BRU/kje January 2019 Dear Parent/Carer Y10 Academy Day – Thursday 7 th March 2019 Two times a year the normal student timetable is suspended for the day and we offer students an alternative array of exciting, enriching and rewarding experiences: enhancing the curriculum, building the cultural capital of students and further developing their interpersonal skills that will underscore their successful development to adulthood. These days are referred to as Academy Days and are proudly one of the highlights of the school calendar. Students who have achieved the appropriate Four Star Standard will have the opportunity to go on a trip. A range of trips are provided, with some requiring payment. All payment must be made on ParentPay. The second Academy Day of this academic year will be on Thursday 7 th March 2019. For fee-paying trips, booking opens on ParentPay on the following days, according to a students’ Four Star Standard award from the previous half term. Four Star Standard – Friday 18 th January Three Star Standard – Tuesday 22 nd January Two Star Standard – Friday 25 th January If students select a trip that involves public transport, they can be dismissed from East Croydon Train Station at the end of the day. On each trip, they can also travel back to the Academy with staff if they wish. If you wish your child to be bought back to the Academy, please write a note in your son/daughter’s planner. For experiences that take place outside of the Academy, students will need to bring their own packed lunch. Students who are eligible for a Free School Meal will be provided with a meal. The choices for Year 10 students will be as follows: 1) Harry Potter Studio Tour, £31.92 Students will walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter and explore the wonders of the wizarding world. They will get to visit the real life sets of one of the most successful book and film series of all time: from magical spells to magical creatures, from dark villains to daring heroes. We will be travelling by coach to the Warner Brother Studios for an exciting day. See http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/ for more information.

2) Water Adventure Day, Lee Valley Olympic Water Centre, £32.00 Venue for the 2012 London Olympic Games, students will travel by mini-bus for a jam-packed day at the Lee Valley Water Centre. They will take part in a kayaking session and tackle their water wipe out adventure course. Students will travel to the Centre by mini-bus. Students on this trip will need to be confident and comfortable swimming in order to take part. 3) School of Rock The Musical, Central London, £25.00 Based upon the iconic, hit film, School of Rock is an exciting new musical that follows a failed rock star who decides to earn a living by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious school. We will be attending a matinee performance and will travel by train to Central London to see one of the most talked about new shows in the West End. 4) Cadbury World, Birmingham, £28.70 Cadbury World is an immersive exhibition tour on the design, manufacturing and advertising of one of the world’s most famous and historic chocolate brands. Students will explore over 10 different zones which tell the story of chocolate and the Cadbury business. We will travel to Cadbury World by coach.

5) The London Dungeon, Central London, £12.95 The London Dungeon is a uniquely thrilling attraction in Central London, where students will be whisked back to the capital’s most perilous past, involving 19 live shows and 2 thrilling rides. We will travel to Central London by public transport. 6) The View from The Shard, Central London, £9.95 Students will get the opportunity to visit the top of the tallest building in the UK, witnessing the stunning views of London from the top of one of the capital’s most famous landmarks. We will travel to Central London by public transport. 7) Nelson Mandela Exhibition, Central London, £8.00 This new global touring exhibition will take students on a personal journey through the life of the world’s most iconic freedom fighters and political leaders. This exhibition will provide students with an insight into the people, places and events that formed his character and the challenges he faced. We will travel to the exhibition in Central London by public transport. 8) Chislehurst Caves, Bromley, £4.00 The Chislehurst Caves are a series of intersecting man-made tunnels and caverns covering 22 miles, dating from the Druid, Roman and Saxon times. Students will get to explore the history behind this unique site on their trip. We will travel to the caves by public transport.

9) Natural History Museum, Central London, Free Students will get to explore the vast and unique range of specimens when visiting The Natural History Museum’s unrivalled collection. The museum is home to life and earth science specimens across 80 million items, from botany to mineralogy, palaeontology to zoology. Students will travel to the Centre by public transport. 10) Ice Skating, Streatham, £5.55 Students will enjoy the freedom of skating around the Olympic sized ice rink at Streatham, the only one in London. Students will travel to Streatham by public transport. 11) Kensington Palace, Central London, Free Set in Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace is a historic royal abode and the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. A residence of the British Royal Family since the 17th century, students will be able to explore the historic State Rooms and gardens which showcase highlights of the Royal Collection.
