Green Task force blue/Green Infrastructure Subcommittee The Blue/Green Infrastructure Subcommittee of the Green Task Force convenes many organizations, including non-profit, for-profit, and municipal, from across the City of Detroit and Southeast Michigan who focus on water quality.

Open Space Stakeholder MeetingGroup convened by Detroit Future City to advocate for, educate around and advance the vision for achieving an integrated open space network in Detroit.

building Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (bSEED)City of Detroit building department responsible for building permits and code compliance, among other things. bSEED ensures that stormwater management strategies comply with the City of Detroit adopted Ordinances and Codes.

City of Detroit General Services Department (GSD)GSD improves City services and achieves operational efficiencies by consolidating support functions from various agencies. GSD is responsible for planning and building city parks and park improvements. GSD supports stormwater management strategies through the installation of GSI projects in city parks, often in partnership with other organizations.

City of Detroit health Department The Health Department is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of Detroiters through innovative public health policy, programs, and partnerships. Detroit health Department is part of the City of Detroit interdepartmental working group focused on stormwater management.

authority health Authority Health was created by the State of Michigan, Wayne County, and City of Detroit to support public health infrastructure and create a community health network. as part of the Open Space working group convened by Detroit future City, authority health remains aware of the health implications of stormwater management and works with faith-based organization MOSES to reach residents.

City of Detroit Planning and Development Department (PDD)PDD administers the master plan of policies and creates plans which guide residential development and economic growth in the City. PDD supports stormwater management strategies through planning efforts across Detroit neighborhoods, in terms of both neighborhood plans and specific stormwater projects.

City of Detroit Planning Commission (CPC) CPC is a nine member body appointed by the Detroit City Council. It is charged with handling all manner of development matters per the City Charter. The Planning Commission provides recommendations to the City Council on physical, social and economic development of the City including issues of stormwater management.

City of Detroit Public WorksDPW is responsible for the maintenance of roadways, waste collections, and recycling. as part of the responsibilities for maintaining roadways, DPW can contribute to the stormwater management strategies through design standards mitigating stormwater runoff.

Detroit land bank authority (Dlba)The Detroit Land Bank is a public authority dedicated to returning Detroit’s vacant, abandoned, and foreclosed property to productive use. Current programs include auction, side lot, community partnership, and demolition. DLBA contributes to stormwater management through by impervious surfaces, demolitions with specific green stormwater infrastructure outcomes, and their side lot program when converted to green space. Dlba is also a partner and landowner for DWSD pilot projects.

City of Detroit Parks and Recreation DepartmentThe Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for 308 parks and 12 recreation facilities across every neighborhood in the city. PRD has the capacity to implement design strategies for stormwater management and green stormwater infrastructure.

Green Task forceThe Mission of the Green Task Force is to promote sustainability in the region by protecting natural resources and the environment and supporting healthy communities for current and future generations. The Green Task Force is led by Councilman Benson. The Blue/Green Infrastructure Subcommittee of the Green Task Force is specifically focused on GSI awareness, policy, and implementation that is represented by a wide array of stakeholders and organizations at the table.

Great lakes CommissionThe Great Lakes Commission supports the implementation of regional water resource agreements and innovative approaches to maximizing investments in water conservation and green infrastructure. The GlC is supported by the Great Lakes Protection Fund in partnership with the Alliance for Water Efficiency (AWE), Environmental Consulting & Technology Inc. (ECT), and the Great lakes and St. lawrence Cities Initiative (GlSlCI) and has participated at the Great lakes and St. lawrence Seaway Green Infrastructure Conference held in Detroit.

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality / (MDEQ)The DEQ ensures Michigan’s water resources remain clean and abundant by establishing water quality standards, overseeing public water supplies, regulating the discharge of industrial and municipal wastewaters, monitoring water quality and the health of aquatic communities, developing policy, and fostering stewardship. Water-related program staff provide for the protection, restoration and conservation of Michigan’s Great lakes, inland lakes and streams, wetlands, and groundwater, which extends to green stormwater infrastructure efforts.

Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG)SEMCOG supports coordinated, local planning with technical, data, and intergovernmental resources. Dedicated to preserving and restoring water quality in Southeast Michigan, SEMCOG offers members a variety of stormwater management services related to low impact development techniques, Phase II permit requirements, and reviewing larger stormwater management plans.

Tetra Tech Tetra Tech is a leading provider of consulting, engineering, program management, construction management, and technical services. Tetra Tech is the lead engineering consultant to DWSD for strategies for managing GSI and greening of the city codes and ordinances.

Community foundation for Southeast Michigan (CfSEM)CFSEM is a vehicle for donors, volunteers and community to identify important issues and build financial resources to make positive long-term change. CfSEM has initiatives focusing on green development and healthy neighborhoods with partners who incorporate GSI.

Erb family foundation Erb Family Foundation nurtures environmentally healthy and culturally vibrant communities in metro Detroit, consistent with sustainable business models, and supports initiatives to restore the Great Lakes Ecosystem. as leaders of GSI within Detroit, the Erb family foundation convenes a monthly working group, supports DWSD in disseminating information, and funds GSI installations across the city through partnerships with universities, nonprofits, and communities.

ford foundationRooted in both Detroit and Dearborn and operating nationally, the Ford Foundation is committed to the vitality of the city through economic, civic, and art organizations work to advance local opportunity and prosperity. Support for GSI is in tandem with community development efforts including the Detroit RiverWalk and neighborhood investments in Northwest Detroit, specifically Grandmont Rosedale and Brightmoor.

freshwater future Freshwater Future is a watershed-wide organization dedicated solely to supporting the needs of community-based groups and actions working to protect and restore Great Lakes land and water resources. ff supports water quality initiatives including GSI as a method of ensuring the quality of the Great lakes is maintained. Detroit specific projects focus on the Detroit River and Riverfront Parks Restoration.

Michigan Sea GrantThrough research, education and outreach, Michigan Sea Grant is dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of the Great Lakes and coastal resources through a biannual grant to support research projects led by teams based at Michigan Universities. In addition to partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Ralph C Wilson, and Jr. Foundation to support GSI pilot projects within Eastern Market, Michigan Sea Grant has five projects within the 2016-2018 award cycle that include rain gardens, weather buoys, and lake ecology.

Ralph C. Wilson Jr. foundation The Wilson Foundation has a strong interest in the quality of life of the people of Southeast Michigan and Western New York. Healthy communities is one of four key funding areas. In partnership with Eastern Market and The Nature Conservancy, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. foundation is supporting GSI within Eastern Market through solutions to address water management challenges with a focus on quantifying the benefits of onsite stormwater capture.

The Kresge foundation Private, national foundation that works to expand opportunities in America’s cities through grantmaking and social investing in arts and culture, education, environment, health, human services and community development in Detroit. The Kresge foundation supports GSI projects that strengthen the community through revitalization projects, namely parks and recreation spaces.

lawrence Technological University - Great lakes Stormwater Management InstituteEffect positive environmental change in the Great Lakes Region through research, education, and practical application of Low Impact Development and stormwater management techniques. lawrence Tech’s Great lakes Stormwater Management Institute helps improve Michigan’s and the Great lakes Region’s water quality, quality of life, and blue/green economy, thereby making it easier to attract and retain water-use industries knowing that one of the Region’s most valuable resources will be protected.

Joan Nassauer, The Graham Sustainability Institute, University of Michigan Professor Nasssauer and her colleagues at the University of Michigan Water Center develop design proposals to improve ecosystem services, and use social science methods to learn how human experience affects and is affected by landscapes as part of the Grahams Sustainability Institute’s mission of engagement, empowerment, and support of faculty, staff, and students to integrate talent with external stakeholders to foster collaborative sustainability solutions at all scales. With support from the Erb family foundation and in collaboration with the Water Center, Detroit land bank authority, DWSD, and Wayne State University, Professor Nassauer and colleagues are studying the impact of GSI on Detroit neighborhoods and the perception of them through piloted stormwater, or bioretention, gardens that have transformed vacant residential lots into a large scale natural filtration catchment basin utilizing the existing foundations of demolished homes that then contribute to the beautification of the existing neighborhood.

Wayne State University healthy Urban Waters Initiative Healthy Urban Waters (HUW) is a program at Wayne State University that promotes and delivers research, education, technology development and public engagement on water resources in the urban environment. hUW maintains field research facilities that provide hands-on training, education, and research experiences with urban water resources, namely the lake huron-to-lake Erie corridor, Detroit’s belle Isle, Macomb County’s lake St. Clair Metropark, and with DWSD Water Works Park Treatment Plant.

belle Isle ConservancyThe mission of the Belle Isle Conservancy is to protect, preserve, restore and enhance the natural environment, historic structures and unique character of Belle Isle as a public park for the enjoyment of all – now and forever. Fulfilling their mission, Belle Isle Conservancy, addresses GSI at multiple scales including maintenance of stormwater systems and project based initiatives including the recent installation of the Parjana Distribution system across 24 acres and the restoration of blue heron lagoon.

Detroit audubon Supports local activities that foster the preservation of birds and the clean air, water, wetlands, grasslands, woodlands and other natural resources. Specific efforts of Detroit Audubon related to GSI include efforts to increase native plants for bird habitat and migration that also contribute positively to stormwater management.

Detroit Collaborative Design Center DCDC is a multi-disciplinary, nonprofit architecture and urban design firm at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture dedicated to creating sustainable spaces and communities through quality design and the collaborative process. The DCDC has developed extensive knowledge of GSI through projects across the City of Detroit incorporating community engagement, design, partnerships with City departments, and peers across the country.

Detroit Economic Growth CorporationThe DEGC is a non-profit organization that is a long-time partner of the City of Detroit that is leading economic development and jobs organization for the City of Detroit, by leveraging expertise and innovation to advance a sustainable, robust, and inclusive economy. As a response to the flooding of August 2014, the DEGC has increased support for GSI projects through the aid of Declared Disaster Recovery (DDR) funds in addition to existing financial mechanisms of Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) districts.

Detroit food Policy Council/Doers Consulting allianceA education, advocacy and policy organization led by Detroiters committed to creating a sustainable, local food system that promotes food security, food justice and food sovereignty in the city of Detroit. Orchestrated in concert with urban agriculture, water collection systems are used for irrigation are being utilized by urban gardens and farmers.

Detroit Future City Implementation Office DFC focuses on economic growth, land use, city systems, neighborhoods, land and building assets, and civic engagement. The office participates in projects pertaining to green stormwater infrastructure and land use citywide. GSI is a focus in the Detroit Future City Strategic Framework. The Implementation Office is prioritizing GSI in their strategic plan, convening related studies and partnership. GSI is further developed in the field Guide to Working with lots.

DGC supports green spaces that incorporate GSI in conjunction with complete street design and activation along trail systems that utilize vacant land.

Detroit Green Skills alliance & US Green building Council’s Detroit Regional Chapter Emerging Professionals Group Producing the Detroit Green Map in an effort to connect the public to local businesses and nonprofits that demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability and social equality. The Detroit Green Map features projects and businesses who demonstrate sustainability, including GSI across the city.

Detroit Riverfront ConservancyThe mission of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy is to develop access on the Detroit International Riverfront from the Ambassador Bridge to Gabriel Richard park. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy has incorporated GSI through the installation of a constructed wetland, educational signage, and programming with the DNR adventure Center.

Detroiters Working for Environmental JusticeDWEJ champions local and national collaboration to advance environmental justice and sustainable redevelopment. DWEJ has launched the Detroit Climate action Collaborative (DCaC) that focuses on climate change impacts on low-income and marginalized communities, this includes stormwater and the promotion of GSI such as rain gardens to reduce adverse residential impacts of basement backups.

friends of the Detroit River Friends of the Detroit River focuses on grassroots advocacy and programs to protect the Detroit River, including a highly visible Detroit river resource center. The primary focus of projects conducted by friends of the Detroit River entail habitat and waterway restoration which contribute positively to water quality and management of stormwater.

Keep Growing Detroit (KGD)KGD exists to promote a food sovereign city where the majority of fruits and vegetables Detroiters consume are grown by residents within the city’s limits. KGD promotes GSI techniques within urban agriculture by increasing porosity and water catchment systems in addition to partnering with friends of the Rouge and the Sierra club for installing rain gardens across the city.

MOSESMOSES organizes communities, develops faith-based leaders and builds relationships to advocate for social justice through diverse congregations. MOSES advocates on behalf of faith based institutions, including with regard to stormwater fees and has been working to disseminate information about the new drainage charge fee structure. They also support green infrastructure training programs for contractors.

The Greening of Detroit Inspiring sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, green spaces, food, education, training and job opportunities. The Greening of Detroit reduces the impact of stormwater on the sewer system by having planted over 85,000 trees in Detroit since 1989, additionally is focusing on GSI as part of their training programs for contractors, adults, and youth.

Zero Waste DetroitZero Waste Detroit is a coalition of local organizations advocating curbside recycling, a materials recovery system which will bring new jobs and economic development to the city, and an end to waste incineration. Though not focused on GSI, Zero Waste is concerned with the overall environmental sustainability of the City of Detroit.
