Bright Star (PG), 2009 | 119 mins | UK Based on the life of John Keats and his poetry in, ‘Bright Star: Love Letters and Poems of John Keats to Fanny Brawne’ (Author: John Keats, Introduction: Jane Campion) Director/Screenplay: Jane Campion John Keats Keats was one of the most influential of the Romantic poets, and seemed to embody almost all the traits of a dedicated Romantic – striving to experience everything, suffering for his art, and dying too soon. Although his life ended at the tragically young age of 25, his writing career and words have lasted centuries. After originally studying to become a surgeon/apothecary, Keats realised poetry was his true calling and pursued writing. After the death of his brother, Tom, John moved to Hampstead and fell in love with Fanny Brawne – the love affair the film revolves around. Yet he was too poor to marry her. His poetry became marked with sadness, and he wrote the title piece of the film, Bright Star. Their romance was short lived, but a collection of his letters and poetry that inspired the screenplay was published alongside the film: Bright Star: Love Letters and Poems of John Keats to Fanny Brawne. The Adaptation Jane Campion is best known for directing The Piano, which created great critical debate. When you think of John Keats you think of his poetry – the two are intrinsically linked ‐ so it is refreshing to see an portrayal exploration of his life, particularly his relationships, and his writing. By choosing to tell the story from the viewpoint of Fanny Brawne, and singling out a few pivotal years, the life of the poet is displayed in a unique and passionate way. Poems by Keats: Ode to a Nightingale (1819) The Eve of St Agnes (1819) Ode to Autumn (1819) Jane Campion Films: In The Cut (2003) The Piano (1993) Sweetie (1989)
