Message from the President

By Mark Fleischman, President of the Marina City Club Condominium Owners Association, Inc.

[email protected]

Dear Homeowners and Members,

In pursuing our goals to increase our property values and also enhance our lifestyleat the Marina City Club, I, together with the Board, thought it would be useful toshare our Mission Statement. This should be the basis of the Board’s actions over

the coming years to accomplish as many of the following as possible, in some casesby forming committees of homeowners, and working together with Essex andSeabreeze where our goals are mutual.

• First Class Pool areas with new California plantings observing a waterconversation program due to the drought.

• Security – to the best possible level with the improvement of front gateprocedures and additional video cameras.

• Emergency safety procedures in the event of earthquake, tsunami, or any otherdisasters such as terrorism. This could include Floor Captains who would volunteerfor emergency preparedness training and associated responsibility.

• Social Network plan and contemporary Web Presence on the Internet and DSSmailing of a new brochure to attract the additional 200 members allowableunder our by-laws to defray expenses and reduce short falls.

• Avoid costly and unnecessary lawsuits by handling issues with internal hearings. This may require by-law changes enabling the Board to better enforce the rulesand CC&Rs.

• Improve quality and service in the City Café.

• Operate efficiently, reduce waste wherever possible and save money withoutreducing services.

• Form a Political Committee to organize homeowners as a voting block (possiblytogether with other Marina HOAs) to influence local elections for the benefit ofresidents.

• Work with Club Council to enhance social programs.

• Hopefully get more homeowner participation in the affairs of the Marina CityClub.

This will be an ongoing program in which the Board hopes to have a positiveimpact on your home and Club.

desk, please walk by and take alook at the competitive matchesthat took place all over onegrueling Saturday. If you played, you lost weight and dealt with thenerves of tournament tennis. Ifyou watched, you saw somefantastic points and nail-biting

shots, as well as wonderfulsportsmanship by all the players.

In the end, Jacek & Nancytriumphed over Karen & Ziga 6-1, 6-0, however, the match was closerthan the score implies. Manygames went to deuce, but Jacekand Nancy were very steady andresolute on the big points. Ziga &Karen had to come through theback draw of our doubleelimination event, so were alsounderstandably tired after playingfive tight sets of tennis to arrive inthe final. For their part, Jaceksuffered a slight ankle sprain, butadjusted his movement

accordingly and played verysolid tennis with only three errorsin the final. Nancy handledZiga's big serve with solid returnsthat kept the big man bendingfor low volleys. Karen hit somehard, flat winners, but in the

end, Nancy and Jacek just gottoo many balls in play to bedenied the trophy.

All the matches were funand played in the best ofsporting spirits. Thanks again foranother wonderful Bring-a-Ringer Tournament and pleasehave your ringer for 2015 pickedout in advance so you too canparticipate next season!

T hey say that one ofthe secrets to life isknowing who you

are. Are you a leader or afollower? Are you lucky orunlucky? Are you anatheist or do you havefaith? You don't have toadmit who you are to theoutside world, in fact in manycases, it's none of their business. However, it sure helps to admitwho you are to yourself. The sameis true about one's tennis game.

Are you a baseliner or a serve-volleyer? Do you dictate play withhard, flat shots, or do you counter-punch and get every ball fromevery corner until the other playermakes an error? In some cases, myself included, there's the playeryou are, and there's the playeryou'd like to be. When you gointo a tennis match, you have tobe the player you are. Leave theplayer you'd like to be on thepractice court, she won't do youmuch good in the heat andpressure of a real match.

When you figure out what typeof player you are (an easy way isto look at professionals and pickthe person you play most like),embrace it. Most likely, there issomeone who plays like you andhas made the most of that game.Once you figure this out, buildyour game around your strengths. If you are short, do not spendoodles of time trying to serve ashard as John Isner, it is unlikely. Ifyou are very tall, good luck withmoving like Lleyton Hewitt.

Your physicality is the first clue. Most shorter players are baseliners

with consistency, placement, and tenacityas their primary weapons. When you hit the practicecourt, work on yourconsistency from bothwings. Seek to beat youropponents with yourweapons, rather than

trying to hit winners fromcompromising positions.Develop the ability to place yourserve on specific targets in thecorners of each service box aswell as into the body. This is notto say that you should notdevelop your power, just knowthat having the power ofsomeone who weighs 80 poundsmore than you and is a foottaller is unrealistic. You canfoster the tools to use biggerplayer's power against them, then take advantage of yourability to get that extra ball inplay and hit to their weaknesseswith your superior placement.

If you are a taller player with"easy power," then develop thatadvantage to the max. Developput away shots by working hardon your overhead and sittersnear the net. You do not wantto set up your opponent bypulling her off the court, thenmissing the "easy one" (hint:there are NO easy ones). Makesure that player who gets theextra ball back still faces anotherwinner. Minimize your errors, butrealize that your ideal rally is 5-10shots, not 20-30. Practice withthat in mind and develop drillsthat build that muscle, then youwill be all that you can be.
