Exzellenz verbindet –
be part of a worldwide network.
Prize money of up to five million EUR allows German universities to attract international
cutting-edge academics to Germany to carry out research and cooperate in the joint
development of new strategic research focus areas.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is granting
the award to leading international researchers from
all disciplines working abroad. On the recommendation
of German universities, the winners selected will be
appointed to an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship
in Germany.
Valued at up to five million EUR, the award enables
award winners to spend five years working on a ground-
breaking research project in Germany. The universities
themselves have the opportunity to offer international
top-flight academics an appropriate salary and finance
the creation of new research groups and structures.
The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship is being
financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Re-
search through the International Research Fund. Up to
ten awards are scheduled to be granted annually.
Nomination deadline: 2 June 2008

High Throughput Bioprocess DevelopmentTecan and Atoll have successfully integrated Atoll’s MediaScout 96-well RoboColumn system withthe Tecan Freedom EVO liquid handling workstation to allow fully automated bioprocess parameterscreening and high throughput screening of chromatographic resins. The combination simplifieshandling of a large number of samples and testing of chromatographic conditions during developmentof purification methods. MediaScout RoboColumns deliver the separation performance of regularready-to-use liquid chromatography columnswith very high reproducibility. These columns are offeredwith almost every adsorptive resin available and for multiple sample desalting applications with smallpore gel permeation chromatography materials. The configurable Freedom EVO workstation providesprecise and reliable liquid handling and accommodates a wide range of devices, including a platestackermodule and a roboticmanipulator arm to transfer 96-well plates into a plate reader. Integratingthe two technologies removes all manual steps for buffer preparation, sample injection, elution, anddetection, allowing 96-well plates to be completely processed in just minutes.

Chemistry Pumping UnitThe PC VARIO 3001 Chemistry Pumping Unit is a new generation ofdiaphragm pumping system for small- to medium-scale chemistryapplications including evaporation, sample concentration, drying, and distillation. The unit combines the proven performance andreliability, even in tough operating conditions, of its predecessor(PC VARIO 2001) with a new highly intuitive vacuum controller. Thenew controller saves time through simplified operation resultingfrom easy-to-use jog wheel operation and clear text menus. Throughproven low-vacuum chemistry pumping technology, the PC VARIO3001 sets the standard for reliability, reproducibility, efficiency, andlow operational noise in a compact benchtop unit. Providing vacuumdown to 2 mbar and a pumping speed of up to 1.7 m3/hour, the unitdelivers fast, continuously high evaporation rates, even with high-boiling-point solvents. The unit’s automatic boiling point detectionand anti-bumping technology mean that it is no longer necessary toconstantly monitor the process.Radleys

High-Capacity EvaporatorGenevac HT-12 Series II systems are designed to solve evaporationbottlenecks in high throughput and production laboratories. Thesystemsofferoptionsfor integrationintoautomatedenvironments, for
handling potentially explosive solvents, and for usewith strong acids.Applications include fast lyophilization, combinatorial chemistry, parallel synthesis, compound purification, plate reformatting, and plate replication requiring high throughput evaporation. Theunique design of the HT-12 multilayer rotor ensures efficient useof laboratory bench space. The HT-12 instruments incorporate thelatest scroll pump technology and do not require any pumping fluidor lubricant to operate, which makes the system suitable for use inharsh chemistry environments. The system incorporates a wide rangeof sample formats. The stainless steel rotors incorporate 12 “sampleswings” to accommodate sample holders for tubes, vials, microtiterplates, and custom sample formats.Genevac

Electrophoresis Interference RemovalPAGE-Perfect removes all interfering agents from protein solutions, allowing the samples to be reproducibly resolved on polyacrylamidegelswithhigherbandvisibility, greaterprotein resolution, andnobanddistortion. It is a simple two-step method for concentrating, cleaning, and preparing protein solutions for loading on gels. The user simplytreats the protein solution with the supplied reagents, resulting inthe precipitation of the proteins and removal of interfering agents. Itremoves detergents, salts, chaotropes, and reducing agents.G-Biosciences/Genotech
