Several weeks ago we had a memorable celebration of dual milestones for Brown Row-ing: the 40th Anniversary of Women’s Crew at Brown and the 30th Anniversary of John Murphy’s service as head coach of the program. Sayles Hall was transformed for the evening, with a crew racing shell hanging from the ceiling, seven massive national championship banners lining the walls, and even Brown President Christina Paxson greeting the more than 250 guests as they arrived.
The evening was a great tribute to John Murphy P’11, and to his wife and assistant coach Phoebe Murphy ’82, P’11. Director of Athletics Jack Hayes, Head Men’s Coach Paul Cooke ’89, and the co-captains of the women’s team gave heartfelt remarks about the impact of the Murphys on the championship program. The relentlessly-humble John Murphy surprised (and shocked) all when he took the podium to address the group. Co-captain Whitney Naylor ’15 led the team, and the entire audience, in a rousing rendition of the infamous women’s crew cheer. Marcia Hooper ’77, P’09, P’11 received a standing ovation and the coveted Misha Joukowsky Award for her decades of work in support of women’s crew. Kathryn Quadracci Flores ’90, along with Marcia and other Brown Rowing Stewards, announced a $500,000 lead gift to endow the Head Coaching Chair for Women’s Crew and told the many alumni, parents and friends in attendance of the plans for a fundraising initiative for Brown Crew, which will include a complete renovation of Mar-ston Boathouse.
So many of you came out for the fall celebration of Brown’s 250th Anniversary, centered around the Brown-Harvard Football night game. Although Brown Football lost a hard-fought battle, the entire week-end was a success, capped off by a spectacular fireworks show over Brown Stadium following the game. It was great to have so many alumni, parents and friends --- and so many students --- fill the stands and cheer on the Bears.
Many, many thanks to all of you for helping the Sports Foundation reach its fundraising goals last year. We ended the fiscal year on June 30th with record-breaking donor counts and great excitement for the future of Brown Athletics. Thank you for your continued and generous support of the outstanding women and men who compete for Brown. I hope to see you in the stands soon, but until then, I remain,
Ever True,
From Executive Director: Davies Bisset ’85

Jump Shots - Brown Reader: 50 Writers Remember College Hill
I remember the exact moment when I first realized that basketball was no longer the simple game I had played as a
kid. It was February of 1968. We had just been annihilated by Princeton, then one of the country’s top college teams. The five-hour bus ride back to Providence seemed as bleak as nuclear winter. While the bus crept along through the dreary New Jersey meadows, I leaned against a window, feigning sleep. All around me in the darkened bus were teammates slumped in their seats. The air smelled like failure. If we had had any illusions about ourselves as a team, this drubbing had shattered them. As it had shattered any illusions I had about myself as an athlete. The game had been a defining moment, the night I first came face-to-face with my athletic mortality, the painful realization that I wasn’t as good as I wanted to be and never would be. What was I going to do with this realization?
I didn’t have a clue. For I had been brought up to believe in the most American of convictions: that if you worked hard enough, desired something enough, sacrificed enough, your dreams could come true. I had grown up surrounded by inspirational clichés and simplistic slogans that began seducing me at an early age. These slogans were deeply embedded in the culture, forever hanging from locker room walls, essentially unquestioned, unchallenged. So I sat by the window, running the past through my mind as if it were some newsreel, my despair increasing with each passing mile. Eventually, as if I had crossed some emotional fault line, the despair turned to disgust. Basketball had always been more than just a game to me. It had been a way of life. It had determined who my friends were, where I went to school, what I studied once I got there. For nearly a decade there hadn’t been a day when I didn’t think about it. Without it, I certainly wouldn’t have been at Brown. Without it, my life undoubtedly would have been very different. Now I suddenly wondered what it had all been for. I had arrived at Brown with no confidence in myself as a student, and for four years, I had consistently taken the easiest courses I could find. Now I was a college senior, two courses short of graduating with my class that spring, without any idea of what I wanted to do in the future. It was 1968, three-quarters of the way through one of the most turbulent decades in American history, when it often seemed as if the country was undergoing a national nervous breakdown. It also was a time of dizzying social change, of the civil rights movement, the antiwar movement, the rise of the counterculture. Cultural tremors were shaking our society, growing into shock waves that would change it forever. Here it was—going on all around me—and I knew too little about it. Why? Why didn’t I know anything about politics or theater? About history, literature, or art? Why, in the past decade, had I only read a handful of books outside of school, when I had been a voracious reader as a kid? Why was my life so one-dimensional? Why was my life both defined and shaped by a childhood obsession with a game? My life was a mélange of empty gyms and taped ankles, pregame pep talks, echoes of muted cheers. My life revolved around whether my jump shot went in or not. Was there life after basketball? At twenty-two, on a cold night in the winter of 1968, sitting on that bus and watching the future

BROWN 250TH - BILL REYNOLDS
unfold ahead of me, headlights illuminating patches of the darkened highway, I wasn’t sure.
* * * Twelve years later, I often found myself on the third floor of the Rockefeller Library at Brown, always in a small carrel by a window that overlooked downtown Providence. I was trying to eke out a living as a freelance writer at the time, which—in the real world—was a euphemism for being unemployed. After returning from six months of active duty in the army, I had taught high school English for three years. I had quit the teaching job to write a novel about a teacher with nothing to say, in front of a class that didn’t want to hear anything anyway. But now that novel was in some drawer somewhere, right along with the rejection slips. My new project was a memoir about my basketball journey, which would eventually become the book Glory Days. It would begin with that night on the bus coming home from Princeton. Every morning I would sit in the library, wallowing in the irony of it. Could you make up the fact that I was now spending more time in the library than I ever did in my time as a Brown student? Did I wish I could go back and do my college years over, get up every morning with my notebooks and my sharpened pencils, then come back and study deep into the night, like a scene from some sepia-toned movie? No doubt. I was haunted by sketchy memories like this one: I was in a study group for a course I was taking—it was either “The Philosophy of Literature” or “The Literature of Philosophy,” but to this day I’m not sure which, because I rarely went. I was a senior at the time, and there was a peace rally on the green every Wednesday; my student deferment was about to run out, and everything was as up in the air as a long jump shot. So there I was, at a study session one night, trying to play catch-up before the next exam. I had listened to all the talk, trying to absorb it, until one guy said, “I guess that does it. It should be no sweat.” “Wait,” I said, flipping through my notebook. “There’s one
more. It’s in my notes. Yeah, here it is. Doctor Zay-goon.” There was a silence. “It’s right here,” I said. “Doctor Zay-goon. Or something like that.” More silence. “You don’t mean Darkness at Noon, do you?” another kid asked. Oh. But I’ve come to realize that Brown taught me things I didn’t know I was learning. At the most obvious level, it put me around highly intelligent, motivated people, and they did what good teammates always do: they pushed me up, opened up my world in ways that would once have been unimaginable. Could any college student ask for more, regardless of his grade point average? Brown also taught me a certain confidence that I’d never had before. Never again would I be intimidated around academic people, never again would I be impressed with pretensions. That, in many ways, was Brown’s gift to me. It was not an insignificant one. After I’d freelanced at the Providence Journal for seven years, they finally offered me a job as a reporter. At the time, I didn’t want to write about sports. It was the early eighties; I had evolved and was ready to accept the possibility that there was life after basketball. I was covering town council meetings that would make my eyes glaze over. Then one day a sportswriting job opened up at the paper. “Why would anyone give up being a reporter to be a sportswriter?” asked the top editor. “Because the worst game in the world is better than the best town council meeting that ever was,” I said. The editor shook his head in disgust and walked away. That was thirty years ago. But even though I’ve been writing professionally for over thirty years now, and have written twelve books, I still consider myself a basketball player first and a writer second. Having played basketball at the level I played at is still the thing I take the most pride in. Shooting a basketball is still the thing I did the best. I know this is foolish. But it’s never changed. And there are still days when I find myself in some pickup basketball game somewhere, when reality gets distorted and I am still young and strong, off in my own world, oblivious to everything else around me. And on those rare occasions, which come like gifts from some benevolent god, the only thing I care about is my jump shot.

THANK YOU PETER BROWN!
After 13 years and 28 individual Ivy League Champions, Peter Brown retired as the head coach of Brown Swimming and Diving
Peter Brown Left a Lasting Legacy for Brown Swim/Dive
The Barr household is bumming big-time. Without question, we are all very saddened by your news. Each of us so enjoyed having you as coach of the Brown swim team, and in that position, we always held you in such high esteem.
I remember Brian sharing the following comments with me and Billy during his freshman year, “I’m so excited about things. He’s a great coach for many reasons, but one reason that affects me in a positive way is that I feel he really is cheering for me and wanting to get the best out of me. I’ve always gone in the water and wanted to do well for myself, to make me happy or satisfy my own expectations ... but now I find myself diving in and thinking about him. I want to swim well for my own sake, but I also want to swim well for Pete, to make HIM proud and not let HIM down. I never had that before. He’s the first coach that has made me feel like he really cared ... both about my performance AND about me. Yeah, I feel like Pete cares.”
In our minds, that’s what coaching is all about: caring and bringing out the best in your athletes. In our minds, that’s a WINNING coach’s approach to a sport. We therefore believe you have been a top-notch coach in every way. Thanks for making winners out of all of us.
Know that we have been and always will be supportive of you, and we are incredibly grateful for having had the opportunity to benefit from your influence in our lives.
At the same time, we are thankful for having had the good fortune of becoming friends. If we must sadly accept losing you as a coach, we take comfort in knowing we will always have you as a friend.
We wish you the best and very much hope to see you ‘round. Thanks for everything, Pete. You will be sorely missed.
Hugs-ClaudiaThank you to Brian Barr ’15 and the Barr family for
contributing to the Brown Bear Magazine.
A message to Peter Brown from Claudia Barr ’86, P’15, whose son Brian currently competes for Brown in freestyle and butterfly. Claudia was gracious enough to share this personal exchange.

Within an hour of my unofficial visit to Brown I knew I had found my school and my team. I was immediately drawn to the friendly community of
student-athletes that welcomed me in even though I was just a high schooler. The high level of academics that the Ivy League institution provided were unparalleled and allowed me to find my own academic passions through the open curriculum. Further, I would be able to play a division one sport while also being able to pursue my other interests. The fact that my home was a five minute walk was merely an afterthought.
I came into preseason freshman year knowing I was good - I had been recruited after all. But what playing at Brown would end up teaching me is that knowing you are good is extremely different from proving that you are good and deserve to be on that field when the whistle blows to start the game. I worked hard my freshman year, and luckily started all but one game. But come the off season, I had a very rude awakening. What I did not know was that the off season was not a time to get in shape, it was a time to get into better shape. So I got my butt kicked in every conditioning and weight room session, and it was miserable. This experience taught me how to work hard. Going into my sophomore year, I didn’t want to relive this. Instead, I wanted to work so hard that everything that came my way, no matter how daunting, would be easy. Playing a sport at Brown has taught me true work ethic and mental toughness, and these two skills have forever changed me. Playing field hockey in college went beyond just providing me the joy of beating an opponent on the field, but also gave me the skills that I would need to be successful in school and in life off of the field.
Going to Brown did not just give me the opportunity to play a Division I sport. What is so unique about Brown, and one of the reasons I chose it, is that I have been able to experience so many other aspects of the University while also being committed to my team. I have taken this opportunity during my time at Brown to get involved with other student groups and take part in activities that allow me to pursue my interests away from field hockey. For example, I was able to study abroad my junior year. This is something I would not have necessarily been able to do if I was playing field hockey at a different university. Although studying abroad meant taking time away from my team and my sport, the experiences I had, people I met, and the incredible knowledge I attained while living in another country and culture were irreplaceable.
Now back at Brown in my senior season, having learned and experienced so much, my goal is to play with everything I have. I want to leave it all on the field because every day is a last chance to prove to myself and my teammates my passion and dedication for the sport and for Brown. I want to play with all my heart so that on that true last game, November 8th, I know I can walk off of the field without any regrets.
“Liza’s innate determination has helped her develop into one of our most versatile players. She is also an introspective player who’s thoughtful approach to challenges has not only elevated her own play but also offers our team a unique perspective when problem solving. Liza is a well-rounded student athlete; last spring she studied in Italy and traveled throughout Europe. Her experiences home and abroad have helped shape her into a mature and confident young woman as she prepares for her senior season.”- Head Coach Jill Reeve

3:00, 6:00, 9:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00—those numbers embody so much more than simple multiples of three to any Brown Men’s Soccer player. A long-lived
tradition in our team is that in order to play on the field you must run three miles in 18 minutes.
Since I have been at Brown the question has always come up, “Should we keep the Three Mile?” It is true that on occasions we have had great players sidelined and forced to run it five or six times over the course of the first month of preseason solely to be eligible to play. A common fitness test amongst many successful collegiate programs is two miles in 12 minutes, so what makes that extra mile so necessary for our program?
My freshman year during our first team meeting Coach Laughlin mentioned that as members of Brown Men’s Soccer we must consider ourselves “Custodians of the Program.” We have four years to take care of the program as a custodian would take care of the building in which he resides. Like the custodian we have a duty to maintain the strong foundation of the program to allow it to continue to provide for others that which it has provided for us: the ability to mature, develop, and expand upon our pursuits. We must take advantage of everything the program has to offer without taking it for granted, specifically the ability to pursue an unparalleled education while competing athletically on a national stage. And finally, once our time has come, we must hang up our cleats for the upcoming custodians have their own duty to provide guidance and keep the program running for the future players.
The “Three Mile” is not just a testament to your fitness and your preparation for the season; it is a link that brings together the custodians of past, present, and future. The day before “The Three Mile,” when nerves are highest amongst the team, our phones overflow with words of support from past alumni. Even when Doug Ulman ’99, current CEO of Livestrong and former Brown Men’s Soccer athlete, came to speak at Brown this past spring, his first question to those who spoke with him afterwards was if we still ran “that test.”
As I enter my senior year and ponder my collegiate athletic career, I realize that it is more important to consider the state we leave the program for others rather than the legacy of awards that we garner as individuals or as a team. Although the two often come
in pairs, it is important to make a distinction between a winning team and a successful program. We must strive for a successful season, an Ivy League Championship, an NCAA tournament run and championship. However, with the crucial wins must also come the development and maturity of our fellow teammates and the passing down of what it truly really means to be a part of BMS—the willingness of 26 men to push each other through the pain of that extra mile.

Women’s Crew Continues To Set The BenchmarkThe Bears won bronze at the NCAA Championships this spring. In its best finish since winning the NCAA Championship in 2011, Brown women’s crew captured third place at the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships in June on the strength of a silver medal finish by the varsity eight. The Bears were edged by back-to-back national champions Ohio State and California. The third-place finish at the NCAA Championship capped off another incredible year highlighted by the Ivy League team trophy and four individual All-Americans: Louise Breen ’14 (First Team), Murial Solberg ’16 (First Team), Rachel Gottlieb ’15 (Second Team), and Molly Sandza ’15 (Second Team). Four Brown rowers were selected to compete at the 2014 World Rowing U23 Championships in Varese Italy in July: Emma Betuel ’16 (USA), Coco Schoeller ’15 (USA), and freshmen Alia Shafi ’17 (USA), and Monika Sobieszek ’17 (Poland).
Brown has been the gold standard for rowing, especially in the Ivy League, since the inception of the NCAA Championship in 1997. Brown has won a record seven NCAA Championships and has finished in the top three in 14 of the 18 NCAA Championships. Brown Bear Magazine 13MEN’S CREW PUTS IT ALL TOGETHER
Following challenging races in the dual season which saw the Bears fall to Washington, Harvard, Yale and Princeton, Brown Men’s Crew rallied down the final stretch to record tremendous results in the season’s most important races, including a second place finish at the IRA National Championship and a third place result at the Eastern Sprints. Brown also continued a long and storied tradition of representing the Uni-versity at the Henley Royal Regatta, the world’s most renowned racing venue held on the River Thames in London, England.
Men’s Crew 2014 Highlights
• Won silver in Varsity Eight and won gold in the Freshmen and Third Varsity at the Eastern Sprints, tying for the team title for the second straight year.
• Extended Varsity Eight’s streak of making the grand finals at the Eastern Sprints to 10 years (the only team to do so).
• Won four medals at the IRA Championship, with the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four winning silver and the Freshmen and Third Varsity winning bronze.
• Placed all five crews in the Grand Final at the IRA Championship (only two other programs ac-complished this).
• Reached the Semi-Final and Final in the Ladies Challenge Plate and the Temple Challenge Cup, respectively, at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Approximately 80 teammates, fraternity brothers, classmates and fellow alums gathered in Houston to celebrate, attend and show support to Bill O’Brien ’92 as he led the Houston Texans to victory in his first game as an NFL head coach. In a testament to the camaraderie of team sports at Brown, ten varsity sports were represented.
Loved by many (especially opponents and offensive lineman that found him easy to block) for his ability to command a room, we came together to celebrate his professional success and to reconnect the many relationships formed and forged on the OMAC practice fields, the halls of Delta Tau Delta and The Ratty over twenty years ago.
Mickey Kwiatkowski first hired him at Brown after his playing days ended (rumor has it for $5,000 per year) as Coach K recognized the unique ability OB has connecting with people. On that coaching staff was Jim Bernhardt. Coach Bernhardt was also instrumental in furthering OB’s career and was his first hire at Penn State and currently serves with him in Houston.
In organizing the event, we built upon the success of the 2012 reunion organized by Scott Camp ’93 and Meredith Chimerine Camp ’92 for OB’s first game at Penn State where thirty-five alums attended. Of course many were drawn by the allure of the Oil Patch, the Great State of Texas, Friday Night Lights and the ancestral home of Brown Football greats Rich Willis ’90, Brad Curtis ‘92 and Rich Garza ’94 (among many, many others). We also had the drawing power of weekend selfie opportunities with former all-Ivy football performers including David Slates ’91 and Mike Geroux ’91 and wrestling legend Joe Mocco ’93.
Our weekend activities concluded at the post-game party at David Cromack’s ’92 Houston home. Using his mantra of WWZD (What Would Zucconi Do), BUSF henchman and evening emcee Matt Letendre sent letterman/letterwoman/letterperson sweaters for the Sunday night festivities.
Special thanks to David Jarusinski ’93 for diligently working with the Texans to accommodate over one hundred game tickets for the group and to David Cromack for hosting the postgame catered party.

College volleyball is unlike any other experience. My teammates are not just my friends, but at times my therapists, my
mentors, and my sisters. We spend hours upon end together, and even if we don’t have that much in common, we share our dedication to our sport, our school, and our team. We recognize the friendship, but we also recognize the desire to beat—no, kill—each other during practices because that’s what it takes to make the team better. It’s a line between wanting to be the player out there winning the points, and realizing that you may not be that player in the interest of the team. It’s about cheering on your teammates, even if they play over you, because they are in a position to help the team win. But, it’s also about realizing that every player, no matter how often she plays, contributes to every win or loss and is there because she truly loves playing.
I’ve played volleyball competitively for 12 years. That’s more than half of my life devoted to a court that measures 30 feet by 30 feet. There have been times when I’ve questioned my sanity: after throwing myself in the path of a ball that could concuss me, after collecting bruises the way other people collect stamps, after telling my friends, “sorry, I have practice” one too many times. But with the end of my career looming ahead, I realize that I never would have given up any of it. I love volleyball, simple as that. I’ve been fortunate to be able to play as long as I have, and my love for volleyball and what I’ve learned from the sport—discipline, maturity, purpose—will last far beyond the end of my senior season.
“Maryl is a leader by example. She showed maturity since the start of her freshmen year and has improved her skill tremendously. Maryl deserves a lot of credit for her work ethic and her ability to listen and change technical behaviors. I believe that she will be a success in whatever she decides to do after college. I have a high respect for her as a person and as a player.”- Head Coach Diane Short P’10

CUBS TO BEARS
For the Brown men’s water polo team, several principal challenges and goals define our season. The first test is preseason—a grueling “hell week” full of swimming, treading, lifting, drills, and scrimmages. Next, the regular season begins and the team is tested every weekend with competitive matches in tournaments and league games. As October winds down we
prepare for Northerns, the divisional playoff. Finally, the team is faced with its ultimate challenge during Easterns, the league championship whose winner earns a bid to the NCAA tournament. While winning Easterns is the defining goal for the team, that mission begins months before, when, during preseason, the collective personality and strength of the team is developed.
I still remember my first day of being a Brown athlete, day one of preseason my freshman year. That morning I nervously trekked around the OMAC to “the bubble,” the temporary pool that would serve as the team’s home for one more year. As I walked the stairs to the pool deck I was greeted by a humid blast of choking chlorine air and the imposing stares of both our coaches. Once the entire team had arrived, our 2011 captain, Toby Espinosa, gathered the squad together. He told us that although it was going to be a brutal few weeks, we would get through and be a better team because of it. Furthermore, Toby stressed that we would battle together—holding each other accountable for hard work and focus along the way—which would make us stronger and more cohesive for savoring the season’s opportunities and persevering through it’s challenges. Several minutes later, we hopped in the water and preseason (and my college athletic career) had begun.
Toby’s message still resonates with me today as my senior year preseason is in full swing and tournaments and big games loom on the near horizon. It was an honor to gather the guys together in the locker room before our first practice (nope, we don’t miss the bubble) and—together with the other two seniors Nick Deaver and Andrew Brown—impart to them our preseason words of wisdom. We told them to savor every moment together as a team, from the thrill of a big W to the sour taste of a hard-fought defeat—because it all truly does fly by. Most of all, we told them that we as a team would persevere through preseason and succeed in this season together, holding each other accountable for hard work and focus along the way. These two sentiments—both savoring each opportunity to get in the pool and play, and playing and training with accountability for the good of the team—are two lessons learned from Brown athletics that I find especially gratifying. As classes graduate, coaches change, and games are won and lost, these two lessons always endure. I desperately hope that we can finish the season strong and bring home an Easterns title (and represent Brown at NCAAs) this fall. More importantly, I know that the team will battle together, holding each other accountable to do everything that we can to make that goal a reality, and savoring the opportunity to do so.
Lessons Learned at the Pool
“In 20 years of coaching it is hard for me to identify a better example of what I look for in one of my student-athletes than Henry Fox. He is an excellent leader, teammate, and more importantly, an unselfish person. Henry cares about everything and makes an effort to be a role model to the younger members of the team.”

Athletics Unveils Throwback Jerseys for Brown’s 250th
Six programs will have the honor to wear the throwback jerseys this year.
To commemorate Brown University’s year-long 250th Anniversary celebration, Brown Athletics unveiled six throwback uniforms that will be worn in the 2014-15 season. Football opened the vintage season with the throwback jerseys on their backs for the night game against Harvard in front of over 13,000 fans on September 27th.
The vintage uniforms will be also donned by Brown’s field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and softball teams, and will be worn for one home game each during their respective seasons.
“We are excited to participate in this great celebration by wearing uniforms from past eras,” said Director of Athletics Jack Hayes. “It is a special way to honor the rich history of Brown University and its athletics program. The games for which these uniforms will be worn will be fun events for the Brown community to enjoy. I know our student-athletes are looking forward to wearing them.”
Football was designed in honor of the famed 1976 Ivy Champions, Brown’s first in football, and is highlighted by the red and white stripes on the shoulders. The other five programs feature a gothic font across the front with color schemes and stripes similar to uniforms of the past, but with no exact model.
Corbin Booker ’15 and Janet Leung ’16 model the throwback jerseys for men’s lacrosse and softball in front of Indomitable on the Ittleson Quadrangle.

Brown’s 1964 Ivy home game programs featured colorful history-themed covers by Frank Lanning and football history reviews by John “Jay” Barry Jr. ’52.
Fifty years ago Brown celebrated another birthday, its 200th. Festivities began in Sayles Hall on March 2nd, 1964 with the raising of the Bicentennial flag, sewn by Pembroker Shirley Morrison ‘64. The date coincided with the day in 1764 when the “Act for the Establishment of College or University within this colony” was passed. The 1964-65 academic year opened with convocations. A three day celebration included President Lyn-don B. Johnson’s address before 4,700 in Meehan Auditorium (Meehan lived up to its multipurpose function), who had to
cool their heels while the presidential motorcade slowly made its way to College Hill in this election season. Across the country, Brown Clubs held celebrations. The huge Kodiak bear in Faunce House was trucked to Boston for the Boston Brown Club’s May celebration.
This was a period of rapid physical growth at Brown, supported by the Bicentennial Development Program which had raised $57 million since 1957. Both the Rockefeller Library and Barus and Holley were dedicated during the celebration year. The spate of new buildings gave rise to speculation about a second campus, and President Keeney appointed a committee to study the situa-tion. A lack of space and the need to educate increasing numbers of college-age students were the major factors in considering a Bristol campus on the Haffenreffer property. Brown admissions were inundated with 5,200 applications for a freshman class of 625. It was also a period of growing unrest on college cam-puses in the wake of Freedom Summer in Mississippi. Seeking more personal freedom, Brown students were also challenging parietal rules while becoming more restive about the country’s growing involvement in Vietnam.
For Brown Athletics it was the start of a new era, with some teams appearing on television, and the hiring of Richard “Dick” Theibert as Athletic Director. An Amherst graduate, the youth-ful Theibert was the first non-Brown connected Director. He came from Chapman College in California with a reputation as a creative idea man. Theibert was tasked with helping Brown improve its tenuous footing in the still-young Ivy League, pri-marily through the creation of new facilities at Aldrich-Dexter Field. One of his major interests was the emerging area of ar-tificial playing surfaces, and he quickly proposed maximizing Meehan’s use by installing an artificial surface for indoor ten-nis. In addition, Theibert proposed moving varsity basketball games to Meehan. Neither proposal met with success. The new AD also had to deal with an ongoing feud between the NCAA and AAU. Theibert enabled Brown to take the lead on this issue, while helping the Ivy League develop a policy which defined it-

self as “an autonomous body” which would not hold exclusive allegiance to either organization, while stressing that its athletes must remain true amateurs when competing in AAU or NCAA sponsored events.
In support of Brown’s year-long celebration, Dick Theibert brought the NCAA hockey and soccer championships to cam-pus. He also secured the outdoor track Heptagonal Games for Brown Stadium, but the lack of sufficient track width caused the meet to be moved to Yale. It was to come to Brown when a new track was built at Aldrich-Dexter (along Lloyd Avenue toward Arlington Avenue), but such a facility never eventu-ated. Facility-challenged Brown also held indoor track meets off - campus at Moses Brown’s field house. Track also took a hit when the famous Brown Interscholastic Track Meet, held on Memorial Day weekend for 61 years was terminated.
The on-field results for Brown’s 14 varsity teams during the Bi-centennial year varied dramatically. Overall against the Ivies the record was far below a 50% success rate. Soccer, under Cliff Ste-venson, tied for the Ivy title but did not repeat as NCAA Tourna-ment participants, a great disappointment since the NCAA finals were at Brown Stadium, the first soccer games ever played on that field. Football, under John McLaughry ‘40 had its first win-ning season (5-4) since 1958. More was expected of the 55 man squad, particularly because of the presence of two outstanding quarterbacks, Bob Hall ‘65 and Jim Dunda ‘65, but five games produced seven points or fewer. Hungry Bruin fans came out in large numbers however, including 17,000 for the Homecoming clash with Princeton.
Jim Fullerton’s skaters (21-9) provided all the excitement on cold winter nights, winning Brown’s first-ever outright Ivy champi-onship. Playing to standing room only crowds, hockey was the toughest ticket in town, and Meehan was THE place to be on the East Side on Saturday nights. The Chairman of the Athletic Advisory Council stated: “We wish we had more seating capac-ity.” On the final night of the season, the Bruins clinched the Ivy crown with a must-win 12-3 thrashing of Princeton before 2,600 rabid fans, including President Keeney. After the ECAC’s in Boston, Brown was chosen to participate in the NCAA finals at Meehan. After the season, Fullerton, in characteristic fashion deflected the congratulations to his players. “Give all the credit to the players. They went out and did the work.” Meanwhile, Stan Ward’s cagers played in relative obscurity at distant, aging Marvel Gym, finishing with a record of 7-17 and last place in the Ivy League (3-11). They barely beat Colby in overtime, and lost to

Springfield at Marvel. Other winter sports struggled as well, with Joe Watmough’s swimmers still waiting for the long- promised new pool. Spring was not much better, with only Cliff Stevenson’s lacrosse team being consistently competitive. The laxers went 8-6 in their third year of varsity play (the sport was discontinued in 1937), thanks to 25-1 and 15-1 drubbings of UConn and Holy Cross. Against the Ivies, they were 2-4 but rapidly approaching parity, with all contests decided by slim margins.
Participation in athletics was strong, with 946 men on varsity and freshman squads, in addition to 350 in Rugby, Sailing (which won the Ivy title) and Squash. Even more men were participating in intramurals, bringing the overall total of participants to 70% of all undergraduates. An additional 800 took part in Physical Educa-tion classes, according to Jack Heffernan ‘28, Director of Physical Education and Intramurals.
For the women at Pembroke, intercollegiate competition was lim-ited because of shoestring budgets (funding was from the Student Activities budget) and lack of opponents. It would be another decade before women would benefit from competing in the Ivy League on a full round-robin basis. Many contests were cancelled because students on women’s college campuses were increasingly focusing on women’s rights, social justice, and Vietnam. Philo-sophically, women embraced a different approach to intercollegiate competition, eschewing the term varsity athletics used by their male counterparts. According to Arlene Gorton ‘52, Director of Physical Education, the purpose of Pembroke intercollegiate sports was different: “Women resisted the male model of athletics; sports were principally for the enjoyment of the participants.” There was little fanfare and few spectators, and results were not reported in the student newspaper (Pembroke Record). Even the emergence of the country’s first women’s ice hockey team went unnoticed. Ironi-cally, the only action sports photo in the year’s Pembroke Records was of a men’s rugby game, doubtless the result of rugby founder Dave Zucconi’s ‘55 charming persuasiveness.
From the beginning of Ivy League play in 1956, Brown struggled to compete, especially in the high-profile sports of football and basketball. Alumni were embarrassed by Brown’s reputation as the doormat of the League. In October 1964, Maurice Clemence ‘34, Chairman of the Athletic Advisory Committee addressed alumni through a lengthy article in the Alumni Monthly entitled Athletics at Brown. In it he listed strengths, weaknesses, and ambitions. His future focus was squarely on upgrading Brown’s outdated facilities. He wrote; “We are perhaps the only University now in a position to build an entirely new plant for athletics and recreation. With the exception of Meehan Auditorium, our present facilities are expend-able and should be replaced. Clemence saw this as a golden oppor-tunity to “put Brown in the forefront” and to attain the level of ex-cellence in athletics that had been achieved academically. To those who thought Brown had short-changed athletics, he pointed out the recent expenditures of $2.5 million to purchase and improve Aldrich-Dexter (1957), and build Meehan (1961). He also pointed
to the $462 thousand budgeted for athletics and physical education (exclusive of plant maintenance) in the ‘64-’65 year. He affirmed that athletics are part of Brown’s educational mission and that fu-ture facilities should be multi-purpose, year-round, flexible, and not a monument to an architect’s vanity. The greatest need was a replacement for Marvel Gym, and Clemence noted that “President Keeney has referred to such a building as the “Olympian Gardens”. “The Corporation Committee under the direction of George Met-calf ‘13 had issued a preliminary report with “broad suggestions for a field house... and a swimming pool.”
The 1964 Liber Brunensis was more specific and detailed about forthcoming facilities, perhaps because at the end of the academic year plans for the magnificent Candela-designed mega-complex were taking shape. The Liber reported plans for “five intercon-nected buildings, including a swimming pool, a varsity basketball court (seating 5 to 7,000), an all-purpose “cage”, a student union, intramural sports facilities, and athletic department offices. In spite of all the rhetoric and optimistic hopes, this complex was simply too rich for Brown’s blood, and it would be nearly a decade before the next major facility would appear (Smith Swimming Center in 1973). Ironically, Aldrich-Dexter was the beneficiary of a Candela-designed building: the 1968 Heating Plant along Lloyd Avenue with its unique brick accordion-like walls, which was erected to comple-ment the proposed athletic facility.
The Bicentennial Celebration culminated with the inaugural Com-mencement Pops Concert, sponsored by the Brown and Pembroke Clubs, and held on the Pembroke Quad. During the final number, fireworks erupted at nearby Aldrich-Dexter, coinciding with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner’s words “bombs bursting in air”. Fast forward fifty years, and fireworks again marked a birthday celebration; the March 2014 beginning of Brown’s semiquincente-nary. The Brown of today is light years removed from the 1960’s, but becoming more competitive in the Ivy League and creating state-of-the-art athletic facilities are ongoing, constant challenges. The Nelson Center is our new crown jewel, but as was the case in the 1964 Clemence report, all of the other existing facilities need attention. Hopefully, the current Brown birthday celebration will cause us to take stock and move forward once again.
