Things To-Do Before
Spring Break
Turn off all lights - lighting
accounts for up to half of a build-
ing's total energy use.
Turn off computer moni-
tors.
Turn off computers if possible
(check with your IT folks).
Turn off all copying ma-
chines, typewriters, coffee
pots, and other appliances.
Unplug the equipment and appli-
ances if possible.
Turn off hand-operated ra-
diator valves in work areas.
Make sure all windows are
closed tightly.
During Spring Break and the
campus closure period from
Monday March 22
through Friday March 28
most of the campus will be
quiet. A campus-wide en-
ergy curtailment is not
possible during the week
due to the fact that the
campus committed to hosting anational forensics tournament be-
fore the closure was confirmed.
There is still opportunity to reduce
energy use we all can play a role
in saving energy on campus during
this time. Before you leave for the
break, please make sure you review
this check-list for
your office, lab, or campus resi-
dence. These may seem like small
actions but together our efforts add
up and will make a differ-
ence! During the winter curtail-
ment, the campus saved almost
$215,000 in heating and elec-
tricity costs. We hope to see
another drop in use next week
and with everyones help we
will.

TheChancellors Advisory Committee on
Sustainability(CACS), which promotes envi-
ronmental management and sustainable develop-
ment on campus, is now accepting nominations
for Sustainability Awards and applications for
Green Fund Grants. Applications and nomina-
tions are due Friday, April 2nd.
CACS Sustainability Awards-
Call for Nominations!
CACS provides annual awards to faculty, staff, and
students that have done outstanding work in
helping the campus meet its sustainability goals.
The campus community is
indebted to the hard work
of students, staff, and fac-
ulty making Berkeley a
more sustainable place to
work, live, and play. Nomi-
nations are solicited each
spring, can be made for
groups or individuals, and are open to the entire
Cal community. There is a great amount of flexi-

bility as to what groups or projects qualify, and
creativity is welcome.
Some of last years sustainability awardees in-
cluded Building Sustainability @ Cal (Group
Award) which trains students on reducing the
environmental footprint of campus buildings andDan Kammen (Faculty Award) who teaches many
sustainability courses and is actively engaged in
increasing campus sustainability.
Award winners will be announced by the Chancel-
lor at this years Sustainability Summit in April.
CACS Green Fund Grants-
Submit Applications!
If you have an idea that can help make UC Berke-
ley greener and more environmentally sustainable
and need funding, then the annual Chancellor's
Green Fund Grant program may be for you! Ena-
bling members of the UC Berkeley campus com-
munity to undertake green initiatives, the grant
program gives up to $2,000 per project to be
implemented for the 2010-2011 school year.
Funding is given on a competitive basis and many
projects are proposed based on the opportunities
identified in the 2009 Campus Sustainability
Reportand2009 Climate Action Plan.
Awardees must demonstrate the following: com-
mitment to campus greening and environmental
sustainability, potential to achieve green results,
relevant work or volunteer experience, cost ef-
fective use of funds, and measurable benefit. Grant
applications are solicited each spring and recipi-
ents are announced by the Chancellor at the an-
nual UC Berkeley
Sustainability
Summit in April.
Past grant pro-
jects have in-
cluded "Is it Just
Hot Air or Time
to Throw in the
Towel?" by
Terence Cadigan,
which is evaluat-
ing hot air versus paper towel hand drying in high-
volume public restrooms, and "Taking Out the
Recycling" by Stephen Pree, which aims to im-
prove the amount of recycling by residents of
University Village and Smyth-Fernwald through
totes that allow for easier separation of recycla-
bles from non-recyclables and increased signage at
each recycling collection location.

This years summit focuses on actions taken by
campus members to increase the sustainability of
the UC Berkeley campus. CACS welcomes all
campus members to attend and engage with each
other.
The summit consists of four portions. The first is
a poster session, which will provide an interactive
space during which staff, students, and faculty will
stand by their posters and describe the projects
they worked on. This year, CACS is opening the
poster session to the campus community. If you
would like to submit a poster of a project you
worked on over the past 12 months, please con-
tactIrene Seliverstov. The top three submitted
posters will be printed and displayed with the
rest of the CACS funded projects for the year.
Following the poster session is the Panel on Cam-pus Sustainability. This is an opportunity for cam-
pus members to ask Vice Chancellor Ed Denton,
Vice Provost Cathy Koshland, ASUC Senator
Christina Oatfield, and Graduate Assembly repre-
sentative Corinne Scown questions pertaining to
the work their organizations have done and gen-
eral sustainability questions. The panel will be
moderated by Dean Wolch of the College of
Environmental Design. You can submit questions
in advance toIrene Seliverstov. The panel will be
recorded and posted on the summit website.
During the last portion of the summit, Chancellor
Birgeneau will discuss the results from the CACS
water working group which has been meeting for
the past year. He will also announce Green Fund
Grant and Sustainability Award winners.
Finally, CACS - in association with Participant
Media and The Marketing Division - is hosting a
preview screening of the movie Oceans in
Wheeler Auditorium at 8:00pm following the
main summit program. To get your free ticket, go

Updates on Green Departments and Events
There has been a lot of certification going on at
the Office lately because departments and events,
both large and small, are going green! Weve
recently added four new departments,Capital
Projects, Architects & Engineers, Physical Plant-
Campus Services, andCenter for
Latin America Studies and eight newgreen events, three of which were
large ones.
Green Departments
Joining Capital Projects, a depart-
ment that was certified Gold with 17
points last December, Architects &
Engineers (A&E), a small 22 person
building housing Facilities Services
staff and the Office of Sustainability,
has been certified Gold with 17
points through initiatives such asconducting an appliance audit and a
transportation survey, offering reus-
able kitchenware, recycling batteries and cork,
holding a designated clean-up day, and monitoring
communal lights. Following A&Es certification,
the 450-person department ofPhysical Plant-
Campus Servicesbecame the first department
to be given the highest level certification, known
as the Green level, with 20 points! They accom-
plished their goal by eliminating bottled water and
encouraging the use of tap water, installing bike
racks, using 100% post-consumer content copy
paper, offering reusable kitchenware, and con-
ducting an appliance audit and a transportation
survey. This makes all of UC Berkeley Fa-
cilities Services Green Departments! These
four new Green Departments bring the total
number certified to 9
(representing over 3,000employees).
Green Events
With the addition of three
new small events, two me-
dium events, and three large
events, the Office now has a
running total of 25 events
green certified. Recent small
event certifications have
included the UGIS Holiday
party, LEED EBOM Work-ing Session, and RCSA
Overnight Host program.
The holiday party earned an innovation point by
having a gift exchange that used recycled gift-
wrapping paper, while the LEED Working Ses-
sion received an extra point by notifying its
guests a day ahead to remind them to bring their
own mugs. Most small and medium events cover
the basic outline of a green event, which includes
not offering water bottles, providing recycling
and composting, and notifying guests of the green
aspects of the event. The two new medium
events were a movie screening that offered vege-
tarian dishes and a faculty reception that had at
least 30% of its food ensured as organic, local, or
fair-trade. The Office also certified three large
green-themed events, which were the PLAY-
green Festival II, BERC Energy Symposiums
Innovation
Expo, and
BERC Energy
Symposium.
PLAYgreen
Festival II,certified with
9 points,
earned its
innovation
points by setting up a Reuse. Repurpose. Recy-
cle Workshop and posting an online event
guide. Held at the Haas Business School in the
Bank of America Forum, the BERC Innovation
Expo, certified with 10 points, featured food that
had at least 25% local, organic, or fair-trade and
utilized electronic invites. The following day, the
BERC Energy Sympo-
sium, certified with 11
points, attracted ap-
proximately 700 atten-
dees, limited its num-
ber of handouts that
were printed on 50%
recycled content pa-
per, and earned an
innovation point by
asking registrants
online to donate $5 to theUCB Climate Action
Fund. To date, there have been 13,000 people
who have attended green events.

The Off ice of Sustainabi l i ty PLAYing Green
ThePLAYgreen Festival II was a great suc-
cess for the Office of Sustainability. We handed
out information with water and energy conser-
vation tips and details on UC Berkeley's efforts
in making a more sustainable campus. Going
along with the "Play Green" theme, we set up a
photo booth where students, staff, and visitors
could play and creatively posed with the Office's
cricket mascot, Mark. We
raffled off a gift baskets to

NextB us Reach es AC Transi t s 52L
Use your Class PassorBear Passto minimize
your environmental impact and NextBus to
achieve maximize public transit convenience and
efficiency. UC Berkeleys Class Pass Advisory
Committeecomposed of representatives from
various student organizations, AC Transit, and
the Universitys Parking & Transportation De-partmentrecently helped fund and implement
NextBus on AC Transits 52L line.
NextBus uses satellite technology and advanced
computer modeling to track vehicles on their
routes. The 52L is now fitted with its own satel-
lite tracking systems that allows passengers to
obtain real-time arrival information. With the
52L being one of UCBs more popular lines -
serving the south campus entrance at Bancroft
and Telegraph, Berkeley BART, and Albany Vil-
lage this new system will come in handy to
many campus transit users.
NextBus is readily accessible from many different
information avenues:
Use a computer or cell phone with Inter-
net access
Set uptext message
alerts that notify you
when your bus is
near
Scheduleemail alerts
View electronic sign inside bus shelter at
San Pablo Ave. and Gilman St.
Knowing when buses arrive at a bus stop is
time saver and makes transit more convenient.
And, with NextBus already offered on other
popular campus routes like the 1 Rapid, con-
nections between buses should be more seam-
less.
This last year the Class Pass Advisory Committee
analyzed technology options to improve busservice for UC students and determined that
supporting NextBus expansion to the 52L made
good sense
Note: effective March 28th, the 52L will be re-
named the 52 and some route and schedule
changes will be made. For more information on
this change, and other AC Transit service changes

Facebook application is a
great platform for stu-
dents to track their sus-
tainable behavior. Right now, during their Cal-
only pilot phase, you can track the number of
times that you refill a re-usable water bottle
this being an incredibly sustainable action because
choosing tap or filtered water means that you donot have to buy a single-use plastic bottle.
As you report your actions, Refill Revolution
does a few things. First, they give you information
about the positive impact you are making on the
environment (as well as
on your wallet!). Sec-
ond, they show you
how you are doing com-
pared to your friends
its a competition of Green-ness. Third, they have
a raffle for great prizes. And finally, they make a
donation to a non-profit partner that invests in
clean water projects in the developing world.
That is, they take your GREEN actions here and
turn them BLUE overseas.

Berkeley Campus Dash board Makes Cal s Consumption Vis ible
Have you ever wondered how much energy and
water are being used on campus? Have you con-
templated what your portion of the consumption
is? Could
you use
data to
bettertrack your resource consumption and work to
reduce it? These are the type of questions that
have been motivating a small group of Berkeley
students to develop theBerkeley Campus
Dashboard.
TheTGIF funded project uses a web-based sys-
tem to collect, aggregate, and visualize data on
energy and water use across campus. So far, the
system visually displays monthly electricity and
water usage in campus buildings dating back to
the 1970s and, where available, has high resolu-
tion and real time data on energy (and sometimessteam and water) consumption in a handful of
wired buildings.
For many people, energy calculations are often
represented with intimidating numbers and units.
As TGIF coordinator Nicole Leung admitted
herself, I know that a kilowatt hour is a set
amount of energy, but it's still an abstract concept
for me; the Dashboard project has tried to incor-
porate that information into the design to show
exactly how much a kilowatt is to put the campus
use into context. Nicole thinks that Dashboard
is breaking down energy conservation to metricsthat everyone can understand.
The Dashboard team headed by Sam Borgeson
and Omar Khan worked to design the platform
to help students visualize the amount of energy
used on campus. The focus has been on providing
relevant data to the end-user, to initiate change
from the bottom-up.
As this team voiced, With just the electricity
data were getting from some of the more wired
buildings, we can see daytime and night time,
weekdays and weekends, spring break, hot days,
retrofits, fire drills, and finals crunch time and the
associated all nighters. But we also see energy
wasted 24 hours a day. By looking at the data,
you can observe what problems exist and tackle
how those problems can be solved. This includes
heating and cooling systems, high and low flow
toilets, and more. Moreover, this awareness has
the potential to improve buildings based on un-
derstanding the needs of the occupants.
UCB has a commitment to building commission-
ing in most of the larger campus
buildings in the next five years
through theStrategic Energy Plan.
The Dashboard team hopes that
the availability of data will help
direct the attention of educators, researchers,
staff, and student advocates. Energy reduction is
a campus effort!
The Berkeley Campus Dashboards can be
seen at:
The Free Speech Movement Caf: The
demonstration features a colorful string of LEDs
running up the side of a pillar that show the
cafs energy use in real time, broken out by
categories like lighting, coffee, and electrical out-
lets.
Wurster Hall: A set of three informational
panels and a touch screen kiosk use Campus
Dashboard data to detail the relationship be-
tween Wursters electricity and water use in real
time and explore its past consumption.
