Professor Alex Visser is an emeritus professor in theDepartment of Civil Engineering who was the SA RoadsBoard Professor in Transportation Engineering at theUniversity of Pretoria with a career of more than 20 yearsat the University. He is a Fellow and Past-President of theSouth African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) and aFellow of the South African Academy of Engineering. In1998 he was awarded the SAICE Award for MeritoriousResearch for his contributions to low volume roadtechnologies and in 2004 he received the Chairman’sAward from the Transportation Division for contributionsto transportation engineering. He was awarded Emeritusmembership of the US Transportation Research BoardLow-Volume Roads committee in 2006 for lifelong servicesrendered. Prof. George A. Giannopoulos is transportation planner,Professor emeritus of the Aristotle University ofThessaloniki and corresponding member of the Academyof Athens. He is the immediate past Director of theHellenic Institute of Transport, the National Transportresearch Organisation of Greece, which he founded andchaired for 16 years. He is currently advisory Professor atthe Beijing Jiaotong University, member of the EnergySteering panel of the European Academies ScienceAdvisory Council (EASAC) and member of the US/TRBResearch Innovation Implementation Committee. He hasextensive experience in Transportation Planning andPolicy issues as well as on ITS, urban mobility plans,freight transport and distribution. For six years he was co-chair of the TRB International Cooperation Committeeworking on international research governance andcooperation issues as well as on research implementation.For 12 years he was member and chair (for 7 years) of theTransport Advisory Group of the European Commission(EC) and he has served on many other Committees andworking Groups of the EC. He has participated in morethan 200 studies or research projects, over the past 35years, in most of them as coordinator. He has published260 scientific papers and articles in scientific magazinesand Conferences, as well as 16 books, four of which inEnglish. His two most recent books, are: “Publicly fundedTransport research in the P.R. China, Japan and Korea”,published by Springer (2018), and “The acceleratingTransport Innovation revolution: A global case studybased analysis of current trends and experience”,published by Elsevier (2019). Prof. Giannopoulos has been teaching as Visiting orAdvisory Professor in well-known Chinese Universities forthe last 8 years. JACOB BANGSGAARD Jacob Bangsgaard has been leading ERTICO – ITS Europesince 1st January 2017. ERTICO is a multi-sector platformwith 123 partners from more than 25 countries and withheadquarter in Brussels, Belgium. He worked for ERTICOalso from 2001-2006 as Director of International Affairs andcommunications where he was responsible for theinternational deployment support for ITS on markets likeChina, India, Russia, and Brazil. Mr Bangsgaard is a Danishnational with a university background in internationaleconomics and 26 years’ experience working in Brusselson transport and mobility issues. JAMES MAINA Prof. James Maina is a researcher at the China-AfricaInstitute of Transportation Strategy and a full-timeTanzanian civil engineering professor at the University ofPretoria, and a member of the South African Academy ofEngineering. He worked at the Scientific and IndustrialResearch Council (CSIR) of South Africa in 2005 as a seniorresearcher and became the first black chief researcher in2009. Since January 2003, she has been working in CHTS, andhas successively held the positions of academic staff,Director of International Cooperation Department, etc.She is responsible for BRITA organization activity,participates in BRITA research project, and is responsiblefor organizing World Transport Convention (WTC) and Beltand Road International Transport Symposium and China-Africa Transportation Infrastructure Cooperation Forum.Since 2009, she has been the assistant of China LiaisonAmbassador of International Road Federation (IRF). Since2017, she has been a member of the InternationalCooperation Committee of the American TransportationResearch Association. Since 2019, she has also served asthe Deputy Secretary-General of the newlyestablishedWorking Committee on Automated Driving ofCHTS and the expert of the ISO / IEC working group.
