BROADWATER SCHOOL

Year 11 students taking part in a GCSE PE ski assessment in February

Dear Parents

February has finally arrived and the dark nights will be getting shorter as spring

approaches, certainly something to look forward to. In these winter months

education as always maintains a high profile in the media. The latest debates seem

to be around the EBacc and the threats to the creative subjects such as art, drama,

music and technology based subjects. It has been reported that these subjects will

be under threat by the expected increase in those taking the EBacc subjects. Nicky

Morgan, the Secretary of State for Education has said that she expects 90% of

students in schools to be studying the EBacc subjects in key stage 4.

Interestingly in a recent meeting with other SW Surrey Secondary Headteachers

(Guildford, Farnham and Waverley) most didn’t expect to see more than 50-60%

studying the EBacc. Our governors and staff are committed to maintaining a broad

and balanced curriculum for our students and we will offer both the EBacc subjects

as well as ensuring that other subjects are offered to our students at key stage 4 as

long as they wish to take them. The EBacc subjects are important but also is the

opportunity for students to study a wider range of subjects as well.

In discussion with governors and staff last term we reviewed the school’s vision

recognising the impact that Philosophy for Children is having in the school and our

emphasis on the 4Cs of creative, critical, caring and collaborative thinking.

To deliver a holistic curriculum centred around Critical, Creative, Collaborative

and Caring Thinking.

To support every child to make exceptional progress

To create a highly motivated, ambitious and thoughtful community.

The governors, staff and I believe that these three statements encapsulate the

essence of Broadwater School. They are at the heart of the school’s values and the

underlying skills support the broad curriculum and ensure that the school is educating

the whole person, raising standards and creating resilient learners for the future.

Our adoption of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) approach and the key components

of the 4Cs of creative, collaborative, critical and caring thinking give the school a

distinctive feel that was recognised by Ofsted in the inspection before Christmas

where the school’s overall effectiveness continues to be good in all aspects. As a

result of our emphasis on P4C the governors have taken the decision to consult on

reverting the school name back to Broadwater School from the official name of

Broadwater School Maths and Computing College. We will be describing ourselves as

Broadwater School, a Lead school in P4C. If you have any comments on this proposal

please send them to Maureen Edwards the clerk to the governors at the school or

email [email protected]

I am pleased to be able to inform you that as a result of a governor led initiative to

improve the students’ safety when crossing the A3100 Portsmouth Road near

Broadwater Lake a new traffic island is going to be built. This will be particularly

helpful to those students who catch the bus at this point.

I do hope that you enjoy reading the many articles and reports in this newsletter.

Best wishes Chris Lee Headteacher

PE and Sports News

This term has yet again been very busy.

The cricket committee have been running Inter form cricket most lunchtimes. The

competition is being played in a knock out format and we intend to have a winning

overall form before Easter. Nolli Waterman, Women's England rugby player, will be

coming in to school on Monday 21st March to watch the final and present medals and

trophies to the winning form. There will be special awards for students who have

done particularly well throughout the competition.

Big congratulations also go to the Broadwater Cricket Academy who recently won an

award at the Sport Godalming awards. Eleven of the committee attended the

ceremony which was a fantastic evening to celebrate local sport in Godalming. A

number of local athletes and clubs were rewarded for their hard work and

commitment to sport. The Cricket Academy were given the Sport Development award

for their hard work over the last year and for promoting cricket in the school and local

community.

Broadwater hosted the Waverley Schools Indoor Athletics Competition on Thursday

21st January. This was a fantastic event and was attended by 8 primary schools. The

afternoon was aimed at Years 5 and 6 and saw pupils taking part in jumping, throwing

and running events. It was highly competitive and had an amazing atmosphere.

Page 4: Broadwater News February 2016

The Inter house competition is again close this year. Present scores are:-

Pegasus – 579 Aquila – 771 Phoenix - 657

On Wednesday 20th January we held our Annual Inter House Swimming Gala. It was

a fantastic event and around 50 students took part. Three school records were broken

and we saw some amazing swimming. A big thank you to Sarah Perry and Mrs Balchin

who helped run the event. Well done to Pegasus who came first, Aquila who were

second and Phoenix who came third.

Well done to the following pupils who broke school records!

Rachel Tidey – Year 11 girls front crawl 50 metres – 31.84 secs

Ollie Stemp – Year 10 boys front crawl 50 metres – 29.08 secs

Noelle Sharma – Year 7 girls front crawl 25metres – 15.74 secs

Just a reminder to keep your eyes on the P.E noticeboards for clubs and fixtures. All

fixtures will be posted on the notice boards and students must let us know if they can

or can't play. This term students can take part in trampolining, netball, football,

hockey and basketball. Everyone welcome.

The Year 7 girls’ indoor sports hall athletics team represented Waverley and Ash at

the Surrey County finals last week. The girls worked really hard and managed to come

joint 8th out of 12. Well done to: Noelle Sharma, Daisy Margaillan, Kate Cookes, Rose

Bevan, Caitlin Rees, Natasha Hounslow and Lizzie Needell

Page 5: Broadwater News February 2016

Waverley Borough Council will be running their annual training sessions in the run up

to the Youth Games. If you’re interested in being part of the Waverley Youth Games

sports teams there will be an assembly next half term with more details of how to get

involved. There are lots of different sports on offer.

This week Broadwater hosted the annual Gifted and Talented Festival for KS2.

Loseley Fields, The Chandler, Busbridge Junior, Godalming Junior, Tillingbourne and

St James' schools all attended. Pupils took part in trampolining, badminton, hockey

and handball. 25 young leaders were involved in delivering these sports to the

younger pupils and they did an excellent job. A fantastic morning of sport. Well done!

Well done to the 11 Young

Leaders who accompanied

me to Surrey Sports Park on

29th January. Each of them

led a skill-based badminton

station. The pupils who

attended the session were

Special Educational Needs

children from primary

schools in Surrey. The young leaders

did exceptionally well and we have

received two emails thanking us for

their amazing attitude, hard work

and approach to the children. They

were fantastic ambassadors for the

school. Well done to:

Jack Clemons, Poppy Campbell, Natasha Hines, Ted Barnett, Alex Bickmore, Tom

Higgins, Lily Colyer, Maddie Keane, Rosie Savage, Josh Hitchcock and Callum

Stewert.

Before attending this event Carol Bilton from Badminton England had provided them

with a training session which I am sure benefitted them on the day. This week, four

Year 11 students will be umpiring Badminton matches at the Surrey County Finals.

They have also been given training by Carol in school and previously at an umpiring

Page 6: Broadwater News February 2016

training course. Well done to:-

George Edwards, Ryan McQuillen, Brooke Darbon and Megan Davey

The Years 8 & 9 Waverley and Ash Badminton Tournament and the Years 10 & 11

Waverley and Ash Badminton Tournament took place at Broadwater at the start of

term. Our Year 9 girls’ team did particularly well coming FIRST, beating Glebelands

and Weydon schools. The winning girls’ team then went forward to represent

Waverley at Guildford Spectrum in the next round of the competition on Thurs 11th

Jan.

Well done to:- Jaz Balchin, Sophie Williams, Megan Moir and Trinity James

Congratulations go to our Year 9 netball team who came third at the District

tournament last week. Rodborough won the competition overall but we actually

managed a 3 - 3 draw in the match we played against them. This shows how much

progress the girls have made and how well they played on the day. Well done to:-

Sophie Williams, Jaz Balchin, Megan Moir, Maisie Singh, Ellie Hounslow, Hannah

Murphy, Hannah Froom, Georgia Gadd, Poppy Campbell and Natasha Hines.

Also, a big thank you to Lizzie Rhodes and Laura Hirons who helped to run the score

board and collate all the results.

Well done to the Year 7 netball team who beat Glebelands 12 - 2 at the end of

January.

Guildford and Godalming Rifle Club are planning to hold a taster session day after

Easter in the hope of attracting new members. Any students interested need to give

their name to Mrs Fowler and keep their eyes on the notice board about further

details. We hope to have a firm date next half term. Students who are interested will

have a one to one rifle shooting session. A great opportunity. Students must be 14

years old and it is likely to be a Saturday.

Broadwater was host for Surrey Cricket in the sports hall for the U13 and U15 Indoor

Surrey Cricket tournaments over January and February. Both teams had some

outstanding performances with highlights including Charlie Le Masurier bowling

to take 3 wickets in a single over, Josh Hitchcock and Jo Jo Fyfe taking some great

catches and Josh Burt and Harvey Penton Stewart also taking wickets.

The Year 8 football team played an excellent match on the astro against Woolmer Hill

under floodlights in late January. The game was end to end with both teams having

chances to score and win the game. Patrick Fahy, playing goalkeeper, made

important saves on the few times the strikers got past captain Tye Hackman,

especially in the second half. Alex Bickmore and Matt Lowe scored to ensure the

team earned a point with the game finishing 2-2. MOTM was central midfielder

Callum Stewart who is playing very well this year.

A combined Year 8 and 9 football team won with a convincing 6-0 win over King's

College in an away game taken by Mr Walker. He said the team played with

confidence and dominated the game from the start. Well done to the boys

who played and good luck in the last matches after half term.

The Year 10 team are still in a good position after playing Woolmer Hill in an exciting

game that finished 4-4. It was end to end for the whole game and neither side

deserved to lose. Tom Lawson played very well, captaining the side in another

high scoring match. Goals from Jason Cotton and Jo Jo Fyffe are really helping the

Year 10 team this season while Kieran Hill and Josh Burt are keeping out the

opposition at the back.

I was lucky enough to receive an invitation to attend an open training session at

Twickenham from the England rugby team as they prepared for the 6 Nations

tournament. Mr Walker and Mr Williams were able to take 15 students to see the

whole England team train under the new coaching staff and attend a questions and

answer sessions with the players. A very unique opportunity and one that all the

students enjoyed.

The Year 7 girls have been lucky enough to benefit from some RFU coaching this half

term with the sessions finishing in the final week

with a tournament at Guildford Rugby Club. Best of

luck to the girls taking part, many of whom have only

recently played for the first time.

A special thanks to Mr Whitman and his team

for installation of the new school rugby posts which

will further improve the PE facilities and the

opportunities available to our students in lessons

and after school.

Year 8 Student Harry Cook has been playing snooker for several years and is now

ranked number 16 in the country for his age group due to his recent performances

in completion and match play. Well done Harry, keep it up.

Page 9: Broadwater News February 2016

Year 9 student Oscar Westen has continued his good form in golf from last year and

his hard work has resulted in his handicap being cut from 27 at the start of 2015 down

to 14 at the start of 2016. He has yet again been selected for the Surrey

Golf Development Programme which is an incredible achievement. Well done Oscar.

Tyler Radlett in Year 9 has been travelling the country to play

darts in competitions against competitors several years older

but has still been winning and improving his standing in the

sport. He has faced U18's in the junior section but his success

in matches is growing and we wish him luck for the rest of the

year.

Huge congratulations to Year 11 Megan Davey and Year 10

Jordan Green both of whom have been selected to represent

England at the Taekwondo European Championship

tournament in Greece later this year. They have been waiting to hear back after their

trials and we are pleased to say they were both successful and the whole school wish

them the best of luck.

Mr Cook took seven Y11 students to The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead to take

part in a GCSE Ski assessment. They had an hour’s tuition and assessment with an

instructor who helped them improve their marks for the sport. Several of the

students have been on the school ski trip in the lower school in the past and this gave

them the confidence to attempt the GCSE practical assessment. The ski trip is running

again this term and I hope the students going enjoy it and learn as much as these Year

10 and 11 PE students did.

This half term the cricket committee has been busy running the inter form 1st round

and we have now moved onto the 2nd round. This has involved scoring and umpiring

which has been undertaken by us. Well done to everyone who played and

congratulations to all that won their matches! We also attended the Sports

Godalming awards ceremony in the newly refurbished Wilfred Noyce centre where

we won the Sports Development award.

Boccia Competition

On Friday 29th January, a group of 6 Year 9 students attended the YMCA East Surrey

Boccia competition at surrey Sports Park, Guildford.

They had to play against nine other school from Surrey. They had to play two ends

per game and the scores were added to find out who made it to the semi-finals.

They got through and had to play again to find the winner. They had to play 4 ends

this time and on the last end, we were neck and neck with one ball to go. Thanks to

a lovely curve ball they WON.

The students were over the moon and very pleased with themselves. They received

a medal each as well as a trophy for the school. What a great day had by all.

Broadwater School welcomes international guests after successful

Ofsted Inspection

On Monday 25th January Broadwater

School welcomed university

lecturers from Copenhagen as well as

teachers from London, to observe

the school’s Philosophy 4 Children

(P4C) programme.

Broadwater has been a P4C Lead

School since 2013 and this approach

has been highly acclaimed within our

last OFSTED inspection where all areas of the school were judged as Good.

“Leaders have adopted a ‘philosophy for children’ (P4C) approach to the school, which

characterises every aspect of their work. This gives the school a distinctive feel,

building on the four key components of being collaborative, creative, caring and

critical. This approach has successfully nurtured a culture of respect, inclusion and self-

belief in pupils.” (OFSTED Dec 2015)

We are extremely proud of P4C in our school. The students recognise that we need

to be critical of ideas but not of each other, and the mutual respect within our

community is evident for all to see. Every 3 to 4 weeks the whole school is involved

in P4C enquires where we address key issues that are important to them and society.

In the past we have covered issues such as; the environment, the dangers of

technology, ISIS, LGBT and within the next month we will be enquiring about the NHS

and our responsibilities as individuals to ensure our NHS can continue to thrive.

The next steps for Broadwater is to invite all the junior schools to join a P4C hub so

that children are introduced to the idea of thinking and analysing ideas from an early

age. It is vital, that we as educators recognise the need not just to fill students’ heads

with facts, but to inspire our next generation to enquire, wonder and question the

world around them.

Learke Groth from Copenhagen said “It was the most uplifting time of our UK trip to

visit Broadwater and witness the passionate inspirational spirit. We are hoping to

return in September with a further group of teachers so they can witness first-hand

the positive effects of P4C on students’

Dear Parent/Carer Please note below guidance that has been issued by Surrey County Council that I need to draw to your attention.

Penalty Notices to Address Poor Attendance at School A Penalty Notice may be issued as an alternative to the prosecution of a parent/carer for their child’s unauthorised absence from school and will be used by Surrey County Council in the following circumstances:- 1. Pupils identified by police and education welfare officers engaged on Truancy Patrols and who have incurred unauthorised absences. 2. Leave of absence in term time (5 days or 10 sessions or more). Please be aware that The Education (Pupil Registration)(England)(Amendment) Regulations 2013, which becomes law on 1st September 2013 state that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Headteacher is also required to determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. In such cases the Headteacher/Governing Body have to judge whether there are exceptional circumstances and may request that the Local Authority issue Penalty Notices when the absence is not authorised. Warnings will not be given where it can be shown that parents have been notified that such absences will not be authorised. 3. The issue of a Penalty Notice will also be considered where it is judged that a parent is failing to ensure their child's regular school attendance. This will be considered if the attendance is below 85% and there are 10 or more unauthorised sessions in the previous 6 school weeks, which may include a pupil arriving late after close of registration. If you believe at any stage that your child’s absence from school may leave you liable to receive a Penalty Notice, it is extremely important that you take action without delay to secure their regular attendance. If you have any questions or require further support to achieve an improvement, please contact the school or the Education Welfare Officer.

Penalty Notice relating to Exclusions If a child is excluded from school, Section 103 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 places a duty on parents/carers to ensure that their child is not in a public place without justifiable cause during school hours. This duty applies to the first five days of each exclusion. Failure to do so will render the parent/carer liable to a Penalty Notice. (Alternative education provision will be made available from the sixth day of any exclusion.)

Amount Payable for a Penalty Notice The amount payable for a Penalty Notice issued in any of the above circumstances is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the Notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If the Penalty Notice is not paid, the recipient will be prosecuted in the Magistrates Court for the offence for which the Notice was originally issued. Please be aware that each parent is liable to receive a Penalty Notice for each child who incurs unauthorised absences; for example, if there are two parents and one child, each parent will receive one Penalty Notice. If there are two parents and two children incur unauthorised absences, each parent will receive two Penalty Notices, which in this case would amount to £120 each if paid within 28 days. Advice and support is available from an Education Welfare Officer by contacting your local Education Office as follows:- South East - Tel: 01737 737600
