Beyond Root-Fifth Concepts: Expanding Bass Lines for Roots Bass Playing 13 to Adult | intermediate Instructor: Steven Fox Thursday, June 16: 6:30 – 9:00pm This course focuses on the theory and harmonic concepts that will enable you to create musically interesting bass lines that you, your band mates and your audience will love. While the simple Root-Fifth motion is the bedrock of all bass lines, we will take an in depth look at target notes and the different approaches to connecting chords, then apply these techniques to both instrumental and vocal pieces. This course ultimately provides you with the tools you need to create and ad lib harmonically engaging bass lines. Geared mostly towards intermediate students, this class will also benefit any beginner who has a strong grasp on all Root-Firth combinations. Both electric and upright players are welcome. Materials will be presented in both tabulature and standard notation. There are various fingerpicking styles in traditional musics, from the Delta Blue of the early 1900s, to the Piedmont blues, to the more modern “Thumb Picking” styles of Merle Travis. This course will touch on a number of these styles and will provide the students with written music and links to downloadable music files to help them learn these styles in their own practice times. Many workshops geared toward intermediate guitarists focus on teaching students techniques for playing better instrumental tunes, but this approach overlooks many essential skills for surviving in a band or group setting. In this session, we will focus on giving students a number of tips and tricks to practice, including how to effectively kick off and end tunes, how to construct an interesting melody-based solo on the fly, how to create fills, and how to back up other vocalists and instrumentalists.
