We realize that the Parent / Student / Teacher conference structure requires improvement to provide more access to appointments.

Suggestions from parents and teachers include:• A “Communications Week” where

parents may opt for a phone conversation, an email or a face to face appointment.

• Three Parent / Student / Teacherconferences from 3.30-6.30pm and one on Tuesday from 2.30-5.30pm

• On-linebookingsystemforappointments• Teachers in the gym instead of

classrooms• (We used to use the Hall and Library

beforetheExpansionprogram)• Years8and9ononeeveningandYears

10 to 12 on another.

The teachers began the “Literacy forLearning” course during the Tuesday 2.30-4.30pm Professional Development time. This course assists teachers of all subjectstoteachliteracy.Thecoursewillrunthroughout Term 2 including the P.D. day on the 1st July 2013.

The Student Free Day on 3rd May 2013 provided staff with opportunities tounderstand theAboriginal andTorresStraitIslander perspective in the AustralianCurriculum. 120 staff travelled by bus toWarriparinga, the Migration Museum, the MuseumandtheBotanicGardens.Laterthisterm therewill beaneveningpresentationin theBPAC for parents to understand theAustralian Curriculum and its underlyingstructure. We are considering an hour presentationfrom7.30-8.30pm.

The Expansion project is well underwaywhenyouseethevarioustrenches,fencesand heavy equipment. We ask parents torespectthe“NoDropOff”signstoassistthesafeflowofpedestrianandvehicleaccess.

The 400 seat Recital Hall is due forcompletion in 2013 and the 21stCenturyLearning Centre early 2014. ProfessorMartinWestwell from Flinders Universityis assisting us as a “critical friend”to establish appropriate pedagogy fortheCentre.

We are designing a brief for sculptors tocreate a befitting sculpture outside thenew centre. Please contact me by emailor phone (8375 8252 / 0422 005 085) ifyou would like to assist us with writingthebrief.

At the Formal, the professionalphotographers congratulated the students for their good manners, charm and etiquette. They told us they had never experienced such a pleasant group ofstudents.Congratulations to theYear 12’sand parents for your good parenting.

Visit by Renowned South Australian Author Dr Rosanne Hawke OnThursdayApril4,theCreativeWriters’Groupwastreatedtoanintensiveworkshopinthetechniquesofnarrativewritingby well-knownauthorRosanneHawke.Sheworkedwith24students (Years8–12)onthingssuchascreatingcharacter,inventingsuchspecificdetailsashowtheywalk.Wethoughtabouttheirgreatestfears,orwhatmakesthemtrulyhappyandthisnotonlyallowedustocreatedetailedcharacters,butitalsohelpedourstoryline.Rosannekeepsjournalstohelpherdothis,withresearch,drawingsandideasforeachnovel.Wewereabletoleafthroughthemandwereinspiretoreallyplanforanovelinthisway.

One ofmy favourite activitieswaswhen she handed out cardswith an emotionwritten on it to each of us.We couldn’t show anyone else andwehad towritea paragraph about a character feeling an emotion such as embarrassment, forexample.Wethenreadourparagraphsouttotheclass.IfoundthisveryusefulandIamcertainlygoingtodoitathome.Itfocusedourwritingontryingtofitascenewithone particular emotion in a story. This made my character much more real.

Talkingtomyfriendsafterwards,Ifoundweall lovedit.Wefelt itreallyimprovedourwritingskillsandtheywere,likeme,allgoingtobuyajournaltowriteideasin.Itwasalsoveryinspirationalasweareallveryfondofwritingandmanyofusaspiretobeauthorswhenwegrowup.RosanneHawke’sworkshopnotonlyhelpedmywriting,butinspiredmetoreadherbookstoo.WethankherprofuselyforcomingtoBrightonSecondarySchoolandteachingusnewwaystowrite.WearealsoverygratefultotheschoolfortheInquiryGrantthatmadethisworkshoppossibleandtoMrs Borgen-Smith for organizing it.

Music NewsTheMusic Department has had a number of very importantperformancesoverthelastfewweeks.TheBrighton Secondary School Concert Choir has performed at the ANZACDayDawnServicewhichwasheld at JettyRoad,Brighton. Itwaswonderful tohave95studentssingingbothAustralianandNewZealandNationalAnthems.WewerepleasedthatourstudentssangtheNewZealandAntheminMaori.

On9thMay,JeffreyKongtookagroupofourfinestYear9/10studentstoperformassoloistsattheAnnualAwardfortheVoluntaryWorkersfortheItalianOldFolksHomes.

BrightonSpecialMusicCentrehasbeen invitedtopresentaconcertattheItalianNationalDayon3rdJune.Thisisthe4thyearthatwehavebeenhonouredwiththispresentation.TheBrightonSecondarySchoolConcertChoiralongwithOldScholarHannahGreenshieldswillperformthemosttreasuredmusicbyVerdi.Youmayknowthatthisisthebi-centenaryofVerdi’sbirth.

A1 Interschool AthleticsFrom our recent success in Interschool Athletics, BrightonSecondarySchoolhas“reapedtherewards”andbeenpromotedthroughthreedivisions inasmanyyears:fromB1,toA2andnowA1.TheA1divisionisthehighestintheSecondarySchoolSportSouthAustralia (SSSSA)StateAthleticsChampionshipswherewenowcompeteagainstthebestofthebestinAthleticsfromGovernmentandIndependentSchools.Competinginahighlycompetitivedivision,weaskedourstudentstoperformtothebestoftheirability.Asthisisateamevent,everyresultandpointscoredisvaluable.

Throughout the day we had a number of outstanding performances from ourexperiencedathletesinYear12suchasRileyCocks,rightthroughtoournewathletesinYear8suchasGwenHumpreysandCaitlinFrancis.

Wehadmanystudentsperformpersonalbestsontheday;someevenhadmorethanone,which isanexcellent result.Somestudentswereapproached todoanextraevent,whichtheywherewillingtodoforthebenefitoftheteam.

Outdoor PursuitsCanoe CampOnWednesday8thMaytheOutdoorPursuitsclasspackedtheirgearintoatrailerandhoppedonthebusreadyandexcitedforourexpeditiontoKatarapkocreek,locatedinthebackwatersoftheMurrayRivernearLoxton.Thethreedayweatherforecastwasfor28degreesandlightwinds,absolutelyperfectcanoeingconditions.The group has been planning for this expedition for over aterm.Inclassthegroupbondedbycompletinggroupdynamicstasks, studying first aid, risk management, navigation androuteplanning.Wefamiliarisedourselveswiththeequipmentatschoolbysettingupthetents,cookingonthetrangiasandestablishing a menu plan with a partner. Good preparationprovidedusthebestopportunityforasuccessfulexpedition.

After a four hour bus drive we arrived at Lock 4, practicedsome canoe paddling techniques then packed our gear intothe canoes.Wewaved goodbye to the bus for three days,travelledthroughthemassiveLockandbeganouradventure.TheMurrayRiverwasglassy,theweatherwaswarmandourspiritswere high.We arrived at camp and set up our tentsjust before sunset, lit the fire, then sat around and cookedour meals on the trangia. Pretty soon the stars came out and therewerejustsomany.WewentforanightwalkandfoundaplacetolieonthebanksofKatarapkocreekandwatchthem.We sawfive shooting stars,whichwe took as a good signforourtrip.Backatthecampfireweplayedspotlight,cookedmarshmallowsandmadeupstories.

OndaytwowealmostpaddledthelengthofKatarapkocreek.The group supported each other and we changed aroundpaddlingpartnersasneeded.Westoppedatlunchandtookanenvironmentalwalktounderstandmoreabouttheenvironmentwewerelivingin.Thepaddlewasachallenge,butwewereallreallyhappyandsatisfiedwhenweachievedit.Thatnightthegroupfeltreallycloseandconnected,aswesharedourlikes,dislikesandwhatwehadlearntthroughouttheexpedition.

Weawoke to a beautiful sunrise, hadbreakfast, packedourcanoesandleftKatarapkocreektore-entertheMurray.Whenwereachedourdestinationweallfeltasenseofachievement.Itwasagreatexperience,wehadsomefantasticmemoriesandsuccessfullycompletedourminimalimpactexpeditionby“leavingonlyfootprintsandtakingonlyphotos.”

Vocational Evaluation ProgramTheRotaryClubofBrightonrecentlydeliveredtheVocationalEvaluationProgramtotheYear12 studentswho are enrolled in the Year 12WorkplacePracticesclass.

The students had towrite a Letter ofApplication, prepare a Resume andparticipate in amock interviewwith apanel of Rotary Club members. Theirapplications and performance wereassessed and helpful feedback wasprovidedtothestudents.Awinnerwasthen selected. This was the persondeemedtohavepresentedthebestLetterofApplication,the best Resume and who performed well in the mockinterview. This years’ winner is CONNOR GRUNDLE.Connorwas presentedwith a trophy at the Rotary ClubDinner on 20th May.

Bonus Points From UniSAUniSA has a bonus points program call UniSAAdvantage. TheUniSAAdvantageprogramoffers two different types of bonus points:Aspire and Achievement.

Not all Brighton Secondary School students who applytoUniSA for2014entrywill beeligible to receiveAspire bonus points. However, individual students who are inreceiptofYouthAllowance,HealthCareCard,LowIncomeHealthCareCardand/orSchoolCardbenefitsshouldvisitthe UniSA website at unisa.edu.au/bonuspoints and downloadanapplicationform.

AllstudentsatBrightonSecondarySchoolmaybeeligibleto receive Achievement bonus points, depending on thesubjectstheyhavechosentostudyinYear12.

AllYear10studentsweregivenaWorkExperiencePackearly in Term 1. This pack contains all the informationrequired forwork experience. All forms are due back by31st May.

OnWednesday8thMay,BrightonSecondarySchool opened its doors to provide an opportunityformembersofourcommunitytovisittheschool,talkwithstaff,viewstudentsworking inclassroomsandobtain informationaboutthemanyprogramsweoffer.Overthecourseofthedaytherewere3schooltoursconducted,withwellover600people taking theopportunity toviewourfacilities. On the day therewere a number of studentswhooffered their time to conduct tours around the school. These guidesreceivedsomepositivefeedbackandexpressedgenuineenthusiasminshowingthevisitorsallthatBrightonhastooffer.

Following the tours, the Principal’s Address highlighted thesuccesses of the school, and the future directions for Brighton. Threeyear8speakersgaveapersonalviewoftheirfirstyearatBrightonSecondary,givinganinsightintohowtheyappliedand were accepted into the school’s Music and Volleyballprograms.Theyalsospokeabouttherangeofextra-curriculaactivities on offer for mainstream students.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, backed by the CurriculumLeaders and staff who put many hours into preparing theirareas for our visitors.
