NAYDO 2013 will Bring People Together in

beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. Canada’s third largest city, Vancouver is renowned for its incomparable natural beauty and cultural diversity.

We welcomed the world as host city of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and we look forward to welcoming you in April 2013. Vancouver offers both outstanding opportunities for outdoor adventure and the sophisticated amenities of a world-class city—fine dining, shopping, museums, galleries, music, theatre and much more.

The Host Committee hopes that you will maximize your Vancouver experience by using the ‘Top 10 Things to See & Do’ included on page 21. Our suggestions range from things that fit easily into your conference stay through to how you can fill a few extra days.

Just like the 2010 Winter Olympics were considered Canada’s Games, NAYDO 2013 is very much Canada’s NAYDO. On behalf of the fifty-one member associations across Canada, we look forward to welcoming you to an inspirational NAYDO conference. Expect a few new, innovative ideas generated from last year’s evaluations and a lot of Canadian hospitality!

By Bringing People Together to educate, network, celebrate and inspire the Y’s important philanthropic work in Vancouver–we can all be better. And together, we can do much more to help our communities thrive. After all, they are counting on us.

Bringing People Together for a Common Cause

John Furlong

When John Furlong arrived in Canada more than thirty years ago from Ireland, a customs officer at the airport offered a warm but specific greeting: “Welcome to Canada—make us better”. Furlong took those inspired words to heart and within days he was

volunteering, making a contribution, doing what he felt we should all do—giving a little. Helping to improve the fabric of Canadian society remains one of Furlong’s steadfast personal goals. Imagine

if upon entering every YMCA people were inspired to ‘make us better’ by volunteering, becoming a donor and committing to our cause?

In our opinion, no one is better qualified to provide a warm Canadian welcome and help create a sense of what is possible if we adopt a shared purpose and belief in the charitable work that we do. As the Chief Executive Officer for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, John demonstrated incredible leadership in bringing community together—bringing a country together to stage Canada’s Winter Olympic Games.

Furlong’s service to the community has been recognized with many awards, among them the 2004 induction into the BC Sports Hall of Fame, site of our Friday night event.

Harvey McKinnon

Harvey McKinnon is recognized as one of North America’s leading fundraising experts. He has authored four books—two on monthly giving: Hidden Gold and Tiny Essentials to Monthly Giving and his latest book, The 11 Questions Every Donor

Asks, has received rave reviews. He co-authored the #1 bestseller The Power of Giving which has been translated into ten languages.

Harvey’s company, Harvey McKinnon Associates, has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for clients across Canada and the United States, ranging from Amnesty International and Oxfam Canada, to the Vancouver General Hospital and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

In his keynote address, Harvey will demonstrate how you can increase your impact and motivate others to give more. There are many ways to give beyond time and money—ways that change the world. Harvey’s purpose in life is to ignite a spark in each individual to give more and to realize the many ways you can give. Harvey believes—and research shows—that giving benefits both the recipients and the one who gives. Learn how your simple act of giving can improve your health, your relationships, your happiness and more…and in turn strengthen your YMCA, your community and the world.

This unique closing session brings together national YMCA Leaders, Scott Haldane, President and CEO of YMCA Canada and Neil Nicoll, President and

CEO, YMCA of the USA, with author, speaker and fundraising futurist, Penelope Burk.

Penelope’s presentation on being donor-centered in changing times will follow a mission moment on philanthropy in Mexico, now a full partner in the YMCA Philanthropy Alliance, and updates by Scott and Neil on the philanthropic efforts in both North American YMCA movements.

In a rapidly evolving world, fundraising cannot shield itself from change. Making the right choices when resources are so limited and competition is so fierce is the challenge that every YMCA staff member and volunteer faces. Luckily, today’s donors are much more specific about what it will take to win their support and inspire them to give more generously. With her evidence-based approach and trademark humor, Penelope will show that donors have much more money to give and that a donor-centered approach will unleash philanthropy at a whole new level.

Donor-Centered Fundraising is the breakthrough concept in fundraising and communication that halts donor attrition while setting a new standard for fundraising success. Based on over

seven years of research with thousands of charities and donors from across North America, the findings have

produced critically important information for organizations about why donors stop giving or give less than they could and how to dramatically improve retention and average gift value. With over forty years of experience in not-for-profit management, fundraising and research, Penelope has become known as a “turn-around specialist” who advocates innovative solutions to improve revenue and institutional performance. Penelope and her company, Cygnus Applied Research, Inc. are known for their leading-edge research with donors and their skill in helping clients adapt their fundraising operations to reflect donors’ changing needs and preferences.

Scott and Neil will provide a response to Penelope’s challenge to all YMCAs to become more donor-centered as they create a philanthropic culture of giving in their communities.

SPECIAL SESSIONS

Wednesday April 10 1:00 –3:00 pm

YMCA IMPACT TOUR:

Experience Philanthropy in Action at the YMCA of Greater VancouverFee: $15 (includes refreshments)Advance sign-up required due to space limitations

Dress is casual; wear walking shoes

The new Robert Lee YMCA in downtown Vancouver provides the venue for this year’s tour. Learn how the former aging YMCA was transformed into a vibrant new urban Y that serves more than 14,000 members. The new centre is impressive but even more so was the effort expended to develop the right partnerships and raise the required funds to turn it into a reality.

While we are proud to showcase our work through the tour, we are more excited about generating opportunities for discussion and sharing among participants. A multi-disciplinary team from the YMCA of Greater Vancouver including development staff and volunteers from the capital campaign, branch executives and program staff will be on-site to tour you, answer questions and facilitate chances to learn from one another. Join the special session at 3:45 pm (see next column) for more details from the development partner.

Because the Robert Lee YMCA is just a five-minute walk from the conference hotel, NAYDO attendees unable to participate in the Wednesday tour are welcome to an abridged tour of the Robert Lee YMCA throughout the conference. Visit the Host Y Hospitality Centre next to conference registration in the hotel to sign up.

Thursday April 11 3:45–5:00 pm

SPECIAL SESSION:

From Parking Lot to World Class Facility—A Case Study In Creating Social CapitalFocus is on development of the Robert Lee YMCA featured in Wednesday’s Tour

Stephen Butz President and CEO YMCA of Greater Vancouver

David Podmore Chairman and CEO Concert Properties Ltd.

The unique partnership between the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Concert Properties Ltd. produced a break-through approach to creating social capital resulting in the development of the Robert Lee YMCA and a 42-storey condominium high rise in downtown Vancouver.

By unlocking the economic value of aging facility infrastructure, the strategic alliance created new investment capital that included selling density rights and innovative approaches to revenue-sharing.

Stephen and David, along with other key people involved in the development process, will talk about this unique partnership and important lessons learned. Participants will be able to determine the viability of this partnership model in their community.

This session will be particularly relevant for attendees from YMCAs in large urban centres and is designed for a more advanced audience.

Saturday April 13 7:45–8:45 am

SPECIAL SESSION:

Philanthropy Forums Complimentary coffee

Much information is shared, ideas inspired, and knowledge gained during the conference but what’s next? What happens when you return to your Y? Philanthropy Forums provide a venue to meet with your Y delegation or one of these attendee groups to debrief and envision next steps. Other groups who would like to meet at this time can make arrangements in advance through the NAYDO Office.

A CALL TO ACTION SPECIAL SESSION:

Does Your YMCA Underestimate Its Value to Impact Investors?Panel Moderator: Kevin Trapani President & CEO The Redwoods Group

Panel Members: Diana Wells President, Ashoka Another leader in Impact Philanthropy to be announced

In this moderated discussion lead by Kevin Trapani, panel members will discuss how YMCAs can work with new philanthropists to move social impact to scale. Defining and understanding impact investing requires the ability to identify the greatest needs in your community, to understand the essential role of collaboration in moving solutions to scale and to appreciate the importance of measuring your impact. Hear the thoughts of our highly esteemed panel members on what appeals to them about working with the YMCA movement and their vision of the Y working with impact investors. Examples of where there is this kind of work at scale in the Y today will be shared along with a unique challenge to YMCAs in attendance to implement the concept after the conference.

THE TAKE-HOME CHALLENGE: Identify the top three social problems in your community, pick one and build a plan to address it that includes collaborative partners, a specific goal and metrics that measure impact. An existing project is eligible if the focus is on moving it to scale.

Winner of the top plan will be awarded a $25,000 grant in the fall of 2013.

SPECIAL SOCIAL EVENT:

An Inter-ACTIVE Evening of Fun at the British Columbia (BC) Sports Hall of Fame

Complimentary appetizers, beverages and a cash bar

At the YMCA we know the positive role sports and physical activity plays in peoples’ lives—from children to older adults. Sports influence how we learn, instill a lifelong love of activity and bring people together around a shared pastime. Start your free Friday night in Vancouver by joining fellow conference attendees for an interactive and engaging cocktail party at the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Immerse yourself in British Columbia’s rich sport heritage and enjoy some appetizers.

The BC Hall of Fame showcases Canadian athletes who have accomplished greatness, inspiring Canadians to pursue their dreams.

Optional attire for sports enthusiasts: While the usual conference attire is acceptable, we think it would be fun if you wore your favorite sports jersey (or YMCA attire) and comfortable shoes to the event! (Don’t worry, Vancouver is a pretty casual place so you’ll be fine for the restaurants you might dine at later that night.)

Optional Guided City Tour on the walk: Meet in the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver lobby between 5:15 and 7:00 pm, for a guided tour on your 15-minute walk to the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Volunteers will guide conference attendees along “Vancouver’s Run Way,” Robson Street, highlighting major landmarks and Vancouver’s cosmopolitan culture. Other transportation options will be provided in the Advance Packet.

HOT TOPICS Round A: 9:00–9:45 am Round B: 10:00–10:45 am

Sponsored by Y-USA Financial Development

The Hot Topics sessions provide opportunities to meet attendees with a shared interest. This is the time and place to discuss those topics not covered in any workshops, new concerns that may not have surfaced at the time workshops were selected, or any topic that would inspire and strengthen the philanthropic culture of your Y. Best of all, you can recommend topics you would like discussed.

Recommend Hot Topics on the registration form or through [email protected] (examples: “Donor Recognition”, “Major Gift Solicitation”, “When There is No Marketing Director”, and “Attracting and Retaining Great Campaign Volunteers”). A complete list will be included on the website and in the Advance Packet emailed to all registrants to help you decide in advance what table discussion would be most helpful to each member of your delegation. You can also volunteer to facilitate one of the groups!

Friday April 12 8:00–9:30 am

LAST CHANCE TO VISIT THE EXHIBITS CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST

In response to last year’s attendee evaluations which requested a meal session with no program

to allow for more informal networking, we introduce the “Last Chance to Visit the Exhibits Continental Breakfast” on Friday morning. Seating will be available in the British Columbia Ballroom where you can watch a continuous loop of winning videos from the 2013 Communications Awards.

Multiple projects are scheduled not only on Wednesday but also during the conference Thursday afternoon

for those unable to arrive a day early. (See Dress for Success project listing.)

All NAYDO attendees can participate in Philanthropy Live! by bringing gently used business clothes

(women’s or men’s) and accessories to donate at the Philanthropy Live! booth at the conference open Wednesday to Friday.

HOW TO SIGN-UPWhen you register online or use the downloadable 2013 conference registration form you will find each project listed.Step One: Choose Your Project Step Two: Choose Your Shift

After your overall registration is processed, you will receive an email from the Philanthropy Live! Team confirming your involvement.

NOTE: If you are arriving in Vancouver by plane, the All Day or Morning Shifts will require you to make your hotel reservation for arrival on Tuesday, April 9th. If you have any difficulty getting a reservation for that night contact the NAYDO Office at [email protected].

PROJECT 1: DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Wednesday April 10 Shifts: 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00-3:00 pm

Thursday April 11 Shift: 3:45–5:00 pm

Dress for Success is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to delivering programming and services to disadvantaged women. If you have an eye for style and love clothing, this is for you! Have fun sorting and merchandising donated clothing—that power suit you steam will help someone land their perfect job! Flex your customer service skills at the Dress for Success clothing donation bin.

PROJECT 2: GORDON NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE

Wednesday April 10 Shifts: 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00-3:30 pm

Interior designers are needed to help make an important community space inviting and accessible to those in need. If you are great at design and love to sort and display clothes and other household items, you can help vulnerable families have clean and easy access to Gordon Neighbourhood House’s thrift store.

PROJECT 3: THE WESTEND SENIORS’ NETWORK

Wednesday April 10 Shifts: 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00-3:00 pm

Isolation can be a huge issue for seniors, yet often it is one that is largely invisible to others. There is growing evidence that loneliness in old age is as bad for health as smoking and chronic loneliness can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 50 per cent. Yet, reaching isolated seniors often poses a conundrum to service providers in the community. How do you reach someone who, by definition, is largely cut off from the usual avenues of social connection?

Vancouver’s West End has the highest percentage of ‘live alone’ seniors in the city. This project gives NAYDO participants the chance to work with building managers in apartments in the West End that are home to a significant number of isolated seniors. Our cheerful and caring volunteers will staff ‘meet and greet’ tables at the buildings, offering tea, snacks and information on programs and resources available to seniors.

PROJECT 4: TAKE A HIKE

Wednesday April 10 Shift: All day 8:30 am–3:00 pm

Includes lunch

Take a Hike is a full-time alternative education program that engages at-risk youth through a unique combination of adventure-based learning, academics, counseling, and community involvement. If you love the outdoors—this event is for you. You’ll spend the morning meeting with the students and assisting program staff as needed. In the afternoon, you’ll participate with the group in an outdoor adventure!

PROJECT 5: YMCA BEACH AND LITTLE BEACH/MOLE HILL YMCA CHILD CARE

Wednesday April 10 Shifts: 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00-3:30 pm

Here’s your opportunity to help get these child care centres prepped and ready for the busy year ahead. Children love to play outside, but it’s our job to ensure that their outdoor space is inviting, clean and safe. If you’ve got a green thumb and want to assist in the re-vitalization of this outdoor space for young children to enjoy–please sign up!

PROJECT 6: CANADIAN NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND (CNIB)

Wednesday April 10 Shifts: 9:00 am–Noon and 1:00-3:00 pm

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver’s association office recently moved into the same building as CNIB, the country’s primary resource for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. We have learned more about the daily challenges facing their clients and the work CNIB does to ensure they have the skills, confidence and opportunities to fully participate in life. Volunteers for this project will help CNIB clients from across the lower mainland read their mail and other materials and fill out forms. This project is a great choice for those interested in making a meaningful contribution beyond manual labour! Satisfaction will be immediate as you support some very special people retain their independence.

PROJECT 7: SURREY WRAP PROJECT

Wednesday April 10 Shift: All day 9:00 am–3:00 pm

Includes lunch

The Wraparound Surrey Project brings together several community partners in Surrey, BC including the school district and police to provide longer-term, encompassing services and support for gang-associated youth and their families, as well as resources and education for the broader community. Through the project, 11 to 17 year old students exhibiting risk factors are provided a personalized care plan to address the risks that may lead to gang-associated behaviour. The plan extends into most facets of the young person’s life; personal, family, school, peer and community; thus “wrapping” the student with a network of support and encouragement. Join this project if you’d like to learn more about this impressive program, help beautify an inner city school and play games with youth.
