The Alliances Françaisesof Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney
About Us
For over a century, the Alliance Française has been overseeing an ambitious project: to spread French language and culture well beyond the borders of France. Each Alliance is part of this worldwide network and, while entirely independent, is recognised for its high quality programs and known as a leading French language teaching centre in the world. Today there are 1,040 Alliances Françaises in 136 countries. Each Alliance Française is an independent, local, not-for-profit organisation. With 30 Alliances Françaises in Australia this is a language and cultural network which reaches deep into the Australian community.
The Alliance Française French Film Festival is jointly organised by the Alliances Françaises of Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Australia.
AND WILLING TO SHARE FRENCH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE WITH YOU!
ALLIANCE FRANÇAISEFRENCH FILM FESTIVAL
are delighted to present the 24th
STÉPHANE ROMATETAMBASSADOR OF FRANCE TO AUSTRALIA
Bienvenue!
The 24th edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival marks the return of this major event in Australian cultural life.
The Festival is eagerly anticipated by a great many people beyond the local French community, as evidenced by the 126,000 patrons who attended in 2012. This wonderful level of support is an immense contribution to the strength of our culture in this great country, for which I give you my warmest thanks and heartfelt invitation to join us for the 2013 edition.
Cinema is an industry created by artists, which has reformed, modernised and adapted itself to a globalised economy. The success of French fi lms in Australia is indicative of their universal appeal and clearly illustrates their popularity on screens world-wide. Today French fi lms take fi rst place within their domestic box offi ce and are also exported with success. This is because French fi lms have the ability to tell wonderful stories that make one dream, smile, and at times, cry. It is undoubtedly a cinema rich with emotion and passion.
Once again the Festival will embody the diversity of French cinema through an eclectic program of 43 fi lms. Comedies, romances and dramas feature on the menu, with a notable section devoted to women as well as a compelling selection of documentaries.
As in previous years, we are delighted to present many great stars of French cinema such as Sabine Azéma, Pierre Arditi, Audrey Tautou and Juliette Binoche along with the latest works of esteemed directors including Alain Resnais, Olivier Assayas, François Ozon, Bruno Podalydès, Claude Miller and Raymond Depardon.
This incredible Festival of cinema, which will take place over more than one month, is made possible thanks to the involvement of the teams from the Embassy, the Alliances Françaises of Australia and all those who, not only during the Festival but also throughout the year, prepare, accompany and put into action this event.
The Festival, like many other cultural and social events, could not exist without the faithful and enthusiastic support of numerous sponsors and partners; I hereby express to them my deepest appreciation.
Now let us share with you many great adventures, fi lled with dreams, laughter and emotion, which we are proud to open with a tasty cinematic morsel that I am certain will entice you to sample many more courses within our 2013 edition.

Consistently hailed as the greatest French fi lm of all time, Children Of Paradise fi nally returns to the big screen in a stunning, newly restored version.
Set in 1830s Paris, the fi lm follows the ill-fated relationship between a mime, Baptiste (Jean-Louis Barrault), and an actress, Garance (Arletty). When Garance is falsely accused of a crime, she seeks the protection of one of her many admirers, however Baptiste’s love never goes away.
Made under extraordinary conditions during the last years of the Second World War, this epic fi lm set in a bygone world of French theatre was the result of a collaboration between poet/screenwriter Jacques Prévert, legendary production designer Alexander Trauner and visionary director Marcel Carné.
Almost seventy years after it fi rst screened, the memorable characters, sweeping romance and dreamlike qualities of this dazzling masterpiece remain as impressive as ever. Painstakingly scanned and restored from the original camera negative, this is a must-see fi lm for all lovers of classic French cinema.

The world of Hortense Laborie (Catherine Frot), a successful chef in Périgord, is tipped upside down when she is appointed as personal cook for the President at the Elysée Palace. At fi rst she faces resentment and resistance from the kitchen staff, but the spirited Hortense gradually wins them over. However, she soon discovers that the real heat is not in the kitchen, but in the halls of the Palace with constant battles for infl uence over the Chief of State.
Hortense’s trials are based on the extraordinary true story of President François Mitterrand’s private cook, Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch, and her challenges to create culinary art in a world of political intrigue.
Jean d’Ormesson, a Paris born novelist and member of the Académie Française, makes his feature fi lm debut playing the President opposite the César award winning and hugely popular actress, Catherine Frot. Her engaging central character’s good humour and mouth-watering dishes make this a piece of cinema that should not be watched on an empty stomach! It’s light in touch, subtle in fl avour and deliciously French.

Another woman’s life
Amanda suffers from androphobia – an abnormal fear of men that leads her to end love affairs before they get too serious. She jumps at any reason to dump a man, even if all he does is eat the cherry on top of a cake they’re sharing!
When Amanda (Laura Morante) connects with Antoine (Pascal Elbe) at a New Year’s Eve party and begins seeing him regularly, her friends are delighted. That is until they realise Amanda mistakenly believes Antoine to be gay. Amanda’s friends conspire to keep her in the dark until Antoine is so important to her that he can safely reveal his love without her bolting.
Blending wild farce, romance and a slightly bitter message that relationships might not be worth all the effort, this is a rare fi lm about a middle-aged woman that doesn’t make an issue of her age. For romantic comedy fans tired of the usual movie clichés, this piece of confection is sure to appeal.

Isabelle is a 30-something woman with a successful career and a loving boyfriend, but her family is plagued with a curse: every fi rst marriage ends in divorce. So when her long-term boyfriend, Pierre, proposes, there’s only one thing to do. Isabelle decides she needs to fi nd a total stranger, marry him and divorce him – all before her actual wedding!
Director Pascal Chaumeil has followed up his box offi ce hit, Heartbreaker, with an expertly created and delightful comedy. Diane Kruger, winner of the Golden Camera for Best International Actress for Inglourious Basterds (and also starring in this year’s Farewell, My Queen), shows she is equally at home with frothy comedy as she is with serious drama. One of France’s favorite actors today, Dany Boon from Welcome To The Sticks and Nothing To Declare in last year’s Alliance Française French Film Festival, is equally hilarious.
Can Isabelle break the curse? Or will she fall for her stranger’s charms? Enjoy the ride on this bright and bubbly romantic adventure.

Sacha (Gad Elmaleh) loves partying and seducing pretty girls. His mantra is “no alarm clock, no wedding ring, no taxes”. Charlotte (Sophie Marceau) has two ex-husbands, three children and a career. When they meet they are completely incompatible and instantly smitten, but will their relationship survive demanding offspring and Charlotte’s wealthy ex-husband who just happens to be Sacha’s boss? Happiness, it seems, never comes without complications.
Gad Elmaleh, a popular stand-up comic, was voted “the funniest personality of France”. He has also been building an impressive resume as an actor in recent years with Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris and The Round-up. After playing opposite Audrey Tautou in Priceless, Elmaleh now cements his romantic lead appeal. At the same time, Sophie Marceau, with a 30-year acting career and a James Bond movie behind her, adds a wonderful comedy to her repertoire.
The chemistry between the two leads, the hilarious supporting characters, a sensational soundtrack and non-stop laughs make this a delightful romantic comedy that should make everyone happy.

Louis-Do de Lencquesaing was brilliant as the suicidal producer in Mia Hansen-Løve’s Father Of My Children, and now the talented actor stars in his own directorial debut that is just as fascinating and elegantly made.
The fi lm is narrated by a divorced writer, Paul (de Lencquesaing), who tells the story of his encounter with Ada (Valentina Cervi). Ada has a settled life with a partner and a daughter, but when she meets the wry and brooding Paul they embark on an affair. Meanwhile Paul’s daughter is having her own romantic struggles and his mother has become unpredictable following the death of her husband.
Stylistically, In A Rush is anything but hurried. This is a laidback family drama with a literary tone – what the French call Romanesque. Alice de Lencquesaing is a delight as Paul’s teenage daughter, and veteran actor Marthe Keller is wonderful as the imposing character of Paul’s mother unraveling with dignity. This beautifully acted and handsomely shot fi lm is sure to appeal to lovers of sophisticated, modern French cinema.

Ten years is too long to be single, so one New Year’s Eve, 35 year-old Emilie decides to take the plunge into the world of online dating. With some courage from a bottle of champagne, she signs up to a website called Meet Me, determined to fi nd love in the year ahead.
As she navigates a new life of prospective profi les, photos and emails, Emilie realises she’s having fun online, but not in the real world. The men she meets in person are too cynical, too bizarre or even too romantic. Where can her perfect match be? Should she stop looking and leave love to chance?
The cast of this romantic comedy was encouraged to improvise, and the result is a series of natural, awkward and hilarious blind dates.
Sophie Cattani plays Emilie with a subtle mix of hope and disillusion. Set against picture-postcard Marseille, this is an enjoyable and slightly offbeat look at love in the modern age.

Taillandier is a washed-up artist who has left his family and his old life for an aimless journey. Marylou is a teenager rejected by her mother who leaves home to fi nd her own way in life. Although they have nothing in common, together they travel the gorgeous landscapes of France’s west coast. Along the journey, this lost pair might just fi nd a reason to live.
Patrick Chesnais (The Diving Bell And The Butterfl y) is one of France’s greatest and most authentic actors, and in his central role of a depressed man rediscovering the joys of life he is simply spellbinding. Making her feature fi lm debut, Jeanne Lambert is equally impressive as a troubled adolescent in need of a family.

Jeanne Moreau, a living legend of French Cinema, is as charismatic as ever in this beautiful and moving fi lm about age, loss and love.
The fi lm begins with Anne (Laine Mägi), all alone in Estonia. Her husband has divorced her, her children have left home and her mother has died. She decides to move to Paris to look after an elderly Estonian woman, Frida (Moreau), who emigrated to France many years before. However Frida doesn’t want any help – and the sparks soon fl y.
Jeanne Moreau steals every scene of this elegant fi lm, relishing her prickly, iron-willed character. Estonian actress Laine Mägi is just as excellent as the mousy caretaker in need of a new life in a new city.
The acclaimed Estonian director Ilmar Raag based his second feature on his own mother who came to Paris to look after an elderly woman. The fi lm premiered at the Locarno Film Festival last year.

Laurence’s awkward transformation is both heartbreaking and confronting to those around him, but he stumbles into his new identity with dignity and class.
Dolan, a 23 year-old wunderkind, has been touted as a young Pedro Almodóvar, as he shares the Spanish director’s bold visuals and ability to extract powerful performances. Clément won a best actress award in the 2012 Cannes Un Certain Regard category for her gutsy performance, matched here by both French cinema icon Poupaud and veteran Nathalie Baye as Laurence’s glacial mother. The epic fi lm’s soundtrack features classical pieces, 90s hits and Quebecois pop. Its eclectic music and fascinating characters, are sure to reverberate with audiences long after the credits role.

The comfortable life of middle-aged Louise Wimmer has been turned upside down. Separated and drowning in debt, she now fi nds herself homeless, forced to sleep in her car and barely scraping together money for food from shiftwork as a hotel maid. Preferring to keep to herself, Louise must somehow build a new life on her own – even if it means accepting the help of others.
This uncompromising character study, and honest look at daily life on the fringes of French society today, has been hailed at fi lm festivals from Venice to London. Critics have praised this fi rst fi ctional feature from fi lmmaker Cyril Mennegun, especially the unforgettable performance of relative newcomer Corinne Masiero.
Louise Wimmer is a riveting and uplifting portrait of a brave woman who fi nds the strength to keep her dignity in the face of adversity and to begin her life again. Joachim Lafosse has created a superb modern domestic tragedy that follows an intense and passionate relationship from fi rst love to a horrifying end.
Based on a real life incident in Belgium, the fi lm begins with Murielle (Emilie Dequenne) and Mounir (Tahar Rahim) falling in love. Mounir lives with the wealthy Dr Pinget (Niels Arestrup, You Will Be My Son), and at fi rst Murielle is happy to move into their home. However as child after child is born, the young couple become more dependent on Dr Pinget, and Murielle begins to suffocate under his infl uence and her workload as mother and live-in maid to the two men. The walls close around her and Murielle’s grip on reality begins to falter.
Our Children isn’t simply a tale of a woman with post-natal depression. It is a complex and psychological drama that explores the effects of perversely close-knit relationships. In an amazing career, this is one of Dequenne’s strongest roles to date. She has created a layered and believable performance of a woman’s slide to the unthinkable.

Léa Seydoux (Midnight In Paris) delivers on her promise as France’s next international superstar with her breakthrough performance in Sister, Ursula Meier’s extraordinary new drama about two siblings searching for a place in the world.
12 year-old Simon (Kacey Mottet Klein) lives with his restless older sister Louise (Seydoux) at the base of the Swiss Alps. Every day he takes the cable car to the ski resorts above to pilfer from rich tourists, while Louise drifts through a series of part-time jobs and promiscuity, sometimes disappearing for days on end. In her absence, Simon forges a strong bond with a wealthy tourist (Gillian Anderson), and his fragile relationship with his sister fractures into profoundly moving new territory…
Against the striking canvas of the Alps, Meier’s deeply humanist drama is in the grand tradition of the Dardenne brothers; an adroit exploration of the intimacy of two souls struggling with an unquenchable thirst for love. Enthusiastically embraced at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival where the Mike Leigh led-jury awarded it the Silver Bear, Sister is an unforgettable Festival highlight.

Christian Louboutin, the celebrated designer behind the world-famous line of red-soled shoes, has teamed up with the legendary French cabaret institution, Crazy Horse Paris, to create FEU by Christian Louboutin.
Literally translated as ‘fi re’, this fi lmed version of a live production is a sizzling collection of tableaux, mixing erotic cabaret with music, dance, masterpiece paintings, space-age chic and, of course, some seriously stylish footwear.
FEU by Christian Louboutin is the result of a unique collaboration between Louboutin, costumer Mark Fast and Crazy Horse choreographer, Patricia Folly. Based on the acclaimed Victor Hugo novel, The Man Who Laughs is an epic story that is both lavish in scope and deeply personal. César Award winner Marc-André Grondin stars as Gwynplaine, a disfi gured man with a scarred mouth that gives him a permanent smile. When Ursus (Gérard Depardieu), a travelling showman, fi nds the mutilated and abandoned child, he takes him in and raises him along with Déa, a young blind girl.
Together they travel from village to village performing “The Man Who Laughs” – a tender romance between Gwynplaine and Déa that delights audiences wherever they go. However, when Gwynplaine discovers he is the heir to a fortune, he becomes seduced by a life of luxury and a decadent duchess (Emmanuelle Seigner), forgetting the two people who always loved him.
Director Jean-Pierre Améris follows his hit of last year’s Festival, Romantics Anonymous, with a bold adaptation of Hugo’s timeless story. This fascinating fi lm is about power, politics and society’s obsession with appearance but also remains, at heart, a beautiful and tragic love story.

Renoir is the sumptuous and revealing story of two great artists – and the woman who came between them.
It is 1915. The eminent painter Auguste Renoir is in his twilight years, tormented by the loss of his wife and the arthritic pains of old age. When young Andrée enters his life, the grand old artist fi nds his last model a source of renewed inspiration. At the same time, the painter’s son, future fi lmmaker Jean Renoir, returns home to convalesce after being wounded in action. Jean falls in love with the wild and beautiful Andrée against the wishes of his father.
This sun-soaked, gorgeous looking fi lm makes the most of its idyllic Côte d’Azur setting as it tells the true story of muse Andrée Heuschling (Christa Theret) and the impact she had on two celebrated artists. Veteran actor Michel Bouquet is perfect as the grizzled elder Renoir, while Vincent Rottiers brilliantly captures the still unformed younger Renoir artist who is about to fall in love with the new art form of cinema.

The 2012 Cannes Film Festival ended on a bittersweet note when it closed with Thérèse Desqueyroux. It was directed by one of France’s most beloved and acclaimed fi lmmakers, Claude Miller, who had died just one month before the Cannes screening. Based on François Mauriac’s famous novel, Miller’s elegant last fi lm gloriously brings to life a classic tale based on a real life incident.
Thérèse (Audrey Tautou, star of Amelie and Delicacy) is an intelligent young woman married off to Bernard Desqueyroux (Gilles Lellouche), the chauvinistic son of another local bourgeois dynasty. Thérèse’s avant-garde ideas clash with the local conventions and she yearns to break free. Her freedom becomes tantalizingly close when Thérèse discovers that increasing Bernard’s medicine dose makes him unwell.

31WHEN ART GOES TO CINEMA
Alain Resnais, whose career has extended over more than six decades, directs a love letter to both actors and cinema. The fi lm opens with a who’s-who of French acting royalty including Michel Piccoli, Mathieu Almaric, Lambert Wilson, Anne Consigny, Sabine Azéma and Pierre Arditi all being invited to hear a playwright’s will.
The playwright (Denis Podalydès) has left a fi lmed legacy that asks the cast to view a performance of Eurydice, a play they had all worked on at some point in their careers. As the cast watch the new production, they recollect their own performances and begin to interact with each other, no longer observing but performing alongside their younger selves.
Digital technology meets traditional fi lmmaking and the present meets the past in this daring and original work. The fi lm screened at New York and Cannes Film Festivals in 2012 and clearly demonstrated that the 90 year-old director still has many things to say about the relationship between cinema and life.

32 SHOULD WE LAUGH?
Winner of the Special Jury Prize – Un Certain Regard at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, The Big Night is an anarchic black comedy about two brothers and their suburban revolution.
Not (Benoît Poelvoorde, Romantics Anonymous in last year’s Alliance Française French Film Festival) is a self-confessed “world’s oldest punk with a dog” who spends his days wandering aimlessly around the shopping centre where his parents work. His brother, Jean (Albert Dupontel, The Clink Of Ice) is a straight-laced mattress salesman. The brothers have nothing in common, but when Jean’s life begins to unravel after a drunken resignation, Not takes him under his wing and transforms him into a punk. Together, they start a new revolution against soul crushing shopping complexes and suburban life.
Following their absurdist 2010 road trip movie, Mammuth, directors Gustave Kervern and Benoît Delépine have brought their unique sense of humour to create a wild punk rock comedy about two men looking for something to fi ght against and fi nding something in each other.

Poor Armand is going through a mid-life crisis. He’s a pharmacist but his passion is for magic. He’s torn between his wife, Hé lè ne, and his mistress, Alix. He can’t talk to his children and he can’t get away from his mother-in-law. When his grandmother dies, Armand is faced with one more dilemma – burial or cremation – and he is fi nally pushed over the edge.
In this warm-hearted and crowd-pleasing comedy, the hapless Armand is played by Denis Podalydès, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, director Bruno Podalydès. The entire ensemble is wonderful, especially Valérie Lemercier (Best Supporting Actress César for Orchestra Seats) as the divorced dental nurse, Alix.
This sunny modern day farce has been compared to golden-era Woody Allen fi lms with its light approach to universal themes of love, death and family. Following its Première in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, where its unpretentious humour won over critics, Granny’s Funeral delighted audiences in France and is sure to do the same here.

Looking For Hortense is a bittersweet ‘comedie de moeurs’ that is French in spirit but universal in appeal. It tells the story of Damien (Jean-Pierre Bacri), a professor of Chinese civilization, and his wife, Iva (Kristin Scott Thomas). Their marriage has turned stale and the only thing they share is the care of their son Noé, a precocious child going through a pre-teen crisis. Damien also has a dysfunctional relationship with his father (Claude Rich), a high-ranking state judge.
When Iva asks Damien to speak to his father on behalf of a woman facing deportation, he is loath to ask for help, but when Damien meets the lovely Zorica (Isabelle Carré), the legalities quickly become more personal. Through Zorica, Damien discovers a long forgotten desire and a way to fi nally grow up.
Looking For Hortense was selected Out Of Competition in last year’s Venice Film Festival. With its laugh-out-loud moments of comedy, deft touches of social satire and richly drawn characters, it is sure to appeal to Australian audiences too.

Simon and Julien are two twentysomething Belgians who just want to escape the daily grind. They hit the open road in a mobile home with dreams of sunsets, romance and adventure. However in the face of unexpected practicalities, they soon fi nd that getting away from it all is harder than they thought.
The success of this light and funny buddy fi lm is mostly the result of the two charismatic leads, played by Guillaume Gouix (Nobody Else But You in last year’s Festival) and Arthur Dupont (Bus Palladium and Haute Cuisine, this year’s opening fi lm). They make a very likeable and entertaining double act as members of the post baby boom generation struggling to fi nd direction in their lives.
After a solid career as a screenwriter, François Pirot has made an impressive debut as a feature fi lm director with Mobile Home, balancing impressive widescreen cinematography with subtle, endearing performances. It’s a decision that faces every parent-to-be: what name will you give your child? In this outrageous new comedy, Vincent (Patrick Bruel) announces to his family and friends at a dinner party the name he has chosen for his fi rst, unborn son. The unexpected reactions from everyone present set off a chaotic night of heated arguments and smashed plates.
In the tradition of such French farces as The Dinner Game, this adaptation of a highly successful stage play (with most of the original cast) keeps the laughs coming thick and fast. With the action mostly confi ned to a single Parisian apartment, there is an added level of pressure heaped on the 40-something characters as their prejudices and petty grievances with each other are brought to the surface.
Beneath this hilarious romp is a sharp-tongued satire of bourgeois-bohemian sensibilities. What’s In A Name? was a smash hit at the French box offi ce. Its universal themes, recognisable characters and hysterical performances are sure to make it a hit around the world.

Following the internationally acclaimed Summer Hours and Carlos, the Festival is thrilled to premiere celebrated master Olivier Assayas’ After May, a loosely autobiographical and evocative drama about a young French artist caught up in a whirlwind of politics, art and sex in the wake of the electrifying events of May 1968.
It’s 1971, near Paris. Gilles (Clément Métayer) is a high school student torn between left-wing activism and his aspiration to become a painter. After being left behind by his non-committal girlfriend Laure (Carole Combes), he meets political fi rebrand Christine (Lola Créton) and senses a kindred spirit. When one of their protests goes wrong, Gilles, Christine and their friends escape to sun-drenched Italy for the summer, where they live a bohemian life drifting between parties, rallies and agit-prop fi lm screenings, discovering that at their age everything is mutable, and life awaits the curious…
Blissfully nostalgic without being at all sentimental, After May burns with the tingling passion of youth, and is another must-see from one of world cinema’s most vital and infl uential auteurs.

In 19th century Paris, ambitious Professor Charcot (Vincent Lindon) is known as the “Napoleon of the neuroses” at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. Charcot selects only the most interesting cases to examine in front of fellow doctors at his weekly seminars. When he witnesses Augustine (Soko), a young patient suffering a violent seizure, he takes her as his special project.
Augustine gradually becomes the exclusive subject of Charcot’s work and his obsession, putting at risk both her mental stability and his marriage to the wealthy Constance (Chiara Mastroianni).
Augustine was a huge success last year at a special screening during Cannes International Critics’ Week and at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Alice Winocour brings ideas around female madness and sexual politics of the time into sharp focus with sensational performances by four time César nominee Lindon (Anything For Her and Welcome) and singer-turned-actress Soko. This is an engaging, intelligent and sensual period fi lm that captures an interesting era in pre-Freud neurology.

Camille Rewinds is a hilarious fl ashback fairy-tale, reminiscent of Frances Ford Coppola’s Peggy Sue Got Married. It asks, what would happen if we could go back in time and do things differently? Would we make the same choices? Wear the same bad clothes?
Noémie Lvovsky directs, co-writes and stars as Camille, a woman who is about to lose her husband Eric (Samir Guesmi), to a younger woman. Camille and Eric were 16 when they fell in love, but now, 25 years later, their marriage is over. Camille’s life takes a strange turn when she faints on New Year’s Eve and is transported back in time, waking up in the 80s to fi nd her parents, girlfriends and Eric treating her like the 16 year-old girl she used to be. Realising that she can make different choices, Camille embraces her second chance, as well as a garish assortment of fashion and hairstyles. But can she avoid the inevitable?

It is 1789 – the eve of the French Revolution in the Court of Versailles. When news of the storming of the Bastille reaches the nobles, they all fl ee with their servants, fearing for their lives. One of Marie-Antoinette’s devoted ladies-in-waiting stays to be by her Queen’s side, certain that neither will be harmed. History, however, is already in motion…
Celebrated director Benoît Jacquot has created a sumptuous and fascinating drama, skillfully weaving the historical scenes of social upheaval with fi nely drawn characters of the Queen (Diane Kruger), her reader (Léa Seydoux) and her close friend (Virginie Ledoyen). The exquisite period details extend from the gilded drawing rooms of the nobility to the hidden quarters of those who serve.

If you could live your life again, would you change anything? This is the question Jean-Paul Rouve’s wonderful second feature fi lm asks with a tale of regret and new beginnings. Actor/director Rouve stars as Mathias, a happily married man with a good job and a lovely young daughter.

While traveling, Mathias spots a 10 year-old boy he believes is his earlier self. Mathias sees the child as a chance to go back in time to see his father once again, but at what cost to his present life?

46 MAKE ME THRILL
Based on the memoirs of real-life gangster Edmond “Momon” Vidal, this fourth fi lm from French policeman-turned-director Olivier Marchal is an action packed tale of crime and loyalty.
Momon (César Award winner Gérard Lanvin, Point Blank and Jo’s Boy in last year’s Alliance Française French Film Festival) is a retired gangster who wants to grow old and raise a family. However his peace is shattered when Serge, a childhood friend, comes back into his life, along with ambitious policemen and vengeful gangsters.
In the 1970s, Momon and Serge had started their own gang, Les Lyonnais, which pulled off a series of spectacularly violent holdups. Momon had hoped this was all long forgotten, but now his code requires him to stand by his old friend.
Cleverly shifting from past to present, with realistic and confronting scenes of violence set in the 1970s, this dark and intense fi lm is a glimpse into the heart of the mafi a, and what people will do when there is everything to lose.

His talented student, Claude (Ernst Umhauer), writes of charming his way into his friend’s house and of his fascination with his friend’s mother (Emmanuelle Seigner).
Germain’s passion for teaching is reawakened and he offers Claude some private lessons. But who has he let into his house? Gradually the line between Claude’s new stories and reality blur until Germain himself starts appearing in Claude’s writing and Germain’s own life becomes a new obsession.
Celebrated auteur fi lmmaker François Ozon has adapted Juan Mayorga’s play The Boy In The Last Row to create a captivating and ironic look at the art of storytelling itself. In this delightfully frothy fi lm, Sandrine Kiberlain stars as Pauline, the workaholic editor of a magazine that covers grisly crimes. Pauline’s life is micromanaged to perfection, but when her boyfriend dumps her, she crumbles. The solution? Her sister, Jeanne (Audrey Lamy, All That Glitters from the 2011 Alliance Française French Film Festival), whisks Pauline off to the Italian Riviera hoping that sunshine will cure a broken heart.
The problem is that it seems Pauline can’t escape crime for long. She stumbles across a murder mystery of her own when an eccentric old woman (Michèle Moretti) disappears. Enlisting the help of a handsome lifeguard (Claudio Santamaria), Pauline takes on the role of amateur detective.
Sandrine Kiberlain starred in The Women On The 6th Floor – an audience favourite at the 2011 Festival. She has established a reputation as one of France’s leading ladies, and her performance in Pauline Detective is both understated and incredibly engaging. Santamaria adds a welcome dose of Italian hunk to a fun Riviera romp that mixes adultery, serial killers, beautiful people, gorgeous beachwear and romance.

DIRECTOR SÉBASTIEN LIFSHITZ
This excellent documentary explores the lives of the so-called “invisibles” – homosexual men and women born in the interwar period (1919 to 1939). Eleven people from a range of backgrounds share how they struggled to live openly within society, with all the joy, love, sex, homophobia and aggression they have experienced over their long lives.
Director Sébastien Lifshitz’s fi lm focuses on people from the countryside and regional towns so that their coming-out experiences are seen more as personal journeys than a collective movement. Each man and woman featured (all of them over 70) took a unique step from secrecy to freedom. Supported by incredible photographic records and archival footage, their stories balance compromise and loneliness with an inspiring sense of self-discovery.
The Invisibles featured in the Special Screening section of the 2012 Cannes Film Festival where audiences were touched by its candid and moving recollections. Although there are heartbreaking moments, this is a warm, funny and often joyous cinema experience that will appeal to a wide audience.

59BEYOND FICTION
Journal de France is a stunning documentary that follows legendary fi lmmaker and photographer Raymond Depardon as he travels around France with a large-format camera for six years to shoot the country’s ordinary life and landscapes. This very personal story, told from the point of view of a passionate artist, was given a Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
The revealing documentary is narrated by Depardon’s partner and collaborator, Claudine Nougaret, and is woven with footage from the fi lmmaker’s early globetrotting career. It includes previously unseen archival interviews with Alain Delon, Jean-Luc Godard and many others.
This comprehensive career retrospective takes a unique look at the working life of Depardon and the evocative images from his past and present. As the title suggests, it is also a fascinating and beautiful vision of France itself. From the country’s cafes and highways to its factories and forests, this is a chance to see France again through the eyes of a master.

61BEYOND FICTION
One day in October 1971, the head of the French Defense Department, Michel Debré, announced he was going to enlarge the Larzac military camp from 3,000 to 14,000 hectares. ‘We’ve chosen the Larzac, because it’s an abandoned region,’ he said. What the government didn’t count on were the farmers of Larzac. Previously considering themselves isolated and apolitical, they rallied together and fought the system for ten years to keep their land.
Leadersheep tells the story of their struggle (including memorable protest scenes of sheep being herded under the Eiffel Tower) as well as the story of the greater Larzac movement that sprang up all around France. People from all backgrounds joined the cause, and today Larzac is referred to as the birthplace of anti-globalisation.
Christian Rouand’s documentary is the inspiring true story of how ordinary people risked everything to defend their community and their livelihood. Leadersheep enjoyed a Special Screening at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and it won a César Award for Best Documentary.

“A MOMENT OF SCENIC AND MUSICAL GRACE” Télérama
63BEYOND FICTION
Olivia Ruiz, Jeanne Cherhal, Emily Loizeau, La Grande Sophie, Rosemary Standley and Camille are the most audacious female voices in the young French music scene. In April 2010 they joined forces to create Les Françoises, a one-time show for the Printemps de Bourges Festival. This fascinating fi lm takes you behind the scenes from how they met, through the rehearsal period, and up to the amazing fi nal concert.
The fi lm successfully captures the creative challenges and dynamics that evolve between these six strong and successful women. We see them share their songs, as each singer interprets a song written by another member in the group – rearranging, reinventing and ultimately performing at the Festival.
Le Printemps de Bourges is an annual music festival held over fi ve days in Bourges. This major European event started in 1977 and its focus remains the same today: discovery, genre mixing and audacity. Les Françoises, When French Singers Go Wild epitomises these principals, and their unique performance will now live forever in this engaging and revealing fi lm.
