Math ClassesBy Dr. R. Pletsch The American schoolsystems were founded onthe idea that education isthe hope of the lowerclass. Whether they benew immigrants, nativeAmericans or formerslaves. They must alllearn the three R's --Reading, 'Riting and'Rithmetic. This mayseem a little old now, butour founding fathers weresome of the few that actu-ally knew how to read. Now one of these coreslooks nothing like whatwas envisioned -- Math. Most of us know whenaddition, subtraction andmultiplication facts werememorized. This not onlyhelped with the practicalend of Math, but trainedour brains how to memo-rize. We now have manysupposed educated peoplewho find this unneces-sary, after all, we all havecomputers and calcula-tors. I have known manyparents who feel intimi-dated by Math. They hadoften told me when I wasa high school Mathteacher that Math wastheir worst subject. Theydon't know how they willhelp their child. We alsohave people at the Statelevel that believe the moreMath a high school stu-

dent gets, the better edu-cated they are. In simpleterms, I believe we woulddo much better by stress-ing the integration ofReading and Math. The standardized testsour students are givenhave less and less compu-tation and involves moreword problems. So, if youcan't read, you don't dowell in Math. The samepoliticians who controlour school boards keepchanging the teachingstandards for Math teach-ers. In the Middle Schools,a Math endorsement isvery useful because it in-cludes a practical exam tosee if the teacher knowsthe subject. To constantly addclasses to the require-ments of the high schoolteacher makes no practi-cal sense. because theupper level universityMath classes are seldom,if ever, needed at any highschool. The poorest profes-sor I had in college was a25 year old with a Doctor-ate in Math, who somemight judge as a genius, but he couldn't teach orunderstand that weweren't on the same levelhe was. It's like in base-ball, Ted Williams, whomany consider the great-est hitter of all time, wasa terrible manager. Hecould not understandthose with less ability. So principals need tolook at teaching ability, not at grades on a tran-script when hiring Mathteachers. Parents shouldbe vigilant that thesebasic skills aren't forgot-ten so that no one in yourfamily is that young per-son at the cash registerwho doesn't know what todo if you hand them thechange after the registershows how much changethey are to give out. ___________________
