Features
Brightspace Learning Environment
Activity Feed - Assignment Posts | New
Activity Feed now enables instructors to create assignment submission folders with an optional grade item, and post them to the feed as an assignment post. Assignment posts display the title, instructions, and due date of the assignment. The instructor view of assignment posts also includes how many learner submissions have been received. Learners can submit their assignments directly from the post, and monitor the status of their submission. Once a document has been uploaded, the learner’s "Submit" button changes color and displays either "Submitted" or "Graded", depending on its current status. Learners can also comment on assignment posts if they have questions, or want to start a discussion with their instructor and classmates.

Assignments - Instructors can set the visibility state for Assignment content | Updated
Instructors can now set the visibility state for draft content within assignment submission folders in Content and Assignments. When content is in a draft state, it is not visible to learners in Brightspace Learning Environment. When instructors have set the visibility to draft, the hidden icon appears in the instructor view of the assignment.
! Figure 6: When instructors have set the visibility to draft, the hidden icon appears in the instructor view of the assignment In Content, when an instructor chooses to add existing assignments as topics, the visibility state of the topic is pulled from the visibility state of the assignment. The visibility status of a topic now also reflects the visibility status of the folder in which the topic resides.

!
! Figure 8: The drop-down menu for content items offers the Hide From Users visibility state When an instructor creates a new assignment folder, the new folder defaults to the draft visibility state, in the same method as Quizzes, Surveys, and Discussions. When an import file of Content topics and assignment folders contains a mix of visibility states, all topics are changed to the draft visibility state. When an instructor updates a visibility setting for a topic in Assignments, it is automatically updated in the associated Content topic. If multiple assignment topics are associated with the same Assignment folder but have different visibility states, the visibility state of the assignment topic that has been created or most recently modified between Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.3 and 10.7.4 becomes the state of all associated topics. If the visibility state has not been modified (for example, for older courses), the state is set to draft. The export process now includes the visibility state for the assignment content. The visibility state for export comes from the Assignment folder. The import and Copy Course Component process for assignment and content topics follows the following logic:
• If the Import package contains a visibility state on the assignment folder, use that state.
! 11© 2017 by D2L Corporation. All rights reserved.
!
• If the package contains Assignment folders with no state and no associated content topics, the visibility state is to show the imported content.
• If the import package contains both content and assignment folders, use the visibility state on the folders. If no visibility state exists on the folder, use the visibility state from the content.
• If multiple content topics with the same visibility state point to an assignment folder without a visibility state, set the assignment folder to the same state as the topics.
• If multiple content topics with different visibility states point to an assignment folder without a visibility state, set the assignment folder to draft, and change all the topics to draft.
Brightspace Data Platform (BDP) – Available in Canada – AWS Enabled | New
As of this release, the Brightspace Data Platform (BDP) is available to both co-located and AWS-hosted D2L clients in Canada. The BDP stores raw events, and computes and stores aggregated data. Clients can use the BDP to collect this event-based data, which can be accessed through Brightspace Insights or Brightspace Data API.

Brightspace for Parents - Limited Availability in US and Canada | New
Brightspace for Parents is releasing with limited availability to clients in the US and Canada. This solution is targeted towards the K-12 segment. Brightspace for Parents uses the Holding Tank, IPSIS LIS 2.0, or OneRoster* SIS integration to create parent-child relationships in Brightspace Learning Environment. This allows authorized parents and guardians to view their child's class activity feed, portfolio items, and upcoming assignments, from their own parent account. Instructors can use this increase parent engagement, and improve learner success.
Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Slight system requirement impact for administrators because of a recommendation to review data residency policies.
Availability: This feature is available to co-located and AWS-hosted clients in Canada. To enable: Enablement of the BDP requires submitting a Service Request. Microservices Dependencies: The BDP depends on the Distributed Event Framework Service, the Landlord Service, and the Authentication Service. Microservices Locations: The BDP is available to Canadian clients in the following Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) locations: Canada Central (Montreal).
Contact your D2L Account Manager to submit a Service Request to enable the BDP. D2L recommends checking your organization’s policies regarding data residency, and consulting with your legal advisors. For detailed information regarding data residency, privacy, and transmission, refer to the updated Microservices in the Brightspace Cloud guide when it is released.

Brightspace Portfolio – Limited Availability of the new Brightspace Portfolio tool - AWS Enabled | New
This limited release of Brightspace Portfolio provides an online artifact space for classrooms and individual learners. Administrators and Instructors can create categories to tag evidence according to course learning objectives or other collections (such as All About Me for younger students). A unique identifier is available for each classroom, and for all the learners within the classroom. After Brightspace Portfolio is set up, instructors use a shared classroom device to scan a code to access their online classroom, and learners scan a unique identifier code to add a new artifact. Then, instructors and learners can use the Portfolio tool in the Brightspace Learning Environment to manage the information they have added to their Portfolios. With the new Brightspace Portfolio tool, learners can use the Portfolio app on a classroom device to capture images of their best work, and record an audio reflection about their work. Older students can also record reflections using the mobile Brightspace Portfolio app. These artifacts are saved directly to the cloud location set up for the classroom. Then learners can view

Brightspace Portfolio – New iOS and Android apps for collecting evidence and reflections | New
There are new Brightspace Portfolio iOS and Android apps to help learners create a record of their learning by guiding them to capture evidence and reflecting on the evidence they have captured. Before using the app, instructors must log into Brightspace. In the Portfolio tool, they print out classroom and student QR codes which are then used with the Brightspace Portfolio app on a shared classroom device, such as a tablet with a camera and microphone. Instructors select a classroom grade level. For kindergarten through grade 3, they can use Funster mode, where a creature guides learners to take a picture of their work and then record their thoughts with the microphone. For grades 4 and up, learners have more options, such as recording videos, and typing reflections instead of recording audio reflections. After evidence and reflections are saved, learners and instructors can use the Portfolio tool in the Brightspace Learning Environment to manage the evidence, add new evidence or reflections, and if Brightspace for Parents is being used, send alerts to parents that new content is available for their children.

Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Severe impact to K-12 users due to new product launch to replace existing ePortfolio offering.
The functionality of the iOS and Android app does not duplicate the functionality of the Portfolio tool in the Brightspace Learning Environment. The apps are the primary way to capture evidence, which is then managed in the Brightspace Learning Environment. Availability: This feature is being released to new Portfolio customers. The iOS and Android apps are available for download in all regions; however, they are intended for use with the Brightspace Portfolio tool in the Brightspace Learning Environment, which is available in limited release in Canada through AWS Montreal and the United States through AWS East. To Enable: Administrators must set up the Portfolio app on the classroom device. After the setup is complete, instructors use their QR code to access a classroom, after which learners can use their unique QR codes to save evidence and record reflections. Microservices Dependencies: The Brightspace Portfolio App depends on the Brightspace Portfolio tool in the Brightspace Learning Environment. For more information about the microservices dependencies and locations for the Brightspace Portfolio Tool in the Learning Environment, see Brightspace Portfolio – Limited Availability of the new Brightspace Portfolio tool – AWS Enabled | New. Microservices Location(s): N/A

Slight impact to administrators because of a tool change.
Availability: Brightspace Insights and Brightspace Core clients in the following regions:
• North America • EMEA • APAC
Microservices Dependencies: Authentication Service and Landlord Service. Microservices Location(s): Authentication and Landlord are services in the following Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) location: U.S. East (N. Virginia) For each Brightspace Data Set, the full CSV continues to generate on a daily basis. The add-on provides additional CSV updates, produced on an hourly basis, containing the differences (diffs) of the data that has been updated or inserted in the previous hour. Each diff is designed to keep the data set up-to-date with minimal overhead, and reduce the time it takes to produce an up-to-date extract to maintain hourly data freshness (depending on the data freshness level the client's package entitles them to). To address gaps in how data is generated for certain fields in Brightspace Data Sets, this release also introduces new fields to some of the affected data sets. For more information, refer to the updated Data Hub - Administrator Guide when it is released.
To enable the add-on for the Data Hub tool, contact your D2L Account Manager.

Lessons – Available in Canada – AWS Enabled | New
Lessons is now available to clients in Canada. Lessons is a new way for instructors and learners to experience the Content tool in Brightspace Learning Environment. It offers a simplified experience for organizing content, aligning to learning standards, managing the availability of course materials, and automatically scheduling content units as a pacing guideline. With Lessons, instructors can import from the Achievement Standards Network, and map content items to those standards. Instructors can also add their own materials from external sources, such as Google Drive, to supplement existing resources. To promote classroom engagement, the Lessons experience works with the Activity Feed, allowing instructors to easily post content materials to a course homepage.

Learning Outcomes Registry Service (LOReS) – Available in Canada – AWS Enabled | New
As of this release, the Learning Outcomes Registry Service (LOReS) is available to D2L clients in Canada. LOReS provides the ability to create and edit required learning outcomes for a course offering.
Lessons - Preview of learner experience in the Lessons tool | New
The Preview as student feature enables instructors to preview a typical learner experience in the Lessons tool.
Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Slight system requirement impact for administrators because of a recommendation to review data residency policies.
Availability: This feature is available to D2L Clients in Canada. To Enable: The LOReS service is enabled automatically. A call from the Brightspace platform is routed to the appropriate region based on its geographic location. Canadian servers are routed to AWS Canada Central. Microservices Dependencies: LOReS depends on Authentication Service and Landlord Service. Microservices Locations: LOReS is available to Canadian clients in the following Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) locations: Canada Central (Montreal). LOReS is also available in U.S. East (N. Virginia).
D2L recommends checking your organization’s policies regarding data residency, and consulting with your legal advisors. For detailed information regarding data residency, privacy, and transmission, refer to the updated Microservices in the Brightspace Cloud guide when it is released.

Release Conditions – Updated rules for instructors applying release conditions | Updated
When a new or existing condition is based on section enrollment, only the sections that the teacher is enrolled in appear in the drop-down menu. In various areas of the system, instructors can create a release condition or select an existing condition that specifies that a user must be enrolled in a particular section to access the content or activity. If the instructor is enrolled in all sections or has the Access all sections permission, they continue to see all sections in the list when creating the new condition. If the instructor does not have the Access all sections permission for their role, the instructor only sees sections they are enrolled in. As a result, instructors are better able to release content to their section of a course without impacting other sections.
Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Slight impact to instructors who can preview the Lessons tool as a typical leaner.
Availability: This feature is available to instructors. To Enable: N/A Microservices Dependencies: N/A Microservices Locations: N/A Preview as student does not demonstrate an experience for any particular user. Preview as student does not change the view of the embedded content (for example, if LTI content has different information for instructors and learners, instructors will continue to view the LTI content as an instructor). Navigating anywhere outside of the Lessons tool, for example, navigating to the Discussions tool, exits the Preview as student mode. The word student is currently not customizable.

SCORM - Content Service available in Canada - AWS Enabled | Updated
The Content Service is now available in AWS Canada Central (Montreal), which means the new SCORM solution is available in Canada as well.
Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Slight impact to instructors who are using the Section Enrollment release condition for course content. Instructors are now only able to see the sections in which they are enrolled.
Availability: This feature is available to all instructors who have the appropriate permissions. To Enable: Instructors can be enrolled in all sections or have the access all sections permission attached to their role; however, they are only required to be enrolled in sections where they want to use the Section Enrollment release condition. Microservices Dependencies: N/A Microservices Location(s): N/A
As a result of this change, instructors no longer see sections that they are not enrolled in as options when they are applying the Section Enrollment release conditions to course content. Other release conditions are not affected by this update.

Impact of Change
Technical Details Next Steps
Slight impact to administrators due to the Content Service being deployed to a new AWS region.
Availability: The Content Service, and thereby the new SCORM solution, is available to clients in the US, Canada, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, China, India, and Asia. To Enable: By default, the Content Service is off. When administrators enable the Content Service in the Config Variable Browser (d2l.Tools.ContentService.Endpoint), a call from the Brightspace platform is routed to the appropriate region based on its geographic location. The endpoint URL is set automatically based on location. Note: If administrators had already enabled the configuration variable and set the endpoint URL in a prior release, the region does not change automatically. To utilize the AWS Canada region, administrators must manually change the URL to reflect the Canada region. IMPORTANT: After the AWS region is specified and SCORM content is added, the region cannot be changed without data loss. However, if administrators change the endpoint and then revert to the one they had data stored in previously, it is possible to reclaim that data. Microservices Dependencies: This feature depends on the Authentication Service and Landlord Service. Microservices Location(s): The Content Service is located in the following AWS locations:
• U.S. East (N. Virginia) • EU (Ireland) • Asia Pacific (Sydney) • Canada Central (Montreal)
To make use of the Canada region for the new SCORM solution:
1. Ensure the Content Service is turned on in Organization Tools, and that users have the appropriate permissions.
2. In the Config Variable browser, set the d2L.Tools.ContentService.Endpoint configuration variable to on. The endpoint URL populates automatically, based on geographic location. Note: If you had previously set the endpoint URL to a region other than Canada, change the URL to reflect the Canada region, that is, https://api.ca-central-1.content-service.brightspace.com/.
For detailed information on data transmission for the Content Service, refer to the Microservices in the Brightspace Cloud guide at release.

!
PRB0052023
Previously, the WeightedGradesExport report incorrectly represented the weight of a grade item within a category. Now, the WeightedGradesExport report accurately represents the weight of a grade item within a category.
PRB0052021
Previously, the AllGradesExport report incorrectly represented the weight of a grade item within a category. Now, the AllGradesExport report accurately represents the weight of a grade item within a category. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
PRB0055058
Previously, in the Grade Objects data set, a join on the CreatedDate column caused grade objects to be excluded if there was no value in that column. CreatedDate was not set for grade objects copied from another course, which excluded a significant number of grade objects from this data set when copying courses to create grade objects. Now, the LastModifiedDate has been added to the Grade Objects data set, and a join on that column replaces the join on the CreatedDate column. Therefore, grade objects that were created through a copy process are no longer excluded from this data set. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.3.
Discussions
PRB0055033
Previously, in Grid View for the Discussions tool, if you marked a post as read, and then immediately as unread (or the other way around), the second action did not work and an error occurred. Now, in Grid View for the Discussions tool, you can successfully mark all posts as read or unread repeatedly, without error. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
PRB0055274
Previously, in Discussions, when a user replied to a discussion thread or post using Grid View, the expected discussion event was not created and data was not sent to the Brightspace Data Platform.
! 49© 2017 by D2L Corporation. All rights reserved.
!
Now, in Discussions, when a user replies to a discussion thread or post using Grid View, the expected discussion event is created and data is sent to the Brightspace Data Platform. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
PRB0055140 (Daylight)
Previously, in Brightspace Learning Environment with Daylight enabled, if a user enabled the option to see deleted discussion posts, there was no visual indication of which posts were active and which were deleted. Now, in Brightspace Learning Environment with Daylight enabled, if a user enables the option to see deleted discussion posts, the deleted posts are visually distinct from the active posts, as expected. Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.2.
ePortfolio and ePortfolio Mobile
PRB0053064
Previously, when a learner submitted an ePortfolio presentation to an assignment submission folder, there was no error message if the submission did not complete successfully. However, the system reported a file submission of size zero bytes. Now, when a learner submits an ePortfolio presentation to an assignment submission folder, an error message appears if the submission fails. Note: Timeout errors may still occur due to PRB005367, which is still an outstanding known issue. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
HTML Editor
PRB0055350
Previously, in HTML Editor, when you created content topics that used activity types, such as, Discussions, Assignment, and so on, if you pasted an image in the Description field, it appeared to save successfully but the image did not save. Now, in HTML Editor, when you create content topics that use activity types, such as, Discussions, Assignment, and so on, if you paste an image in the Description field, a message appears stating that image pasting is not supported. To insert a course image in these fields, users can still use the Insert Image or Insert Stuff buttons in the HTML Editor. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.

Import/Export/Copy Components
PRB0054912
Previously, when copying a course, if the source course had inherited the d2l.Tools.Grades.FinalGrade.AutoReleaseFinalGrade configuration variable by way of an organization-wide setting, the copy of this course had it set explicitly. Now, when copying a course, if the source course has the d2l.Tools.Grades.FinalGrade.AutoReleaseFinalGrade configuration variable set explicitly, the copy of this course also has it set explicitly. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
PRB0055451
Previously, in Brightspace Learning Environment, when you exported files and directories, file and folder names were converted to lowercase during the course export process. Now, in Brightspace Learning Environment, when you export files and directories, file and folder names retain their original letter case, as expected. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
Integrations
PRB0055047
Previously, external learning tool (LTI) APIs inaccurately took into account the value of the Create External Learning Tool Links from available External Learning Tool Providers permission and you might have observed that you were able to create and edit hidden links. Now, external learning tool APIs accurately take into account the value of the Create External Learning Tool Links from available External Learning Tool Providers permission. A user with this permission and not Manage External Learning Tool Links can successfully perform appropriate actions on LTI links using the API calls in addition to getting links as well as creating or updating LTI links that use an available Tool Provider. PRB0055015
Previously, when you used Role Switch in Lessons, your actions continued to reflect your logged in user/role, and not of the role you’ve switched to. Now, when you used Role Switch in Lessons, content is accurately displayed based on the role you’ve switched to. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
Quizzes
PRB0042579

PRB0055168
Previously, if you created short answer questions in Surveys using the new quizzing experience, the summary report did not properly group the answers according to blanks if there was more than one blank in a short answer survey question. The resulting summary report appeared to have more blanks than the question actually contained. Now, if you create short answer questions in Surveys using the new quizzing experience, the summary report properly groups the answers according to blanks if there is more than one blank in a short answer survey question. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4. To reproduce this fix:
1. Ensure the new quizzing experience is enabled in your instance of Brightspace Learning Environment.
2. In a course, access the Surveys tool. 3. Create a new survey. 4. Create three short answer questions, with one, two, and three blanks, respectively. 5. In the Restrictions tab, set the survey status to Active. 6. In the Reports Setup tab, add a report and assign it to the instructor role. 7. Save the survey. 8. Access Content and in a new module, add the survey you created. 9. Impersonate two different learners and take the survey as each one.

Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.

Previously, quizzes with the special access restriction, Allow only users with special access to see this quiz, had incorrect notifications. Learners with special access did not receive notifications when access to the quiz was going to end. In some cases, users without access to the special access quiz erroneously received email notifications for the special access quiz. Now, users with access to quizzes with the special access restriction, Allow only users with special access to see this quiz, receive email notifications when access to the quiz is going to end. Users without access to the special access quiz no longer receive email notifications for the special access quiz. Fixed in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.7.4.
