DO NO HARM We listen quite a while before we get to the “punch line” of the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many dif-ferent people. It is scrip-ture’s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus’ teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our oppor-tunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to.Copyright © J. RESSI FISH FRY NEWS—Due to the broken boiler and no heat in the Garden Room, the Ressi Fish Fry will be moving to St. Catherine’s McCann Hall this year. For this year, we will continue to call it Ressi Fish Fry/bbcatholic Fish Fry so that our cus-tomers will know it is the same great fish, pierogies, mac’n cheese, and haluski that they love. Please help us to spread the word. If you would like to vol-unteer for this year’s Fish Fry, please contact Debbie Brust at 412-531-9227. We will still appreciate any homemade desserts from our parishioners. Thanks for your understanding. CAMPITI’S BENEFIT DAY—Tuesday, March 5 from 11:00am to 9:00pm. Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 24, 2019 Merciful and gracious is the

LORD, slow to anger and abounding

in kindness. — Psalm 103:8

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

When the Roman Empire turned a favorable eye toward the once-persecuted Christians, among the effects was a population explosion in the baptismal font, as Christian sympathizers stepped from the shadows. With more and more people becoming Christians, laws were passed to

protect Sunday as a work-free day. Soon, it became possible to celebrate Mass later in the morning, rather than the older custom of gathering before dawn to cele-brate Eucharist. Amazingly, despite the increasing numbers of Christians, there was great resistance to adding to the

number of worship events; the Eucharist that began as a few friends around a table soon was transformed into a more formal event with throngs crowding a large hall. All the Christians in a city or town would gather around the bishop for the one Sunday Eucharist, and only when the crowds became unmanageable was there an impulse to divide the assembly by splitting off a new bishop and flock. Now, sixteen hundred years later, many parishes see a need to trim or combine Mass schedules. This is often seen as tough surgery. Yet our forebears in the faith would see it as a gain: a filling up of the Eucharist with a large and vigorous assembly, a fullness of ministry, an opportunity to make the Church more fully visible and stronger for service.—James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DESTROYING ONE’S ENEMIES Am I not destroying my enemies when I make

friends of them? —Abraham Lincoln

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — David found Saul in a deep sleep, but would not harm him (1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23). Psalm — The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading — We shall bear the image of the heav-enly Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-49). Gospel — Give to everyone who asks of you. Lend ex-pecting nothing back (Luke 6:27-38). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Friday: World Day of Prayer; First Friday Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday FOCUS: Jesus is never hidden from us. The Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign of his relationship to God. Jesus refused. He had been giving them signs since he started his public ministry, but no number of cures, no miracu-lous feedings, not even testimony from John the Baptist would suffice. Those who do not want to see, never will see. But Jesus, and his relationship to the Father, is never hidden from us. We do not have to look hard, but simply open our eyes of faith. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS—Parents, if this is your first child to be baptized, you are required to attend a Pre-Baptism Class. The next session is scheduled for Tues-day, March 5 at 7:00pm in St. Pius X Church. Regis-tration is required by calling the Parish Office at 412-531-2135.

Baptized in the Lord

Natalia Joaunah Gonzalez Let us remember in our prayers the newly baptized, the parents

and the godparents as together they begin

their journey with Christ SIGN OF PEACE—Due to the cold and flu season, please refrain from shaking hands at the Sign of Peace. A gesture, smile or just a nod of the head to the people nearby is acceptable.

REMEMBRANCE: Our prayers and sympathy are extended to the family and friends of those who have passed away this past week:

All of our parishes are in need of Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers and Altar Servers. Serving in these minis-tries requires no more time than going to Mass. In the be-ginning, there is one class for Protecting All Children and paperwork. Some training and you are on your way to serving your congregation and the Lord. Call the parish office at 412-531-2135 if you would like to participate in any of these ministries. CONGRATULATIONS to Brandon Karafilis for achieving High Honors at Central Catholic High School for the first semester. CONGRATULATIONS to the following students of Oakland Catholic High School for achieving Highest Honors : Brianna Stitt and Chloe Cox. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS—Melanie Rambish, James Zrust, and Andie Gaetano. THANK YOU!—St. Pamphilus “Night at the Races” was a huge success. We appreciate all of the donations. Thank you to all of the volunteers and, especially, to all of the pa-trons who helped us to make over $10,700 in profits. We could not have done it with-out all of you!

Do to Others as You Would Have Them Do to You – This sentence taken from today’s Gospel is usually referred to as the “Golden Rule.” Calling this life maxim golden would suggest that some-

thing about it is precious. In fact, it highlights that each and every human life is precious. The dignity and respect that the Golden Rule sets forth applies to all human life as we work to love and support the unborn, the elderly and everyone in between. While we all have those people in our lives who are harder to love than others, Jesus calls us to a higher way of living, sacrificing and even suffering in order to love another as we expect to be loved ourselves. On Mission for The Church Alive! invites us to live out the Golden Rule in the context of our parish groupings: to welcome as we would expect to be welcomed; to encour-age as we would expect to be encouraged. We are all pre-cious to God and we should make the most of the oppor-tunities we have to let each other know it. Visit onmis-sionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

COMMUNITY NEWS Relationship (noun): the state of being connected. For many persons, the desire to know God is innate. However, most of us struggle with how to connect with God in a meaningful way. Alpha is a great way to reawaken and enliven your relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Many participants re-ported that Alpha has brought them to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with the Trinity. They also said that Alpha has made them feel connected to others in the parish in a significant way. Alpha begins with a meal, followed by a short video, and a small group discussion about topics set forth in the videos. There is no fee for the Alpha course. Registration is being taken at St. Mary of the Mount 412-381-0212, Prince of Peace 412-481-8380, or https:///bbcatholic.com/alpha-amp-formed. Join us on Wednesday, March 20 from 6:00 to 8:15pm as we begin a new ten-week Alpha course.

You are sure to enjoy the foot-tapping rhythms and high-energy dances, as we take you from Canaan to Egypt and home again, on the amazing journey of this dreamer.
