hineni) and $1,800 (Hineni Chai). I

look forward to your participation. Please contact me with any questions at 860-604-

8816, or contact Saundra Roethel at the Temple office, 860-643-9563 ext. 100.

My best wishes to you and yours for a happy and healthy New Year,

Faithcraft

This time of year finds us reading again the stories at the

beginning of the Torah; Adam and Eve, Noah and his

family, Abraham and Sarah, Ishmael, Isaac and Rebecca,

Esau, Jacob, Rachel and Leah, Joseph and his brothers.

Only a few weeks ago we finished the last of the chapters

of Deuteronomy, and we immediately began again to read

the Torah from the Beginning.

It seems so ancient and quaint. We read Torah from a scroll, and when we

get to the end we roll it all back up and start again from the beginning.

Reading from a scroll is not even old technology; it is a technology that is

positively ancient. Scrolls gave way to books centuries ago. Books gave way

to CD-ROM disks that could contain entire libraries on one volume. Now we

can read text on our phones or on a Kindle, jumping to the exact place where

we might want to read.

My colleague, Rabbi Eddie Feinstein notes that despite the latest technology,

we still read our Torah from a scroll. He writes, “And we will read from a

scroll long after CD-ROMs are replaced in the next revolution. We do so not

out of stubborn adherence to ancient tradition and not just as a symbol of

the authenticity of ancient truth, but precisely because the scroll is so

inefficient, so slow, so linear. Only by reading in that format does each word

remain real and important. Written slowly and carefully. Read slowly and

carefully.”

Rabbi Feinstein understands that one does not read Torah for factual

information nor for moral certainty, but we read it to understand the varied

nuances of daily living. In the words of Torah, we find the word of God, not

Words from the President

Consider the following, A Short Story about a Long Life by

Gutman Locks:

The man was totally depressed. He was standing by the side

of the road speaking through the open window of my car.

His wife had left him. He had no job. Each day was a

burden, and worse yet, he was a burden to the world. In his

words, he was “totally useless.” I tried to cheer him up with

some words of hope, but he was firm in his belief. I left him with some

optimistic thought and darted into a U-turn, happy to go on to something

more cheerful.

Suddenly he screamed, “Stop!” I slammed on the brakes just in time to see

an extremely fast moving car whiz by.

I said to him: “If you hadn't called out, I would have been dead now. A few

seconds ago you felt useless without purpose, and now you have saved my

life! From this moment on, every good deed I do will also be credited to your

account.” His face lit up, as the many months of depression fell away. There

is a dawn, and even the darkest nights do pass. No one knows what the next

moment holds and to deny hope is to deny the constantly demonstrated fact

that, “This too will pass.”

As this season of Thanksgiving draws near, we should all be giving thanks

for what we have. We are blessed to be living in such a caring community

where we stand by each other in good times and bad.

Notes from the Cantor

The High Holidays have

come to a close, and I

am glad to have had my

first opportunity to share

them with you here at

BSBI. It was a privilege

to undertake the journey

of teshuva with you, to rejoice together in

the sukkah, and to dance with the Torah

at the culmination of this season. I am

grateful to all those whose voices and

energy helped to make these holidays

happen, whether you led a service or read

Torah, organized a meal or Kiddush,

helped with logistics, accepted an honor,

or simply were present during these days.

I also want to extend a special thank you

to Rabbi Konigsburg for his support and

presence, for his inspiring words of

Torah, and for being a fantastic clergy

partner through this High Holiday season.

As I write these words, we are about to

begin the Jewish month of Marcheshvan

(usually nicknamed Cheshvan), which is

famous for having no holidays at all. We

have now transitioned from kodesh, holy

space and holy time, to chol, the space

and time of the everyday. In addition to

being a nice break for those of us in

synagogue leadership, this month reminds

us of the need for both kodesh and chol.

Everyday time is the backdrop against

which holiness takes place. Holy time is

holy precisely because it is separate,

distinct from the everyday. Neither could

exist without the other.

But the idea of holy time as that which is

separate is complicated by a commentary

on Parashat Bereishit. In the biblical

creation story, God famously declares at

the end of each day of creation that “it

was good.” But “it was good” is missing

on one day: the second day, when God

creates a separation between sea and sky.

The Midrash explains that this is because

separation, even separation for the

purpose of creating order in the world,

cannot be called good. If this is the case,

how can we use the name “holy” for

times and spaces that we have set apart

from the everyday?

New Membership Tea Our New Membership Tea will be held

on Sunday, November 5th

at 2:00 pm, at

the Arbors of Hop Brook, 403 West

Center Street, Manchester. It will be an

Afternoon Tea with a presentation on the

History of Makeup in the last one hundred

years and how world events impact on the

way women have viewed themselves past

and present as a result. This is the

presentation that Rima Riedel (our very

own playwright) showcased at the

Women’s League Convention, and it was

a big hit.

So come, new members to meet us and

older members to welcome the new ones,

for a very special afternoon. See enclosed

flyer for more info.

Hadassah/Sisterhood Book Club The Hadassah/Sisterhood book club will

meet in the Silverstein Center on Monday,

November 13th

at 7:30 pm. At our

September gathering we decided that the

next book for us to read would be The Two-Family House by Lynda C.

Loigman.

The book tells the story of two brothers

working together and living with their

families, starting in Brooklyn in 1947,

in “The Two-Family House”. The story

starts with the brothers and wives in very

close relationships, but over the

decades how the consequences of long-

festering secrets and the lies that cover

them up affects all the family members.

The book is available at Mary Cheney

Library in the reference room. They

will be holding multiple copies for us.

Please plan to join us for a discussion

of this book and to help choose books

for future discussions.

Our book club will meet on the

second Monday of every other month,

January 8th

, March 12th, and May 7

th

(first Monday).

Happy reading!

Knit & Kvetch

This month, our meeting on Tuesday,

November 14th

at 1:30 – 3:30 pm is our

Annual Distribution Event. If you have

been knitting at home, this is the time

to bring items to BSBI. If anyone

wants to witness a miraculous

outpouring of loving dedication, they

should show up toward the end of this

event to see what is piled up on the

tables. We are always asking for

knitters, but we’d really like to stress

also the importance of receiving

donations. This is really important

work that we do everything we make is

given away to help keep others who are

not that fortunate warm. If you can’t

knit you can still help. It doesn't have

to be a huge amount; $5.00 goes a long

way towards buying yarn. Please make

sure that all donation checks are made

out to BSBI Sisterhood and

marked “Knit and Kvetch” on the

memo line. The checks can be left in

the BSBI office for us, but please

write Sisterhood on the envelope!

Any questions, you can call me at 860-

649-6551 or send me an e-mail at

[email protected].

It’s Time for Sisterhood’s Annual

Just in time for Thanksgiving we will

be holding our Annual Bake Sale

on Sunday, November 19, 9:00 am

- noon. PLEASE CALL SALLY

IVALDI at 860-647-8186 or

at [email protected] to offer to

bake (she needs to know what is

coming). Place food on disposable

plates and if you can, tell the

ingredients and also label if it is

from a Kosher home and if it is

Dairy or Pareve.

Then think about also buying a treat

to enhance either your Thanksgiving

or the Thanksgiving of your hosts.

Come Walk With Us, Again and

Again!

We are continuing our “Walking

and Adventuring” on the last

Sunday of each month. Our next one

will be on Sunday, November 26th

What a busy October and November

for our Brotherhood, with both events

and planning for future programs.

On October 22nd

, we participated in

the Keepers of the Flame Celebration,

held at Congregation Or Shalom in

Orange. Our recipient of this

prestigious award was Ari Hartstein.

Ari has worked tirelessly as our

Treasurer for the past eight years and

has either coordinated or participated

in many of our programs.

On October 8th

, we held our Steak

and Schnapps event in the

synagogue’s sukkah. Our program,

Hearing Men’s Voices, allows men to

discuss specific topics in a

confidential setting. With almost thirty

participants, the discussions were both

lively and helpful.

Prior to our sukkah event, on the

morning of October 8th

, a number of

Brotherhood members participated in

the Tour de Shul’s bicycle ride.

Money raised for this event supports

Camp Ramah's Tikvah and Camp

Jack Libow Bar Mitzvah December 2, 2017

10:00 am Jack Libow will be called to the Torah

as a Bar Mitzvah on December 2nd,

2017. His parents, Joya and Jamie,

along with his proud older sister

Jaiden are looking forward to

celebrating Jack’s milestone with

family, friends, and the congregation.

Jack is an honor roll student at Timothy Edwards Middle

School and plays the cello in the school orchestra. His

hobbies include CrossFit and basketball. He is a huge NY

Knicks fan and hopes to see them win a championship one

day. He is working very diligently with Dr. Mandell to

prepare for his Bar Mitzvah, and is looking forward to it.

Social Action Updates

We will be holding a Book Drive in conjunction with the

Jewish Federation to support their literacy program

called Children's Reading Partners. They send volunteers

into public schools in Hartford to read with at risk kids.

They collect books so that their volunteers can give each

child they work with a book to keep at the end of the

school year. So, if you would like to donate new or

gently used books for children in grades K-5, please drop

them in the bin which will be available at the temple the

week of November 27th

. Your donation could bring joy

to a child and inspire the love of reading! If you are

interested in being a volunteer reading mentor, you can

contact Alana Butler, Director of Community

Engagement at the Jewish Federation, 860-727-6152.

Social Action will be distributing hats for the homeless!

With the cold months upon us, we know that those who

are out in the cold will need hats to help them stay warm.

Knit & Kvetch will be providing some hand knitted hats,

and Social Action will be using some of its funds to

purchase dozens more to give to MACC to distribute to

those in our community who need our help. If anyone

wants to be part of this effort and would like to donate a

new hat or more, please leave them in a plastic bin that

will be provided in the coatroom. We hope to have all

the hats delivered by mid-November.

Library Corner Dave Alter, Librarian

Introducing the Jewish Library Classification

System

The lack of a satisfactory classification scheme

for the Jewish library has long been a problem

to the Jewish librarian. Many solutions have

been suggested and attempted, with varying

degrees of success.

The classification scheme of the Library of

Congress, which has now been adopted by most

of the great scholarly Jewish libraries of the

country, suffers from the drawback of being

unknown to most of the general public. On the

other hand, the Dewey Decimal System as it

stands, although familiar even to school

children, presents certain difficulties when

applied to a specialized collection. The

excessive subdivision required in certain

numbers, the lack of provision for certain

subject areas which do not fit satisfactorily into

the Dewey system, are drawbacks which

librarians in the Jewish field have long struggled

with.

It was to meet these objections that Mae Weine

devised the present scheme. Although based

upon the Dewey system, certain areas have been

drastically revised, most notably in the fields of

religion, Jewish education, and history. In every

case, whether or not explicitly stated, the

number refers only to the Jewish aspect of the

subject in question. Since the scheme is intended

only for Judaica collections, the letter "z" has

been added throughout, to distinguish it from the

regular Dewey system. This will be useful in the

case of librarians with "mixed" collections, i.e.,

containing books of a general as well as of a

Jewish nature.

This classification scheme is intended primarily

for a small Judaica library, such as one in a

synagogue or school. Very large or very

scholarly collections will probably find the

Library of Congress classification more suited to

their needs.

RLWRS News

Religious School Update from Cantor Bolts

This month at RLWRS we’ve been learning about Torah and Hebrew, as well as

celebrating the holidays together! Our kindergarten class started to learn the letters

of the Alef-Bet, made Rosh Hashanah cards, and learned some stories from the

Torah. 2nd

and 4th grades learned about the five books of the Torah, visited the

sanctuary to learn how to navigate the Chumash (Torah and Haftarah book), began

their study of Bible stories with the Creation story, and talked about the importance

of tzedakah (charity). 6th and 7

th grades decorated their own kippot, learned about the

many languages that Jews have spoken over the centuries, and began to study

parashat hashavua (the weekly Torah portion). 6th grade also began their study of

the Prophets, while 7th grade began to learn about the holidays through the lens of

their corresponding liturgical and biblical texts.

All of our classes had a chance to make sukkah decorations and put

them up inside the shul sukkah. Rain kept us inside for our school-

wide Sukkot program, but we still had fun learning about the

symbolism of the lulav and etrog. Everyone also had a chance to shake

the lulav and do hoshanot together (marching in a circle with the lulav

to pray for rain).

We were glad that some of our religious school families were able to

join us for BSBI’s Simchat Torah celebration. Our students had fun

wearing their silly hats and dancing with flags and plush Torah scrolls.

They even got to help lead an Israeli dance for the rest of the

community!

Shabbat Learning Programs

This Month in Jewish History: 12 Heshvan – 12 Kislev By Rabbi Konigsburg

15 Heshvan: The first and biggest pogrom of Nazi Germany, Kristallnacht (the Night of

Broken Glass) took place throughout Germany and Austria. Jewish businesses, homes and

synagogues were ransacked and destroyed in 1938.

16 Heshvan: Yahrzeit of Sabato Morais, the founder of the Jewish Theological Seminary.

27 Heshvan: Jews College in London, a seminary for the training of Hebrew Teachers and

Rabbis, was founded on this date in 1855 by Rabbi Nathan Adler.

5 Kislev: The siege of Jerusalem was officially broken with the opening of “The Road of

Valor,” also called “The Burma Road,” that connected Jerusalem with the rest of Jewish

Palestine in 1948.

10 Kislev: Anwar el Sadat, President of Egypt, addressed the Knesset in Jerusalem in 1977.

He was the first Arab head of state to ever visit Israel and address the Knesset.

just teaching our ancestors basic truths, but

teaching us those truths as well. Just when

we think we know and understand one of the

stories of the Torah, just when we think we

have mastered a basic mitzvah, we read it

again and find new meaning and new truth in

the old familiar words. Just as life has to be

lived one day at a time, Torah has to be read

one word, sometimes one letter at a time.

Often, our new understanding of Torah

comes to us not because the words have

changed, but we have grown since our last

time in this chapter. Life has taught us new

lessons, and Torah now is able to speak to us

as we stand looking at Torah from a different

perspective. A first-time parent reading about

Joseph and his brothers would see the story

differently from the point of view of a parent

Notes from the Cantor,

I think we can find an answer

in the fact that the sky and the

sea, while separate, are not

completely so. They are

connected by the rains that fall

from the sky to the sea, and by

evaporation that returns water

from the sea to the sky.

Likewise, kodesh and chol can

never be entirely separate.

Even in this month of chol, we

still have Shabbat every week

to bring us back to kodesh. The

story of creation and the month

of Cheshvan thus function as

reminders not to lose sight of

the ordinary in the holy, nor of

the holy in the ordinary.

grandchildren will read about Abraham and

of Adam and Eve, we see the world anew

just as they did every morning after creation.

Rabbi Feinstein writes, “Each information

revolution has put us in touch with so many

more words so much more quickly; but each has compromised the depth of the words we

touch. To know the soul of Torah is to read

deeply, and slowly and reflectively.”

IRA Assets and Qualified Charitable Distributions

BSBI’s would like to encourage charitable donations to the Endowment Board of Trustees. At this time I would like to

review some of the benefits of gifting Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) to the Endowment.

Donation of “Qualified Charitable Distributions” (QCD)

In legislation at year end 2016, Congress made permanent Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from individual

retirement accounts.

What are QCDs?

A QCD permits annual direct transfers to a qualified charity (or charities) totaling up to $100,000 of tax-deferred IRA

savings. QCDs offer advantages over taking a taxable IRA distribution and then contributing the proceeds of that

distribution to a charity. That’s because taxable IRA distributions must be included in adjusted gross income. Importantly,

QCDs automatically satisfy required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year when the QCD is made. That’s a real

advantage for a charitably minded IRA owner who doesn’t depend on some or all of the RMD for living expenses.

What are important things to know about QCDs?

Only individuals who’ve attained age 70 ½ may make QCDs. The charitable organization must be an organization that

qualifies for a charitable income tax deduction of an individual. The Beth Sholom B’nai Israel Endowment qualifies as

such an organization. The BSBI Endowment will be required to provide the same contribution acknowledgement to the

owner of the IRA claiming a charitable tax deduction. Failure to obtain the acknowledgement will quash the QCD. QCDs

may be made from any IRA or individual retirement annuity, but not from a simplified employee pension, a simple

retirement account, or an inherited IRA. Among other benefits, the use of QCDs for charity may reduce taxable income,

reduce state and federal tax, reduce taxation of social security, reduce supplemental IRMMA payments to Medicare parts

B and D. Individuals and couples with low as well as high incomes may benefit by contributing QCDs to charity.

Examples of using QCDs for charitable giving

One example of optimizing the use of QCD is to establish a perpetual endowment fund. By making a QCD donation to the

Endowment of BSBI the donor may create a $25,000 endowment for BSBI. This endowment may be given over the course

of a number of years to reach the level necessary to provide perpetual support of a $1000 to Hineni. By adding to the

donation annually the donor could reach a $45,000 over a number of years. This amount would support a perpetual

Hineni donation at the $1800 per year level. Details of further possibilities and arrangements for payment can be

obtained from the Endowment members or via email noted below.

For further information, contact a member

of the Endowment Committee. You may

reach out to the BSBI Endowment by e-

mail at [email protected] or

directly to Roy Filkoff or Jeff Wasser.

Remember to discuss this and all other tax

matters with your tax advisor before taking

any action.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Wasser, MD

President BSBI Endowment

In order to ensure that we have the best equipment and procedures for emergency situations, we would

like to purchase a defibrillator (AED). The cost is about $1,800.00 dollars. To do this, we are asking

congregants to make a small donation ($10-$20) as the easiest way to fund this project. You can make

your checks out to BSBI and send them to the office marked AED fund. We have been working diligently over the last few years to make our building both

secure and safe. This item, although we hope never to have to use it, will be available in the event of a

sudden episode.

Count Your Blessings

Please join us in supporting our synagogue’s “Turkey Fund” so that Thanksgiving Baskets can be delivered to

needy families in our community. Because people are hungry not only at holiday time but throughout the year the

funds we raise now give ongoing help to the MACC Food Pantry, HVCC, and the Jewish Services Food Pantry.

This year, while you are preparing for the holidays, we hope you are thinking about the many blessings in your

own life and, in gratitude, donate to the “Turkey Fund.” Think of family; a home, job, and vacation; trees, flowers,

and music; good news, good health, good friends, and more.
