Our strategy

This document is the easy read version of Bristol City Councils strategy for the five years; 2018-2023.

!3

A strategy explains the main things that we want to do over a long period of time.

After the Council has agreed the strategy, all the different parts of the council can plan what they can do to help to make the strategy work.

The strategy includes:

• Our vision - this is the one main idea that we have for the council

• Our themes - these are five big ways that the council and the people of Bristol work together

• Our values and behaviours - this is the way we want people to live and work together

• Our key commitments - these are the things that we promise to do

!4

One City Plan

Bristol City Council is just one of the organisations that affect Bristol.

We want to work with the other organisations so that all our plans will work together.

The other organisations include Health Trusts, The Police, Colleges, Businesses and many more.

Together we are working to write a ‘One City Plan’.

!5

Our vision

We want Bristol City Council to lead people and organisations so that people:

• Have hope for a better future

• Can see better things for themselves

• Can all share in the good things that happen

!6

Our themes We have 5 themes:

1. Empowering and Caring

• Helping people and communities to be able to work for the things they want

• Helping people to be more independent

• Supporting people who need support

2. Fair and Inclusive Making sure everyone has a fair chance of:

• Being able to learn new skills

• A decent job

• A home they can afford

!7

3. Well connected

Linking up people with jobs and with each other

4. Wellbeing

Healthier communities that can cope with life.

Everyone being able to have good healthy life.

Children to have the best start in life.

5. Belonging

We want all residents to feel:

• At home in Bristol

• They can do something and help make Bristol better

!8

Our values and behaviours We want people in Bristol to be:

• Dedicated. We want them to want to make a difference in the City

• Curious. We want people to ask questions and think of new things

• Respect: We want people to treat each other fairly

• Ownership: We want people to feel responsible for the things that happen

• Collaborative: We want people to work together

!9

Our Key Commitments We, the City Council promise to:

Empowering and caring

• Keep children and vulnerable adults safe

• Prevent people from becoming homeless

• Help people to help themselves

• Help people to be part of their community

• Protect children’s centres

!10

Fair and inclusive

• Build 2000 new homes a year up to 2020. 800 of these homes will be lower rent

• Make sure their are enough school places

• Encourage all different businesses

• Make sure every young person gets a chance to have some work experience

!11

Well connected We will:

• Make it easier for people to move around the city

• Make it easier for people to link with other cities in the UK

• Improve the public transport system

We will also improve intersection connections.

We will work to make it easier for everyone to move around the city.

We will help people get involved in their local community and be less lonely.

!12

Wellbeing

We will work to:

• Improve people’s health and wellbeing

• Reduce pollution in the air

• Help people be able to cope with problems in their lives

• Get Bristol ready to be run on clean energy, from the wind, the waves and the sun

• Encourage people to carry on learning throughout their lives

• Make sure that everyone has enough food to eat

!13

Wellbeing is where you feel healthy and feel good about yourself.

Belonging

We want people to feel that Bristol belongs to them by:

• Involving people in making decisions about what happens in Bristol

• Bringing people from all different backgrounds and cultures into the council

• Help people to be involved in their local communities

• Make sure that all culture and sport is open to everyone

• Deal with any abuse or hate crime quickly and seriously

!14

Our way of working The City Council has to change the way it works.

Instead of always giving communities and people money and services we will in the future:

• Help people and communities to be more independent

• Work more closely with other organisations so that, together, we can do more for less money

• Spend money on communities that they can do more for themselves

• Raise money in a fair way

!15

Our approach will be:

1. Help people to help themselves

2. A small amount of help and support for people who need it now, so that they can be more independent later

3. Support and services for people who need it the most

!16

Our organisation The City Council will have to change how it is organised.

We will have much less money and will be much smaller.

We need to make sure that our staff are trained so that they can work well.

We need our staff to be organised and work together to do all the things they need to do.

We need to be careful with our money so that we have enough for everything we want to do.

We need to look at new ways to raise new money.
