The past year has been one filled with blessings and growth, and I am humbled by your generosity.

It is indeed an honor to lead the alumni and development operations for The College at Brockport, and this past year has truly been an amazing one as we continue to build a culture of philanthropy and alumni connectedness.

We are working to promote student philanthropy, asking our current students to pay it forward before they even call Brockport their alma mater. And once they graduate, we are engaging our alumni in our new Young Alumni Program. We also are reaching out to alumni across the US and increasing our national presence on the Alumni Association Board and Brockport Foundation Board.

Foundation Board Chair Diane McCue ’77 is helping to lead that effort. I hope you’ll enjoy reading our story in this year’s Annual Report on Diane and her husband, Jerry. The McCues are generous benefactors of the College and share our passion for student success.

The Foundation also is supporting President John R. Halstead’s goal of increasing the College’s visibility on a national level. We seek to do this by engaging with our donors to create more scholarships and faculty excellence funds and to support programs that encourage student engagement, such as the Institute for Engaged Learning.

We are truly grateful for all of your support, whether it’s for academics, athletics, the arts, scholarship or unrestricted.

Thank you for all that you have done for the College in 2011. I look forward to collaborating with you in 2012!

Warmest regards,

Roxanne JohnstonVice President of Advancement President, Brockport Foundation

The theme of my annual Faculty and Staff Convocation Address this past August was “Thinking and Acting Strategically.” This was an appropriate title in many ways, not the least of which was due to the July 1, 2011, launch of our new Strategic Plan: 2011-2016. This latest iteration of our dynamic strategic plan has as its core message a focus on the student experience with the expectation that important indicators of success – graduation rates, retention rates and student satisfaction – will rise. This is also in keeping with some of the benchmarks just recently promulgated by SUNY and our goals have some “crosswalks” with The Power of SUNY, but this is our plan driving our bright future.

Thinking and acting strategically also correlates to the allocation of resources and the hiring of key positions. Examples from the latter half of 2011 include Dr. Dan Petree, founding dean for the School of Business Administration and Economics, and Dr. Jimmy Jung, assistant vice president for enrollment management. These are indeed two strategic hires that will advance our College during the coming years and pay benefit for our valued students.

For those of you that haven’t visited our campus in recent years, you might want to plan a visit during next year’s Homecoming Weekend. In addition to the normal reunion festivities, the ribbon cutting and dedication for the Special Events Recreation Center is slated for September 14. This game-changing facility promises to provide world-class academic, recreational, and athletic facilities to students, faculty, staff, and the Greater Rochester community. It will also help to drive the economy of western New York and attract countless visitors and exciting venues to our campus.

On the financial front, several years of continual and deep budget cuts were slightly off-set by the passing of NYSUNY2020 legislation, which provided a rational five-year tuition plan. We will continue to work with SUNY, Governor Cuomo and our elected officials to advocate for The College at Brockport and ensure public higher education remains a high priority in this state.

Last year in this letter I wrote that I felt we were on the cusp of our College’s next phase. With Brockport continuing to rise in national rankings for quality and value and the launch of our latest strategic plan, we are indeed poised for even greater success. I can’t underestimate, however, the importance of private support to achieving the goals and plans we have set in motion. I want to offer my personal thanks for the leadership and hard work of our volunteer Brockport Foundation. Past, current, and future students of The College at Brockport have and will receive outstanding educational opportunities otherwise unattainable without the commitment of our dedicated Foundation, and to all of the many friends of Brockport who support our vision.

With gratitude,

John R. Halstead, Ph.D.President

The Mccue ScholarShip

Giving Back:

By Mary E. McCrank ’06

Three years ago, a young Brockport alumnus working as a captain in the US Army Nurse Corps in Washington, DC, created a scholarship for nursing majors following in her footsteps.

Racheal Mastin Wood ’05, who received her bachelor’s degree cum laude in nursing and biological sciences, knew what it was like to receive financial support while

studying in a program that is known as one of the most intensive and competitive at The College at Brockport.

After all, she and her twin sister, Bethany Mastin ’04, who received her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology, were the first recipients of the McCue Scholarship, which was created in 2002 at Brockport by Diane ’77 and Jerry McCue. When the McCues discovered that the twins from Dansville, NY, were both

qualified recipients for the scholarship, they opted to pay the full tuition for four years for both scholars.

The influence the McCues had on Racheal led her to become a young philanthropist, annually awarding $1,000 a year to a nursing student. And this measure of generosity is all the McCues ever hoped for when they established their award.

“The defining moment was when one of our students started her own scholarship,” said Jerry. “We knew that our scholarship was getting a real rate of return because now the College was getting a scholarship from the new generation.”

Diane agrees.“I think that it’s really important that we build that culture of philanthropy,” said Diane. “You look at the example of Racheal. We did that for her and said, ‘We don’t want anything. We just want you to pay it forward.’ ”

When Diane was an undergraduate at Brockport, the Brockport Foundation had not been formed. Scholarships were few, and philanthropy at the State University of New York schools was virtually non-

existent. Giving back to a school alma mater was unheard of.

“I didn’t even know that it was possible,” said Diane, who now serves as chair of the Brockport Foundation Board of Directors and is playing a key position as the College undertakes the most ambitious comprehensive campaign in its history. Diane retired in March as one of the highest-ranking female executives at Eastman Kodak Co. As World Wide General Manager and Corporate Vice President (Global Printing Plates), she even enjoyed the corner office once occupied by George Eastman. Jerry serves as First Vice

Now, the McCues have made it their mission to support the education of young scholars.

Another recipient of their scholarship, Amanda L. Wood ’10/’11, opted to go on to graduate school at Brockport after receiving her bachelor’s degree in accounting magna cum laude in 2010. The McCues picked up the fifth year of tuition for Amanda, and in 2011 the Painted Post, NY, native received her master’s degree in accounting.

Current recipient Stacy Seyboth is in her sophomore year at Brockport and intends to major in nursing. When the McCues were notified that a $300-per-year tuition increase had been approved for SUNY schools, they immediately agreed to pick up the extra cost, once again paying for the full tuition of their latest scholarship recipient.

Diane said her Brockport education prepared her for the various positions she

held at Kodak, because she learned how to work in teams and with people she didn’t know.

“To me, that was one of the best things I learned — how to work in a team, get a project done and learn other people’s best practices, she said. “It makes you open your mind to the ways other people think and approach a problem.”

Jerry added, “The thing that is most important is making sure that the recipients become very productive members of society soon after they graduate.”

The first in her family to attend college, with her older sister following suit, Diane grew up in the close-knit community of Gowanda, NY, outside of Buffalo.

“I don’t think I ever remember there was ever a choice,” she said. “We were going to go to college.”

Her mother worked in the business office at the local high school, and her father sold insurance and worked for the US Postal Service. Her paternal grandfather was a painter and paternal grandmother worked in the laundry business. Her maternal grandfather was a farmer and road construction worker and maternal grandmother was a tax collector.

“I had enormous support from the women in my family to do this,” said Diane, adding that her grandmothers and parents helped pay part of her tuition.

“They were always there with some dollars to help me get through school. Not that they could always help me academically,” she said.

A native of South Glens Falls, NY, Jerry’s mother was a nurse and his father was an electrical engineer.

Diane said her college experience was different than Jerry’s since she was a first-generation student.

“I think I was a little bit lost. You’ve got to find your own way. I think by the time I was

there in my second year, I knew I wanted to find a curriculum where I could find a job,” said Diane, who double majored in computer science and business. “I was good at it and liked it and knew from the older kids that they were getting jobs. I thought, ‘OK, I am going in this direction, and I can get a job.’ ”

“Going to school at Brockport, Kodak

was the icon,” Diane said. Yet, the year she graduated, Kodak wasn’t recruiting, so she headed to Dayton, Ohio, to work for NCR. The next year, when Kodak resumed recruiting Brockport alumni, Diane would end up making a move back home to work for a company where she made her lifelong career and provided her with the opportunity to travel the globe.

Jerry goes on to say, “You have a quality of life that you never expected, so there’s a social responsibility to share the knowledge, share the wealth and to give back.”

Diane said one of the best experiences she has had as a Brockport donor is meeting the students, seeing them come in as freshmen and watching them mature into graduates.

“It’s an honor to be on the Foundation Board and to find ways to support the College and the students,” she said.

“We’re all desiring the same thing,” she said of the Foundation Board — student success and helping to build that success.

“You have a quality of life that you never expected, so there’s a social responsibility to share the knowledge, share the wealth and to give back.” — Jerry

“To be deemed the winner of the McCue Scholarship instills confidence and motivation for me to strive and make my dreams of becoming a nurse a reality in the near future,” said Seyboth. “I plan to make the most of this unique opportunity by aiming high and settling for nothing less than my very best.”

Year in Review Highlights

July 2010• The Rochester Educational Opportunity Center held a

groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility on Chestnut Street in downtown Rochester. REOC, sponsored, in part, by the College, is the only tuition-free adult training facility in the area. The new building was purchased in 2008 and renovations were completed in 2011. The five-story building will house the adult academic and career training programs. The facility includes state-of-the art classrooms, a 500-seat multipurpose area, a cosmetology salon and culinary bistro.

• More than 30 Rochester-area girls enrolled in middle school participated in the Leadership Academy for Girls, a residential camp focused on leadership development for success in high school, college, careers and life. The camp, which for many is their first exposure to higher education, sends the message that a college degree is accessible and achievable for those who desire it. The Rochester Women’s Giving Circle Fund at Rochester Area Community Foundation provided a grant to fund 10 of the participants.

• Iskra Alex Alexandrov, the College’s director of broadcast operations and prize-winning classical accordionist, was featured in an Eastman School of Music Summer Concert Series. Alexandrov served as concertmaster for the National Accordion Orchestra of Bulgaria, who traveled widely throughout Europe before escaping Communist Bulgaria in the 1980s.

August• The Princeton Review selected Brockport as one of 218

institutions receiving its “Best in the Northeast” designation. The College was profiled in The Best Northeastern Colleges: 2011 Edition. The education services company surveys students to rate their own schools on several issues and answer questions about themselves, their fellow students and campus life.

• The College was ranked 67th among regional universities in the North region in the 2011 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” guide, an exclusive ranking of more than 1,400 schools nationwide. The US News staff ranks colleges based on, among other categories, the academic profile of incoming students, graduation rates, percentage of alumni who donate to their alma maters and the school’s reputation among peers.

• The College was named a “Military Friendly School” by GI Jobs magazine for the second year in a row. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.

• The College welcomed 1,065 first-year students for a total enrollment of 8,650. The freshmen participated in a Saturday of Service, rolling up their sleeves to perform community service. On Sunday, the College officially welcomed the freshmen, as well as 900 new transfer students during Convocation.

September• Television, Broadway and film actress and activist, Phylicia

Rashad delivered the keynote address at the College’s 10th Annual Diversity Conference. Rashad delivered a poetic 20-minute talk about the crucial role a semester in Mexico played in her understanding the meaning of diversity. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, who attended the talk, stated the conference is a “marvelous hallmark of SUNY’s commitment to diversity.”

• Constitution Day 2010 at Brockport brought celebration for 66 new US citizens from 34 different countries who took the formal Oath of Allegiance during naturalization ceremonies on campus.

• Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium was christened during a Homecoming football game to recognize the founder of the International Special Olympics who brought the Games to campus in 1979. Formerly known as Special Olympics Stadium, the 10,000-seat facility — the largest on-campus stadium of its kind for an NCAA Division III college — was re-dedicated in a half-time ceremony during the Brockport-College of New Jersey Homecoming football game on Sept. 25, which was the first annual international Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day.

October• The second annual Men of Color Summit brought more than

60 students from area colleges and the Rochester City School District to campus. Summit workshops, revolving around the theme “The Measure of a Man: Mind, Body and Spirit,” included sessions on mentoring, health, career and personal relationships. The Summit, is collaboration between the College’s Office of Community Development and The College Doctor, LLC, it is intended to give men of color the opportunity to connect, learn and find support from successful men of color who have successfully navigated the rigors of education and professional careers.

• The College received a $1.5 million grant to renovate a science building from the National Science Foundation. The grant will be used to renovate Smith Hall, a classroom and laboratory building housing the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Computational Science, as well as an aquaculture laboratory used by faculty and students in the Department of Environmental Science and Biology.

November• Pulitzer Prize winning poet C.K. Williams delivered the

College’s 7th annual Writer’s Voice lecture to a packed audience. Williams delivered a moving and at times humorous reading, providing context and background for many of his poems. He has published many books of poetry, including Repair, which was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize; The Singing, which won the National Book Award for 2003; and Flesh and Blood, the winner of the National Book Critics Circle Prize in 1987. The Writer’s Voice lecture is sponsored by M&T Bank.

• The College named its basketball facility within the Tuttle Athletics Complex in honor of former basketball All-Americans James “Jim” Vlogianitis ’94 and John Vlogianitis ’95. The twins, who led Brockport to the 1994 SUNYAC Basketball Championship — its first since the mid-1970s — and were instrumental in the program’s turnaround to a conference power over the last 15 years, made a significant gift to the Brockport Foundation that allowed the College to name the facility in their honor.

• Members of the Student Social Work Organization and supporters camped out overnight on campus to raise funds for the House of Mercy, a local homeless shelter during Tent City Project. This national initiative is sponsored twice each year on the campus. Brockport students, employers and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity and others reside in cardboard boxes for the two-day event. The participants, who set up their boxes in the center of campus, aim to raise awareness for homelessness in Rochester and beyond.

December• Library, Information and Technology Services held its first

Electronic Gadget Expo in Drake Memorial Library, drawing 120 faculty, staff and students ready to explore education applications and how technology can be used in and outside of the classroom. Exhibits featured Kindles, Nooks, iPads, SmartPens, Webcams, digital cameras, Skype and more.

• For the 26th year, the College sponsored Holiday Helping Hands to provide goods to underprivileged families in the area. Faculty, staff and students “adopted” 13 families, offering them groceries, clothing, toys and household items.

• The College received the largest ever gift in support of the sciences from Professor Emeritus J. Emory Morris. Dr. Morris made a gift commitment of $1.1 million to endow a scholarship in the sciences and to expand funding available to support opportunities for undergraduate students to pursue research in chemistry and biochemistry during the summer break. Dr. Morris has been a long-time advocate of student research, founding the Morris Fellowships for Summer Research in Chemistry in 1988.

11

January 2011• WinterSession ’11 offered the chance for students to partake in

study abroad experiences designed as part of the curriculum. Six Brockport undergraduate and graduate students traveled to Antarctica, the southernmost continent on earth. History Professor James Spiller, PhD, led a two-week trip to this forbidding, icy continent. After completing a fall semester course about the history, politics and critical environmental research in Antarctica, students were well prepared to directly experience the glaciers and Antarctic wildlife that are environmental bellwethers of global climate change. And a Brockport communication class got hands-on experience in the history of civil rights and America while helping to restore a piece of history during a service learning trip to Memphis, Tennessee. Students performed service work at the Zion Cemetery Project, by helping to reclaim an abandoned 16-acre black cemetery that contains the graves of 23,000 people, some of whom were slaves. They also took field trips to civil rights sites in Memphis; Jackson, Mississippi; and in the Mississippi Delta region. The capstone experience was a visit to the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final speech, the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was assassinated, and observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Memphis.

• The College was ranked for the fourth consecutive year among Kiplinger’s “100 Best Values in Public Colleges,” a list that ranks schools based on a combination of top-flight academics and affordable costs. The College ranked 63rd. Kiplinger 100 were ranked according to academic quality, including admission and retention rates, student-faculty ratios and four- and six-year graduation rates, as well as on cost and financial aid.

February• Scholar Eddie Glaude, Jr., PhD, delivered a passionate talk

for the College’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Lecture. Glaude, chair of the Center for African American Studies and the William S. Tod Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, is widely regarded as one of the brightest young intellectuals in the US today. Glaude stated that obscured in the celebration of his life, King’s deradicalization makes us forget his fight for the dignity and standing of every human being. If King were alive today, Glaude told the audience, “He would come to unsettle us, challenge us.”

• The Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, granted re-accreditation to the following programs in the College’s Department of Counselor Education: Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling and College Counseling.

• Farida Jalalzai, PhD, ’96, visited Brockport to deliver a lecture, “Women, Presidents and Prime Ministers: A Global Perspective and Implications for Democracy.” The talk was sponsored by the American Democracy Project and the Department of Political Science and International Studies in honor of the College’s 175th Anniversary. Jalalzai’s research analyzes the representation and behavior of women and minorities in politics and the role of gender in the political arena. Her work focuses on female national leaders, gender and campaign coverage, and the behavior of political widows compared to the husbands they replaced in Congress.

12

March• The College held the exhibit “E.E. Cummings: Painter and Poet”

in the Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery. Brockport’s repository is the largest single collection of artworks by noted poet Cummings. When the works were donated to the College in the late 1970s, the collection of oils, watercolors and sketches were in need of various degrees of restoration. To date, 51 of the 72 works in the collection have been restored.

• The College held its third annual Jazz Day featuring The Roberto Occhipinti Quartet. The day long event also included a free master class. Jazz Day is supported, in part, by Foundation Board Member Marc Iacona, the executive director of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival. Iacona, who is also CEO of Simcona Electronics Corporation, believes that “music education is critical to understanding the intricacies and nuances of jazz. Musicians and non-musicians alike can develop a passion and deeper appreciation for what they’re hearing through music education.”

• The College’s Department of Dance presented DANCE/Strasser, featuring choreography by undergraduate and graduate students in its nationally renowned dance program. The concert featured newly created works by graduate and undergraduate choreographers and selected by an adjudication committee that included students and faculty artistic directors.

April• The College installed a time capsule to give future students a

taste of what the Brockport experience was like in 2011. Part of the College’s yearlong celebration of its 175th anniversary, the entire process — from selecting items to be placed in the capsule to developing the program for installation — was organized by students in the Special Event Planning course, taught by Lynda Sperazza, PhD. The locked time capsule will remain on display in the Seymour Union Lounge until it is opened in celebration of the College’s 250th anniversary in 2086.

• Four undergraduate students were honored by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher with the 2011 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. The four students honored were: Stephanie Geer ’11, a Chemistry major from Binghamton, NY; Danielle Gentile ’11, a double major in Psychology and Health Science from Lakewood, NY; Paul Giglio ’11, an International Business and Economics major from Blasdell, NY; and Emily Salvas ’11, an Interdisciplinary Arts major in the Childhood Inclusive Education Certification Program from Rochester, NY.

• For 28 years, Scholars Day has focused the spotlight on the academic and creative accomplishments of the College’s best and the brightest. Scholars Day ’11 featured a record number of presentations (323) of research and creative work by nearly 660 students, faculty and staff.

• Four Brockport alumni who found success in Hollywood visited campus to share their experiences with the campus community. William Fichtner ’78, Jesse Goins ’74, Stu Krieger ’73 and Paul Pape ’74 all shared stories about their experiences as students at Brockport and as professionals in Hollywood.

13

May• Ruth Reichl, author of four best-selling memoirs and former

editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine, received the Art of Fact Award from The Writers Forum. “Food reflects and is a reflection of our times,” said Reichl, one of the country’s finest food writers and memoirists. Reichl’s best-selling memoirs include For You Mom, Finally; Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise; Comfort Me with Apples and Tender at the Bone. She co-produced PBS’s Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie and hosted Gourmet’s Adventures with Ruth. The Art of Fact Award event is sponsored in part by M&T Bank.

• The College appointed Daniel L. Petree, PhD, an experienced dean and program builder, to lead its new School of Business Administration and Economics. Petree, who previously served as the inaugural dean of the College of Business at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, is steering the transformation of Brockport’s Department of Business Administration and Economics into a robust school that accents the distinctiveness of its academic programs.

• The College welcomed the Class of 2011 into the ranks of its alumni during a soggy but spirited ceremony in Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium. William Heyen, emeritus professor of English and an internationally known poet who has authored more than 30 books, was the honorary degree recipient and Commencement speaker. “Create, add to the world’s store of joy, don’t just sit back, make of daily life a responsibility, what poet Charles Olsen calls ‘a dignity and a sufficiency.’ We need your ideas and vitality and good works. Be proud of yourself, believe in yourself,” Heyen said.

June• SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher recognized 296 faculty and

staff members, including eight from Brockport, for outstanding professional achievement. Brockport’s honorees were:

• Excellence in Teaching: Andrea Ciliotta-Rubery, associate professor, Political Science and International Studies; Alisa James, associate professor, Kinesiology, Sport Studies and Physical Education; Hasnat Baban, professor, Business Administration and Economics

• Excellence in Librarianship: Debra Ames, librarian, Library, Information and Technology Services

The Gloria Mattera Heritage Society is so named to honor Dr. Gloria Mattera ’52/’55. A native of Rochester and a Brockport alumna, Dr. Mattera is responsible for groundbreaking initiatives in the education of the children of migrant farmworkers in our region. A loyal Brockport alum, Dr. Mattera served on several Alumni Association committees. In 1986, she received the Alumni Association’s highest honor and was inducted into the Brockport Alumni Association Hall of Heritage.

Her untimely death in 1988 left a void for everyone who was touched by her kindness and generosity. But her enduring commitment to students and her far-sighted planning created an endowment that will last forever. Her planned gift endowed a student scholarship fund that will provide the means to continue changing lives — one student at a time.

Planned Giving Societies

The Benefits of Planned GivingYou have the power to make a lasting impact on Brockport students through a planned gift. A variety of planned charitable arrangements let you leave a lasting legacy of support and, at the same time, reduce the tax burden on your estate and maximize your estate’s value to your beneficiaries. You don’t have to be a certain age or very wealthy to plan a gift that changes students’ lives. To learn more about how you can make a lasting difference for Brockport and become a member of the Gloria Mattera Heritage Society, go to www.brockport.edu/giving/guide/mattera or call Brad Schreiber, executive director of development and alumni relations, at (585) 395-2451.

Endowed and Annual Scholarships

One of the main tenets of Brockport’s mission is to offer a high quality education that is affordable for our students. Yet for many, cost is still a barrier. Private scholarships, both restricted and endowed, can make a critical difference. A scholarship may mean that students can forego part-time jobs and give their full attention to their studies; it may open the door to a study abroad experience; or for some, it may make a college education a reality — not just a dream. Through the Brockport Foundation, generous individuals, foundations and corporations bring education within reach for many of our students.

In 2010-11, the Brockport Foundation awarded over scholarships totaling $414,332. The Foundation also provides the College with $275,000 annually to support the Extraordinary Academic Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships based on overall academic achievement.

Listed below are the endowed and annual scholarships that make it possible for Brockport students to achieve their educational goals.

Fall Classic a Success

Largest FieldThis year’s Fall Classic golf tournament to support student success through the Extraordinary Academic Scholarship Program had a gross profit of more than $55,000. The tournament, hosted by the Brockport Foundation, drew a full field of 128 golfers to Irondequoit Country Club in Pittsford on Sept. 12. It was the largest field since the tournament began in 2005.

Mascot & SunshineAfter a gorgeous day on the course — during which the sun shined on golfers and temperatures hit 80 degrees — participants wrapped up the day at the clubhouse, buying raffle tickets and mingling with Ellsworth the Golden Eagle, who debuted his new look at the reception. Extraordinary Academic Scholarship recipient Amy Dorman ’12 addressed the audience at the dinner and awards ceremony. Kathy Halstead joined President John R. Halstead, who captained a foursome, for dinner again this year.

Foundation Board SupportCharlie Nesbitt, Rob Pepe and Michael Doyle steered this year’s event to success. They were joined as captains by Diane McCue and Marc Iacona. Staples sponsored a foursome and was a Cart Sponsor thanks to the generosity of Joe Doody. And Turner Construction donated tickets to a New York Yankees game thanks to Nick Billotti.

Long before he began his lifelong career teaching at The College at Brockport, J. Emory Morris, PhD, professor emeritus, was in love with the field of chemistry. Throughout his 42 years in the College’s Department of Chemistry, Dr. Morris was known for his commitment to sharing his knowledge and igniting the imaginations of his students as they studied and conducted research.

Today, Dr. Morris is multiplying that commitment a million times over — make that $1.1 million times over. He is to endow the Morris Opportunity Scholarships for the Study of Science with a $1.1 million gift, which will expand funding to support undergraduate students as they pursue research in chemistry and biochemistry at the College, including full-time summer research.

Dr. Morris believes the foundation for academic success is preparatory coursework before entering college. These scholarships are intended to encourage students to

pursue the sciences. In addition to the student scholarships, a portion of the gift will be used for annual awards to faculty research mentors.

The gift is the latest in a long history of support by Dr. Morris, including the Morris Fellowships for Summer Research in Chemistry, founded in 1988, which allow students to spend summers collaborating

with professors on research projects. In 2008, Dr. Morris pledged $100,000 in the form of a three-year challenge to chemistry alumni and supporters of the sciences to bolster the fellowship fund. This spring, the College successfully matched Dr. Morris’ $100,000 for a total of $200,000 raised for undergraduate research in chemistry.

5th Annual %President’s Donor Recognition Dinner, April 29, 2011

The College at Brockport celebrated philanthropy with some of its most generous supporters during the fifth annual President’s Donor Recognition Dinner on April 29. The event’s theme, “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” was tied with the College’s 175th anniversary. More than 180 supporters of the College — including alumni, faculty and staff, community members and Brockport Foundation board members — attended the event, making it the largest celebration since the event began in 2007. The Seymour College Union Ballroom was transformed into old Hollywood, with 14-foot chandeliers lining the sides of the room and a massive 5-foot wide chandelier placed above the bar, where guests lined up for champagne. A large photo wall was displayed in the back of the ballroom, highlighting photos of the College throughout the decades. Guests took home a photo book that showed where the College has been and where it is going. The evening was a celebration of philanthropy for the College, which inducted 20 donors into five lifetime giving societies, including the Marguerite Hare Browne Society, Robert E. O’Brien Society, Donald M. Tower Society, Ernest C. Hartwell Circle, Hiel Brockway Society and the Brockport Circle. There were several highlights throughout the evening, including the induction of Chemistry Professor Emeritus J. Emory Morris into the Brockport Circle, which recognizes donors who have made or committed a gift of $1 million or more. President John R. Halstead led the guests in raising their champagne glasses to toast Dr. Morris, while Vice President for Advancement Roxanne Johnston and Brockport Foundation Chair Diane McCue ’77 presented Morris with a commemorative metal bowl designed and crafted by Art Professor Emeritus Thomas Markusen. Other highlights of the evening were the announcement of the Volunteer Service Award. The recipient of this award is kept a secret until the dinner. The recipient has a $1,000 scholarship given in his or her name to a student who exemplifies that same volunteerism as he or she. This year’s Volunteer of the Year was William C. Rock, and the scholarship winner was Emily Marullo ’11. Rock is a distinguished service professor emeritus of the Department of Educational Administration and a Brockport Foundation board member. Kim Ehret, assistant director of donor relations and stewardship, oversaw all aspects of this event, making it one of the College’s most successful donor dinners to date. The College’s Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation (BASC) catered the event. Special contributors included Cold Stone Creamery and Dr. Konstantin Frank.

Thank you for the generous support you’ve already given to the College! We hope we can continue to count on you. Choose the method of giving that suits your needs, and you’ll help us ensure that we continue to offer an extraordinary educational experience for our students.

Make an Annual GiftAn unrestricted gift to the Fund for Brockport gives the College the flexibility to use that money where it’s needed most — most often for scholarships, but also for new programs and initiatives, research, faculty excellence, campus beautification, athletics, and more.

You’re also welcome to designate your gift to a scholarship, an academic department, athletics, dance or any other program you wish to support. Just let us know, and we’ll make sure that your dollars go to work for your favorite programs. To make your gift online, please go to www.brockport.edu/giving/online/gift.

Create an EndowmentAn endowment is an excellent way to leave a lasting legacy. With a minimum gift of $25,000, the Foundation will manage your investment in the College in perpetuity. The earnings on your endowment will fund a scholarship or they can be designated to another area of the College in accordance with your wishes.

Establish a Planned GiftConsider including Brockport in your estate planning by naming the College as beneficiary in your will. This will provide tax advantages for your estate and allow you to show your loyalty to Brockport, without impacting your current finances.

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is another planned giving option. A CGA is an agreement between you and the Brockport Foundation in which you transfer an asset to the Foundation and, in return, the Foundation makes lifetime payments to you. Benefits of a charitable gift annuity can be impressive. You’ll receive an immediate income tax deduction and avoid upfront capital gains tax upon transfer. Visit www.brockport.edu/plannedgiving to learn more.

Honor or Memorialize a Loved OneAny gift may be made in honor of or to memorialize a family member, friend, colleague or favorite faculty member. When you make your gift, just indicate the name of the person you wish to honor on your pledge form, on the online form, www.brockport.edu/giving or call us at (585) 395-2451 to make your gift.
