Concentrated Bullsheet

G’Day to you all out there in Subaru land. The club keeps on sustaining much the same numbers of members but the bills keep on growing. We need to find ways to save money. One of our biggest expenses is this wonderful magazine, its printing and postage. There are a couple of ideas that we need your input on, before we move on it. They are: 1. Pick up the Bullsheet at the meeting and post out only

the uncollected magazines. 2. Further reduce the number sent out to other clubs 3. Email out via a PDF version of the Bullsheet, while still

sending hard copies to our advertisers and supporters. Also the committee are exploring fundraising options, but we need your help to make whatever we do work, please volunteer your time to help when the time comes. The daylight savings BBQ’s before the meeting are on again, see page 9 for details. As usual the trips are drying up as summer closes in, so if you can lead a day trip like a beach day, bakery run, bowl-ing night , indoor rock climbing or something you would like to try let Grace know and we will get it up on the trip board. Have you got your Christmas shopping organised? Don't forget to get a raffle prize to donate to the club Christmas raffle. Anyway that all for now, hope to see you along the fence line soon, Cheers Shinksy

Dear Editor I have been prompted to write this article after reading Grace’s report of the Dutch-man’s Stern Working Bee (Bullsheet September, 2012). Of particular interest was the photos of the Prickly Pear being poisoned . On our recent travels through Queensland and NSW, I was in awe of the size of some of the Prickly Pear trees on the roadsides. I took some photos whilst travelling along so they are not the clearest, but to give some idea of size, they would be as tall as houses. Knowing that here in SA they are a noxious weed, I thought how come they let them grow that big in Queensland and NSW. After reading in one of the many museums we visited, I found information regarding the reason they are on roadsides but maybe not in paddocks on farms . Lessees could eventually own the land - if they cleaned up the pear. There is heaps of information at www northwestweeds.nsw.gov.au/prickly_pear_history.htm 1924/5 Introduction of "Prickly Pear Leases" - Crown lands so heavily infested with prickly pear as to be unproductive. The blocks were granted to lessees for an initial period of 21 years (many were later extended) at a very low rental on the condition that a specified number of acres were cleared and maintained until the total lease was cleared of prickly pear. At that stage they could then apply to change the title to freehold and it became their land. As it happened, the cactoblastis subsequently wiped out most of the prickly pear anyway! So those members tirelessly working poisoning the wretched things, well done and I bet you are glad you were not doing that to the huge ones in Queensland, Val Oakley

Committee thank you

The committee always does a lot to help the club function. It is often the usual suspects who hold committee positions. To thank them for their help to the club, and to me, I invited the committee and their families to join me in a Sunset Cham-paign and Chicken dinner on the Bridle track. We stayed at Mount Remarkable national park, and toured the mid north, visiting a couple of the local wineries along the way. The kids explored the outdoors, we all had a great time. Paul Shinks

1991 Subaru Brumby Ute (Real must read ad from Gumtree!) $5,000.00 Margaret River WA 6285

Fabricated from rare minerals excavated from the core of Mount Olympus, artfully designed by Zeus and skillfully hand crafted in the Land of the Rising Sun by the deft hands of the infamous 7 Samurai. This Japanese rice-rocket is unquestionably the most heroic form of transport since the Apollo 11 lunar module. Searching for a delightful automobile to ferry you to Angus and Robertson to buy 50 shades of Grey, or perhaps cart little Timmy to clarinet lessons? Do me a favour, smash your laptop on the ground, give yourself an uppercut and take a good, long look in the mirror. Frankly, I’m offended. If, on the other hand, you’re hunting for the most diabolical slab of precious metal to be synthesised during the Big Bang, please continue… To date, the most monumental day of your existence was your wedding, or the birth of your children. That’s about to change! In fact, you’d trade your spouse and all of your offspring just to test-drive this barbarian. FACTS: In 1885, this car transported the Statue of Liberty to New York City from Paris. Cast as KITT in 1982’s Knight Rider TV series, but eventually deemed too intelligent for the role. Manufactured in 1991, this Brumby was responsible for the Grunge movement. If Kurt Cobain owned one, Nirvana would still be thrashing out tunes. I drove it to my last job interview and my employer handed me his résumé. If you were to be run over by this beast, you’d have to fight off the strong urge to thank the driver. When the cops pulled me over a few weeks ago, they were lucky to leave with a warning. SPECIFICATIONS: Bullbar forged from unicorn horns. 2 seats (thrones) upholstered with Albino Panda fur. Stereo system used for sound engineering the U2 360 tour. Built-in chick/dude magnet (it knows your preference). Integrated time machine (takes you back to 1991 when you step inside), Powered by nuclear fusion (makes Coles/Woolies fuel vouchers redundant) Windscreen wiper jets filled with the tears of Jesus (washes away the most sinful grime) No power steering (so you better start pumping iron to shred your biceps), Analogue clock (ask your Grandfather how to read it). PRICE: $5,000 or 6.5kg of freshly minted Swiss gold bullion Reasonable offers accepted. (Example of a reasonable offer: $10,000 +)

Subaru in Australia Subaru began as a Japanese company with its eyes on the sky instead of the ground. The Aircraft Re-search Laboratory began in 1917 with the ambitious goal to produce technologically advanced aircraft. The company went through a drastic reorganization process in 1931 and became the Nakajima Aircraft

Co., named after the Aircraft Research Laboratory’s head Chikuhei Nakajima. Under this incarnation, Nakajima Aircraft Co. designed and implemented the infamous Zero aircraft of World War II. However, in 1946, the company was again reorganized and became the Fuji Sangyo Co., LTD. The ingenious Fuji Sangyo turned the wartime stock of airplane parts into a post war gold mine, the rabbit motor scooters. From here, the company began its focus on ground transpor-tation.

After several more restructuring, reorganizing, and reshuffling acts, the company finally became the Fuji Heavy Industries as it is known today. Fuji Heavy Industries is the parent company of Subaru, which means “unite” in Japanese. This final restructuring happened in 1955, which is one year after the com-pany began to produce automobiles. The first automobile constructed by the future parent company of Subaru was the P1, a popular model of automobile that had a strong and sturdy reputation. It was not until 1973 that Subaru made its way to Australia. During this time, the Japanese company began first importing its Subaru vehicles into Australia. At this time, there are no Subaru vehicles or compo-nents manufactured or assembled in Australia. However, Subaru Australia experiences continually high net sales on an annual basis and the vehicle itself has experienced a great amount of success in the country’s gruelling rallies and automobile races. Other car manufacturers have begun to create partnerships with Su-baru, including their rival Toyota. The Subaru factory in Lafayette, Indiana will also begin producing Toyota Camry’s in addition to the Subaru vehicles that come off the assembly line. Furthermore, General Motors owns approximately 15 per cent of Fuji Heavy Industries, with Toyota owning another eight per cent. Australian Subaru automobiles are typically manufactured and assembled at the company’s Japanese plants. There are several models of Subaru vehicles currently on the Australian market, with the most popular being the Forrester and the Liberty. The Liberty is sold under the name Legacy in other parts of the world. Subaru’s Impreza also has a high sales rate in Australia. These vehicles continue to win awards based on their high quality construction, safety, and durability. Furthermore, since 1998, all Su-baru vehicles sold in Australia have been equipped with four wheel drive capabilities. This shift has made Australia the third largest market for the Subaru family of vehicles. The company’s largest market is Japan with the second largest market being the United States. When it comes to automobile racing and road rallies, Subaru continues to out-perform the rest of the class. In fact, Australia’s Subaru Rally Team boasts more championship titles than any other team in the history of the country’s racing sport. Furthermore, Subaru vehicles have repeatedly experienced victories in Australian road rallies, as well as major international road rallies. From http://www.onecar.com.au/subaru.php

Subaru began as a Japanese company with its eyes on the sky instead of the ground.

Christmas Dinner at the Genghis Khan Restaurant Friday 16th November

Be there 7pm for a 7:30 sitting Cost:$21.50 per head

264 Montacute Road Rostrevor Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant is a bustling restaurant that has given diners a glimpse of Mongolian traditional cooking style for nearly 30 years. Fon, the owner and Manager, delights in providing a truly delicious meal cooked right in front of the diner to their exact wishes. Go on, visit the Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant with your club mates and celebrate Christmas and the coming new year The History of Genghis Khan Mongolian Barbeque In the 13th Century, all of East Central Asia was united under the great mogul ruler Genghis Khan. The Mogul Empire was the greatest land conquest in world history. At its height, it stretched from China to the hills of Hungary. All armies, they say, march on their stomach and so it was with Mongolian warriors. Their basic day to day meals were tenderized strips of meat carried under their sad-dles, but it was the Victory Meal that has been passed down today by the descen-dants of these superb warriors. After battles, the Moguls would go hunting with lances, bows and arrows. The meat, quickly frozen by the chilled air on the arid steppes, was sliced thinly and barbecued on their shields of war. Slender branches from trees were used to toss the food - a kind of Mongolian chopstick, this superb culinary concept has now arrived in Adelaide in a very pure form. Conqueror’s Grill The war shield is now a standardized round plate but are still true to the original shape and metal. Giant Chopsticks The small branches are now elongated chopsticks used by our chef.

Hmmmm

a bit of a resemblance???????

“KEEPING IN TOUCH” number 2

A PRODUCTION FROM THE FWDSA EXECUTIVE Ongoing dialogue between FWDSA and DEWNR regarding the implementation of the “Environmental Vandalism Form”. There were quite a few suggestions put to us on what it will be called and at the last Delegates Meeting it was decided that the acronym R.E.D. seemed right for what we wanted.

R.E.D. stands for Report Environmental Damage. Don and Lee are Meeting with Tony from DEWNR to finalise the form. Once finalised and agreed to by all it will be available on the FWDSA Website. Clubs are very happy with the “new look” Minutes and being able to download them from the FWDSA Website. The Secretary will notify the Delegates, Secretaries when they are posted on our Website. John Newman will continue on as FWDSA Treasurer due to no one taking on that role at the last AGM and we ALL thank John very much for that. The Executive have accepted John Henderson’s resignation and the ceasing of the 4WD Adventurers out sourcing role for the 4WDV Matters and NRAU Newsletters. A letter has been sent to the 4WD Adventurers thanking them for their assistance in the production of 4WD Matters and NRAU Newsletter. The Executive have discussed how we will can fill the role (left by John Henderson) to produce a new format to get the relevant information to the Clubs, hence "KEEPING IN TOUCH". OR K.I.T as it will be called. FWDSA will be creating a Face book site/page. FWDV and FWDQ have face book pages and receive quite a few hits. More to follow on this. FWDSA recently visited the Land Rover Register Club re “joining” FWDSA and we are waiting for their decision. DTU may run 6 new Trainers courses as well as 2 new Assessors courses and there are also 3 new Modules, (a) Risk management (b) OH&S (c) Emergency response and the RTO registration/audit due next year. Executive to source a replacement “display coordinator” solely for running the Caravan & Camping Shows as well as the Leisurefest. We are currently negotiating with Geoff Green and I can now officially tell you that Geoff Green has taken on the role. Geoff will be in contact with the "happy band of helpers" that have given up their time to help out at the various Caravan & Camping Shows as well as the Lei-surefest at West Beach. The Website needs a major upgrade i.e. a calendar for the Executive & Delegates Meeting Dates will be added shortly as there is still some confusion in regards to Meeting dates.

NB The Morgan Quarry has re-opened to FWDSA Clubs BUT we ask that you keep away from the site where the Indigenous remains were found. It is marked and will eventually be fenced off. Same proce-

dure applies as before, booking on FWDSA Website., www.4wdsa.asn.au

“KEEPING IN TOUCH” umber 3 19/10/12 A PRODUCTION FROM THE FWDSA EXECUTIVE

The ANFWDC held it’s General, Annual General and State Insurance Officers meetings in Brisbane on the weekend of the 15th–16th September 2012. A full copy will be available once they are ratified. Some points to come out of that meeting are,

(a) The Meeting was addressed by the Hon Steven Dickson MP Minister for National Parks, Recrea-

tion, Sport and Racing in Qld. (In short) Steven wants to hear and work with us, know more about the QLD trails concept, wants submissions from 4WDQLD. WILL NOT fund the administration, wants to build access and trails (for Tourism), looking at a new permit system in Qld, “One permit system for the whole of the State”, looking at the cost of the permit fee and he would like our support. We agreed to support it but want a cost that is NOT prohibitive. Fraser Island is an example where Clubs have to buy a Permit to clean-up the Island. The Minister will investigate the best way of issuing permits as there have been some on-line problems. Lee said the ANFWDC has been issuing CSR Permits on-line for five (5) years with very few problems. Looking into the size of campsites; they are too small for today’s travelers. A new promotional campaign, “Driving on a Beach/Watch out for Children”. The Minister said he loved the idea and said they could send them out via every registration renewal certificate. (b) Native title has been granted to tracks in the Kimberly’s and an exploration company wants access to the land. ANFWDC will “possibly” be issuing Permits. At this stage no costs discussed but they will be kept to a minimum. (c) The early Holden Colorado advert used a snatch strap on a tow ball to retrieve a vehicle. The ANFWDC contacted the Advertising Agency which changed the Advert to meet our safety require-ments. (d) The KJ Org told us that they will be issuing CSR Permits (effective 1st Oct 2012). NB Since the Meeting the major landowners along the CSR the Martu people had no idea this is taking place and have demanded that we continue issuing the permits. The ANFWDC will still continue issuing permits until further notice. (e) A Business Plan meeting has been set for November to provide direction for the ANFWDC. i.e. Me-dia policy, Federal and State Ministerial contacts, Advertising agency contacts and its merchandising and marketing strategies. (f) State Insurance Officers Report The Voluntary workers insurance scheme, 85%-90% of hours being used. Cost to remain the same but hours need to be increased to 2500 hours (a year). A basic guide to insurance was discussed but would raise more questions than answers. A FAQ document to be investigated as well as a Special Events guide for Clubs. A competition is being run through the SIO’s to obtain individual email addresses. Con-fidentiality is paramount and held by the State Association. Reasoning is to get information out to indi-vidual Club members direct. No information will be sent unless approved by the respective State Asso-ciations Executive. SIO’s will now only meet once a year (in Adelaide March/April) approx two (2) weeks prior to the ANFWDC meeting so SIO’s Minutes are available. Gunther Kettniss (former Qld SIO) was appointed as the States Insurance Coordinator. This is a Project type role, i.e. if a State is falling behind in MV insurance take-up then Gunther will contact the SIO and get him/her to “get out to the Clubs and inform the members about the scheme”. The SIO’s will create a PID and responsibilities for this position.

Page 19: BS-2012-11

17

(g) VSI50 vehicle modifications were discussed and the ANFWDC, AAAA are working on a standard to ensure that after a vehicle leaves the ‘car yard” all modifications i.e. lift kits etc are done to a safety standard. (h) CBT (ANFWDC training manuals) reported that the “new” manuals were being printed and there are new sections covering oil and mining companies, all wheel drive vehicles. Ian is contacting all RTO’s that use the manuals to create a 4WD RTO interest group. This group will have input into future RTO training needs. (i) FWDV put forward ten (10) questions regarding the ANFWDC. All were answered to their satisfac-tion BUT the ANFWDC needs to do more and with a new President at the helm this should be achieved. (j) FWDSA moved that the ANFWDC needs to change its name from the ANFWDC to Four Wheel Drive Australia. The ANFWDC has FWDA as a “trading name” with ASIC so we should “close that down” as nothing has been achieved with it (not the fault of the Directors) and a new constitution be lodged with the DFT as Four Wheel drive Australia Inc. The Public Officer will pursue this. (k) General discussion on the Qld Snatch strap legislation. All States to get a copy as this may be intro-duced Federally. There are no changes to the way we (safely) use snatch straps but the way they are made, branded etc. (l) ANFWDC to now meet four (4) times a year, i.e. two “face to face” and two “phone/video confer-ences” dates to be set but the Months are Feb, May, Aug and Sep. Both the May and Sep can be video/phone conferences. (m) SIO’s meetings are now yearly and held in SA due to the availability of documents etc from TCIS. (n) Discussion re a minute taker for the meetings. Qld said ‘we have a Secretary” so why is it not his/her responsibility to take ANFWDC minutes. SA added that this will be an extra cost by appointing a minute secretary to attend all meetings. Discussion is on-going. (o) Some States complained that there is very little communication between the States on day to day events. Lee said FWDSA continues to inform all States of “what is or happening in SA”. Qld said they do, so did NSW. Resolved that the other States need to communicate like SA, Qld and NSW. (p) A National trail was discussed by Qld, Scott suggested that if each State sent him “info” about the iconic trails/tracks he could possibly “link them together” so any members travelling from (say) Brisbane to Perth could deviate and use these tracks as part of their trip. (q) The ANFWDC is looking at setting up a “Facebook” section on its website. Qld and Vic have face-book sites. Russell said Vic had 1756+ hits in one week. Scott said that whilst it will be a useful tool “someone” needs to drive it and run it otherwise it will not work. Lee said SA is looking at it as well for his State. Annual General Meeting. Elections held, President Peter Fenwick (NSW), Vice President Eric Morey (WA), Secretary Rodney Clark (TAS), and Treasurer Lee Smith (SA). Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory make up the rest of the management Committee. Appointed Positions. Ian Lacey (CBT Manager), Gunther Kettniss (State Insurance Coordinator/Project Officer), Rob Kelly (Website Manager), Lee Smith (Permit Manager), George Cottee (Public Officer).

IMPORTANT NOTICE

IF YOU ARE TAKING PART IN ANY CLUB EVENTS, YOU MUST PUT YOUR

NAME ON THE TRIP SHEET TO ENSURE THAT YOU ARE COVERED BY THE

CLUB’S PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE. YOU CAN DO THIS AT A

MEETING OR BY RINGING THE CLUB TRIP CO-ORDINATOR

AFTER THE LAST CLUB MEETING BEFORE A TRIP, PLEASE INFORM THE

TRIP LEADER OF ANY ADDITIONS OR CANCELLATIONS PRIOR TO THE

COMMENCEMENT OF THE TRIP

THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION AND OURS!

Did you know that it is in the club constitution that your car must be maintained in

good roadworthy condition with a minimum of 3rd party property insurance? Do

you have a fire extinguisher with you on club trips? It’s a club rule that you carry

one. What about a first aid kit, the club has quite a good one to borrow at any time.

All we ask is that you replace anything that gets used or removed from the kit.
