Degree Plans
Required of all BSBA students Semester by semester detailed itinerary from now
through graduation Include which specific courses would be preferred (such as
MGMT 350 as a 3/400 business elective; FIN 433 for a FIN elective (A))
Degree plan should be for what you are intending to pursue at this time, not what is coded
Long term schedules? Look to: Typical cycle courses Distance Learning website w/3 year slate (see Resources slide at
end of presentation)
What courses am I taking again?
Look to 12-13 University Catalog (http://catalog.odu.edu) University-wide requirement
Lower General Education Requirements Upper General Education Requirements
Second Major Minors Interdisciplinary minors (clusters revised) (INBU majors
are required to complete the Int‘l Regional Study courses specific to their region of study)
Option D – 6 credits of 3/400 non-business courses
College-wide requirement Department requirement Course descriptions
What courses am I taking again?
Pre-reqs/policies vs. curriculum requirements Pre-reqs/policies – always based off most recent
catalog Curriculum requirements based on catalog a student
entered under or any other catalog issued thereafter. If entering in Fall 2011, can choose the 11-12 or 12-13
Catalog but not any earlier Catalogs expire within 8 years of issuance (06-08 Catalog
expired by end of Summer 2014; 08-09 Catalog set to expire by end of Summer 2016)
Catalogs based on academic year (12-13 for Fall 2012 – Summer 2013)
Suggestions
Consider your current GPA when determining what is left. If your major or CBK GPA is too low and you will need to retake a course or two, build that into your plan.
Check pre-reqs! Watch for grade pre-reqs too!
If an INBU major, required to Study Abroad
Suggestions, cont’d
See CBPA UGA website with general cycle courses
DSCI 306/ECON 301 before OPMT 303 MGMT 485W should not be in the last
semester if it can be avoided Try not to take capstone/intensive major
courses with MGMT 485W in the same semester, if possible Such as ACCT 460, FIN 435/439, or MKTG
490
Other Important Policies (12-13 Catalog)
Second major vs. second degree There is a difference
Experiential Learning such as departmental and national exams, portfolios, etc.
Grades and continuance policy Many more… By not mentioning them
here does not mean they do not warrant mentioning at all! Learn to read the Catalog.
Are you admitted to CBPA?
vs. Intended; Accounting
Are you admitted to CBPA?
If your coding says “Intended”, you are not admitted. If you thought you were admitted but your coding says you are not,
you would most likely need to resubmit your resume to CMC and application for admissions to the Dean’s Office. If you are not able to apply to the College yet but would like your
intended major coding to be switched (i.e. from ACCT Intended to MKTG Intended), submit a request via the web: http://www.odu.edu/forms_admin/viewform.php?formid=7857.
If you are not declared in a major, you will be prevented from registering for 3/400 business courses until accepted. Do not wait until registration period to start the application process.
If your coding shows the degree as “BS in Business Admin”, you are admitted. If you wish to have your coded major changed, add a concentration
to your current major, add a second business major, or declare a business minor, submit a request via the web: http://www.odu.edu/forms_admin/viewform.php?formid=8798.
Don’t forget!
CBPA Admissions process – resumé must be completed first
Writing Sample Placement Test (completed prior to entry to ODU)
University Writing Requirement (completed prior to graduation)
Senior Assessment (completed in final semester) There should be only two things remaining for any
senior in their FINAL semester: Senior Assessment and final grades. That’s it! Anything more and you are already behind!
To graduate means having:
120 total credit hours Individual course satisfaction as outlined
in the University Catalog Overall, CBK, major(s), and if applicable,
minor(s) at least a 2.0 GPA Academic Residency
If it’s in the University Catalog, you are
responsible for it!
Transfer Equivalencies
Did you take a course elsewhere it didn’t match what you thought it was supposed to when it transferred to ODU? Monarch Transfermation - usual process, send course
description/syllabus of other school’s course to dept. chair If you wish to contest what Admissions awarded your transfer credits,
send separate email to [email protected] with: Name UIN Name of course here at ODU it did transfer over as Name of course here at ODU you thought it should have transferred
as Name of course at other institution
Please note that courses from the VCCS system are part of an articulation agreement and most departments have already reviewed equivalencies.
Other Cautionary Issues
Email [email protected] if you were awarded credit for GNRL 2ELE that was a business course elsewhere.
If you see duplicate credit for the same exact specific course, notify [email protected] with name, UIN, and course(s). By specific, we mean: ACCT 201 transferred twice - not good! HIST 1ELE transferred twice – not a problem.
Other Cautionary Issues, Cont’d
Transfer equivalencies and experiential learning credits should be completed and recorded to the ODU transcript pursued by the student as soon as possible. Process can take awhile to update.
Memos of any exception to the catalog should be in writing and submitted to the CBPA UGA office ([email protected]) so that a copy can also be kept in your hard copy file and submitted to get recorded on your DegreeWorks evaluation.
Students who started at ODU in or before Summer 2010 but see later catalog dates on the Degree Works can contact us ([email protected]) about proper catalog listings.
Once Prepared, Now What?
Submit a request to the CBPA UGA office to review your plan: http://ww2.odu.edu/forms_admin/viewform.php?formid=13598.
Please allow sufficient time for an advisor to review your plan. You will hear back either way: If changes are necessary, you will be emailed. If it looks good, your advisor hold could be removed
for more than one semester. See Advising Structure Change slide for details.
CBPA Advising Structure Change – Applicable after vetted DP
As a student completes a degree plan AND has it vetted by the CBPA UGA office, they will shift into the new Advising Structure where the following will apply: Holds potentially removed for up to 1-6 years, based on degree plan
Pending Overall and CBK GPAs remain above a 2.3 GPA or hold is immediately re-implemented!
Freshmen meet with Academic Enhancement Advisor in Fall/Spring. First semester transfer students will meet with the CBPA UGA office during
Preview and within the start of their first semester. Sophomores and Juniors can choose to meet with Faculty Advisor for an
annual “check-up”/conversation. Students with either an Overall or CBK GPA<2.0 will meet with the CBPA UGA
office. For those students with Overall or CBK GPAs between a 2.0 and 2.3 will meet
continue to meet with their assigned advisor for F11/SP12. (Eventually, these students will meet with the CBPA UGA office in future semesters.)
Seniors have senior audit appointment and for graduation paperwork via: individual appointment (GPA<2.3), group Senior Meeting (Overall GPA>2.3) , and for those interested, via email request (if GPA>3.6).
