DOOR STEP SCHOOL
Vision: To be an instrumental force that brings develop-
ment to children
Mission: All children deserve an education. An alarming
number of India’s urban poor still remain without an opportu-
nity to receive formal education.
Our mission at Door Step School is to bridge this divide, using
innovative programmes that will bring education to these chil-
dren and help them make the transition to literacy and a
brighter future.
Goal: Primary education for all children up to 14 years of
age.
History: Established in Mumbai in 1988, responding to a
massive need for literacy education in slums and corporation
schools. Door Step School built its program to address three
major needs : School enrollment, Education for those not in
school and Retention–to help those in school thrive and stay
in school. Expanding to Pune in 1993, we are constantly
evaluating the educational needs in the community and de-
velop strategies for addressing them. The organization im-
pacts the lives of over 1,00,000 children.

stitute of Hotel Management,

plied Nutrition in Mumbai.

formal education. He is now 23
years old and works as a medical
representative with a Pharma
Company. His income supports
himself and his family.
Our Interventions
School Partnership Project The School Partnership Project is a form of direct interven-
tion with the student body of a formal school for making the
school a place conducive for learning.
Study Class:
Extra academic support for scholastically weak children to
enable them to learn and so prevent them from dropping
out.
Mental Health Project:
Counseling individuals and groups of children to help them
enhance their capacity to cope with a troubling familial issue,
a negative poor behavioral pattern, or a learning disability.
Reading Promotion:
Encouraging children to develop a healthy reading habit and
to explore language beyond text books.
Bus Service: Ensuring that school going children reach
school on time thus increasing regularity & decreasing the
dropout rate.
Other supportive extracurricular activities include workshops, excursions, library services and competitions.
School On Wheels The School on Wheels (SoW), a bus designed as a mobile
class room is an effective strategy to reach out to the most
unreached groups of out-of-school children i.e. street children
and pavement dwellers. It also acts as an emergency class
room where space is a constraint.
Non formal education classes are run on School on Wheels
and an attempt is made to mainstream the child once an ex-
pected level is achieved. Substance abuse and other health
related issues, social awareness, etc. are addressed along
with imparting literacy on School on Wheels.
In a day, 4 classes of 2.5 hours each are run catering to
approx. 25 out of school children per class per location.
Door Step School is a pioneer in initiating this project in Mum-
bai in the year 1998. Starting with 1 SoW in South Mumbai,
Door Step School currently runs 5 SoWs in different parts of
Mumbai. One bus travels to 4 locations in a day thus annually
reaching out to over 500 children.
The School Bus Service run through School on Wheels has
brought down drop out rate of BMC or formal school going
children and has helped in sustaining them in schools.
