PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: BS 190 is a 3-unit course

taken by third year Behavioral Sciences majors as part of their core subjects.

It is a 250-hour internship program during the summer where students are given opportunity for didactic and experiential learning in the areas of Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology.

RELEVANCE OF BS 190: FOR THE STUDENTS Students are provided with the prospect of

learning current and new best practices that contribute to their professional growth, education and competence.

They have the opportunity to attend educational discussions, seminar-workshops and other training programs relevant to their professional development in the field of Behavioral Sciences.

Students are afforded with the opportunity to explore their career interests and prospects in the future as they obtain a considerable amount of learning and expertise from their practicum field.

RELEVANCE OF BS 190: AS COMMUNITY SERVICE Through the conduct of

research, engagement in community work, design and implementation of therapeutic programs, conduct of psychological interviews and assessment, facilitating community needs assessment, etc.

OBJECTIVES OF BS 190: The practicum program serves as a

fieldwork course for students. Specifically, the following are the skills of the students intended to achieve:1. Facilitating community needs

assessment, SWOT analysis, psychological assessment and other research-related activities;

2. Developing and implementing intervention programs for the community, industry or hospital setting;

OBJECTIVES OF BS 190:3. Writing evaluation

reports for individual case profile, company/organization profile, or community profile;

4. Demonstrating the ability to promote advocacy and information campaign programs;

OBJECTIVES OF BS 190:5. Demonstrating an ability to

apply analytical and critical thinking skills to assess and provide solutions to clinical/industry/community concerns, issues and problems; and

6. Demonstrating professionalism and understanding of and commitment to professional ethics and standards of practice in the practicum field.

DEPLOYMENT AREAS: In BS 190, students have a variety of fields

and/or agency to choose from , giving them the opportunity to discover the kinds of organizational environments in which they can successfully carry out their chosen profession, establish professional networks and gain valuable pre-entry real-world work experience that can jump-start their careers.

Three fields for practicum deployment: (1) clinical setting; (2) industry/corporate field; and, (3) research/non-government organization/community setting

CLINICAL/HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP:

UP-PGH Department of Rehabilitation Medicine (in-patient and out-patient departments)

Other clinics can also serve as possible clinical deployment areas in the future: National Mental Hospital, Elsie Gaches, Marillac Homes for Girls, etc.

This may also include internship in a community health setting. This is envision to provide a wide variety of opportunities for students to participate in the health education and/or community health outreach programs.

CLINICAL/HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP: Job responsibilities in the clinical

area include:Conduct of initial psychological and

mental health assessment of patients through interviews, medical history, administration/scoring/interpretation of psychological tests, etc.;

Monitoring of patient’s compliance to medications and therapies prescribed by attending physicians and/or therapists;

CLINICAL/HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP: Job responsibilities in the clinical area

include:Conduct various forms of individual and

group intervention programs (through supervised activities) to select cases: play therapies for the pediatric patients, group therapies, care giver counseling and pain management techniques for adult patients, behavior modification techniques, etc.

Completion of psychological evaluation reports and/or progress report of each therapy session;

CLINICAL/HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP: Job responsibilities in the clinical

area include:Recording and communicating behavioral

observations of patients and/or presenting test results and recommendations to both caregivers and other clinic team members;

Collaborating with lead clinician in the interpretation of assessment findings;

Designing and implementation of information campaign and training program in a form of seminar-workshop for parents/caregivers of SpEd children in PGH-DRM.

other research projects including collecting and scoring inventories of patient’s psychological health and well-being;

Providing assistance with data entry and analysis of patients’ health information; 

Participation in additional research and didactic activities as appropriate, such as lecture-seminar, training-workshops, etc.

CLINICAL/HOSPITAL INTERNSHIP:

Students are expected to keep a journal (daily log-sheet or narrative report) analyzing each contact with the patient and/or clinical area. Journal entries should go beyond mere summarizing of the day's events to critically analyzing what took place that day, how productive it was, and what could have been done differently. Further discussion should include application of material learned in the classroom.

RESEARCH/NGO/COMMUNITY INTERNSHIP

Deployment depends on the affiliated NGO and/or community.

Community practicum seeks to provide valuable services to, and enhance, the quality of life for members of the community, as students engage with community life and/or work in the NGO.

Deployment of practicum students depends on the affiliated company/industry, such as Rockwell, ABS-CBN, Gerry’s Grill, Nestle Philippines, IBM, Smart, Unilever Philippines, etc.

INDUSTRY/CORPORATE INTERNSHIP:

Students are given a simulation of a real-world-of-work experience by going through the application process, such as hurdling the job interview, and then being offered with the “job.”

Job responsibilities include human resource management and corporate communications functions such as but not limited to:Facilitating job recruitment process such as

job posting, job fair, job interviews and assessment exams of job applicants;

Conducting SWOT analysis, benchmarking, and other research on human resource practices and job analysis;

Conducting performance evaluation of employees;

Facilitating human resource information system (e.g., organizing employee data, designing company profile brochures, office correspondence, etc.);

Analyzing impact of the organizational culture and structure, management policies and programs to both employees and other stakeholders.

DEPLOYMENT PROCESS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA USED:

The practicum committee of the DBS is convened each year to discuss details, mechanics and other issues relevant to the practicum program.

The committee also decides on the evaluation criteria used to screen students for their respective practicum sites.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FACULTY AND/OR PRACTICUM ADVISER:

Identifying and making arrangements for the practicum.

Providing the student with a site that can provide a meaningful practicum experience.

Identification of a preceptor to provide the necessary on site instruction and supervision to the student.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FACULTY AND/OR PRACTICUM ADVISER:Faculty supervision including the

following contacts for consultation with student and preceptor:On site visit to discuss goals and plans

for the student's work and/or to conduct objective observation of student’s practicum work and achievement;

Conference (by email, phone or personal) with preceptor to discuss student's progress and evaluation;

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FACULTY AND/OR PRACTICUM ADVISER:Providing the required evaluation

forms to preceptors along with the dates on which they are due to the faculty supervisors.

Assigning a student grade with input from the preceptor (however, the faculty advisor has sole discretion for assigning the final grade).

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRECEPTOR: Introduce the student to other personnel

in the agency. Plan for the increasing assumption of

responsibility by the student. By demonstration, instruction, and

evaluation, help the student develop the skills and abilities to perform the job effectively.

Provide the student with appropriate information about the clienteles of those serviced by the organization/clinic/NGO.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRECEPTOR: Provide time for regular meetings and

consultations with the student. Provide evaluations of the student on

forms supplied by the University of the Philippines.

Be available as required for consultations with university faculty concerning the progress of the student and notify promptly the university faculty member supervising the practicum of any unusual problems or difficulties.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRACTICUM STUDENT: Students are required to fulfill the

attendance requirements for the practicum as specified by the organization/NGO/clinic or company and to arrive each day on time.  In case of emergency, the student is expected to notify the preceptor and the faculty adviser of an absence, by phone, ahead of time if possible.

Students are expected to fully participate in the agreed upon activities and projects as specified in their job description in a creative and substantive manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRACTICUM STUDENT: Students are to show respect for the values,

interests, preferences and opinions of the clienteles served by the organization/NGO/clinic or company.

Students are expected to act in a professional manner and take personal responsibility for their behavior and for meeting goals of the practicum.

Students are expected to fulfill the requirements of the practicum program as agreed upon with the preceptor and/or practicum supervisor and faculty adviser.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PRACTICUM STUDENT: No student will be allowed to take a

practicum program without the necessary liability/security insurance provided by a private agency and subscribed by the University of the Philippines.

Students (esp. in the industry area) shall secure the MOA between UPM and the company.

Students are required to have individual weekly conferences with the faculty adviser on a predetermined schedule.

EVALUATION OF THE STUDENT AND THE PRACTICUM PROGRAM:

Students are evaluated based on the assessment made by the practicum supervisor/preceptor as well as the evaluation of the faculty adviser.

The program is likewise evaluated for their results and impact on the related field of study and career of the students.

EVALUATION OF THE STUDENT AND THE PRACTICUM PROGRAM:

Results of program evaluation become the basis in the re-adjustment and/or modifications in the practicum program over time to remain relevant to, and to achieve the best results for, students and practicum agencies.

Suggested pointers for evaluation of the practicum program include the following: (1) impact and benefits of the practicum program; (2) major drawbacks and limitations; and (3) implications for the future of the practicum program.
