BritishlawmakersurgedthegovernmentonMondaytointroducetoughmeasures,includingataxonsugarydrinksandcontrolsonpricepromotionsfor"unhealthyfoodanddrink",tohelptacklechildhoodobesity.
Parliament'sHealthCommitteesaidtherewas"clearevidencethatmeasurestoimprovethefoodenvironment"mustbeusedtotackleobesity,treatmentofwhichcoststhestaterunhealthservice5.1billionpounds($7.6billion)everyyear.
ButaspokesmanforDavidCameronsaidtheprimeministerdidnotthinkasugartaxwas"therightcourseofaction"andthathisgovernmentwouldunveilanationalchildhoodobesitystrategyintheNewYeartosetoutitspreferredmeasures.
Inareport,thecommitteesaidthereshouldbestrongcontrolsonpricepromotionsofunhealthyfoodanddrinkandasugarydrinkstaxonfullsugardrinks,withallproceedstargetedtohelpthosechildrenatgreatestriskofobesity.
Italsosaidthereshouldbetoughercontrolsonthemarketingandadvertisingofsuchfoodanddrinkandthatlabelsshouldshowsugarcontentinteaspoons,amongothermeasures.
"Onethirdofchildrenleavingprimaryschoolareoverweightorobese,andthemostdeprivedchildrenaretwiceaslikelytobeobesethantheleastdeprived,"saidSarahWollaston,chairmanofthecommittee.
"Afullpackageofboldmeasuresisrequiredandshouldbeimplementedassoonaspossible."
Thedrinksindustrycriticizedthereport'sfindings,sayingthelawmakershad"swallowed"theagendaoflobbyists.
