Basic Background Information

What is an earthquake? The shaking that results from the movement of rock beneath earths surface.

How are earthquakes measured? The instrument used to measure earthquakes is called a seismograph. There are three ways of measuring

earthquakes the mercalli scale, the Richter scale, and the moment magnitude scale

What does magnitude mean?Magnitude is the measurement of earthquake strength based on seismic waves and movement along fault.

How is magnitude measured? It is measured in three different types of scales(mercalli scale,Richter scale, and moment magnitude scale)

Damage Caused by Earthquakes

• Landslides

• Buildings falling off foundations

• Wide cracks in the ground

• tsunamis

Waves

What are earthquake waves called?Seismic waves(P waves, S waves ,and surface waves)

What two types of seismic waves are there?P waves and S waves.

What two types of body waves are there?P waves and S waves.

Body Waves

How do P waves travel? They leave the focus by compressing and expanding to earths surface.

How do S waves travel? They leave the focus by moving from side to side up to earths surface

Which move faster?P waves

Elastic Rebound

An elastic rebound is where a bend in earths surface occurs and breaks the land so it is straight.

An elastic rebound occurs at a transform boundary.

GPS Sensors

• One interesting fact about this earthquake is that it moved several GPS sensors. This will require …new gps maps.

• How does elastic rebound explain this movement?

Tsunamis

• What is a tsunami? An unusualy large sea wave caused by a sea quake..

• How do tsunami waves appear at sea?Type your answer here. You can erase the question.

• How high can tsunami waves be?Type your answer here. You can erase the question.

• How fast can tsunami waves move?Type your answer here. You can erase the question.
