“Turning teams of experts into expert teams“

Simulation gives individuals and/or multidisciplinary teams the opportunity to deliberately practice high-risk, low-frequency events or procedural tasks within a safe environment. Through simulation we can improve individual health professionals’ skills, strengthen teamwork, integrate and learn from error. (...) The delivery of high quality healthcare requires not only highly trained individuals but an effective high functioning team.

RCH Simulation Program, Melbourne, Australia

Over the years, medical simulation has evolved from enhancing technical skills and clinical abilities to developing non-technical skills such as clinical assessment, situational awareness, fast decision making and effective communication between team members and members of different specialties.

In a simulation scenario, healthcare professionals are acting in a realistic environment using high-fidelity simulators as well as their usual clinical equipment. They are expected to perform as in real life, with the main advantage of training while not putting any patient to risk. In this way, with proper and immediate feedback, they can reflect on the consequences of their actions, individually or as a team, and they can repeat the manoeuvres or the scenario until they feel fully confident in their skills, decisions and behaviour.

*Several important studies have proved that simulation can be an effective tool for learning, if the following criteria are met:

Simulation-based training to improve patient safety

Offering immediate, professional feedback (by the instructor or by the simulation equipment)Setting clear, relevant and achievable learning objectivesDeliberate, sustained practiceMeeting the curriculum demandsOffering a controlled, safe environment, centred on the learnerOffering the opportunity for reflexive learningProviding high quality simulation equipment, appropriate for the competence level of the learner

Who we areWe are the Center for Human Resource Development "For Life", a non-governmental organization that came into existence in 2009. Our mission is to identify, assess and attend the training needs of the medical staff and to contribute to increase the quality of healthcare services. Our vision is to achieve a quantifiable and sustained improvement in many areas of patient safety. "For Life" is authorized by the National Authority for Qualifications as a training services provider. Our courses are certified by the Romanian College of Physicians and the Order of Nurses, Midwives and Medical Assistants in Romania and provide CME points. In 2014 we opened our own Center for Medical Simulation, LifeSIM, located in Bucharest. Our team is formed by specialists with broad clinical experience as well as national and international experience in educational methods based on medical simulation.

Whom we addressHealthcare practitioners (medical specialists, resident physicians, nurses, midwives, medical equipment technicians)Medical staff in training (students from Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, resident doctors)Hospital managers and leaders/managers of healthcare organizationsPersonnel involved in the activities of a medical simulation center (instructors, technicians, managers)Paramedics, firefightersPharmaceutical companies, medical device companiesAny company/institution/society interested in medical education and training (e.g. of their staff)

Our offer

In terms of teaching …

• HUMAN FACTOR PERFORMANCE TRAINING: a program focused on CRM concept and communication skills.

• PRODUCT TRAINING: training on how to use the medical devices and the pharmaceutical products by means of medical simulation solutions.

• PRODUCT TESTING: testing the and healthcare services by means of medical simulation solutions.

equipment

• BASIC LIFE SUPPORT: training programs for the general public.

• SKILLS TRAINING: training for the development and improvement of individual skills (basic, medium and advanced skills) for clinical and surgical specialties.

• TEAM SKILLS TRAINING: training for the development and improvement of skills within the team (e.g. BLS, ALS).

• CRM (Crisis Resource Management) TRAINING: immersive simulation training, with complex, interactive, instructor-guided clinical scenarios, followed by debriefing.

• SYSTEM CHECK: in-situ simulation that takes place in the actual working environment or during the transport of the patient; in-situ simulation can proactively uncover errors or flaws when designing a medical space or before putting it into use..

• TRAIN-THE-TRAINER: a course for future trainers who intend to provide skills training or CRM training.
