Implementation Plan

• Implementation Workshops offered in June and Early August• Teachers who attend will work with pilot teachers on August 27-28 to plan

first units

• All other teachers will be trained on August 27-28

• Election Day In-Service will be used for PD needs

• Math Specialists and District Coordinator will be assisting teachers throughout implementation

Key Components

• Bridges in Mathematics• 60 minute daily lesson

• Problem Centered whole group, small group, and independent work

• Number Corner• 20 minute daily lesson

• Quick daily lesson to promote procedural fluency and conceptual understanding

Bridges in Mathematics Components

• Problem and Investigation• Teacher poses problem and students think independently, pair to share ideas,

and then strategies are shared as a class to analyze and evaluate

• Workplaces• Centers which provide on-going practice either individually or with partners

• Repeated throughout a few months

• Allow for differentiation

Number Corner Components

• Calendar Grid

• Calendar Collector

• Computational Fluency

• Number Line

● Increasing confidence in sharing of strategies○ Inclusive of all levels

● Program format keeps all students engaged○ Whole Group ⇒ Partner ⇒ Individual

● Time to “get down in the mud”!

Benefits -- more than just positives!

● Working collaboratively with team - sharing equally○ Slides○ Planning WIN Time better supported

○ Focus on Math Language - for all!

● Pushes US to become better math teachers!○ No longer focusing on algorithms - process-driven

● Lessons feature multiple skills● Built-in data sheets / Item Analysis● Games to reinforce foundational skills● Bumping up the RIGOR!

○ Higher level questioning○ Deeper level of understanding of how student reached answer

● Success for visual learners / more hands-on learning● Number Corner - preteaching and targeting skills monthly - key bonus!

Many skills…..one lesson!

● Elapsed Time● ...to Fractions

● ...to Adding Fractions and

Mixed Numbers● ...to Creating a Line Plot

● To Analyzing Data● Range, Median, Mode

What fraction of the entire group of students were in the pool for ¾ hour?

What fraction of the entire group of students were in the pool for exactly 1 ½ hours/

What fraction of the entire group of students were in the pool at least 2 hours?

What fraction of the entire group of students were more than 1 ½ hours?

What fraction of the entire group of students were in the pool for more than 1 hour but less than 2 hours?

Learning Management System (LMS)

Page 21: Bridges in Mathematics - Council Rock School District · 2019. 5. 24. · Bridges in Mathematics Components •Problem and Investigation •Teacher poses problem and students think

Rationale for an LMS

• One-stop shop for students – all courses in one location

• One-stop shop for parents to view course information

• Gain experience in using LMS for transition to post-secondary

Canvas LMS (Instructure)

• Committee explored several options and reached consensus on Canvas.

• Canvas currently used for virtual courses at high school.

• District can leverage Canvas for other activities such as teacher professional development, storing/sharing common formative assessments, etc.

• One-year agreement gives access to all students in grades 7-12 and all teachers in grades K-12 - $23,199.00.
