El Carnaval de Barranquilla es la fiesta de creación de un pueblo que año tras año se reúne para poner en escena un teatro de tradición que desborda en imaginación, música, baile y alegría.

Esta celebración colectiva, descubre sus raíces en una multiplicidad de manifestaciones culturales que se conjugaron en la cotidianidad de los diversos grupos humanos que poblaron el Caribe colombiano.

En un encuentro entre lo sagrado y lo profano, lo rural y lo urbano, el pasado y el presente, el Carnaval invierte los roles sociales, el orden de las cosas y la imperante cotidianidad cede, para dar paso a nuevas realidades marcadas por la libertad, la espontaneidad, la risa y la locura.

The  Carnaval de Barranquilla  is a celebration of a town that year by year unites to set the scene for a theatre of tradition that brims in imagination, music, joy, and dance.

This collective celebration discovers its roots in the multiple cultural manifestations that combined in the quotidian of the diverse groups that populated the Colombian Caribbean coast.

It is an encounter between the sacred and profane; the rural and urban; the past and the present. The  Carnaval  reverses social roles, the matters of order, and the impertinent day-to-day cedes, to give way to new realities marked by freedom, spontaneity, laughter, and madness.

PATRIMONIO HERITAGE

El Carnaval de Barranquilla tiene tal riqueza cultural, que hoy cuenta con una doble designación: Patrimonio de la Nación, condición otorgada por el congreso Nacional de Colombia el 26 de Noviembre de 2001, y Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad, titulo concedido por la UNESCO en París, el 7 de noviembre del 2003.

Durante el Carnaval, la ciudad se convierte en el escenario, se vive una muestra folclórica rica en variedad, tradición, ingenio y espontaneidad. Es una temporada de fiestas que comienza desde el mes de enero hasta finalizar el martes de Carnaval, que precede al Miércoles de Ceniza, con innumerables eventos, en los que participan todos por igual, sin distingos de raza, credos o condiciones sociales.

Con remotos orígenes en el Carnaval europeo, el Carnaval de Barranquilla es una fiesta con identidad propia y con más de un siglo de tradición.

Su estructura definitiva obedece a los múltiples haberes culturales que hicieron que una celebración europea se convierta en un producto de un mestizaje fecundo y creativo, resultado de la coexistencia de varios pueblos, especialmente el indígena, el europeo y el africano, que aportaron todas aquellas manifestaciones de música, danzas, disfraces, máscaras, y toda la parafernalia.

The Carnaval de Barranquilla is a cultural demonstration of such importance that it has been granted a double designation: Heritage of the Nation, granted by the National Congress of Colombia on November 26, 2001ñ and Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, title granted by UNESCO in Paris, on November 7, 2003.

During the Carnaval the city becomes a stage brimmed with cultural expressions that are diverse, traditional, ingenious, and spontaneous. It is a season of festivities that commences in the month of January closes on ‘Carnaval Tuesday’, the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Catholic Lent. The Carnaval has innumerable events, in which everyone participates without restrictions of race, creed or social condition.

Regardless of the its European origins, the Carnaval de Barranquilla is a celebration which possesses its own identity and with over a century of tradition.

Its defined structure is due to the multiple cultural backgrounds that allowed an European celebration to transform into a product of a creative cultural blend. It is a result of the coexistence of various peoples, especially the indigenous, European, and African; that provided their manifestations of music, dances, costumes, masks, and paraphernalia.

Barranquilla es la capital del departamento del Atlántico, situada en la Costa del Caribe Colombiano, al norte de sur América, entre las ciudades de Santa Marta y Cartagena. Esta ciudad es la más alegre y festiva de Colombia.

Este centro urbano regional que, desde el siglo XIX, recibe migraciones que han enriquecido sus costumbres y tradiciones festivas. Es una ciudad industrial, portuaria y comercial, donde se unen la cultura y la historia para ofrecer diferentes alternativas de disfrute, que van desde un baile popular, su exquisita gastronomía, joyas arquitectónicas y su máxima celebración el Carnaval de Barranquilla.

El espíritu acogedor, espontáneo y cálido de su gente, invitan a propios y extraños a contagiarse de su arte y talento, expresados en el diseño, las artes, la música y sus letras, que convierten a esta ciudad en una urbe cultural.

Barranquilla is the capital of the department of Atlántico, located in the Caribbean Coast of Colombia, in northern South America, and between the cities of Santa Marta and Cartagena. This is the happiest and most festive city of Colombia.

This urban centre has received migrations that have enriched its festive traditions and custom since the 19th century. It is an industrial, commercial, port city where culture and history join together to offer a variety of activities. Among them popular dance, an exquisite gastronomy, architectural jewels, and its paramount celebration, the Carnaval de Barranquilla.

MANIFESTACIONESCULTURAL STATEMENTComo espacio creativo en el que se afirma la libertad y la irreverencia ante el orden establecido, el Carnaval posee un rico inventario folclórico que se manifiesta en la música, danzas, comparsas, disfraces, comedias y letanías que cada año se toman las calles de Barranquilla.

CumbiaEs el baile típico del Carnaval de Barranquilla, una galante y elegante danza, resultado de la fusión de tres culturas: la nativa, la española y la africana. La influencia es evidente  en la coreografía, el vestido y los instrumentos musicales que se usan para interpretar esta compleja y sorprendente música.

GarabatoSimboliza dos conceptos opuestos: vida y muerte. La vida se representa por un baile alegre, en el colorido del vestuario y en los dinámicos pasos básicos. La muerte es personificada por un hombre delgado y alto maquillado como una calavera y porta una vara larga llamada garabato que usa para agarrar y llevarse a los bailarines.

Congo Es una danza guerrera proveniente de África. Se representa con fauna y músicos ejecutan el tambor y la guacharaca acompañando al cantante. La coreografía incluye una batalla entre un toro y los congos.

Tiene un vestido muy colorido con un turbante y la penca, ricamente bordados, que acompañan la gola y la pechera. Al comienzo no le permitían a las mujeres bailar esta danza por eso, los hombres tenían que disfrazarse de mujeres.

As a creative space that reaffirms freedom and irreverence towards the established order, the Carnaval has a unique folkloric inventory that is manifested in music, dance, troupes, costumes, and comedy that every year take over the streets of Barranquilla

CumbiaCumbia is the name of the typical dance of Barranquilla’s Carnival, an elegant and gallant dance defined as a result of three main cultures, the Native, the Spanish and the African. This influence is evident in its choreography, costumes and instruments used to perform a very complex and startling music.

GarabatoGarabato symbolizes to two opposite concepts: life and death. Life is represented by a joyful dance and colorful attire and dynamic basic steps. Death is impersonated by a thin and tall man who wears a skull makeup and bears a long and particular stick called garabato that uses to catch and take away the dancers.

CongoCongo is a warrior’s dance from Africa. It is represented by a fauna and its musicians play drums and guacharaca accompanying a singer. The choreography includes a battle of the Congos with a bull.

It has a colorful gown with a turban and main rib that are outlined and embroidered and it goes with a neck tie and an apron. At the beginning, women were not allowed to perform so men had to be disguised as a woman.

MANIFESTACIONESCULTURAL STATEMENT

MapaléEs el más tradicional de los bailes africanos enclavados en el Carnaval. Es una danza, con movimientos muy sensuales de cintura, cadera y brazos que van in crescendo.

Se baila en parejas al son de tambores, palmas y canto. En sus orígenes, fue una danza de laboreo que se bailaba por las noches pero, con el correr del tiempo, ganó un carácter sensual por sus movimientos frenéticos.

Baile Negro y Son de NegroLa herencia africana en los bailes de Carnaval es inmensa.    Los movimientos de las caderas de las mujeres pueden ser rápidos o también lentos y sensuales.  Dentro de estas danzas hay una llamada Son de Negro, en la que los hombres se pintan de negro y los labios de rojo intenso, colores que enfatizan los movimientos de los ojos, la boca y la lengua. El cuerpo generalmente tiene una actitud tensa y lo inclinan levemente hacia adelante o hacia atrás.

MapaleMapale is the most traditional African dance related to the Carnival. It is a dance with very sensual movements of waist, hip and arms that goes on crescendo.

It is a dance of couples performed with drums and palms and singing. At the beginning, it was a labor dance performed at nights, but later it gained thru time and performance its sensual and frenetic character.

Blanck dance and black son African inheritance in the Carnival dances is humungous. Women hips movements are fast but could also be slow and sensual. Among these dances there is one called Son de Negro, where men are made up in black with intense red lips, color that helps to emphasize a movement of the eyes, mouth and tongue. The body is generally with a tense attitude slightly bent forward or backward.

MANIFESTACIONESCULTURAL STATEMENT

Danzas de RelaciónSon danzas que tienen poemas y versos que son dichos durante su ejecución.    Son consideradas joyas de la tradición por su creación oral que se transmite de generación en generación. Para su interpretación, los danzantes requieren estacionarse en un sitio. Las más representativas son Danza de Paloteo, Danza de Coyongos, Goleros o Gallinazos, Danza del Caimán y la Danza de Las Pilanderas.

Danzas Especiales Hay también otras danzas tradicionales pero su coreografía difiere por el significado de ellas. Ellas representan un argumento propio tradicional del Carnaval y no tienen versos. Sus juegos coreográficos tienen licencia para agregarle elementos de otras danzas regionales tradicionales como Danzas de Diablos, Danza del Gusano, Danza de las Farotas, Danzas de Indios.

ComparsasSon grupos de danzantes en los que la expresión libre, la creatividad y el ingenio son su principal baluarte. Ellos desfilan con disfraces tradicionales del Carnaval, como las Marimondas, los Monocucos y los Toritos.  Otros grupos se inspiran nuestra música popular o en música y ritmos de países vecinos.

Relation DancesThese dances have poems, verses that are said while performed. They are considered traditional jewels because of its oral creation that is transmitted thru generations. For its interpretation, dancers need to be standing up in a location. The most representative are Paloteo’s Dance, Dance of Coyongos, Goleros or Gallinazos, Cayman Dance and Pilanderas’ Dance.

Special dancesThere are also other traditional dances and choreography that differ by their meaning. They represent an own traditional argument of the Carnival and do not have verses. Its choreography is a game that is allowed to add characteristics of other regional dances such as Devils’ Dance, Dance of the Worm, Dance of the Farotas, Dance of Indians.

TroupesThe troupes are groups of dancers whose free expression, creativity, and ingenuity are a bastion for the choreographic proposal of the Carnaval. In their demeanour they have assimilated costumes that are traditional of the Carnaval, such as marimondas, monocucos, and toritos. Other groups are inspired in popular music or countries and their rhythms.

DisfracesEl origen de los disfraces tradicionales del Carnaval de Barranquilla se remonta al nacimiento de la fiesta y recoge el legado de culturas europeas, africanas e indígenas.

Los disfraces populares del Carnaval se valen de la parodia, la caricatura y la sátira para ridiculizar la realidad. Como juego de constante renovación de la vida, el acto de disfrazarse de otro subvierte las identidades e invita a gozar con el humor.

ComediasSon agrupaciones teatrales populares y callejeras cuyas representaciones parodian diversas situaciones de índole social, generalmente en forma jocosa y divertida.  Sus presentaciones son estacionarias. 

LetaníasLos grupos de letanías se conforman por personas  que, con el recurso de la palabra, recitan versos que son contestados por el resto del grupo. En la mayoría de los casos los argumentos  obedecen a temas de actualidad, que son punto de partida para realizar críticas, censuras o bromas.

CostumesThe origin of the traditional costumes of the  Carnaval  de Barranquilla date back to the birth of the celebration and amasses the legacies of European, African, and indigenous cultures.

The popular costumes of the  Carnaval  use parody, caricature, and satire to ridicule reality. As a constant game depicting the renewal of life, the act of disguising as someone else subverts identities and invites to enjoy with humour.

Comedies Popular theatre groups and streetwise performers make representations and parodies of diverse situations of social and political nature that could be very amusing and entertaining. They are stand up performances.

LetaníasThese are troupes formed of people who, through the use of the spoken word, recite verses that are replied by the rest of the group. The majority are themed on current events, which are the starting point for critique, censorship, or joke.

Lectura del BandoEspectáculo folclórico y musical en el que la Reina del Carnaval ordena el inicio de la Fiesta mediante la lectura de su decreto real. Recibe de manos del Alcalde las llaves de la ciudad, convirtiéndose así en la autoridad rumbera. Se inicia con un desfile de grupos folclóricos por las principales avenidas de la ciudad.

GuachernaDesfile nocturno de danzas, cumbias, comparsas y disfraces, luces y faroles, que sirve de abreboca a la temporada carnestoléndica. La noche es el escenario perfecto para que, iluminados por velas y faroles, los carnavaleros salgan a anunciar que se aproxima el Carnaval más alegre del mundo.

Batalla de FloresTradicional desfile de carrozas, artistas, orquestas, disfraces y grupos folclóricos. Su escenario es la vía 40 o Cumbiódromo del Carnaval. La apertura de los cuatro días de fiesta, el sábado, es una explosión de tradición e ingenio, alegría y creatividad artística.

Reading of the BandoA folkloric and musical event marks the beginning of the festivities. The Queen declares the beginning of the carnival by reading her royal decree. She receives the keys of the city from the Mayor and invites the people to enjoy the party. Following the ceremony, a parade of folkloric groups travels through the main streets of the city.

GuachernaIt is an evening parade with dances, cumbias, group and individual costumes, lights and lanterns that mark the beginning of the carnival season. The night is the perfect stage for people to go out and show that the most joyful carnival of the world is about to start.

Flower BattleSaturday afternoon, this traditional parade opens the four day long festivity with an explosion of tradition, joy and artistic creativity. It includes the winners of the previous year competition in the categories of folkloric groups, and costumes, along with orchestras and artists, and takes place throughout the Cumbiodromo.

EVENTOSEVENTS

Gran Parada de TradiciónLa tradición y el folclor marcan la pauta de un esplendoroso desfile celebrado el domingo, en el que las Cumbiambas, Danzas de Congos, de Negros, y de Garabato, comparsas de tradición popular, marchan en un orden supremo, mostrando todo su brillo y rindiendo tributo a la tradición festiva, dancística y musical del Caribe colombiano.

Festival de OrquestasEscenario en donde cada una de las agrupaciones musicales de carácter local, regional, nacional e internacional interpreta tres temas para concursar por el Congo de Oro, el más grande trofeo que pueda obtener un conjunto de música en Colombia. Es el gran concierto del Carnaval que pone a bailar a todos los asistentes.

Joselito CarnavalSimboliza la culminación del Carnaval después de tres días de gran fiesta. Con un corto recorrido similar al de un sepelio, donde los grupos de toda la ciudad dramatizan la leyenda barranquillera de Joselito Carnaval, un personaje, representado en un muñeco de trapo, que en Barranquilla ha cumplido desde los viejos tiempos el mandato de morir con el Carnaval.

Great Traditional and Folkloric ParadeTradition and folklore are the main characteristics of this splendorous parade that occurs on Sunday. Cumbias, Congos, afrocolombian dances, Garabatos, and other traditional groups participate as a tribute to Colombia’s Caribbean region’s dancing and musical tradition.

An Orchestra ContestScenario where music local, regional, national and international groups play three different rhythms in order to compete for a gold Congo, main award to be obtained  by the winning orchestra. It is in itself the main concert of the Carnival that puts a joyful audiences to dance.

Joselito CarnavalJoselito Carnaval represents the end of the Carnival after three days of feast. A short parade similar to a funeral procession where the groups of dancers of the town dramatize the legend of Joselito Carnaval, a character represented in a rag doll. Barranquilla has declared since the old days, that Joselito has to die every year as the Carnival ends.

Casa del Carnaval Ubicada en el barrio Abajo, tradicional sector de Barranquilla, esta joya arquitectónica construida en 1929 conserva su estilo colonial que la familia Caridi Mitrani remodeló en los años 90 y entregó a la Fundación Carnaval de Barranquilla como sede de la organización de la fiesta y punto de encuentro de sus participantes. Aqui también funciona la Sala del Carnaval ‘Elsa Caridi’ y la Tienda del Carnaval.

Sala del Carnaval ‘Elsa Caridi’ Es un espacio interactivo para conocer y disfrutar a través de una experiencia sensorial y didáctica las manifestaciones culturales más representativas del Carnaval de Barranquilla, Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Su diseño contemporáneo está basado en la recopilación de la memoria documental, fotográfica y audiovisual de esta celebración.

La Tienda del CarnavalLa tienda hace parte del programa de emprendimiento de la Fundación Carnaval de Barranquilla, ¨Carnaval hecho a mano¨ que fomenta la elaboración de artesanías tradicionales inspiradas en las danzas, bailes y disfraces del Carnaval con diseños modernos y exclusivos elaboradas por maestros artesanos.

Su propósito además de la salvaguarda de técnicas ancestrales de las artesanías, es aportar recursos para proyectos de impacto social que mejoren la calidad de vida de los hacedores del Carnaval.

Carnival HouseLocated in Barrio Abajo, a traditional neighborhood in Barranquilla, this architectural jewel constructed in 1929 preserves the town architectural style of the beginning of last century and has been refurbished by the Caridi Mitrani family at the beginning of the 90’s and was given as a donation to the Carnaval de Barranquilla Foundation where its headquarters are settled and it has become a meeting point to the carnival participants.

Museum of Carnival ‘Elsa Caridi’It is an interactive space to find out about the Carnival and to enjoy through a sensorial and pedagogic experience one of the most representative cultural manifestations of Barranquilla. It’s Carnival has been appointed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Immaterial Heritage of the Humanities and its contemporary layout is based on documentary, photographic and audio-visual data

Carnival StoreThe shop is a result of “a handmade Carnival”, a program of the Carnaval de Barranquilla Foundation that promotes the production of traditional crafts inspired by the dances, and disguises of the Carnival mixed with modern and exclusive designs made by native craft masters.

It has a double purpose, the one of preserving ancient crafts techniques and the fundraising activities in order to accomplish projects of social impact on behalf of those who makes this Carnival possible.
