WHAT IS BROADBAND?

Broadband is the term used for the use of telecommunication which is always one that transmits a wide range of signals including audio and video over the internet.

(Broadband, 2012)

FIBRE OPTIC BROADBAND• Fibre optic broadband is delivered over a fibre optic

network instead of the copper network.

• Fibre optic broadband is high-speed communication cables that carry broadband and voice traffic by sending pulses of light through an optical fibre.

• Fibre optic broadband is the newest and fastest broadband developed to date.

• At present copper cables are limited to providing broadband speeds of up to 24Mb, therefore implementing fibre optics will assist in faster internet all over the country.

(Eircom Support, 2012)

DSL - LANDLINE• A DSL (digital subscriber loop) installs a special filter onto

a subscribers telephone line to remove high frequency interference to allow internet usage and phone calls at the same time.

• It comes with a modem which a customer will have to connect to their Ethernet or a wireless USB port to receive the digital data transmission.

• Customers will have to be within a certain distance of the provider/DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplier) in order to receive an internet connection.

• This broadband choice is most common.

WIRELESS BROADBAND• Wireless broadband is high speed wireless technology

that provides internet access over a broad area.

• It does not require an Ethernet or modem connection but does require a signal from a modem (of sorts) nearby.

• This signal is sent through the air via an antenna to a wireless router in the home.

• This is most commonly used by laptops via a wireless adaptor installed within the laptop.

• A subscribers bandwidth can be stolen by nearby internet users, so it is advised this type of broadband be protected with a password.

SATELLITE BROADBAND• Satellite broadband is provided by low orbit (LEO) satellite

dish rather than a DSL or Cable.

• The internet feed is beamed from the LEO satellite to a dish on top of a subscribers house.

• It can deliver speed of 2 megabits per second downstream and 1 megabits per second upstream.

• This can be quite expensive to run and weather can affect the internet signal. It is ideal (or rather a last resort) for those in rural areas.

MOBILE BROADBAND• Mobile internet is high speed wireless internet that is

provided through mobile phone signals/masts.

• These signals are received through a portable modem (USB flash drives, “dongles”), mobile phone, USB wireless modem or other mobile devices.

• Good for when you’re “on the go”

• However: As its wireless it can suffer from interference, it may be slower than a landline connection and it may have limitations due to monthly plans and therefore an increased cost.

MY CHOICE – EIRCOM!

Up to 12MB Broadband Bundle.

Why?

Only option that includes reasonable phone usage (as in unlimited calls to Ireland and UK), that also includes a satisfying amount of potential internet usage and speed. Having looked at other organisations I have concluded that €67.99 is the most reasonable price too. It also includes line rental, a free wireless modem, free set up and 60 any network minutes.

To run a sufficient SOHO, one would need access to a reasonable amount of internet and the use of phone 24/7.
