Brook MeadowsWhat is the Main Goal inLittle League Baseball?
SubmittedbyRobinCox What should your main objective be incoaching, teaching or parenting a LittleLeaguer? Is theobjective towin?IwouldsayYesbutalsoNo.Winningisimportantbutitisaresult.Results,especiallyinsportsaremanytimesdeterminedbyactionsoutsideofourcontrol. In Little League there can be a widevarianceofskillsamongplayersonthesameteam. But there is one common denominatorthatallplayersneedinincreasingmeasure.(includingHighSchool,CollegeandMajors)Canyouguess?
That one thing is Confidence. As the saying goes, Confidence is everything! But confidence in what? Their arm, their bat, theirglove?Giventhatallofthosecanand will fail what they need is increasedconfidence in who they are. Manyteamsgiveoutstarsfortheplayerscapsafteragameforwinning.ButIsuggestgiving out stars or rewards at practice fordoing the little things right. Especiallyputting an emphases on “hustle” whenmakingtheextraeffortfor tryingtostopaball(whethertheymadetheplayornot)orasabatterhangingtoughwithapitcherbyfouling off many pitches (even though hemayeventuallystrikeout)orshowinggreatattitudeor encouragement toward a fellowteammate. What does this do? It buildsconfidence in themselves. They should be instantlyrewardedfordoingandbeingtheirbest. Lastly, as their confidence increases, you asacoach,teacherandparentarelookingforonething.Itiscalleda“breakout.”Abreakoutcanoccurinpracticeorinagame.Itmaybeabreakout“atbat”whenabattergetsahitafteralongslump.Itmightoccuronaplayhehasneverbeenabletoaccomplishuntilnowwithhisincreasedhustle.Itisthatmomentwhen he realizes, yes I can do this! It is that memorable point when he comes off the field smiling so big, it makes the whole seasonworthitwhetheryourteamis10-0or0-10. But remember, a “breakout” in confidence isnotlimitedtosportsandlittleleaguers.
