WHY IS IT THERE?

• Protect the large, un-manoeuvrable aircraft during the

critical stages of recovery and departure

• These include VC10, Tristar, C-17, C130 and A330

military aircraft as well as large civilian airliners with up

to 300 persons on board

• Brize Zone also protects Fairford MATZ when Fairford

is active

TYPES OF SERVICE AVAILABLE

• BS, TS OR DS outside CAS

• VFR or IFR ATC service inside CAS

TYPES OF SERVICE AVAILABLE

• IFR ATC service:

• CONTROLLER RESPONSIBLE for separation between IFR aircraft and for terrain clearance

TYPES OF SERVICE AVAILABLE

• VFR:

• Aircraft operate IAW ATC clearance issued.

• PILOT RESPONSIBLE for separation from all other aircraft.

• PILOT RESPONSIBLE for terrain clearance.

CTR MANAGEMENT

• THE APPROACH CONTROLLER is the airspace

manager. The controller you are talking to may not be

• Approval for ac to cross will be given to zone by the

Approach controller

(Unless a deemed route is to be used)

• Clearance will be given to you by the controller you

are talking to.

POSSIBLE CONFLICTIONS

• RADAR TRAINING CIRCUIT TRAFFIC

• (NORMALLY 2800ft > 2300ft QNH BUT COULD BE 2800ft +)

• VISUAL CIRCUIT AT BRIZE

• (1800ft - 1300ft)

• INBOUND AIRCRAFT VIA MALBY/NAXAT

• (FL80 DESCENDING DS)

• OUTBOUND AIRCRAFT VIA NAXAT/MALBY

• (SURFACE CLIMBING FL80 POSSIBLE DS)

• NB – CIVIL AIRLINERS WILL ALWAYS BE DS

RELEVANT TO IFR ONLY

Deemed separated from unknown traffic inside lateral limits.

Call traffic and avoid if requested.

If avoiding action given, try to achieve 5nm.

MINIMUM SEPARATION STANDARDS

• Civil ac

• Separation against traffic outside the CTR

• Special VFR

SPECIAL VFR

• ONLY AT NIGHT

• Civilian and Military aircraft may cross the CTR at night under ‘Special VFR’

• This means that although the pilot is flying under Visual Met conditions, IFR separation rules are applied against other aircraft.

• Pilot is responsible for Terrain Separation.

STANDARD CROSSING ROUTES

• DEEMED ROUTES:

• W8E Sqk 3706.

FACTORS WE CONSIDER BEFORE

OBTAINING YOUR CROSSING

CLEARANCE

• ARE YOU FLYING IFR OR VFR?

– AC UNDER A DS WE ASSUME YOU ARE FLYING IFR

– AC UNDER A BS WE ASSUME YOU ARE FLYING VFR

– AC UNDER A TS YOU WILL BE ASKED IF FLYING VFR/IFR

• SET APPROPRIATE PRESSURE SETTING (BRIZE QNH)

• IF RADAR TRAINING CIRCUIT ACTIVE? IF SO ALTER ALTITUDE OR ROUTE

• WOULD A DEEMED CROSSING BE MORE APPROPRIATE?

• ARE WE PROVIDING APPROACH WITH PROBLEM RATHER THAN A SOLUTION?

ZONE CROSSING

PHRASEOLOGY

• VFR TRANSIT

• ‘C/S CLEARED VFR TRANSIT BRIZE CAS AT 3300’ BZ QNH(OR AS APPROPRIATE), ROUTING…… REMAINING VMC.

• ON ENTERING THE CTR

• ‘C/S ENTERING BRIZE CAS REMAIN VMC’.

ZONE CROSSING

PHRASEOLOGY

• VFR TRANSIT AC CROSSING WITH TWR

• ‘C/S CLEARED TO ENTER BRIZE CAS AT 800 / 1300’ BZN QNH, ROUTING…… REMAINING VMC. EXPECT A CROSSING CLEARANCE FROM TWR’.

• ON ENTERING THE CTR

• ‘C/S ENTERING BRIZE CAS REMAIN VMC AND REPORT THE AIRFIELD IN SIGHT’

ZONE CROSSING

PHRASEOLOGY

• IFR TRANSIT

• ‘C/S, CLEARED TO TRANSIT THE BZN CTR AT 3300’ BZ

QNH(OR AS APPROPRIATE), ROUTING….

• ON ENTERING THE CTR

• ‘C/S, ENTERING BRIZE CAS’

WE ALSO WORK

Redlands Para • The aircraft will call airborne for a BS

• They will already have a pre arranged Squawk with London

• We climb them below the airway whilst obtaining clearance

• We call Sector 23 and ask for the Planner

• Request a procedural entry into L9 for our track, point it out and clarify level

• Readback clearance and pass to aircraft

• When the aircraft is below L9 we call Sec 23 to inform them we are clear of their airspace

Redlands

FL100

L9 Base Level FL 65

WE ALSO WORK

South Cerney Para

• The aircraft will call airborne for a BS

• They will normally ask for a climb to FL124, just below the airway

• We ask them to report level and ready to drop (We consider any MALBY departures)

• Once drop complete they will descend with the chutes and call changing frequency

TOP TIPS

• Check NOTAMs on the AIS website before flying

• Have a back up plan if you plan to route through CAS

• Call Brize Zone (119.0) 10 to 15 miles before entry

• Think about your routing before you call the Controller

• But be prepared for a different routing

• Beware of GPS. If you press GOTO or NRST and then follow the

line it can get you into trouble if that line goes through CAS

• Instruction to standby is just that it is not an ATC clearance

• Check links on www.flyontrack.co.uk for airspace guides written

by local ATC for most of the CTRs in the UK

• We are there to help (Honestly.) Call us when on the ground

(01993897785) if you are worried about how to cross Brize CAS

We would prefer that than cluttering up a busy frequency when

you’re airborne

AND FINALLY……….

• IF BUSY WE WILL PREFIX OUR STANDBY

CALL WITH ‘REMAIN OUTSIDE

CONTROLLED AIRSPACE’

• WE WILL STICK TO STANDARD ROUTES IF

APP & DIR ARE BUSY

• WE WILL TRY TO PRESENT A SOLUTION

RATHER THAN A PROBLEM

AND FINALLY (REALLY)……….

• The Pilot's Prayer

Oh controller, who sits in tower

Hallowed be thy headings.

Thy traffic come, thy instructions be done

On the ground as they are in the air.

Give us this day our radar vectors,

And forgive us our CAS incursions

As we forgive those who cut us off on final.

And lead us not into adverse weather,

But deliver us our clearances.

Roger.
