The game was primarily developed under the European Union funded project of Levelling the Playing Field: fair partnership for local development to improve the forest sustainability in Southeast Asia (2003–2007). Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD) and Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) managed this project with three partners, i.e., Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Indonesia, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Postgraduate students of the Faculty of Forestry of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) year 2007 contributed to the concept and early development of this game.

The Landscape Game offers a more intelligent game that is fun, environmentally conscious and sensitive to government policy and market dynamics.

The Landscape Game operates on a landscape, which is a mosaic of various land cover and land use patches that work as an ecosystem. Through this game, stakeholders can experiment with the likely impacts of human actions in a landscape where competing land uses and policy dynamics interact. Policy makers can learn how to maintain and improve the sustainability and productivity of a landscape by using various policy instruments, e.g., rules, taxes, land use, incentives and disincentives.

This game introduces a variety of concepts such as landscape conservation, development, environmental services, investment alternatives, trade among players, competition and collaboration. The game challenges rational players to maximize their revenues, while at the same time taking care of the ecological and social conditions. Players who play to benefit these indicators will be rewarded at the end of the game.

Permainan ini dilakukan di atas sebuah bentang alam (landscape) yaitu sebuah mosaik dari tutupan lahan alami dan buatan yang terdiri dari hutan inti, hutan tepi dan mosaik lahan sebagai sebuah kesatuan ekosistem. Permainan ini memadukan konsep manajemen bentang

alam yang berkelanjutan, konservasi, teori game dan kegembiraan Monopoly, SimCity, Ular tangga dan American Farmer.

Permainan ini menantang pemain-pemainnya untuk memaksimumkan penghasilan investasinya dan pada saat yang sama harus memperhatikan keragaman bentang alam, penyerapan karbon untuk mencegah pemanasan global dan penciptaan tenaga kerja.

Permainan ini menyediakan sarana untuk belajar memahami dampak berbagai kegiatan pada sebuah bentang alam dimana terjadi kompetisi penggunaan lahan, keragaman lama investasi, dinamika kebijakan dan gejolak pasar.

Pengambil kebijakan atau pemerintah dapat belajar bagaimana mempertahankan atau meningkatkaan kelestarian bentang alam dengan beragam aturan, pajak, insentif, dis-insentif dan tata guna lahan. Pembelajaran ini dapat memicu perubahan mental dan perilaku agar bertindak lebih ramah lingkungan.
