Collective Responsibility: Citizens going about their daily lives. A snippet of what the ‘new normal’ is like nowadays.

Page 3: Brotherhood 16 Focus 18 Report 22 History 24

Editor’s Note

In the last issue of BOPA, we highlighted on the theme of ‘Unity through Covid-19’, and now fast forward into another year, it is with great hope that the world is heading towards an endemic by 2022, the ‘route towards endemicity’. We are

now expected to live with the Covid-19 virus and like all pandemics this too will end eventually. Many lives were taken away and many more families were hit by calamity due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is of course our duties to offer help and share the burden together as one.

Blessed with the advancement of technology and medical care, the world is now gradually recovering. With the invention and existence of vaccine, we hope to be able to live our lives normally. Actions taken by the government to reduce the number of positive cases and deaths can be witnessed today.

However, the aftermath of the pandemic can clearly be observed by all, including us in Malaysia. There lie daunting tasks to tackle on the road to recovery for the world. The OPA and our fellow brothers have joined hands from the beginning of the pandemic to lift the load of the members who were impacted not only in the sense of helping the frontliners managing the pandemic but also by easing other crucial aspects such as providing financial aid, mental health support, assisting education for the young and social well-beings of those affected.

In this issue of BOPA, we are proud to share the column “Aspiring Young OP’s” to aspire the young and old generations of OPAs, of three young OP’s; Nicholas Ong Yong Xen, Mohamed Khairel Adha bin Mohd Khairee and last but not least, Ahmad Yusuf bin Ahmad Azani who have become great role models in pursuing their dreams and uplifting the country’s name in the eyes of the world.

We are also excited to share a piece on Comradeship by our former President of OPA whom have served the association from 1971- 1972, OP Shahrudin Mohd Ali. Thank you, Sir, for your continuous support.

A transcribed piece taken from a speech by OP Azri Asyraf Zulkefli on “The Importance of Mental Health” has no other purpose but to educate and bring awareness of the health relating to our minds. As we know, Covid-19 has led to a sharp increase in depression and anxiety around the world. This piece would serve as a reminder to pay attention of how we feel, think and act.

Also, in this BOPA we highlight activities and updates that were held throughout the year 2021, while complying to constrained physical activities and gatherings. We also included articles that allows an injection of nostalgic memories for some of us,titled “A Day to Remember by The FMC PD BUDAK BOYS” and “Today in The History of RMC (then FMC)” written by OP Nawawi Mat Desa.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the President of OPA, OP Baha and the rest of my colleagues in the EXCO line-up as well as other OPs for their effort, advices, commitment and dedication in producing this issue of the BOPA magazine.

My thanks also to the team in Amanie Media and the Malaysian Business for their professional support.Thank you everyone and Happy Reading!

Yours Truly,

COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest communicable disease outbreak to have hit Malaysia since the 1918 Spanish Flu which

killed 34,644 people or 1% of the population of the then British Malaya. In 1999, the Nipah virus outbreak killed 105 Malaysians, while the SARS outbreak of 2003 claimed only 2 lives. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has so far claimed over 28,000 Malaysian lives.

From 18 March 2020, we have moved from MCO, CMCO, RMCO, another round of CMCO and RMCO, MCO 2.0, MCO 3.0 and the NRP (Phase 1-4), immunity conferred from natural infection and vaccines, patterns of social contact, and virus transmissibility will all play a role in what COVID-19 will look like as it continues to circulate in the months and years ahead.

The expectation that COVID-19 will become endemic essentially means that the pandemic will not end with the virus disappearing; instead, the optimistic view is that enough people will gain immune protection from vaccination and from natural infection such that there will be less transmission and much less COVID-19-related hospitalization and death, even as the virus continues to circulate.

On 11 October, the interstate travel ban was uplifted and it makes the new normal will at last be actively practiced and adhered to. The term we are the frontliners means so much now than ever as we need to observe the SOPs. The initiative is us alone.

As an OP, we were educated to the dot on the necessity of following the rules, it is empirical for us to lead by example, not only for public at large but more importantly for those close to us, our families, our neighbours and our community.

Being a frontliner, we should be proud if we can continue providing assistance and encouragement to those within our grasp of control.

Yet even when the pandemic does subside, we must reckon with the fact that the society that emerges will be profoundly different than the one that came before it. In myriad ways, daily life as we know it will have been fundamentally, and permanently, transformed. This brotherhood we have is a great platform where we can rely on each other to overcome whatever difficulties we may face.

I’m looking forward to this brotherhood to continue delivering the promise of being brother to one another and together we may rise again.

INTRODUCTION

The OPA Ikatan Kasih (IKOP) was founded by the late OP Sheikh Mohd Ghazali bin Sheikh Mohd

Yusoff on 18th December 2013 after the realization that there is an urgent need for a specific welfare section under the OPA to serve the needs of unfortunate Old Puteras (OPs).

IKOP objective is to help OPs in needs or “ditimpa musibah”, with emphasis on the health wellbeing of all OPs. The support includes moral, emotional and most importantly financial aid in order to assist the OP and their families in difficult times. IKOP assistance will be considered on case by case basis and order of priority to all OP’s regardless of their membership status with the OPA for the following situation.

Critical Illness (as generally classified by Insurance Companies).Prolong Disability.Natural Disaster or Accident.Death by Accident.Extreme PovertyFuneral Expenses.

REVIEW OF YEAR 2020 & 2021

In June 2020, IKOP donated RM500 to OP Muhammad Nur Hashurah (82 H) who was admitted to Pusat Jagaan Mental Nur Qhaseh, Ipoh, Perak for mental disorder.

In July 2020, IKOP including OPA and OP Nik Rizal (02), who represented OP Hafiz’s batchmate, initiated a meeting regarding Sumber Demi Hafiz (SDH) to discuss further on the future plans for OP Hafiz Abu Tahir (02F). OP Nik Rizal proposed to relaunch the SDH fund as well as to organize charity events with OPA and IKOP and to establish social media management and event planning tools.

In October 2020, IKOP donated RM500 to the mother of OP Ahmad Safuan (98F) who has a heart failure (Stage C). OP Ahmad Safuan’s mother passed away in February 2021.

Meanwhile in January 2021, OP Hafiz managed to receive assistance from PERKESO and IKOP (on behalf of OP Hafiz) whom submitted an application for Invalidity Pension or “Pencen Ilat” from PERKESO. PERKESO approved his application and OP Hafiz received his Invalidity Pension beginning June 2021 and will be given for the rest of his life.

Also in January 2021, IKOP donated RM2,000 to OP Fansuri (86) after his house caught fire inTaman Sri Keramat (AU2), Kuala Lumpur. There were no casualties and OP Fansuri’s family are safe.

The OPA President, OP Baharudin Mahyuddin (F Coy; 1977-1979), three other OPA Exco members, the OPA Manager and 10 other OPs were also present. OP Mohamad Sham, (H Coy; 1960-1963) also presented a cheque for RM4,000/ to OP Fansuri on behalf of a foundation of which he is Chairman.

The FMC Port Dickson (1952-1961) Budak Boys Group took the initiative to reach out to their fellow Budak Boys requesting for donations for OP Fansuri, whose house in Taman Seri Keramat, Kuala Lumpur caught fire on the night of 27 January 2021. The incident was a tragic experience for OP Fansuri and his family, however his whole family are safe and sound.

As quoted by Shannon L. Adler “One of the most important things you can do on this earth is to let people know they are not alone.” Fellow Budak Boys raised RM20,000 from donations of various amount. Donations that are still coming in will be credited to OP Fansuri’s bank account.

OP Fansuri and his wife were deeply moved by the care and concern shown by the FMC Port Dickson Budak Boys, the oldest goup of Old Puteras, and conveyed their profound thanks to all of them.

This camaraderie demonstrated was born out of our Budak Boy brotherhood, developed by a sense of togetherness forged on the parade grounds where we, as Puteras once marched.

The OPA salute the FMC Port Dickson (1952-1961) Budak Boys’ Group for the initiative to raise the money in support of an OP in need. Thank you to all OPs from OP FMC Group to young OPs that came forward to offer their assistance. May they all be blessed.

T he pioneers of the FMC/RMC are now in their 80s. Without doubt they have

fulfilled the expectation to serve as leaders in the many varied fields towards development of our country MALAYSIA.

Except for the no.1 post, we have OPs serving in every branch of Government services, as ministers, heads of GLCs, CEOs in the corporate sectors, bankers, educationists, scientists, researchers and the list continues.

Not to be forgotten are the self-made millionaires who had donated generously to the OPA development fund that today we have our own building an income to help the needy to pursue their education and to assist those going through difficulties in life. Our main contribution is towards military service where OPs had dominated the positions of Chiefs of Armed Forces, the three services and practically many heads of specialisation in the Military Services.

The College can be proud of the many bravery awards in the course of their duty. In sports the college continues to carry the national flag in international events including the Olympic games.

The common bond amongst the graduates of the college is the Old Putera Association (OPA) which has been in existence since 1971. The association has kept track of members’ achievements in life over the years and through their journey and social activities kept everyone in touch.

As the inaugural president of this Association, I had the honour of conducting the first meeting at my

residence in the Ministry of Defence. The pro-tem committee headed by OP Kadir Kasim had established the foundation for the OPA to function as an association. Starting with zero budget, I must thank the founding committee members for volunteering and supporting the association to commence its services to serve the OPs. My only regret was that I was duly posted to serve the Five Power Defence Arrangement (FPDA) at its Headquarters in Butterworth Airbase and could not continue to serve OPA whose activities were mainly concentrated in Kuala Lumpur area. With most members at the peak of their career, volunteers to serve the committee were scarce but the spirit continues.

Today the OPA can be proud of the fact that it is one of the leading alumni associations in the country with more than 3,000 registered members, and its own building and stable income to pursue its objective of serving the nation. Thanks to the generosity of its members who generously donate to its cause. We are proud to see our members as front liners to serve the needy and conduct social and welfare work during national disasters.

The OPA is generally well supported by members but differences amongst members are not an exception. In the spirit of goodwill issues are well managed through due process of comradeship.

The OPA has been in existence over 50 years. It is clear generation gap does exist and it’s starting to be obvious that the senior members are beginning to be out of touch with junior members. The members of the RMC at Port Dickson have

Comradeship OPA

established their own group and it is well supported by members in the group. They organise visits and social activities and kept members informed of the happening.

It maybe a good idea that similar arrangement be introduced for other members to accommodate membership within their own group who can keep in touch and socialise within the group. I do believe there exist similar groups based on intake.

Finally, may I take this pleasure of thanking members who have helped me over the years and kept in touch through thick and thin. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to serve the OPA from the beginning and to continue serving to this date in the Board of Trustee and Board of Appeal. Again, my grateful thanks that events have always been proceeding smoothly with member’s strong support.

Dawn is approaching and my time is up. The RMC has been my life. It’s been a long and pleasant journey of life. I pray that the college will continue to fulfil the nation’s need and wish all members a successful and peaceful future.

Thank you, RMC.

Remember that block up the hill? That mass of concrete which to the normal person is just an array of buildings, rooms to inhabit and operate from?

But to us it means much more than that. It is more often than not a chest of priceless shared memories, it journals a slew of experiences and it holds indescribable meaning for all of us Old Puteras.

It was a place where we were congregated and inseminated with the principles we hold dear until today. A place where thousands of young boys turned and evolved into men.

For many of us today, we still hold dear the brotherhood and camaraderie of being Old Puteras, of having a common trait with many others of different ages, races and religions. Some of us pine and long for a place we can go to and call our Boys’ Adult Wing, a place for Old Puteras where everybody knows your name and you theirs.

Look no further as we do have such a space we can call home. The OPA building is an asset owned by our alma mater alumni association.

The 3-storey building includes the Penthouse where the OPA facilities and offices are located as well as a second floor and a ground floor which is currently rented out.

The penthouse houses top notch facilities including an equipped sound system to cater for events such as festivities, weddings as well as batch gatherings.

Feel free to have a sneak peek at the area and its packages by contacting the secretariat team. They’ll be more than happy to assist you and your value for money!

Dear fellow OPs,

In January 2021, the OPA initiated the idea to digitize our RMC Yearbook or affectionately known as “The Bugler”. We believe that it is crucial for OPA to archive one of the most important publications in the digital era. This is OPA’s small contribution to preserve our Alma Mater history.

The collections represent an invaluable contribution by Budak Boys from the earliest 1965’s edition. Our Digital Bugler Library provides a permanent record of each year as seen and told by the Commandant, Teachers and the Puteras (Budak Boy).

We would like to personally thank the RMC administration and the following OPs for loaning their Bugler hard copies to us during the first phase of this project. Some of them were truly excited about this project and even came forward to the OPA Building personally to pass their Bugler copies to the OPA Secretariat.

"My father was a professional military man. When he was 14, he left his small village in Perak to join the Federated Military College, now known as Royal Military College (RMC). A man of few words, he brought us up in the only way he knew — the military way.

When I was 16, I followed in his footsteps and joined the RMC. One of the biggest lessons I learnt from him happened when I was caught breaking a major college rule. The punishment meted out included having my head shaved and my father, a Commanding Officer based in Johor Bharu, was notified of course.

When dad showed up at my college, I knew I was in a lot of trouble. He didn't say much, except "Hello" and "Follow me". He took me out to a banana leaf restaurant and we had a quiet lunch.

After our meal, he told me something that has stuck with me to this day. "Shah," he began. "You can do whatever you want in your life but you'll have to accept the consequences of your decisions and actions. You've got to take full responsibility and not expect anyone to help you out if you land yourself in trouble. What you get yourself into, you get out of it yourself. Also remember that what you do may also affect others. So, before you decide to do anything, ask if your actions will affect anyone else."

This was a lesson I learnt from my father at 16. It was also a Banana Leaf lunch that I'll never forget!"

Belang Harimau BesiThe book entitled Somalia: Belang Harimau Besi or Striped Iron Tiger tells the true story of the struggles for more than 90 members of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT 1) who risked their lives to rescue US soldiers in fighting in Somalia in 1993. A history worth to be told that happened 27 years ago.

The honoured book was launched at the 19th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment Mechanized (19 RAMD Mek) on 26 March 2021.

The book launching ceremony was officiated by the Commander of the Army (PTD) General Tan Sri Datuk Zamrose Mohd Zain. The author of the book is Maj Gen Dato 'Mohd Halim Khalid.

He was among the 90 officers and members of the 19th Battalion RAMD (Mek) involved in the UN peacekeeping mission (MALBATT 1 UNOSOM II) in

Mental health refers to human mental health which affects emotions, thoughts and

actions. Nowadays there are various mental awareness campaigns which has the same mission which is to give awareness to the society.

There are various types of mental health problems such as Schizophrenic, Bipolar, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, and Anxiety.

Today I would like to share my experience and information about depression and anxiety from the point of view of a patient. The cause of this mental health problem varies according to each person. Some are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, some are caused by heredity or genetics in their family. As for me, it was due to a “Traumatic Incident” in my life.

Generally, a traumatic incident refers to any situation that occurred either during childhood or in later phase of life, which might have caused physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological harm to the person experiencing it. It may be extremely big and changes the mindset of someone.

Meanwhile, depression is a mood disorder which gives the impression that someone is in the lowest state

of his/her life and this could occur in a very long period of time if left untreated. The person will feel hopeless, extreme insecurity, having trouble sleeping at night, and they will tend to isolate themselves for a long period of time. This will normally be coupled with sadness and crying. The most dangerous action is, they can have suicidal thoughts that leads to ending their lives in silo.

Anxiety on the other hand, is where you feel like your heart is going at a 1000/mph but your body is stagnant, you can’t move, you are not doing any extreme activities, you will be feeling extremely annoyed and confused as if your life will end as fast as a lightning.

The effects of depression and anxiety are, it will affect the way we think, it will affect your focus in daily activities and routine and it will definitely be difficult for the person to lead and handle a normal life.

Nowadays, given the modern technology advancement and infrastructure, society are still in the dark on what constitutes mental health and how people with mental health disorders are leading their lives in the dark. This is due to the lack of exposure and unluckily for those affected by this, they will be a

victim of societal prejudice. For example, if there was a person

who wants to attempt suicide due to a bad breakup or relationship, society will be laughing at them and give cynical point of views. Yet, what they don’t know is that mental health is a serious condition similar to physical health. When someone has anxiety, some will label them as crazy and commonly in the Malay community, the patient will be labelled as “kurang agama” or less religious. This has to stop!

Mental health has been recognised by our health ministry and WHO, World Health Organisation as cognitive, behavioral and emotional well-being.

For those who suffer from these symptoms, help is all around you. You should find someone who is a close friend, whom you can trust, and let them know about your troubles. Secondly, from a professional point of view, find a health clinic where you can make an appointment with a psychiatrist. Please do prioritize on your mental health.

Help is around the corner my friend.
