Part One
What is Bridging?
Bridging is “education and training of ABE students so they can become prepared for post-secondary education, and for family-sustaining employment
and career advancement.”
Adapted from Education for Work from LINCS
In Minnesota, we use the FastTRAC model

What Bridging materials have we used?
We’ve used the materials available on the Hubbs web site.
Materials for multiple levels are included.
This sample unit is from the Bridge Prep level

Take a tour of the Child Development Unit
Three documents:
Benchmarks
Materials
Culminating Activity*
*Same as Final Product
Three documents:
Benchmarks = road map, skills
Materials = what you need in-hand to run the unit
Culminating Activity* = everything you need for the grand finale
Scavenger Hunt
1. In the curriculum document, find one activity that requires the use of the internet.
2. In the materials document, find the teacher notes. What’s the recommended
adaptation for a large class?
3. In the culminating activity document, find who is responsible for matching the student
with a child for the reading session.
What did Worthington do?
Group discussion:
What do I need to consider in deciding whether Bridging is a good fit?
How would I get it started in my program/class?
Part Two
Overview of Bridging materials on the Hubbs website
The Bridging materials on the Hubbs Center web site:
http://hubbs.spps.org/bridges_project.html
Free—please use them!
We focus on two levels:
Career Pathways
Bridging Life and Work
Navigating
These materials were created in phases.
The good news: Materials and layout evolved.
The bad news: Some overlapping terminology
and formatting differences.
More good news: Formatting and terminology are
consistent within each group.
Here are some key differences you’ll see between the two
groups we’ve focused on today.
