In the afternoon, Jeannine Lewis and Barb Lehman will be sharing the Batik technique that combines the use of water color paint and melted wax on Rice Paper to create a Poinsettia Christmas Card.

Each person in attendance will be provided with two pieces of Awagami Ginwashi Rice Paper, card stock and envelope, double stick acid free tape and the selected colors of water color paint. A few 12 x 12 pieces of rice paper will be available for sale for $1.

Presidents Message

WOW! We are midway through 2019. Which means it is time to start thinking of 2020! This is my third

year as President and I am looking forward to the end of my term. I am ready to attend our gatherings as

a “Member”. We need three members to serve on the Nomination Committee, please volunteer! Once

that committee is filled, we need each of you to consider to serve as 2020 President, VP of Programs, VP

of Membership, Secretary or Treasurer? Every one of us has the knowledge to serve in any of the

In May, I attended SDP Convention with Dee DeLorenzo in Wichita,

Kansas. It was a wonderful time! Sadly, it was the last Annual

Convention for SDP. They hope to have some Regional Conventions

and a big Convention for the 50th year in three years.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend our July General Meeting. I

will be traveling to North Carolina with my husband for a Woodturning

Symposium. It is only fair that I support him since he traveled to

Daytona Beach in 2018 for SDP Convention.

Dee DeLorenzo will be leading the

meeting and I’m sure she will share

a few highlights from Convention. I am sad that I will not be able to

make Hattie’s Christmas Box ☹

Hope to see you at an upcoming meeting. Bring a friend!

SDP Annual Convention in Wichita, Kansas

Linda Kapp and Dee DeLorenzo 2019

Keeper of the Plains

The first two pictures are of the Keeper of the Plains where the Arkansas and Little

Arkansas River come together. Every night at 9pm, they light the Keeper of the Plains

with fire. Unfortunately, the night that Dee walked up to see it, the weather didn’t permit it

to be lit. The third photo is the Keeper of the Plains that was painted by people in

attendance of the convention. It will be placed at a dog park in Wichita, it is covered with

colorful puppy dogs.

Over 200 painted backpacks were donated to St Francis Ministries in Wichita during the Chapters

Gathering of the 2019 SDP Convention.

Thanks to Jeannine for painting the cake platter. Also, Bobbi Brady painted the kisses brown, then Dee, Barb and I added to

the kisses to create character. The ladies at the table during the banquet, seemed to appreciate the decorations and the

chocolate.

MEMORY BOX Program The Memory Box Artist Program Inc., began in June of

1998. The memory boxes are either painted or decorated

then given to a family who has suffered the loss of a

newborn. The boxes can be filled with mementos of the

lost child, i.e. footprints, lock of hair, etc. You can view

additional information at www.memoryboxes.org.

Penns Woods Painters has participated in this program

for numerous years. We take one day a year to paint

memory boxes as a group. Throughout the year

members paint boxes at their leisure to be donated to the

program. The majority of the boxes are donated to the

local Pinnacle Health Organization.

Our current inventory, 39 unpainted boxes and 46 painted boxes. We recently

received a request from Pinnacle Health for larger boxes, they are stocked up

on the small boxes. My ask for the remainder of this year is to paint either a

medium or large sized box since our on inventory of large boxes is just about

depleted.
