The Team From our arri- val at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan, competition progressed quickly; the team attached the body, bled any remaining air our of the brakes, and wrapped up the last details on the car. At technical inspection, the judges did not accept our removable steering column mount, as they had in previous years, and thus our cockpit opening did not meet the minimum size requirements. We spent the af- ternoon addressing the problem, and on the second day passed that portion of technical in- spection. The static events on the first two days of competition went well. Jay Young (‘14), Graham Keeth (‘16), and Christine Herrmann (‘16) represented the team at the business presentation. The five drivers successfully passed egress, and the team presented at both the cost event and design presentation. On the third day of competition, the car successfully passed the tilt test, and we moved on to the noise test. We were unable to resolve an engine problem despite our best efforts, and thus could not pass the noise test and move on to the dynamic events. After competition, the problem was isolated to the car’s custom oil system and subsequently fixed. Competition was the culmination of the team’s hard work, dedication, and perseverance over the course of the year, and while we were disappointed with our overall finish, the engine problem provided an excellent learning opportunity for new members. Throughout the past year, the team became a stronger and more tight-knit group, and at competition, we worked together effectively under the leadership of the 2014 Captains Colden Eldridge, Jeanette Miranda, and Stephen Weinreich. The competition afforded the team members the opportunity to talk with other teams and gain inspiration for future designs. Overall, this year’s competition was a tremendous experience and left everyone excited for the coming year. We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who supported us at competition. The Brown Formula SAE Team is dedicated to constant growth and improvement. The 2015 season is well underway with designing, tuning, experimenting, and building, as well as recruitment of new members and community outreach. This year’s Co-Captains are Sam Friedman (‘15) and Tori Lee (‘15), both of whom have been on the team since their freshman years and have significant experience. Sam is incredibly knowledgeable and persistent—no problem is ever too hard for him, and he nev-er loses his good-natured optimism. Tori has never been spotted in the shop without a beaming smile on her face, and her enthusi-asm for the team is boundless. One of the major focuses of the 2015 season is improving the team’s project management skills. The team was graciously of-fered a sponsorship by Smartsheet scheduling software to manage subsystems and team deadlines. We are committed to instituting more frequent, intermediate milestones and have been developing our project timeline for the successful completion of the car be-fore competition.

Another major focus of the 2015 year has been design. Many members were given the opportunity to be design leads and have met the challenge with enthusiasm and diligence. In particular, Philip (‘17) and Nick (‘17) have been concentrating heavily upon using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) to design the aerody-namics package this year, Messhia (‘16) and Jaekyung (‘17) have taken an innovative and creative approach to redesigning the fuel system, and Grant (‘17) and Isaku (‘17) have focused upon im-proving the manufacturability of the pedalbox and steering system respectively. The team is pleased to have moved forward with our design changes and is now building our way to a new car.

The 2015 Season

Outreach This winter, the School of Engineering hosted their Annual Engi-neering Day for prospective students. Graham and Christine led the Brown Formula SAE tour stop, and Isaku was a student pan-elist and tour guide. With over 200 students in attendance, the event was an excellent way to showcase the team and get a head start on recruiting! In February, the team volunteered at BRYTE (Brown Refugee Youth Tutoring and Enrichment) Science Day, a day for children of refugee families to explore different fields in Science and Engineering. We will also be engaging with accepted students as a part of the division of engineering during the ADOCH (A Day on College Hill) prospective students day.

This year, the team has been involved with a number of on and off-campus community outreach events. This past summer, Isaku and Sam hosted an educational work-shop on car design/assembly for the Spira Engineering Camp, a summer program from underprivileged girls en-tering grade 10, who are interested in STEM fields. In October, the team brought the car to the Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire, a unique gathering of innovative exhibits and inspiring displays. The exhibits at the faire demonstrated a passion for designing and building; we were very fortunate to have been a part of such an excit-ing event with the local community! Also in October, high school seniors from BEAST (Brown Engineering After School Team) visited our Tockwotton shop, and Graham, James, and Tori provided their insights into engineering and their experiences on the team. The visit-ing students were extremely excited about the wide varie-ty of applications and pathways that an engineering career can lead to. We are looking forward to continuing to be involved with the community throughout the course of the year!

Thank you! Our sincerest thank you goes out to the team’s wonderful sponsors and donors. Your support is invaluable and critical to the success of Brown FSAE. Through the early morn-ings, the late nights, the triumphs, the perseverance, the times of laughter, and the times of focus, the team grows closer and the car progresses, culminating in the exhilarating five days of competition. We are thankful for all of the resources you provide and the support you show every step of the way Thank you to the Brown FSAE alumni, who continue to give us second opinions on design and share funny stories from the past, and thank you as always to our friends and family who support the team with love and encouragement. Finally, a special thank you to Chris Bull, our team’s phenomenal faculty advisor. He is an indispensable member of this team. Thank you for your support, Chris!

The 2014 season was a time of great growth, learning, and leadership. The team sends a heartfelt thank you to our 2014 Co-Captains, Colden, Jeanette, and Stephen, whose hard work and dedication will always be remembered. Congratulations to the team’s seniors who graduated in May following competition! Jeanette is working as an avionics engi-neer at SpaceX, Stephen is pursuing his PhD in electrical engi-neering at Stanford, concentrating in circuit design, Colden is working at Euro-Pro, and Jay is pursuing his PhD in mechanical engineering at Cornell, concentrating in fluids. We would also like to congratulate Max Gottesman (‘13) for earning his masters degree in electrical engineering from the Brown School of Engi-neering. The team wishes each of them the best of luck with their future endeavors. All of our graduates have continued to be in close contact with the team this year and have been extremely helpful by passing on valuable expertise and knowledge of the car. This season, a strong cohort of second-year students have tak-en on subsystem design work: Grant Menon on Pedalbox, Mat-thew Shorter (‘17) on Cooling, Rohil Bahnsali (‘17) and Kyle La-racey (‘17) on Shifting, Kelsey Sandquist (‘17) on Brakes, Isaku Kamada on Steering, Brett Sherman (‘17) on Body, and Nick McGurk and Philip Mathieu on Aerodynamics. Some second-year students have teamed up with upperclassmen to approach their design work: Messhia Young and Jaekyung Song on Fuel and Graham Keeth and Rachel Murai (‘17) on Electronics. Final-

ly, the upperclassmen members designed the re-maining subsystems: Christine Herrmann on Oil, Bren-nan MacInnes on Chassis, James Dilling (‘16) on Drivetrain, Sam Friedman on Suspension, and Tori Lee on Powertrain. Eve-ry design lead has made great progress in their respective subsys-tems through months of hard work. This year, the team continues to be very diverse, including concentrators in fields spanning Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, Biology, and Industrial Design. Our team is a tight-knit group of individuals with shared interests and a well-defined mission, who enjoy working with each other and for each other. We couldn’t ask for a better team!
