Cobo Funeral Urns
Each person leaves a personal impression during their life and Cobo Urns are designed to celebrate this individuality.
Each Cobo Urn is designed therefore with a unique form as well as a unique surface finishing.
Cobo Studio creates various sizes of urns for adults and children, as well as keep sake urns and remembrance boxes.
Urns can be special ordered from Cobo Studio. These urns can be personalized if desired using pictures, symbols or
3-dimensional carvings.
Cobo Studio also offers a line of funeral urns for companion pets.
The artist
Colette Bourgoin studied Visual Arts at Moncton University and Ottawa University, with
specialties in painting and sculpture. She later studied ceramic arts at Lycée Technique
Industriel Delafosse in Dakar, Sénégal and also studied with renowned Senegalese potter ,
Alpha Sow during a three year stay in Africa.
Colette has been a member of the Gladstone Clayworks Coop in Ottawa since 2009 where
she teaches pottery and clay work.
In 2010, she founded Cobo Studio.
Raku, is a Japanese word that means felicity or happiness. Raku is also a traditional ceramic firing method developed in Japan during the 16th century when the pieces were destined for the Zen tea ceremony.
The Raku process starts with the preparation of the glaze which is made with various metals such as copper, cobalt or iron. The glazed ceramic pieces are placed in a Raku kiln then rapidly heated up to 1000 degrees C.

Once the required temperature is reached, the pieces are taken out, covered with various flammable materials, and placed in an air-tight metal container.

It is at this stage, in an oxygen-poor environment, that the elements activate to create the characteristic metallic effect of Raku.Pieces fired using the Raku technique are unique and original works of art.

Cobo Studio Urns
During the summer months, Cobo Studio
uses traditional outdoor Japanese and Chinese firing methods.
Saggar is a traditional oriental ceramic technique that creates impressive colours and designs on ceramic pieces without glazing.
Cobo Studio uses a modern version of this ancient technique. Unglazed ceramic pieces are covered with aluminum foil which contains flammable materials.
Pieces are fired to 870 degrees C in a gas kiln. Immediately upon removal they will be covered with various materials to create unpredictable and magnificent patterns on each piece. Finally the pieces are covered in beeswax for protection.

Cobo Studio creates boxes and keep sake urns of various sizes to gather souvenirs of the deceased.
When a loved one passes away, we may feel that we still have something to say to this special person. To help fill this void, we have designed, remembrance and prayer boxes to allow you to create a mourning ritual. Each box is unique but they all have the same goal: to assist you in establishing a special connexion with your loved one and to help you in your grieving process.
Over time, the remembrance box becomes a link to commemorate the deceased as well as a personal space to reflect. Cobo boxes have been designed to help you live this difficult period with serenity.
