Brief Industrial Profile of Purulia District (WEST BENGAL)

1. General Characteristics of the District:

The district of Purulia was carved out of the former Manbhum district of Bihar and was merged with the State of West Bengal in November, 1956. The district occupies 5th position in the State in respect of its size with an area of 6259 sq.km. The Western part of district of West Bengal, Purulia is surrounded on its three sides by the State of Jharkhand. On the North by Hazaribagh and Dhanbad, on the South by Singbhum and in the West by Ranchi. On the Eastern side the district of West Bengal namely Banakura, Burdwan and Midnapore covers the flank.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area.

The district lies between 22º43´ and 23º42´ North latitude and between 85º 49´ and 86º 54´ East longitude. A table showing the geographical location of Purulia district is furnished below:-

1.2 Topography

The soil of Purulia district is undulating tract of high ridges and low valleys. The major part of the district is plain. The alluvial areas are found in very narrow strips along the rivers. The valleys are steep along the rivers. Alluvial fans are found in the fringe areas of Ajodhya hills. The soils of the district are mostly sedentary in nature. Colluvial soil is found only in valley bottom. Soils of undulated uplands are shallow, gravelly, coarse having low water holding capacity. These lands are either severely eroded or very susceptible to erosion. The whole district is a network of number of rivers. The principal rivers of the district are Damodar, Kansabati, Kumari, Darakeswar and Subarnarekha. All the rivers have an easterly and South easterly courses, only the Subarnarekha flows south and receives west and south west flowing tributaries. All the tributaries of these rivers are non-perennial and subject to flash floods. The Kansabati is the master stream of the district. 1.3 Availability of Minerals.

concentrate around certain centres which are naturally more suited towards development and which have strong forward and backward linkages. Such centres where there is agglomeration of industries of industries with greater development potential and availability of minimum infrastructural facilities than other are known as growth centres. These growth centres are identified keeping an eye on the availability of economic overheads, size and growth of population, transport and communication facilities, proximity to the existing commercial centres and markets, availability of material resources etc.

After considering the above factors the following places have been identified as growth centres in the district.

11 Problems & constraints Availability of modern technology & supporting agency

5. General issues raised by industry association during the course of meeting Purulia is an industrially backward district. Mostly agricultural based cottage & tiny industries exist which uses indigenous skill-based technology. For rapid industrial expansion, modern updated technology needs to be set up in the district. The district is adversely affected by flood or draught very frequently which hampers industrial development.
