There is an easy fix for most occurrances of the LOW INK or INK EMPTY warning. If the customer reports he has replacedthe ink color indicated, and the message won't clear:

Power-down the machine with the button on the front panel. Let it finish any cycling.1.Unplug AC power.2.Lift the right-hand end of the scanner to open the ink cartridge area.3.Pull back the white latch hooks to remove all four cartridges. Set the cartridges upright on the table.4.Brother says aftermarket ink cartridges may cause this problem. Make sure that all four cartridges are genuine

Brother ink. Replace any generic ones before going farther.

5.

Check the levels of the ink visible in the cartridges. The machine has sensors that look through the clear rib in the

right-hand side of each cartridge. Assuming you find all cartridges at least half-full:

6.

Leaving the machine open and empty of ink, plug in the power.7.The display will tell you it has no black ink, and to install a cartridge. Install the black ink.8.Following the color order on the display, replace each of the ink cartridges.9.Lower the scanner. You'll have to push in the top end of the blue support bar to start lowering it.10.The machine should come up ready.11.

This has done the trick on all the machines we've seen like this, so far. Surprisingly, it's not in any manual or ServiceUpdate, including one about this problem, though I received these instructions over the phone from a Brother tech monthsago.

Brother uses a combination of optical sensing and inkdrop counting to detect low ink. In the rib in the side of the ink cartridge is a black plastic block, floating on the ink. When it drops below the optical sensor in the body of the machine, the machine detects a low ink condition. It displays the low ink warning for that color and begins counting drops. At70,000 ink drops after the threshold, it declares an ink empty condition and refuses to print at all.

Apparently the routine above resets the sensor's thresholds for light and dark conditions.

If the routine above doesn't help, try cleaning the sensors, easily visible and accessible when the ink is out. Resettingthe memory in Maintenance Mode might help:

In rapid succession, touch Menu, Black-Start, ^, ^, ^,^. (That's the up-arrow button, four times.)

1.

If you were successful the display should readMAINTENANCE, and all light should flash together. If not, touch STOP and try it again.

2.

Touch 9, 1. The display should read PARAM INIT for afew seconds, while it erasesmost of its memory. It willnot clear its programmed name and phone number, nor the fax directory entries.

3.

Touch 9, 9 to exit Maintenance Mode. The machinewill go through its complete power-up sequence, takingabout a minute to reach its Ready condition.

4.

If you still have the problem, you may have a bad inksensor board, or the board may be off its mounts.
