When preparing each unit of the book it would be useful to look at the Workbook and then do the corresponding exercises. The Workbook contains material which can be used for routine drill work with an unresponsive student’s group and with highly responsive students working more carefully on authentic passages. Organisation. It contains 6 parts that are thematically linked with the book “Britain in Brief” by V.V.Oschepkova and I.I. Shustilova. There are various exercises for oral and written work , which are subdivided according to the order of the book “Britain in Brief”, some new authentic passages with extensive vocabulary can be also found in the middle of each part. Timing. Timing of each unit depends on the motivation and level of the student’s group. Each exercise should be evaluated on the basis of four marks system (5,4,3,2,). Assignments fulfilled with bad results ( mark 2) should be remade in “the Corrections” , which follow each part of the Workbook. Types of exercises which serve to reflect the achievements in the learning process: 1. Translation from Russian into English and vice versa. 2. Multiple choice type questions. 3. Completion type exercises, which involve restatement of part of the text. 4. True/false quizzes. 5. Definition exercises. 6. Fill in the gaps. 7. For and against arguments. 8. Give the English equivalents. 9. Complete the diagram. 10. Give a brief summary. 11. (Dailies, quality newspapers, tabloids) The British are a great nation of readers and, with sales of national

newspapers averaging around 15 million copies on weekdays and almost 18 million on Sundays (besides the provincial daily newspapers and daily evening newspapers that most towns and cities have), only in Japan are more newspapers sold per person than in Britain.

The term ’newspaper’ can only be loosely applied to the top-selling ……. , however, these ……. Contain mainly coverage of ‘human’ news and scandals, particularly sexual, as opposed to political and economic matters, which are covered in depth in the larger …… newspapers .

Several of the tabloids even contain pictures of nude girls on page three. An interesting recent development has been the launching of two ‘quality’ weekly newspapers - The Indy and the EarlyTimes - especially for younger readers.

Newspapers in Britain are not subsidized (although the greatest source of income is advertising) and there is no fixed price. They are financially independent of any political party and any political bias results from traditional positions and the influence of the owner. A worrying development has been the concentration of many of the newspapers in the hands of two owners - Rupert Murdoch and Robert Maxwell- especially as a result of the former’s evident bias in favour of Mrs. Thatcher.

London transports. London is a city rich in history, full of pageantry and culture to suit all tastes

with beautiful shops and parks, characteristic pubs and cheerful, friendly people. Many visitors return time after time and still discover new areas, new places to visit and fresh excitement.

Although it is a busy, bustling capital covering more than 610 square miles, twice the size of Paris or New York, it is served by an efficient and varied transport system which is one of the best in the world. There are a number of choices as to how to travel.

The most scenic way to get about is on top of a double-decker bus but the Underground (called the “Tube”) is the quickest and avoids the crowded roads. Travel by taxi is often the most convenient though it is more expensive and taxis sometimes get held up in traffic. Walking or cycling are the cheapest and most healthy ways of travelling and allow the visitor time to enjoy the sights all around. The most nerve-racking way to travel is definitely by car while the most relaxing way is to catch a boat along the River Thames.

London taxicabs are famous the world over. The traditional colour is still black, though recently splashes of red, yellow and purple have made an appearance. Taxi drivers are cheerful and friendly and have an amazing knowledge of London and all that happens there

Taxis are a wonderful help to those who get lost or are over-loaded with shopping and after midnight they are the only to get around.

London taxis are reasonably priced and can be hailed in the street if the yellow “For hire’’ or “Taxi ” sign above the windscreen is lit up.

If there don’t seem to be any around in the street, they can be called by telephone. For numbers to ring, look under “Taxi” in the S - Z section of the London Telephone Directory.

6. Describe to a friend what possibilities there are for walking and cycling when they visit London. Make up 5 questions on the text below. Give some

synonyms to the underlined words:

Seeing London on foot. Cycling. The best way to appreciate many of London’s sights is on foot but

tourists should take spacial care crossing roads as traffic is usually heavy and approaches from the right! Whenever possible, roads should be crossed at pedestrian crossings (also called “zebra” crossings) or at traffic lights or where there are bollards or a pedestrian reservation in the centre of the road.

Several firms organise walking tours of the sights in and around central London. Details may be obtained from the London Tourist Board.

The British Tourist Authority in St. James’s Street can answer all questions about travel in London.

The cyclist in the congested streets of central London often has more freedom than the motorist and can usually travel faster. There are many firms, which offer a cycle hire service for both the amateur and the experienced cyclist.

STING IN THE TALE. The story of 20-th century popular music would be incomplete without

mentioning Sting - the versatile performer. Although popular music is usually seen as a single category, no other genre of music has encompassed so many different styles and forms. Blues, jazz, swing, country & western, rhythm & blues, rock’n’roll, soul bossa nova, reggae, disco, punk, hip hop and rap are just a few examples of the huge range of popular music styles that have blossomed throughout the 20th century.

Nobody knows what musical innovations the next century will bring, but we are likely to see a fusion of musical styles. This is a trend, which began in recent decades and has generated a broad amalgam of musical styles. An artist who has

54

55

embraced 20th -century pop music in more forms than most is Sting. The former bass guitarist of The Police has enjoyed a solo career that has brought together a tremendous variety of musical influences. He has crooned Sinatra classics, sung Alan and Marilyn Bergman’s Oscar-winning film song The Windmills of Your Mind, performed French chansons, joined forces with Luciano Pavarotti, and swung with juzz saxophonist Branford Marsalis.

His latest album, Brand New Day, features a string orchestra, bossa nova rhythms, and the talents of soul legend Stevie Wonder and the French-Algerian singer Cheb Mami.

“ I see my music as a voyage of discovery,” says Sting. “I’m interested not just in rock music, but in any type of music that catches

my ear. I’m not a radical avant-gardist, I just want to broaden the concept of pop music.”

The one steady note in this kaleidoscope of sound is Sting himself. Whilst the composition, colour and form of his music may change, the underlying substance remains immediately recognizable as Sting. Because of this, he can arguably be included among the great music soloists of the past century, along with Armstrong, Horowitz and Bernstein , all of whom share an ability to give famous songs, sonatas and symphonies a new and personal complexion. Popular music has come of age during the past century and has found itself a creative custodian in the form of Sting. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Marks 5 4 3 2 Total:
