    Week of September 9, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build an enduring

foundation for academic, moral, and social success. WilliamsSchoolstudents embody integrity, confidence, discipline, and a love of learning.

    Dear Williams School families,

We are dedicated to making sure our homework load is appropriate and with purpose. Over thenext few weeks, teachers will be stating time expectations for homework assignments and askingstudents to record this information in their planners. If your child exceeds the time expectation, pleasenote the time it took to complete the assignment in your childs planner. Older students will be given ahomework survey to provide us with student input regarding homework. All of this information is veryhelpful and provides us with data to effectively evaluate the homework load at TWS.

Homework is a necessary part of the learning process and amounts vary depending upon thegrade. Also, keep in mind that not all students work at the same speed. However, if there are concernsabout the amount of time your child spends on homework, please contact the teacher. Homework ismeant to enhance learning, rather than hinder the process.

Have you ever asked yourself, How much help should I give my child with homework?Liza

Needham shared this article with me yesterday and we thought it might be an article that would interestparents as well. Four Homework Problems, Solved

Today students will place American flags around the school in memory of those Americans who lost theirlives on September 11th, 2001. Since we will not be here on Sunday, as a school we wanted to honor for thosewho lost their lives on that September day 10 years ago. On Sunday, perhaps a few families will be able to attendthe September 11th Healing & Remembrance Ceremony at Town Point Park.

    Have a great weekend,Melanie

    A HEADS UP FOR PARENTS

The Big and Little Brother and Sister Program is a valued tradition of The Williams School. Each child in grad

K-4 is paired with a school sibling in grades 5-8. In addition to various activities, the students will attend som

assemblies together and enjoy special meals. Most importantly, though, it allows children from different grad

to form bonds across age lines. Big and Little Brother and Sister Week begins Monday, September 12, 2011 a

culminates with a picnic dinner on Friday, September 16th.

The students responsibilities for the week are:

Monday - Older siblings identify their younger school sibling. Little brothers and sisters will complete

information sheets about any food allergies. All students will be making gifts at school to

exchange with their school siblings on Friday.

Tuesday - Older siblings bring a special note or letter for each younger sibling. Be certain that

the note remains anonymous. The note will either be written in class or as a homework

assignment. Students should put the first and last name of their younger sibling on the

outside along with the younger siblings grade level. The letters are collected and checked

in homeroom and taken to the lower school teacher. Parents are not responsible for this note.

Wednesday - Older siblings bring a small sweet treat for each younger school sibling to enjoy. A few cookies

or one brownie is plenty; this will be the childs afternoon snack, and it should be snack size.

Students should put the first and last name of their younger sibling on the outside along with

the younger siblings grade level. The snacks are collected and checked in homeroom and taken

    the lower school teacher.
