FACILITATING GOOD SHIPYARD DESIGN

Good shipyard design delivers a facility that:

Meets the required operational parameters

incorporating state-of-the-art technology

Efficient in terms of:

Capital cost

Maintenance cost

Construction time

BS6349 Part 3 has been revised to meet these client

focussed criteria.

FACILITATING GOOD SHIPYARD DESIGN

To obtain good investment value in developing

inherently expensive shipyard facilities, two fundamental

questions need to be answered:

Q1 What extent and size of facilities are actually needed to

be developed?

Q2 What is the real cost of developing the facilities?

Page 5: BS 6349:Part 3 Design of Shipyards and Sea Locks The new ... · The new issues for shipyard facilities “Operational Efficiency at Minimum Facility Cost ... Maritime structure layout

FACILITATING GOOD SHIPYARD DESIGN

Q1 What extent and size of facilities are actually needed

to be developed?

Answered by thorough planning of the facilities to ensure that

the facilities will be:

Operationally and functionally adequate

And

Not wastefully over-specified

FACILITATING GOOD SHIPYARD DESIGN

Common Section Structure

In the revised BS6349 Part 3 2013 all sections have a

common structure. This helps the designer at the high level

shipyard planning stage and at the individual facility level, to

establish the necessary Operational Parameters before

proceeding with the full design.

Operational parameters

what is the facility for and why it is necessary?

Siting

where should the facility be located?

Elements

what are the key factors or items that need to be

included and what are their specific design

parameters?

Equipment

what equipment is needed to make the facility work?

FACILITATING GOOD SHIPYARD DESIGN

Q2 What is the real cost of developing the facilities?

The revised Part 3 helps the designer to make sure all

disciplines and related cost items are identified and the most

efficient combination of technical solutions is adopted across

all disciplines:

Maritime structures USD?

Operational equipment USD?

Mechanical and electrical systems USD?

TOTAL USD?

Realistic cost estimates soundly based on feedback from

similar current project cost data.

CLEAR BASIS OF DESIGN

BS6349 Part 3 2013 helps the designer to achieve in

conjunction with the facilities owner

Economies of scale across all facilities

Economy of common elements

Economy of future facility extension or phases

Incorporation of technological development

….and through planning the whole site-wide facilities to

create a Basis of Design document at Shipyard level

covering all design disciplines

Facility Basis of Design includes all design disciplines

required for that particular facility

Maritime structures

Mechanical and electrical services

Operational equipment

Control systems

CHANGES AND NEW SECTIONS

New Section – Shipyard Piers and Quays

The structural design of piers and quays is covered by

BS6349 Part 2 2010.

This section of Part 3 focusses on the particular functional

requirements for shipyards, principally:

Broad range of ship types and sizes

Mechanical and electrical services

Personnel access to ships

Cranage

Page 16: BS 6349:Part 3 Design of Shipyards and Sea Locks The new ... · The new issues for shipyard facilities “Operational Efficiency at Minimum Facility Cost ... Maritime structure layout

CHANGES AND NEW SECTIONS

New Section – Floating Docks

Floating docks are generally proprietary designs which were

covered in the now out of date Part 6. This sections covers

the whole subject of floating docks facilities:

Floating dock types

Moorings

Dock pit

Pedestrian & vehicular access

Support services

CHANGES AND NEW SECTIONS

New Section – Hydrolifts

The Hydrolift concept is rarely adopted, possibly due its

absence from main-stream design guides. This has now

been rectified. Relatively simple in principle it can prove to

be a very flexible and efficient method of launching and

retrieving ships.

This section covers:

Principals of operation

Key considerations which differ from locks and dry

dock structures

Entrance gate

Entrance works

Impounding basin

Landward gate

CHANGES AND NEW SECTIONS

New Section – Piped Services and Electrical Distribution

Systems

Mechanical and electrical services in shipyards are

fundamental to all operations. This section covers the design

considerations of the distribution of these services between

the facility boundaries and their spatial requirements which

impact the maritime structures.

CHANGES AND NEW SECTIONS

New Section – Control Systems

Technological advances in instrumented control of shipyard

equipment affects the design of each facility:

Benefits are:

Reducing health and safety risks during operation of the

facilities

Increasing operational reliability and speed up operations

Reducing consumption of power and other utilities improving

the environmental performance of the shipyard

Scope of system levels to be determined:

Automation

Redundancy

Reliability

Availability

Safety
