Farmers provide fresh produce to guests at 6th Annual Market Day By Lou Ellen Bromley [email protected]
Several of Brighton’s local farmers brought their fresh vegetables to sale last Saturday, at the 6th annual Market Day, making the day a fun way to purchase fresh produce.
Visitors also could buy freshly grilled Sakata sweet corn-on-the-cob and fresh roasted peaches to eat while exploring the many booths displaying merchandise and crafts for sale in the Artisan Fair area,
as well as the Market Day produce.Volunteers’ at the Rotary Club booth
commented they had sold more roasted corn and peaches than in previous years. The heritage of Brighton’s farming history was well represented with produce from Patrocco Farms, Lulu’s Farms, Plizzi Farms and Lora Epps Nourishing Produce.
The Artisan Fair area had several booths displaying items for sale and information for upcoming events in the Brighton area. Brighton Legacy Foundation is planning a Historic Downtown walking tour for Sept. 5 and were offering tickets for sale at their booth, while across the parking lot Hen-derson Community Church was passing out fl yers for its 54th annual Roast Beef Dinner at the church on Oct. 4.

State shines in two economic reports Not good enough, says Beauprez campaign By Vic Vela [email protected]
Colorado’s economic outlook is bright, as indicated by two business reports released last week.
The state’s unemployment rate ticked down slightly in July, and Colorado expe-
rienced its 33rd consecutive month of job gains.
And, on the heels of those statistics, a busi-ness website ranked Colorado No. 1 on its list of state economies.
Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper greeted the eco-nomic news with tempered opti-mism.
“While our
economy continues to be recognized as the fastest-growing in the nation, we know there is still much work to be done,” the governor said through an emailed statement. “We are focused on ensuring we foster a positive busi-ness climate — whether a start-up or Fortune 500 company — and retaining our talented workforce.”
The unemployment numbers released by the state Department of Labor and Employ-ment show that 3,500 non-farm jobs were

Feathered creatures ying high Barr Lake Fall Birding Festival on tap By Michelle Boyer [email protected]
Birders of a feather come together on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 7 a.m. to noon for the 16th year of the Fall Birding Festival at Barr Lake State Park, 13401 Picadilly Road.
“This is held during the migration of the birds,” Barr Lake State Park Manager Michelle Seubert said. “This is a unique time … kind of the “Bed and Breakfast” time when birds are stopping over that normally won’t be here.”
Seubert said enthusiasts may see a green winged teal (duck), common tern, Virginia rail among many of the fall migrating birds.
First thing in the morning visitors will be able to see the migratory bird banding sta-tion at its best.
“This is the time when people from Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory will catch the bird, weigh them, measure and band them,” she said. “This is when people get to see the birds really up close.
“Explore Barr Lake’s trails guided by the re-gion’s best birders. If there are individuals not able to walk the trails, there will also be an Eagle Express shuttle tour provided with the

Death penalty sounds in election Beauprez criticizes Hickenlooper in Dunlap decision By Vic Vela [email protected]
Death penalty politics resurfaced in the gubernatorial race last week on the heels of comments made by Gov. John Hickenlooper during a recent television interview.
But political observers wonder just how much voters actually care about capital punishment in relation to other issues, and what impact, if any, the death penalty debate will have come Novem-ber.
Hickenlooper confirmed to KDVR-TV on Aug. 18 what many believe has been the case for a while — that he’s changed his mind over the years and is now against the death penalty.
“There’s no deterrence to having capi-tal punishment,” Hickenlooper said dur-ing the interview.
The governor said he had been a death penalty supporter his entire life until
factors, such as the high cost of putting someone to death, started to turn his mind around on the issue.
“And, I don’t know about you, but when I get new facts, I change my opin-ion,” said Hickenlooper, who told voters four years ago that he was in favor of the death penalty.
Hickenlooper has had to deal with questions about his views on capital punishment since last year, when he chose to grant a temporary reprieve for death row inmate Nathan Dunlap, who was convicted of murdering four people at an Aurora Chuck E. Cheese’s restau-rant in 1993.
Republicans have attacked Hicken-looper for failing to see through Dunlap’s execution. The death penalty issue has been used by former Congressman Bob Beauprez, who is running against Hick-enlooper this fall, as a way to call out the governor for his “failed leadership” on the issue.
“If he truly does oppose the death penalty, he should have commuted Na-than Dunlap’s sentence instead of leav-ing the decision to the next governor,” Beauprez said through a press statement. “As Colorado’s next governor, I will see
that justice is served.”Eddie Stern, a spokesman for Hick-
enlooper’s campaign, said the governor “made a decision knowing it wouldn’t be a popular decision, but it is the right de-cision.”
Stern also said it is important to re-member that the governor granted a re-prieve, not clemency for Dunlap.
“At that time, he explained why he felt a temporary reprieve was more impor-tant than clemency,” Stern said.
Issue may not sway votesBut will voters care about Nathan
Dunlap and the death penalty come No-vember?
“When you look at voters, in particu-lar, independents, and when you look at list of concerns they have, you’re not go-ing to find the death penalty on that list,” said Norman Provizer, a political science professor at Metropolitan State Univer-sity of Denver.
“It’s a hot topic and the Beauprez cam-paign is trying to make an issue out of it, but I don’t think it’s a high priority issue.”
John Straayer, a political science pro-fessor at Colorado State University, said
“a lot of people have been changing their mind on the death penalty” over the years. And Straayer wonders if Beauprez is simply trying to energize voters who are already inclined to vote for him.
“It might be being done to the advan-tage of appealing to his own party,” he said. “But I just wonder whether they’re getting a lot of traction out of that be-yond the base of their own party.”
Provizer said voters care more about Colorado’s improved economy than is-sues like the death penalty.
“If I were a candidate and I had a choice between being attacked on the death penalty or unemployment being down to around 5 percent, it wouldn’t be a question of what I would choose,” Provizer said.
Still, a polarizing issue like this one could have on an impact on at least a small percentage of the electorate — per-haps enough to flip a tight election.
“I think we all understand, in any close election, little things can make an enormous difference,” Provizer said. “I can say the death penalty question is not a major issue, but in a close election, it could make a difference.”

Even cowboys ride buses. My large family has been ranching for generations and I keep my hand in the business when I’m not driving the Express bus between Boulder and Denver or SkyRide to Denver International Airport. I’ve been at the wheel for 16 years – 15 of them accident free. Cattle and horse drives can be challenging. But driving people? That’s a whole other commute!

OPINIONY O U R S & O U R S
Eventualism and the fullness of time I have done many stupid things in my
life — I might have mentioned that before. Most of these stupid things, thank God, have not led to terrible consequences. Nonetheless, in retrospect, there are many things I would do differently, if I could.
The unfortunate problem with that is changing any one of those acts could have a ripple effect in my life which would result in a completely different life. It’s impossible to pull at the loose strings of the tapestry of your life without unraveling other parts of the picture. Suppose I had taken a job opportunity way back when that I’ve always wondered about — that probably means I wouldn’t have been at the event where I met my wife, which means that my children would never have been born. Even if that job opportunity had led to amazing things for me, it also would have led to some things that are unthinkable to me today.
That is what makes me, philosophically speaking, an “Eventualist.” I don’t even know if that’s a real thing, to be honest; I might have just made that up. And, if it is real, well, cool. At any rate, the “Eventual-ist” school of thought holds that the good or bad of every act, regardless of its intent, can only be truly measured in the fullness of time when all the eventualities have played out.
That is what worries me about our reaction to the fl ood of illegal immigrant children that have hit our southern border in the last many months. My immediate
thought with regard to those children is, as I think it is for most, compassion — to consider how terrifying it must have been to make that journey all by themselves, to wonder just how horrible the conditions were that they left behind, and just how useless are the government bodies they left behind that make such a journey even worth considering. Our instinct is to take care of them. But is that the right thing to do, eventually?
Let me put it to you this way: last week, a Florida mom was arrested for leaving her 9-year old child playing alone at a playground. As we approach the two-year anniversary of the murder of Jessica Ridge-way, I know very few parents who leave their children alone to play outside for 15 minutes at a time, much less send them on a “quest.” And yet, there are parents all throughout Central and South America who have put their children on buses, trains, or in the care of complete strangers to complete a 1000-plus mile journey from home to the southern border of America.
We know that some of them don’t make it — the bodies have washed up on the shores of the Rio Grande. Others don’t make it because they get sold into slavery before they ever get close to our shores.
And yet, their parents are still sending them. There must be a reason.
What if the “eventual” outcome of all our compassion, all our aid and assistance to these children (and, yes, all of our ignor-ing of our own laws), is simply that we are encouraging other parents to send other kids on that terrible journey into the un-known. An act that would get an American parent arrested is being quietly made a vi-able option for Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and others because of the possibility that they’ll make it here, and be allowed and assisted to stay.
It’s a diffi cult question. Any “compre-hensive” plan to address it had better deal with the fact that there is, apparently, not one functioning government between El Paso and Brazil. But don’t be fooled into thinking that compassion must be our default position, so that we can rest easily afterwards having “done something.” The eventual result of that may be unthink-able.

Will the Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl this year? The 2014 NFL season is offi cially here! And even though many in Broncos County are still hurting from the beatdown that the Seattle Seahawks put on Denver, it is time to put it last season the rearview mirror because it’s a new year.
“Absolutely! They almost won the Super Bowl last year but they just had too many mistakes that caught up with them. But we will forget all that after we win this year. Go Broncos!”
Flora Simental, Aurora
“I am not sure because I thought they were going to win it the last two years. I hope that they do and wish them the best. But I don’t want another repeat of last season.”
Patricia Roybal, Arvada
“I think this is the year they nally get it done. Those pain-ful ends to the last two seasons are just going to make this Super Bowl even sweeter.”
Marcus Ice (and his son, Nicholas),
Littleton
“I think they have a chance to win it all but the Seahawks and the 49ers will be tough to beat. And Peyton Manning can’t play forever. I’m not sure …”

added in July. That growth allowed the state’s unemployment rate to drop from 5.5 percent to 5.3 percent.
That’s the lowest unemployment rate the state has seen since October 2008, just when the Great Recession was kick-ing in.
Meanwhile, the website Business In-sider ranked Colorado’s economy as the best in the nation.
The influential business website used eight metrics to determine its rankings, with Colorado ranking in the top 10 in five of them.
Business Insider cited Colorado’s “highly diversified” economy as a key factor in its top ranking, which includes a healthy aerospace sector and the state’s “huge amount” of federal invest-ment.
The website also factored in the state’s growth in job creation and in its
working-age population.The unemployment numbers and
the business report come as good news to Hickenlooper, who is seeking re-elec-tion in the fall. The governor has touted the state’s improving economic health as his primary campaign strategy.
But the campaign behind his oppo-nent this November, Republican Bob Beauprez, a former congressman, said things could be a lot better for Colora-dans.
The Beauprez campaign points to evidence of sluggish economies in rural parts of the state as an indication that Hickenlooper and Democratic lawmak-ers have little interest in focusing on improving economies outside of the Denver metro area.
“Certainly there are signs that after this prolonged recovery there are some signs of life,” said Allen Fuller, com-munications director for the Beauprez campaign. “But, for a lot of Colorado families, recovery hasn’t come to their doorstep yet.”

Loom for a purpose Fundraiser to help Talan Nichols who’s ghting cancer By Michelle Boyer [email protected]
Talan Nichols wants to be a doctor when he grows up to fi gure out why things like cancer happens to people and wants to make it stop.
The 8-year-old has been fi ghting brain tumors since he was 3. He has pilocytic as-trocytoma.
Talan is on his fourth month, out of 26 months of chemotherapy. His grandmother Carole Nichols said he’s swallowing seven pills every morning. He has to take Zofran fi rst, a medication to help calm his stomach hoping that he won’t get sick after he’s taken his chemo.
“Talan doesn’t let cancer slow him down, although it does in turn affect his energy levels and poops him out easily,” Nichols said. “He’s such a loving and nurturing kid. He’s stuck up for other kids at his school who get bullied.”
The medical bills have continued to mount and Nichols wants to help Talan and his mother in support to do a Loom-a-Thon.
“This fundraiser will not only benefi t Ta-lan, but another child named Max Wilford who also suffers from a different kind of brain tumor,” she said.
Nichols said she told Talan about Max and how he’s been working on setting the world record for the longest loom. “Talan just loves to loom,” she said. “We want to loom to see how long we can get our looms and send them to Max, who currently is try-ing to beat his 5 ½ mile record he complet-ed in March.”
On Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Platte Valley will hold a Loom-a-Thon for Talan.
People are invited to come loom, bring
rubber bands or just come to make a dona-tion. Looming may also be completed at home and people can drop their fi nished looms off to be sent to Max.
Nichols said there will be a small prize given for the longest loom.
All money donated will go directly to Children’s Hospital and not into the pa-tient’s hands. The money will go 100-per-cent to help with Talan’s medical bills.
To donate to Loom-a-Thon or for more information contact Carole Nichols at [email protected] or visit Facebook page: LoomforacureBrighton.
Brighton United Methodist Church will also host a Carnival Fundraiser for Talan on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information email [email protected] or [email protected].

“Witness the wonderful grace of rap-tors on the wing in this presentation of Raptor Flight presented by Hawk Quest,” she said.
Facepainters, along with crafts geared toward birds will be available for the chil-dren 9 to Noon. The Denver Zoo, Green-wood Wildlife, Wild Birds Unlimited,
Wind Song, Dinosaur Ridge, Denver Field Ornithologists, Rocky Mountain Bird Ob-servatory and the Wild Animal Sanctuary will have educational booths at the event.
Discover birds and bird feeding with Wild Birds Unlimited experts Scott and Dave Menough. There’ll also be time to explore great binoculars and scopes, as well as other birding supplies.
A sunset tour into the wildlife refuge by a park naturalist will be at 5 p.m.
“It’s a great family event to come out and learn about migration, and the birds that call Barr Lake home,” Seubert said. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to see bald eagles and raptors up close.”
Admission to the Fall Birding Festival is $7 per vehicle into the park or an annual State Park pass.

Girls’ hoops camp invites youthBrighton High School girls basketball camp for h through eighth gradesBy Michelle [email protected]
It’s time to shoot hoops at Brighton High School’s first ever Back-to-School girls’ bas-ketball camp.
All fifth through eighth grade girls are in-
vited to the two day camp on Sept. 12 at 6 to 9 p.m., and on Sept.13 at from 9 a.m. to noon. at Brighton High School.
There wasn’t a basketball camp hosted by BHS this summer, as the gym floors were be-ing redone.
“This camp is geared towards fifth- through eighth-graders who are looking to improve their basketball skills and have fun doing it,” BHS girls basketball Coach Dan Doehler said. “Our hope is that players from this camp will then tryout to play in our feeder team system in October.”
The cost of the camp is $50. “Money raised from the camp goes directly back into the high school program to offset the cost of running the program,” he said.
All participants of the camp will receive a free T-shirt. The money raised from the camp goes directly back into the high school pro-gram to offset the cost of running the pro-gram.
Fastbreak drills, individual defense, team defense, shooting, free throws, rebounding, ball-handling, passing and setting/receiving screens all bring the skill set focus to the camp.
Competition will also be a part of the camp including, hot shot, camp knockout, team de-fense, elbow lay-ups, dribble relays and a free-throw contest.
A select few high school basketball ath-letes, along with the Brighton High School girls’ basketball staff and feeder program coaches will run the camp.
For more information on the basketball camp contact Dan Doehler at [email protected] or 303-217-0541.
Volleyball, spiking continued successBrighton and Prairie View High School volleyball programs show strengthBy Michelle [email protected]
One of the major goals of the Lady Daw-gs’ volleyball program is to advance to the state playoffs for the second year in a row.
“We’re very fortunate to not have lost a ton of girls last year, and want to continue to build on the momentum from 2013,” BHS Coach Meghan Law said. “We’re set-ting the bar high for this season. We have a really tough schedule this year, but are looking forward to playing strong compe-tition every night. We’d also like to be the conference champs for the East Metro Ath-letic Conference.”
This is Law’s second year with Brighton’s volleyball program.
“I’m also pleased to say that I’ll have all three of last year’s assistant coaches return-ing to the program: Ashley Reynolds, Deb-bie Cutler and Kelli Rhodes. We’re welcom-ing Justin Adcock as a volunteer coach,” she said. “We are also fortunate to have the strong support of Todd Potestio, BHS ath-letic director and Principal John Biner. Our parents are the best. Without their support day in and day out, we’d not be the team we are today.”
Kendra Swackenberg, Tori Ratliff, Rars-ingchon Kashung and Kate Meyer are the
seniors on the team this year. Karysa Swack-enberg, Maddie Cloutier, Erika White, Sarah Shively, Samantha King, Brianna Hernan-dez, Shaylee Befus and Kaylin Lillard finish out the varsity line-up.
Law said Brighton has two games that are going to be big for the program due to the strong competition, which comes with Prairie View and Rangeview.
“We’ll have to compete as the guest team for both of those matches,” she said. “An-other team that is good in our conference is Gateway.
“We have a great group of young ladies who’ve really improved from last year. This year’s team could be one of the most com-petitive this program has seen in recent years. Their energy and skill level will be en-tertaining for all to watch.”
Prairie View welcomes Coach Amy Shoe-maker this season.
“My goals as a coach and as a team this year coincide with each other,” she said. “I want them to learn how to bring their individual talents and skills, to put both together in order to play as a team. To be strong, mentally tough, hardworking, never give up, go after everything and to be a dis-ciplined team. Teams that can accomplish this usually go far in their season, and are complimented on by other teams. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of teams this year, they’ve come a long way since I first got them in June.”
Quincy Balaun, Lexi Kite and Makayla Maniscalco are the seniors on the Prairie View team. Kelsie Antcliff, Dylann Balaun,
Stephanie Erives, Lauren Gonzales, Bianca Asheim, Serena Bruin, Maya Baca, Jourdin Thompson and Macy Thomas round out the varsity team.
“All teams we play this year are chal-lenges in their own ways,” Shoemaker said. “We’re looking forward to the BHS/PVHS game, because of the rivalry and commu-nity that comes out to support either team. You really see school spirit at this match, and anytime that happens it’s a great thing.”
Over the summer the Prairie View team competed in the Cherry Creek Tournament and made it into the Gold Bracket, one be-low the Championship Bracket.
Prairie View would like to thank Brom-ley Express Car Wash for allowing the team to have a car wash fundraiser a couple of weeks ago.
“It was very successful and we’re now able to buy two new nets,” Law said.
The Lady Dawgs will have a Serve-A-Thon today. “We’d love the community’s support, and are accepting donations that will be used to help fund new equipment for the program,” Law said. “To donate, contact one of the players or Coach Law at [email protected].
Brighton opens up their regular season at Greeley West on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m. and their first home game is Friday, Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. against Heritage.
Prairie View opens their season with a tournament at Silver Creek on Saturday, Sept. 6, with the time still pending. The team’s first home game is Monday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. against Greeley West.

T-Hawks seek 2013 repeat Prairie View High School football starts season Friday By Michelle Boyer [email protected]
After winning the East Metro Athletic Conference Championship and advancing to the State 5A playoff last year, the Thunderhawks football team is ready to do it all over again this season.
Prairie View finished its 2013 season 7-3 overall, and was 5-0 in leagues. The team lost its first playoff game to Grandview, but made school history for advancing to the playoffs and winning a league championship in its seven-year history.
Coach Todd Riccio is back for his third year. He said his No. 1 priority is to win that playoff game this year, and to of course take the league title again.
“All the teams we play against this season, we’re look-ing forward to competing against,” he said. “We as a football team take every game and every team as a new challenge every week and a new obstacle that we must overcome to achieve to reach our goals.”
Returning seniors to the Prairie View roster are Matt McConnell-center; Seth Gulley-guard; Cody Mitchell-tackle; Zach Peterson-tight end; Tavish Whelan- wide receiver; RJ Ramirez- running back (1249 rushing yards in 2013); Jeremy Velasco full back, Brandon Sanchez linebacker; AJ Prestopino-linebacker; Mitch Ortega- linebacker; Ben Burnett- defensive line; Skyler Sever-ance- defensive line; Israel Morales- defensive line; Cory Orr- defensive line; Torin Saldivar- defensive line and Sean Rodarte- defensive back.
“We’re a young team in some key spots, but still have great key pieces to build around,” he said. “We’re always growing the program and are always trying to build depth.”
Riccio said this season’s defensive line, secondary and offensive skilled positions are strong. “We’re im-proving everyday on the offensive line where we lost three key student athletes to graduation last year, and our younger players are stepping into and filling those positions nicely. With more reps and experience under their belt, we should be in great shape by the time we start league play.”
He said the Brighton game means a lot to the team. “It’s a rivalry game, and they get to play against friends and people they’ve grown up with,” Riccio said. “It’s a great atmosphere and our kids love playing in it. Both communities get behind this game and come out in full support of it every year, it’s a great thing.”
During their offseason, this summer Prairie View attended a team camp at Colorado State University in Pueblo. They continued their conditioning with weight lifting also during the summer.
Their major fundraising just ended, but Riccio said the team is always looking for sponsors for team meals and donations to keep the kids in helmets and shoulder pads.
“We’re looking forward to this upcoming year, and have high expectations again for our team and our pro-gram as a whole,” he said.
The Thunderhawks open their season at Horizon Fri-day at 7 p.m. Their first home game is Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. against Mountain Range.

County, cities reach temporary agreementMunicipal inmate cap at county jail raised to 65By Tammy Kranztkranz@colorado communitymedia.com
Adams County and five of its munici-palities have reached a temporary agree-ment regarding the inmate jail cap law-suit.
The parties have agreed to delay any litigation until May 15, 2015.
The agreement allows for additional municipal inmates — a total of 65 — to be housed at the Adams County Detention Facility. The municipalities agreed to pay the daily fee for any inmate exceeding that cap. Domestic-violence offenders do not count against that cap.
“We are pleased that this temporary agreement will provide additional access for municipal inmates,” said Thornton Mayor Heidi Williams. “This issue has been worked on for years now, and we ap-preciate the efforts of those who negoti-ated this resolution.”
The cities of Thornton, Northglenn, Au-rora, Commerce City and Federal Heights filed a joint complaint on Feb. 19 against the Adams County Board of Commission-ers and Sheriff Doug Darr for restricting or refusing to house municipal prisoners in the county jail. The board of commission-ers includes Eva Henry, Charles Tedesco and Erik Hansen.
The board of commissioners approved a cap restriction on municipal inmates, which was enacted Jan. 1, 2012, to help ease financial constraints at the county jail. The cap was set at 30 and was divid-ed among nine cities: Thornton, eight; Westminster, five; Aurora and Commerce City, four apiece; Northglenn and Brigh-ton, three each; and one each for Federal Heights, Arvada and Bennett.
Darr said with this new agreement, the cities would not have an individual cap. The Sheriff’s Office will email the cities with a daily municipal inmate list, and if the cap has been exceeded, the cities must decide to either release one or more inmates or pay the $45 daily fee for each inmate exceeding the limit. The fees col-lected go into the Adams County general fund, not the Sheriff’s Office budget, Darr said.
“I really do believe the agreement set a good foundation for our future opera-tions,” he said.
Darr said that because the Sheriff’s Of-fice was able to acquire additional staffing to expand its supervised-release program, the inmate population has decreased.
“It gave us a bit of a relief,” he said.About 480 people who have not gone
to trial yet are part of the supervised-release program, Darr said. However, he said some or many of those people could eventually be sentenced to serve jail time by the court.
The key to reducing inmate popula-tion, Darr said, was changing how con-victs were sentenced — more people who committed low-level crimes could be put on probation.
The Adams County Criminal Justice Co-ordinating Committee was formed to find permanent solutions to curb the jail pop-ulation. As part of the temporary agree-ment, the parties in the lawsuit agreed to continue with the committee.
“We look forward to a permanent agreement on this issue which will ensure the city of Thornton and its residents re-ceive the jail services they are currently paying for,” Williams said.
Property taxes from residents in Adams County fund the jail operations, which is why many city officials oppose the cap and fee.

Dawgs all about unity Brighton High School football has a young program, but is growing in numbersBy Michelle [email protected]
The Bulldogs are ready for some foot-ball. The program and team has its eyes on strong goals this season.
“As a program we will strive to succeed and improve on a daily basis,” Coach Pat Sandoval said. “We’ll demonstrate maxi-mum effort in all we do. Our programs strives to provide commitment to all those involved in our program.
“As a team we look to be in the Top 5 in 5A in Giveaway/Takeaway ratio. Also we want to be in the Top 5 in our division with fewest penalties. Another goal the team has is to make the Top 5 for special teams and of course to make big play and to win all our home games this season.”
This is Sandoval’s sixth year as the head coach of the Brighton High School football team. Before head coach, he was an assis-tant with the team for 17 years.
Jackson Lambrecht- defensive/running back; Dalton Wadkins-linebacker/ fullback; Josh Sandoval- wide receiver/outside line-backer; Richard Trujillo- defensive back/running back; Michael Martinez- wide receiver/defensive back; Kyle Swart- line-backer/fullback; Joe Luna-offensive line-man; Moses Martinez linebacker; Brock Stricklett- offensive linebacker; Ray Baca-
running back/ defensive back are the re-turning seniors to the varsity team.
Sandoval said every team on their sea-son schedule will be tough. “It’ll be a great challenge,” he said.
The Bulldogs have a few returning start-ers. “We’ll be green on our offensive line and defensive secondary,” Sandoval said. “We’ll be a young team overall. Our pro-
gram has grown in numbers on the field, in the weight room, and the core of players keeps growing. The junior class has great numbers.
“I really like how our team has come to-gether as a unit, more family than in years past. There’s more team unity.”
Over the summer Brighton participat-ed in a camp at Colorado State University
in Fort Collins. They had five Mondays of 7-on-7, and lifted four days a week.
The Bulldogs open their season Friday against Rocky Mountain at home starting at 7 p.m. “We’ll see where we’re at as a team against Rocky Mountain,” he said. “They took it to us last year on a Saturday late morning game.”

The 2014 legislative session was productive for the Metro North region as the BGA Committee closely monitored 62 of the 621 bills introduced in the House and Senate.
Looking ahead to the 2015 session, the BGA sees much to be done that was not achieved during the last session. One Metro North Chamber priority is the reform of the current construction defect statute. Although legislation was introduced (SB 220) to help correct the current law favoring trial lawyers, the bill ran out of time before the session ended. BGA looks forward to a com-prehensive discussion and debate on this very important topic.
