Then there is the Brooklyn wmerfronr, best ~ccn from the water, and we had at least two opportunities to cruise on the harbor. Add in steam, trains, and the mnm1faccure ,,fa vmiety of goods from pianos tti sug;ir, excellent paper sessions, and good fooJ, and, well, it was nn SI.A conference in the best tradition.

Upon checking in at the confe rence hotel, the Marriott, a few blocks from the BrMklyn Bridge, each regis­trant received a handsomely pro­duced industrial guide­book, Brooklyn, East of the River, South of the S011ncl, edited b y

the SIA's own Ann Dichtcr, M,1ry Habsrricr, nnd Jlastin Spivey, and desig1'lcd hy Joe Macasck. In addition 10 the L1sut1I. goodies ( transit maps, MetroCards, posrcarJs, etc.), we nil received a copy of Michael Robbins and Wendy Palitz's, Brooklyn: A Scace of Mind (Workman Pub., 2001 ), a C(1llection of stories :oi.bout Brooklyn people, places, nnd hiscory. Author Michael Robbins, a charter member of the SIA, was our guest spenkcr at the elegant Brooklyn Borough Hall, huilt in 1848 in the Greek Revival style, for the Thursday cvl'!ning opening reception. He gave us his cake on Brooklyn as the hig city with a sm,111-town attitude reflected in ics numerous neighborhoods .md industries. Borough President Mnrty Markowitz emhusiastically welcomed rhc SIA m Brooklyn.

The goal of the pilot session was, in part, to draw a new audi , ence to SIA programs and fulfill a goal set our during the \'(//tither IA retreat ISIAN, Summer­Fall 200L). The SIA board will be evaluating the session and considering wherher to offer similar programs in the future.

Thursda)•'s offerings included a choice of three tours-Gowanus Canal, Cast Iron Studios, or My Bmoklyn. The group boarded the SlA members appreciate Brooklyn's Acadia Cemetery in a different way after touring nearby Chelsea Screamer, a bright-yellow, open-air stone-cutting shops. The tour, led b\' George Bulow [SIA], offered our first introduction to the Brooklyn waterfront and its distinctive I 9th-c. brick warehouses, which were the subject of n paper session on Saturda)'. Passing through the Buttermilk Channel (between Brooklyn and Governors Island) and rounding the Red Hook Terminals, the cruise ship entered the Gowanus Canal. Today the canal is chiefly interest• ing for its several movable bridges and n few remaining canal-side operations handling fuel oil, stone, and other building materials. The Gowan us has a distinguished history, dating back to the 1660s when Dutch seeders c.in,,lizc<l the Gowanus C reek. It was improved in the mid-19rh-c. arid by the 1880s, dozens of firms handling grain, hay, oil, fert ilizers, and other bulk goods had locat· cd along it. The mile-long canal reaches deep into the heart of

The Cast Iron Studios tour was the fim of many where partici­pants used their MetroCards to rnke mass transit. The: group vis­ited the Manhattan studio of Shu Ii Sade [SIA] in a fonner electri­cal manufacturer's building. The artist displayed her rhocography of industrial and engineering sites. Participants were then treated to a walking tour of the cast-iron buildings (magnets out!) in the Soho Case-Iron an<l Tribeca East Historic Districts, followed by a ~top ar the 1867 building owned by General Tools. There, refresh­ments were served and General Tools President Gerry Weinstein [SIA] exhibited his collection of model steam engines and an 0-scnle mcxicl of the :-.JY Central RR.

Estelle Haferling, born-and-bred in Brooklyn, led a walking tour that offered a personal glimpse into gmwing up in the neigh­borhoods of DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), Vinegar Hill, and Will iamsburg amongst the sights and SOllnds of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, warehnuscs, and elevated rail­ronds. SJAcrs had time to enjoy the industrial architecture ~md get .i sense of the waterfront's heyday.

Construction began on the 200-acre Bush Tcrmin::il in 1895 and expanded through the 1920s under the guidance and vision of industrialist lrving T. Bush. He also explores che motivations of the company, demonstrating its concern to use rhe latest nnd best ava ilable equipment-to protect the mine property, of course, but also to protect its workers-and typically exceedir1g gbvernment require­ments for the amoLJnt of air circulatir1g through the mine. Whi le there were accidents, they were fewer here chan in most of the region's mines, and they led to improvements that lessened the inherent dangers of mining. TI1is attention to the impacc of the fans on the miners' lives gives the scory of rhe Dorrance Coll iery fans a significant human dimension rhat extends to the closing of chis and many mher mines in the Wilkes-Barre area with the flooding of the Knox Mine Disaster i t1 1959. In ocher words, David's article goes well beyond the detai ls of fan design and development. It also presents those aspects of this complex very effectively, using good writing augmented by gooo photographs, maps, diagrams and drawings. And David makes a case for rhe preservation of this fan complex, including, as it docs, what is probably the only survivini;: example of the most common type of fon once used in the anthracite region. All in all, chis article is well written, clear, detailed and multi-dimensional as it cxplaim the importance of the Dorrance Colliery's fan complex to rhe his­tory of the coal-mi11ing industry. •

No one in this cow1try has been more closely involved in indus, trial archeology for so l011g as the recipient of this ycnr's General Tools Award. His work in IA goes back to the late 1960s. He was one of the first employees of the Historic Americfm EngiI1eering Record (HAER). He was also one of the founders of the SIA. Although he has never ,()ught elected posit ion in the national organization, he has illways been a loyal SIA member, taking on important roles in org:\nizing conferences and t.ours, giving many prcsen.tations, and helping co make Southern New England Chapter (SNEC) one of the ll'l<)St active chapret·s. His most impor, rant contributions co industrial archeology have been in his profes­sional work as an award-winning hiscorical architect and p,1rk designer. Throughout his incredibly productive professional career, he has focused on industrial cornmuniries and structures. The waterpowet system ac the Slater Mill Historic Site could not have been re-crenred without his design ski lls. We would nor have the Lowell National Historical Park if it had Mt been for the HAER survey that he co-supervised. Neither the city of Lowell nor its Pork would be as successful without his consrnnr efforrs for more th:m rwo decades. He was the chief historical architect of the Lowell Historical Preservation Commission from J 980 co 1995. Now he is a chief architect for the Lowell ~.:1tional Hismrical Park.

He helped Pere Molloy .1nd Pat Malone organize the first Lowell Conference in 1974, and he was one of the principal coordin,1tors and tour direcrors of the 1984 Boston conference. The Boston guidebooks and maps, designed by Chuck, arc some of the best SIA has ever produced. Ar the same titn1;?1 SIA and SNEC sponsored a combined meeting with TJCC!H, a monumental task that taxed the endurance of everyone involved. Chuck wrote the guidebook and rnn the T!CCIH "excur, sion" in Lowell . When you ask for Chuck Panott's help on some SIA activity, you gee ic. He loves the SIA and he pays his dl1es, lit­erally and figuratively. He docs his work quietly and without a lot of fanfare, but he is alw,,ys rhere when you need him.

It would be time consuming to lisr all the ]A projects that Chuck Parrott has done as a private consul cant or as an employee of the HAER, rhe Prescrvati011 Assistance Division of the NPS, the Lowell Historic Preservation. Commission, rhe Lowell National

Historical Park, or John Milner Associates. Chuck's dedica­tion to induscrinl research never falters. Although he has

never been an acndemic, he has published a fine book on historic buildings in Lowell, several guidebooks, and an article with Pc1t M,1lone for IA. He has also been a con­tributing author co many archcologicnl reports. His pho­tographic sk ills .ind ,.k1frsmanship are very impressive.

TI1e Scone Cold Iron tour, Jed by Mary Habstritt [SIA]. was for chose who don't mind cemeteries, of which Brooklyn has quite a few, memorialized in numerous movies and TV shows. Some local industries srill supply services to the funerary business, including Michael J. Colonna, one of the very few monumenc carvers still cutting stone by hand. The A. Ottavino Corp. is also a stone-cut­ting business, housed in a building bL.1ilc in 1915 for a monument carver that served three nearby Jewish cemeteries. Om1vino's cur, rent work is mostly in building and fine arrs restoration. Among their significant projects have been Brooklyn Borough Hall, the U.S. Custom House in lower Manhattan, and rccormrucrion of the Whitney Museum's granite facade, not w mention recon­struction of the 2,000-yr.-old Egyptian Temple of Dendur for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lunch included a tour of rhc near• by Acadia Cemetery. A stop at Dallis Bros. Coffee Roasters sped the Stone Cold tour goers on their way, but this was no trendy cof, fee boutique; it's rhc shop established by Russian emigr.HHS Abe and Morris Dall is in 1926. The Long Island RR's Hillside Maintenance Complex is a modem facility serving the nation's busiest commuter railroad. S!Aers saw robots c:md automaticall1• guided vehicles (AGVs) retrieving and delivering spare parn and learned about car repair and rhe demanding job of keeping up with an aging fleet that suffered man)• years of deferred maintenance.

From Boats to Boxes, the last of the Friday toms led by Bill Wilkie [SIA], took in tbe Brooklyn Navy Yard, the city's oldest operating industry, tracing its origins ro a private shipyard esrnb­lishcd in the 1790s. The U.S. Navy acquired the 255-acre facility in 180 1. The oldest building on rhe property is the Commandant's House ( 1806). The group toured the dry docks, including Dry Dock No. l, built between 1841 and 1851. By WW I, the yard numbc:red six dry docks, two building ways, eight piers, 270 build­ings, 19 miles of streets, c1nd 30 miles of railroad tracks. Much of the historic fabric of the yard is intact even though chc Navy moved out in L966 and spAce is now leased to 35 renoncs, includ­ing Se.main Ship Building, Coastal Dry Dock & Repair, and Marsel Mirror. The boxes in chis tour's name refers co chc several brick faccorics, built beginning in l887 by Robert Gair for his box­m,lking busi1,ess. Secretary's Report: Secretary Richard Artderson announced that the minutes of che last buslness meeting were published in the Summer 2001 issue of the SIAN. He called for additions and cor· rections to the minutes. There being none, the Secretary's report was accepted by motion and unanimous vote.

Treasurer1s Report: Treasurer Nanci Batchelor sratcd chat the SIA is classified as tax-exempt under the IRS Code 501 (c) as an educational organization, and we file a Form 990 tax return year• Ly. The SIA maintains its books and records on a cash basis and

maintains a calendar ye,lr reporting period. The report that fol­lows is an accounting of the year that ended Dec. 31 , 2001.

We began 2001 with a total fund balance of $169,203. Cash receipts for the year totaled $90,358. The majority of our annual income comes from the v,1riot1s membership dues categories. In 2001 the meal dues received were $72,925. The balan.cc of $17,433 was comprised of interest income ($5,236), publication sale~, receipts of excess funds from tours and conferences, and finally contributions-both general and restricted ($2,933). Total expenses for the year were $76,977. The prodL1Ction coses of our major publications, the SIAN and the Journal, cotnbined for a total of $44,090. The balance of $32,877 was spent on a combi­nation of labor ($12,902), postage ($3,189), insurance, prizes and

Dell Rapids Bridge

rock, then buil t a set of m isses from the shores tO the pier in mid­rivcr. At first glance, each sp;,n of th is two-span bridge appears to be a four-paneled Pratt J eck-trnss. A more careful exnminatlon reveals chat the truss has a most unusual wri t1kle.

The web strnrs in a smndnn.l Pr.m trnss are all trne verticals. The stn1rs in the Dlc!II R.1pids truss incline slightly, lcuning inward rnward the miJ ,spnn of rhc cop chord. While this dcviac.inn mighc seem triv­ial, it c<mstitured a sophisticated, logical innov;ition. It produced a slightly mere efficient t!'\1ss, and probobly did so at :l slightly lower cost.

The srnnclard truss configuration divides the spr111 length into a seril:!S uf t!qual length segment~. or p:mel~. 1 n a ~t,111dard Pnitt deck-rn1ss, the sloped segments of the bottom chord nt each end are longer than the horizontal segments tn the midd l<c! panels, as they form the hypotenuse of a triangle.

The designers of the Dell Rapids Bridge, however, made all their tensile bottorn chord eye-bar segments the same length, whether t'1ey were hori~onwl or slo/)ed . The cop compression chord was also compris1cd uf equa l-length parts. The length of e,1ch indi ­vidual cop,chord segment w£1s slightly shorter than rhc length of each individual boctom-chord segment. bottom chord segments due to the bottom chord's slightly longer sloping segments in the two end panels.

The unavoidable geometric ramification o( the Dell Rapids ~olution was that che verticals could nor remain verticnl, buc leaned slightly inward coward the center of the span. Only the center vertical remained a true vertical. Once the decision w,1s made to make the inclined bottom chord segment in the end pan­els the 5ame length as the horizontal segments of the bottCJm ch<)rd, all else followed.

11,e decision to fabricate the chords from equal parts has the obvi­ous advantnge nf simrliFying the mantifacturing process. It would seem, in the absence of any records, that cl1is was the motivating rea· son for the Dell Rapids configuration. All the bottom chord member:; have ~he sinnc length. All top chord members have the same lengcl1. Given the same span nnd load conditions, the Dell Rapids P11\tt, when compared to ;i st-md,1rd Pr<Ht deck trt1ss, turns out to be slightly n1c1re efficient. No penalty had been paid for simplify ing fubrication!

If the Dell RapiJ s configurntic'm hotl1 cost less and M\S structural­ly :,;ound, one h:1s to wonder why others did not independently arrive at the same solution, or even adopt its appronch for the design of other bridges. Apparently sorneoi1e cnme ~1p with a workable and innovative approach, but llO one llOticed ()r took advantage of ir.

Perhaps ''better" is in rhe t!yes of the heh()lder. Locaced in southeast Ohio, the region wa~ the premier charcoal-imn-pro­ducing area in che U.S. just prior tO the C ivil War. It survived the transition to the coke age and is still producing iron.

The conference began Friday wi th .ni extended tOl1r of rhe lower Hanging Rock Iron Region. Stops included the Welsh­American Heritage Museum in Oak Hill, where we were creat· ed to exhibits celebrating Jackson County's Welsh iron· making heritage; the Jefferson Fumace, the last of the region's charcoal fumaces co operate, going our of blast in L 916; the O live Funrnce, one of the many forn:ices char used narur• al rock outcroppings in its con· struction; the res cored Vesuvius Furnace, located in the Wayne National forest; and a visit to the Lawrence County Historic.ii Society Museum in Ironton, once the home of ironmaster Col. George N. Grny. This long day was capped with a photo stop at AK Steel's A1m111da Furnace, located just across the Ohio River in Ashland, KY.

SITES & STRUCTURES

The fate of the N:nional Regiscer-lisccd New Milford Pumping Station of che Hrickensack Water Co. in Oradell. NJ (see SIAN, Fall 1996) remains undecided. Last year che SlA Board adopted a resolution urging the preservation of che site, which made the made the National Trl1st's "11 Mose Endangered Historic Places" list in June. The NJ Dept. of Environmencal Protection has grant­ed a one-year extension for the variol1S parties to agree to a solll· tion that will preserve the pumping station. Meanwhile, the department reqL1ired thnt Bergen County, which owns the site, pm· tecc the buildings from weather and vandals. To dace, the COllnty, Oradell Borough, and local commlloity groups have not been able co come up with a mutually agreeable program for reuse and preser· vation. In recent years, the county has repeatedly threatened to raze chc pumping sration and claimed chat its preservacion is not financially feasible. Builr between 1882 and 1911, the New Milford Pumping Station includes the filcmtion plant and labs where George Spalding developed the active-carbon filtration sys, tem chat became the industry standard. The pump house has Allis, Chalmers triple-expansion pumping engines installed in 191 l and a Corliss pumping engine installed in 1915.

Also placed on the National Trust's "11 Most Endangered List" were Indiana's historic bridges, nominated by che Hiscoric L.:indm.uks Four'lclation of lndiana with the inter1tion of drawing attention to the need for preserving historic bridges throughout the state. The foundation clnirns chat hundreds of historic bridges have been lost since the 1980s, although there have also been some success stories. The Carroll County (IN) Historic Bridge Coalition recently saved the Paint Creek Bridge, a bowstring trus;; built in 1873 by the Massillon (OH) Bridge Co. The bridge was moved from its original location over Paint Creek, repaired, and relocated to a hiking trail over the Wabash & Erie Canal in north Delphi. Volunteers began the work of moving the bridge in Mar. 1998. They removed the old wood deck and, after receiving a grant, hired a contractor to move the 70-ft.-long truss seven miles to a ware­house. Restoration work began with assistance from Jim Cooper [SIA]. TI1e bridge turned out to be in remarkably good condition, and less than five percem of the original metal parts had to be replaced. Moving the bridge co its new site brought out hundreds

of people and the news media. Afccr it had been sec on its new abutments, volunteers set to work decking the bridge with white• oak planks fresh cut on site front donated timber. Two rare Whipple bowstring truss bridges are under restoration in upstate :--Jew York. Jn Janu(lry, the Black River Canal Museum (Booneville) welcomed home an iron bridge based on the design of noted A1nerican engineer Squire Whipple .ind built by J. M. Whipple of Booneville in the 1850s. The truss bridge originally spanned the canal, but in later years it was relocated to carry a local road over Sugar Creek in nearby Talcottville, where it had stood until its homecoming. In Palmyra, the Aldrich Change Bridge (SIAN, Summer l 998), erected in 1858 over the Erie Canal to allow barge-haulu.1g mules and horses co cross, has been carefully restored and reassembled with the help of Francis Griggs [SIA]. By the end of summer, it will be lifted by a crane onto its new site over the bed of the old Erie Canal in a city park.

On June 29, Calhoun County (MI) sponsored its annual living, history demonstration at Historic Bridge Park, Emmett Twp., easr of Battle Creek. This unique park serves as a site co relocate and preserve truss bridges that have outlived their usefulness on public roads and as a place to practice hiscoric mernl truss manu­facturing ai1d industrial building techniques such as riveting, forge welding, and blacksmithing. This year's living-history day coin• cided with dedication of che restored Gale Road Bridge, a 122-ft.• long Prate through truss. The Hojnck Bridge over che Genesee River it, Rochester, NY, contim1es to be under threat oi demolition, although the Coast Guard re.cently delayed its order to have CSX remove the bridge as an obstruction to navigacion. The steel swing bridge was builc in l 905 by the King lron Bridge &. Manufacturing Co. of Cleveland. Local preservationists, including several SIA mem­

The Kim:un Viaduct (Kimua Bridge Seate Park, PA) hal> been clt)~ed to railroad traffic due r.o safety con· cems. The viaduct, built in 1882 and rebuilt in 1900, towers 301 ft. above the valley f1oor and was consid­ered the highest rnilro.id bridge in the world when built. It closed tO rail traffic in 1959 and a state park opened around the bridge in 1970. Excursion trains on the Knox, Kane & Kinzua RR began taking tourists across the bridge in 1987, but now that service will be stopped because engineers have determined che piers are not strong enough to support trains crossing the 2,053-ft.-long structure. Brooklyn Bridge For Sale! Really. lrl July, the Brooklyn Bridge was for sale on e-bay. The opening bid-$10,000 plus shipping and handling. This Brooklyn Bridge was a 75-ycar-old, 100-ft.• long, steel through-miss bridge in Brooklyn, lowa. The seller was the contractor in charge of building its replacemem. Did someone buy the Brooklyn Bridge? As of the close of bidding, no rubes had placed a bid, although more than L8,000 had visited the Web page. We guess the contractor had to d ispose of it in the old-fash­ioned way-as scrap metal.

Nestled into the base ofBarn Bluff is the L882 lime kiln built by entrepreneur O. A. Carlson. Lime ki lns, used to heat limestone to extreme temperatures to produce the lime necessary for mortar, were instrumental in Red \Ving's economic and industrial devel· opment. The 500 barrels o( lime a day produced by the kilt'I also contributed to the built heritage of Minnesota. Today, the Carlson kiln, within chc Red Wing park system, is in need of basic stabilization measures and suffers from a lack of public visibility and awareness. Burdened by a lack of re-use solutions and severe• ly limited funding, the ciry is unable to sufficiently maintain and interpret this site, so symbolic of Minnesota's industrial past.
